Domestication Of Bananas And Plantain

Domestication of Bananas and Plantain (Musa spp.)
Abstract
Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) are one of the major staple foods in the world. In 2006 the
estimated world production of bananas was 80.6 million tons while 16.8 tons were traded (Cohen,
2011). Although bananas are common today, the origins of the bananaare complex and occurred
over thousands of years during multiple stages. Archeologists focused on the Kuk Valley of New
Guininea, the area where the domestication of bananas supposedly took place around 8,000 BCE
(Before Common Era) (Bot, 2007). The study of banana history has been difficult because banana
pollen and seeds were rare or absent at archaeological sites. It wasn t until recent technologies and
the use of multi disciplinary research that we could gain a better understanding. Genetics and
linguistic studies also help in understanding the banana origin (Hirst, 2015). Diploid and triploid
forms of bananas have been identified and their distribution throughout the world is a key piece of
evidence in unlocking the truth about banana domestication.
Introduction
The banana (Musa spp.) is a large perennial herb with leaf sheaths that form their pseudostems,
meaning they are rather giant herbs than trees. Both the plantain and banana are sterile and
parthenocarpic so the fruit is seedless. The plant is made up of 8 12 leaves that are about 9ft tall
and 2ft wide (Chia and Huggins, 1992). Bananas are considered the

The Assassination Of John Wilkes Booth Summary
The central idea of The Life, Crime, and Capture of John Wilkes Booth revolves around the
assassination of the President. There is some foreshadowing in the part when we see Mr. Booth
entered the President s box. The lines, The servant who attended Mr. Lincoln said politely, this is
the President s box, sir, no one is permitted to enter. I am a senator, responded the person, Mr.
Lincoln has sent for me. The attendant moved to the side, and the young man passed into the box
this action makes one suspect that a wrongfully done deed is soon going to take place as there was
no mention of a senator earlier. This man was obviously lying and up to something. The author also
built up anticipation through the lines, As he appeared at the door, taking a quick, comprehensive
glance at the interior, Major Rathbone arose. Are you aware, sir, he... Show more content on

Wilkes Booth. He did not catch the spirit of the delighted audience, of the flaming lamps flinging
illumination upon the domestic foreground and the gaily set stage. He only cast one furtive
glance upon the man he was to slay, and thrusting one hand in his bosom, another in his skirt
pocket, drew forth simultaneously his deadly weapons. His right palm grasped a Derringer
pistol, his left a dirk. Then, at a stride, he passed the threshold again, levelled his arm at the
President and bent the trigger makes the plot clear and we are held in anticipation, and thinking
if a miracle will take place. However, the author portrays the assassination of the President with a
clear description through the lines, Then, at a stride, he passed the threshold again, leveled his
arm at the President and bent the trigger. A keen quick report and a puff of white smoke, a close
smell of powder and the rush of a dark, imperfectly outlined figure, and the President s head
dropped upon his shoulders: the ball was in his brain and thus ends the

Evaluating Complex Interventions
Evaluating complex interventions is a considerable challenge, especially when dealing with
programs anchored in an ecological approach to health behavior change (Deschesnes, Martin, Hill,
2003). In fact, very little is known about how best to implement a comprehensive and complex
approach to physical activity policy(Ogilvie et al., 2010; Sallis, Story, Lou, 2009). Therefore, a
process evaluation using program theory was conducted to gain a better understanding of the
factors that could influence the successful implementationof a state plan physical activity plan.
However, the implementation of the Nebraska Physical Activity and Nutrition State Plan

implementation, there is a lack in the diversity of knowledge informing the program model and
barriers and facilitators from those working in the community. The interviews emphasized the
Nebraska context but can be used to inform future developments within the physical activity policy

Sir Galahad And Sir Gawain Comparison
Arthurian stories have been around for hundreds of years, and many people still read them
today. Sir Gawain, in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by the Pearl Poet, is a righteous, noble,
and loyal knight along with Sir Galahad in Le Morte D Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory. Sir
Gawain and Sir Galahad are similar because both are very religious, but they are also different in
the fact that Sir Galahad is a considered a perfect knight and Sir Gawaindoes not quite meet that
level. Sir Gawain and Sir Galahad are similar because both are very religious. Sir Gawain is
religious because he refuses to sleep with the lady of the castle when she comes in his room and
tries to seduce him. He does not fall for her charms because it is against the Code of Chivalry....

Sir Gawain is not perfect because when Launcelot killed Sir Gawain s brothers, Sir Gaheris and
Sir Gareth, Sir Gawain got angry and wanted revenge against him. Majesty, as I am your subject
and a knight, so I swear that I shall be revenged upon Sir Launcelot. I pray you muster your
armies. In your cause and in mine we shall march against them; and even if we march through
seven realms, I shall not stay until Sir Launcelot is dead, or I am (502). Since Sir Gawain wants
to kill Sir Launcelot, this does not make him a Christian role model. On the contrary, Sir
Galahad never did anything immoral and stayed pure. He is considered a perfect knight. Sir
Galahad, flower of all knighthood, whose coming I have awaited for so long, welcome! I pray
you take me in your arms and hold me to your breast, for you alone, true servant of Christ that
you are, possess the virginity of the white lily together with the virtue of the burning rose:
qualities of the Holy Ghost, by which my flesh shall be made young again (442). King
Mordrayns said Sir Galahad is the flower of all knighthood , which portrays him to be one of the
best knights. Sir Galahad is a perfect knight and stays true to the Lord while Sir Gawain tries to be

Ernest Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants Essay
Ernest Hemingway s Hills Like White Elephants
Ernest Hemingway s short story Hills Like White Elephants relies on symbolism to carry the
theme of either choosing to live selfishly and dealing with the results, or choosing a more difficult
and selfless path and reveling in the rewards. The symbolic materials and the symbolic characters
aid the reader s understanding of the subtle theme of this story. The hillssymbolize two different
decisions that the pregnant girl in our story is faced with. Both hills are completely opposite of
each other, and each hill or decision has a consequence that is just as different as the appearance of
the hills.

She must choose one hill or another, she cannot sit on the tracks forever and mull over the pros and
cons of each decision.
The girl, the American and the woman all symbolize the decision that must be made. The girl
symbolizes youth, innocence and naivety. She is totally ignorant of the consequences of an
abortion because she is young, beautiful and in the prime of her life, and experiencing new
things all the time. Hemingway uses her to show a young, pregnant girl trying to decide if she
wants to remain carefree like the American or if she wants to be like the woman and be wise and
mature. The girl battles back and forth with an inner conflict, two different sides pulling at her
final decision; If she has her baby she will ruin her youthfulness and destroy her romantic
relationship with the American, but it very well could transform her into a woman who is wise,
mature and focused on someone other than herself. The girl is getting tired of the same routine
of drinks and a social life and she decides to do something very different. She decides to keep her
baby, to become a woman and leave her carefree and childish ways behind. However, the only
thing that is standing between the girl and the life she wants for herself and her child is the
American. The American is a selfish individualist that wants to do things his way and only lives to
please himself. The

Contemporary Theories Of Subcultures
A subculture is considered a group of dominant people or culture that has been defined in its
norms, values, and interests, which are often inconsistent to those of large groups. (Bohm Vogel,
2011) Subcultures were created when a group of people that share the same beliefs or
circumstances finds themselves cut off from society. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) These groups are distinct
from those of the majority and are held by a group into a broader society. Most subcultures are
recognized by their age of its members, or by race, ethnicity, class, gender, and their qualities that
may be aesthetic, religious, occupational, political, and sexual or a combination of these factors.
However, people create subcultures as a way to feel accepted while also signifying that they are
different from other groups. The subculture theory focuses on consistent distinctiveness, identity,
commitment, and autonomy.
The first subculture group I would like to recognize is the police they are law enforcement officers
with specific types of attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. I place them in the subculture category
because of they spend their time dealing with crime; therefore they tend to be judgmental towards
members of the public viewing them as untrustworthy and potentially hostile; therefore, the public
view the police as being unreliable and abusive as well. The police depend on their cohorts to back
them up, and mostly teamwork to apprehend criminals; therefore, it creates a dynamic of police

Summary of Theodore Roethke s Poem My Papa s Waltz
Affection in My Papa s Waltz
Theodore Roethke s My Papa s Waltz is a gentle poem, made so by its affectionate and simple
tone, its innocence, its light heartedness, and its humor. While other readers, like John Ciardi,
have found it to be a poem of terror (Fong 80), when one considers the original drafts, as John J.
McKenna does, one sees a much less forbidding melodrama and a much more down to earth
representation of home life. This paper will show how Roethke s Waltz uses language, tone, and
rhyme to convey, with childlike sensibility, a happy image of an energetic dancewith one s father.
Roethke s corrections in the original draft seem to be geared towards removing any type of
suggestive language or imagery that might rob the poem of its lightheartedness. In the original
draft, the boy is a girl and the mother s countenance / Could not unscrew itself (McKenna 35).
Apparently the sexual connotations of the latter term were to be avoided and the closeness of a
small, dizzy girl to whiskey on your breath was likely an unwanted image as well. By replacing the
girl with a boy, and changing unscrew to unfrown, Roethke removed from the poem the two main
potential obstacles: abusive, neglectful tone and sexual imagery. Carefully observing the
suggestions associated to terms in the English language, Roethke sets the reader in front of a scene
of rough housing between father and son, with mother looking on disapprovingly (but comically)
because their

Shaping Identity
Shaping Identity
Identity. What is identity? One will say that it is the distinct personality of an individual. Others
will say that identity is the behavior of a person in response to their surrounding environment. At
certain points of time, some people search for their identity in order to understand their existence in
life. In regards, identity is shaped into an individual through the social trials of life that involve
family and peers, the religious beliefs by the practice of certain faiths, and cultural awareness
through family history and traditions. These are what shape the identity of an individual. In today

Dubliners By James Joyce s Dubliners
In James Joyce s Dubliners, the reader experiences the different lives of Dublin s inhabitants. Each
Dubliner has different problems, fears, hopes, and dreams, which allows culminates into many
different perspectives. Joyce masterfully writes the daily lives of these people without any
romanticism. The Dublinersstories are a small snippet into their full lives, while the reader does
not get the full story, he does not need to. Not much may seem to happen in the stories, but
profound themes and messages are hidden beneath the words. In the story An Encounter, a
group of boys imagine they are in the Wild West, while staging mock battles of cowboys vs.
Indians. The story includes many encounters that present themselves as ordinary; however this
is far from true. In fact, the story is largely commentating on often mocking Irish religious life
and escapism. In the beginning of the story one of the boys, Leo Dillon, is scolded by Father
Butler for reading The Half Penny Marvel. Father Butler considers the comic as nonsense and
tells Leo that his Roman History is far more cultured and important (Joyce 12). A religious figure
like Father Butler is common among Joyce s works, as he has always shown contempt for
religion. In a sense, Father Butler creates structure for the boys, but it is monotonous and rigid.
Clearly Father Butler does not approve of Leo s fascinations for the Wild West so he condemns
him. The lack of support for imagination or freedom is snuffed out by a

Informative Essay On Cottontail Rabbitss
The cottontail rabbit, or Sylvilagus floridanus, is one of the most common mammals in North
America. Largely known for terrorizing gardens and melting children s hearts, this animal is

its tall ears, powerful hind legs, and of course, its trademark cotton white tail. Its fur will come in

A female cottontail, or doe, can have her first litter after only a year of age, and she can have up
to four litters a year. This means that by the time a doe is caring for her last litter of the season,
offspring from her first litter may be tending to their own babies. While cottontail litters are
relatively large, consisting of three to eight young, a sparse number will survive to adulthood.
Many are lost to predators such as dogs and cats. Others die from a flaw in nest building. The
way a mother doe builds a nest makes it very susceptible to filling with water. Entire litters are
lost when this happens, as the blind, deaf, and furless baby rabbits drown in their own refuge.
Even when cottontails do survive long enough to leave the nest, many are killed within their first
year. While this may seem like a tragedy, it is a harsh fact of life for cottontails. During the first
year, I will examine how the natural losses in young affect the mother rabbits. I will also pay close

This article popped up in my newsfeed over the weekend and reminded me of the hundreds of

From the How to Talk to Artists at Art Festivals listof what not to ask:

As for people not understanding me as a writer like people may not understand the plight of the
artist or bartender I typically assume this is the case. I assume people don t know how many
hours I spend at meetings or doing research to get one 600 word story, because why would they?
My suspicion is that these lists are like trade magazines and are read primarily by members of the
niche group (artist, adoptive parent, bartender) more than they are by the intended audience. But if
I m wrong, instead of keeping insensitive, obtuse comments at bay they create an atmosphere of
fear. Instead of saying something insensitive, which may very well have been unintentional, people
might decide not to communicate at all because they don t want to offend. The last thing I want,
especially as a journalist, is for people to be afraid to talk to me openly.
Don t get me wrong I love a good list (grocery lists, to do lists, playlists), and study after study
shows that the brain responds well to them. Umberto Eco told The Atlantic the list has an
irresistible magic and in cultural history has prevailed over and over again. Agreed.

Duality In George Orwell sShooting An Elephant, And The...
There are countless stories about politicians who are against gay marriage being caught doing
inappropriate things with people of their same sex. Unfortunately, this level of hypocrisy is all too
common in American politics. People stylize themselves as something in public but secretly might
have a different opinion in private. This duality in human expressionextends to regular normal
people as well. Human expression is split between the public and private self because of the
different comfort levels you have in private versus in public and to take a stance that is beneficial
to themselves.
Part of the reason why humans express themselves differently based on what environment they are
in is because of the comfort they feel. In George Orwell s essay Shooting an Elephant , Orwell
had to secretly support the Burmese instead of openly expressing his opinions that the British were
oppressors because he was a member of the British army while in a foreign country. He was not
comfortable with the environment he was in, so the public self he expressed became pro
imperialism and supportive of the British. This matched the socially accepted norm for British
soldiers, which was to put their own country ahead of any other considerations. If he was in a
different position, where he was not a British soldier, his public self would have matched with his
private self s opinion about the evils the British Empire were committing in Burma. His natural
instinct was to go with the expression that would make life easier for him in the army. On a
more personal scale, the level of comfort affecting your private and public self can be seen in the
behaviors one exhibits at home versus in public. At home, there is a sense of familiarity and
comfort that allows your private self to come out. I express my opinions and language freely at
home where I am most comfortable, while in public I have to carefully consider what
expressions I allow to be seen so that I stay within the socially accepted norms. Comfort is one of
the key reasons why humans express a difference between their public and private selves, as they
try to be a part of society while expressing themselves in acceptable ways.
Duality in human expression is also brought forth

Low Self Esteem
In the United States, individuals with mental illness have an unemployment rate of 60 80%
compared to the overall unemployment rate of 8 10% (Chang, 2015). However, this high
unemployment rate does not reflect an unwilling labor force, as many individuals with mental
illness state a desire for employment (Henry Lucca, 2004). Individuals with mental illnessface
stigma from multiple sources surrounding employment such as care givers, employers, and
coworkers. Mental illness care givers are often contributors to stigma surrounding mental illness,
and can cause low self esteem in those they care for. This low self esteem exacerbates the struggles
individuals with mental illness experience in the work place, and contributes to their
unemployment (Henry Lucca, 2004). Individuals with mental illness encounter discrimination
during the hiring process and in the types of jobs they are offered (Tsang, Angell Corrigan, 2007;
Henry Lucca, 2004). Finally, individuals with mental illness often suffer from unsupportive work
environments, which can contribute to longer recovery times since meaningful employment is an
important aspect of mental illness treatment (Chang, 2015; Gold, Macias Rodican, 2016). Mental
illness stigma from care givers, employers, and coworkers must be eliminated because it contributes
to unemployment. Care givers for individuals with mental illness include psychiatrists, mental

Reptile Dreams By Dave Barry
Rhetorical devices are used by writers to have an effect on its audience, they use words in
specific ways to convey meaning. In the book The Presence of Others they introduce two essays
that deal with identity, Guys vs Men and Reptile Dreams (Lunsford and Ruszkiewicz). In the
essay by Dave Barry Guys vs Men he uses several rhetorical devices to describe what he believes,
is the difference between guys and men (405). One rhetorical device Barry uses is tone. He
creates a humorous tone to get his message across to readers; his message is that people should
relax and not take things so seriously. In contrast, in Keith Bradsher s Reptile Dreams, Bradsher
creates a morose tone to express his opinion on what vehicles say about a person s identity (471).
While the two authors are telling very different stories, both use some of the same rhetorical
devices to convey their feelings. Dave Barry s Guy vs. Men and Keith Bradsher s Reptile Dreams
both use rhetorical devices of tone, anecdote, and hyperbole to influence the reader. Barry uses a

Comparison of X-Ray and Ultrasound
X rays and Ultrasound are two of the main imaging techniques used in radiography. For the
purposes of this essay, we will look at conventional x rays and diagnostic ultrasound. Conventional
x rays are non invasive diagnostic techniques that are used to capture images of the body s organs
and bones. Diagnostic ultrasounds are high frequency sound waves to create an image of soft
issues in the body such as muscles, joints, and internal organs. As examined below, while both are
used in diagnostic radiography, they have extremely different modalities.

Ultrasound relies on high frequency sounds to image the body. As stated above, ultrasound are
produced by an ultrasound transducer. To produce ultrasound, a piezoelectric crystal has an
alternating current applied across it, this causes the crystal to vibrate at a high speed and to
produce ultrasound as it converts electrical energy to mechanical energy in sound waves. This
sound wave bounces off the object being scanned. This sound triggers the piezoelectric crystal
and has its affects reversed. By measuring the time taken to send and receive the sound the
computer can produce images. Ultrasound poses no health risks while x rays give off varying
degrees of radiation. Exposure to radiation can have long term health although the rates are very
low. There are many different usages for ultrasound. The most common is for * pregnancy scans

association with God. Britain had experienced a particularly a laden period in its religious feelings
with Henry VIII having taken the nation through the reconstruction, the nation having gone from
being Catholic to getting to be plainly Protestant, disciples of the recently framed Church of
England. Some may guarantee that the King James Bible and Cranmer s Book of Common
Prayer remain as specific cases of English renaissance talk that should have been significantly
persuasive upon English Literature of the period. For quality, expository virtuoso, passionate
intricacy, profundity, and assortment, the stories of the English Renaissance is unparalleled.
Literature denoted a move from a period of confidence to a time of reason. Writing speaks to the
turbulence in the public, religion, and the government of this period. Life for the English
individuals changed as religious debate and common war shook the country. These issues
reformulated the part of people in the public eye, viewpoints of confidence, and social structures in
England. Authors of this period offer their own methods of insight as evidence of the issues and
affected the masses. Particular cases of creators of this period who exhibit English issues and...

Shakespeare ostensibly imagined an extraordinarily English adaptation of the Renaissance, for he
wove together the plots of antiquated tragedies with the histories of medieval England so
unbelievably that it was hard to unravel them. In addition, Shakespeare saturated some of his
characters with an unmistakably medieval method for thinking. By making such rationale appear to
be obsolete, Shakespeare characterized Renaissance methods of thought and their separation from
the medieval past all the more

Jim Hawkins Heroism
Noah. Moses. Joshua. Esther. What might all these people share in common? All were heroes in
the light of the biblical understanding of the term, heroism. Matthew 20:28 says, Just as the Son
of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. (NIV).
This is a verse that talks about one of the components of a true heros character. Those that I
mentioned above were humble, led others by serving, counted others and their needs more
significant than their own, and obeyed God s call for their lives. Of course, they were sinners and
still stumbled and fell, but generally they were heroic according to the Bible. Although none can
come close to the perfect heroism of the Ultimate Hero, our Lord Jesus Christ,... Show more content

But they are truly incorrect in their perception because neither Jim nor Silver qualify as heroes
when heroism as explained in the Bible is considered. Jim Hawkins and Long John Silver do not
think about others before themselves, lead by serving, and are not humble. They may indeed
have instances of good works, but that does not make them heroes. Furthermore, if good works
do not stem from the Holy Spirit s doing in your heart and are coming from your own self
righteousness, Isaiah 64:6 says, [...] all our righteous acts are like filthy rags [...] (NIV). Some
may think that Silver sparing Jim s life and Jim cutting the anchorage and sailing the Hispaniola
were heroic acts. But these acts were truly not coming from the heart of God s type of hero.
Silver did not really care about Jim s life. I says to myself, you stand by Hawkins, John, and
Hawkins ll stand by you. [...] You save your witness, and he ll save your neck! (127); Silver only
wanted Jim as a witness for him in court back in England. Silver s motivation was pure
selfishness. Likewise, Jim was prideful about how he sailed the Hispaniola to the North inlet after
cutting its anchorage. I had nothing nearer my fancy than to get home to the stockade and boast of
my achievements. (118); Jim just desired his shipmates to value him and wanted to be applauded
as the good sailors hero. Neither Silver nor

Christians On The Fringe Of Society
People that are on the fringe of society means that they are not apart of the popular group within
society and they are not always accepted for who they are. People such as the homeless, poor,
women and the LGBTQ+ community are all on the fringe of society. They are marginalised and
they always have to prove themselves to other people.
After Christians have received the Eucharist they become apart of God s family and must obey and
follow his teachings. They are meant to assist those people on the fringe of society by
encouraging other people to accept who they are. Christians can reach out to these people by

Leg Pain in a 22 Year Old Female Soccer Player
A 22 year old female soccer player has had a 3 month history of deep aching pain in the antero
lateral right leg and on some occasions, bilaterally (1). The pain occurs within 15 to 20 minutes of
her training regime or upon commencing a run. She reported symptoms of tightness in her anterior
leg, and weakness of ankle dorsi flexors (1). She described that symptoms worsened as the exercise
duration was prolonged. When activity ceased, symptoms were alleviated, though pain would
return if she re engaged in the activity. Upon attempting to continue training, she developed
numbness in the foot. On examination, mild tenderness was noted on palpation of the antero lateral
compartment (1).
This case study presents an individual who is experiencing frequent leg pain upon participation in
physical activity. Leg pain is a common condition experienced by competitive and recreational
athletes. However, the diagnosis of leg pain can be difficult as there are numerous possible
underlying contributors. A thorough comprehension of human anatomy and biomechanics is
essential for a proper understanding (2). Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome is one of the
most common conditions experienced by athletes (1,2). Of a group of 150 athletes who reported
exercise induced pain, 33 % were diagnosed with chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS)
(2). Although mostly athletes experience CECS, it is still prevalent amongst non athletes (3).

How Did Indi Build Agile Animals
Many years ago, long before humans were around, animals roamed Africa. There were tigers,
lions, bears, elephants, spiders, and so on and so on. The tigers were the kings of Africa and did
whatever they wanted wherever they wanted. Their leader was Indi and he told all the tigers
what to do and how to act. All other animals envied the big cats for their beautiful orange fur and
long envious tails. Siberias, god of life, favored them over all other creatures that she created.
They were one of the strongest and most agile creatures she had created and she loved them as
her own. The one thing she wishes was different was that they were not as self centered and
rude. Indi and his streak got away with too many things and they did not like to listen. Indi
believed that rules did not apply to tigers. One day Siberias decided to make more animals for
Africa. She had created gemsboks, antelope, cows, wildebeests, and other horse like creatures.
She even decided to create some sea creatures for her lakes. Siberias most proved new animals
were her zebras, giraffes, and pufferfish. Siberias decreed that the tigers and other big cats were

industries such as services. It should come to no surprise given the advances in technologies across
the globe, that an industry that is heavily technological based should also follow suit. This allows
for both old and new organizations to tap in the growth of both the human and technological capital

Barcelona, Spain in late 1936 to cover the fight against fascism. Being an avid fan of socialism,
he was amazed to see the small glimpse of socialism in action. He was intrigued to say the least,
of the classless society he observed there. Barcelona, Spain at this time was held under Anarchist

Later after 115 days on the frontlines, Orwell receives a leave to return to Barcelona. Upon
arriving in Barcelona he is struck by the changes that have occurred. On the streets he once again
heard titles of servile nature being spewed from one persons mouth to another, the rich and poor
clearly reappearing, and the resemblance of a class society slowly drifting back into view. Later
he describes his sadness after getting dragged into street fighting caused by infighting between the
communists and various anarchist factions, mostly caused by communistic led police trying to
seize a telephone exchange held by anarchists in Barcelona. Finally after escaping the street
fighting, he returns to the front for a short time until being shot through the throat by enemy
sniper fire, which lands him in various hospitals until he is finally declared medically unfit to
fight. After being declared unfit to fight, Orwell s real problems begin. Returning to Barcelona to

fascist militia he came across begins to haunt him. In Barcelona, his former unit the P.O.U.M has
been fully suppressed and has sadly become the political scapegoat of Communist propaganda and
all former P.O.U.M members were being rounded up and arrested. He laments at the sights of how
his former comrades were being treated, but has no time to do much for them, because he is on the

The Content Theories Of Motivation
In organizational behavior, the content theories of motivation and process theories of motivation
are important applications to analyze specific cases. The content theories of motivation generally
focus on identifying the specific factors that motivate people. First, people are motivated by their
desire to satisfy specific needs, which are arranged in a hierarchical order. In the Nordstrom case,
working at Nordstrom is appealing to many people because of the generous compensation packages.
In ERG theory, the financial incentive is important to satisfy the employees existence needs to the
extent that it provides for their living expense. Because Nordstrom promotes a family style
atmosphere within the company, the sense of belongingness and the communication among
employees provides adequate support for the relatedness needs. Lastly, the recognition of sales
achievement and potential promotion provide the employees the highest hierarchical order of
needs, the growth needs. However, under ERG theory, the notion of prepotency is not fixed. In the
case of those who leave Nordstrom, the financial rewards do not compensate for their scarification
of personal health; the communication causes unjustifiable accusation sometimes; and the ranking
of sales performance diminishes the esteem needs of most salespersons. Therefore, while the
motivational practice Nordstrom implements has led to stunning sales records, it also causes

The Vietnam War By Nyguyen Thi Vinh

can make friends have to meet on the battlefield as foes. They also ruin innocent lives, and can
uproot people from their homes. Civil wars are terrible, and make even the strongest of people

greatest crimes of civils wars is how they can make friends into enemies. The poet Nyguyen Thi

Zealand is an Anglican (24%), Presbyterian (18%), Roman Catholic (15%). English is the most
spoken language. Meeting and greeting someone is very simple and casual here, it s usually a
handshake and a smile. A smile shows that it was nice to meet them. They introduce themselves
with title and name, but it moves to first name basis fast. When invited to a Kiwi s house, it
suggests to bring a small gift to the host, but should not be too bountiful. Once giving to the host,
they are to open the gift. Table manners are important, especially the more the formal the event
it is. One table manner is that you keep your elbows off the table, and when you re eating hand
are supposed to be above the table. Another one is when eating your fork is in our left hand and
your knife is in your right hand. When done with your meal lay your knife and fork parallel and
the handles facing the to the right. At these events, they are more served family style and you wait
to be told where you sit.
In New Zealand employers can be reserved, with people they do not know, but once they develop a

for its attendees. Including school progress and educational attainment, social behavior, and
reduction of delinquency and crime that is usually found within disadvantaged families. Head Start
addresses all the guidelines within the Family Impact checklist on providing all adequate services
to low income families. As mentioned above, under Family Support and Responsibilities, Head
Start is a federally funded program, which also receives donations and grants. Therefore, the federal
government must increase funding to the Head Start programso children from low income families,

minimal funding there are not enough spots available to include every child in need of the services

This makes it hard for low income families and their children to get the adequate education they
need to strive. Head Start also experiences a lot of turnovers within staff because there is not
enough funding for the programs to pay their staff competitive wages that they need to stay
instead of leaving for higher paying jobs. Thus, funding for Head Start should be increased to
increase the number of teachers therefore making it possible to add more spots for children and
their families into the current programs and for more optimal pay for the staff. Consequently,
expanding this program and making it more accessible to low income children and families who

The Atkins Food Pyramid
Atkins diet foods are easy to find and available everywhere. There are many varieties to choose
from, whether you pick prepackaged low carb diet foods or make your own meals. No matter how
you want to do the Atkins plan, there is a solution out there for you.
You ll need to keep the Atkins foodpyramid in mind when you make food choices. The Atkins
pyramid looks much different than the USDA Food Guide Pyramid. The base of the pyramid
consists of protein sources such as eggs, fish, beef, chicken and tofu. On a daily basis, your diet
should consist primarily of these foods. The second tier has low glycemic vegetables like salad
greens, broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus and spinach.
The third tier is made up of berries and avocado. Fruits should ... Show more content on

The Induction phase is the most restrictive, but it only lasts two weeks.
You owe it to your dieting success to stay within the acceptable foods list. One of the best ways to
do this is to follow the Atkins menu plans that are printed within the New Diet Revolution book.
There are also Atkins cookbooks and cookbooks that are geared toward other low carb diets that
are helpful in formulating meal plans.
It s a helpful idea to use a cheat sheet of acceptable Atkins foods wherever you go. If you are out
and about and hungry, the last thing you want to do is to try to think back in your memory to
figure out what you can and cannot eat. Carrying a list of acceptable foods with you will make
finding a snack or meal while out on the run easy. You can t always rely on low carb labels to tell
you whether or not something is diet friendly. Ever since low carb became the new diet craze,
manufacturers have been jumping on the bandwagon to attract Atkins dieters. They label items low
carb to sell products and don t have your health in mind. Relying on foods from your own personal
list is the best way to stay on the

Power Of Words In The Book Thief By Markus Zusak
In the Book Thief by: Markus Zusak, the quote: power of words or languages to heal destroy is
very important because of the part that words played in how the characters in the book felt
when they were spoken. Some words were to dehumanize a people, to take away all hope of a
the a freedom that they once knew, and also words were used to give hope in a time that seemed
hopeless. The leaders and soldiers used their words to excite fear in the hearts of those that they
were terrorizing. Liesel used her words to give comfort in otherwise stressful environment filled
with fear and death. This is an accurate depiction of how words can heal and destroy depending on
the context in which they are used. Words are very important in this book because

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas
The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a novel by John Boyne. This novel is set during World War 2
and explores themes such as prejudice, racism, war, innocence and friendship. What sets it apart
from other novels is that it uses a third person limited point of view, and mostly depicts events as
they are seen by a young and naГЇve boy. This was one of the main narrative conventions that
engaged me in this novel.
The point of view is the most interesting and important narrative convention of this novel. It is
written in third person limited mostly from Bruno, the young boys, perspective. This means it does
not use I or we but we do get to find out what the main character is ... Show more content on

He merely parrots back things that he has heard others say as he thinks this is normal and he has
no way to know otherwise. One particularly poignant example is Heil Hitler, he said, which, he
presumed, was another way of saying, Well, goodbye for now, have a pleasant afternoon. p.54.
This made me as a reader wonder wether I would be blind to the harsh reality if I had been raised
in that way. I think that this is one of the most important things Boyne wants this novel to make us
think about.
In parts of the novel Bruno begins to actually lose his innocence and learn and understand more
about the world around him. For example, when he is talking to Maria about his father and she
starts to speak to him about her earlier life he realized for the first time that he had never fully
considered her to be a person with a life and a history of her own, p.60. This process is not fast
enough as this innocence still leads to his early death in a gas chamber. However, he thinks that
he is just going on a march while he was trying to help his friend, and this means that he is not
afraid. His innocence acts like courage, and shields him from fear while placing him in danger.
There are also symbols and comparisons made in the novel. Mostly these are during interactions
between Bruno and Shmuel, and often they are very unrealistic, and do not further the plot but
instead are there just to make a point. For

Audre Lorde Research Papers
Audre Lorde was born on February 18, 1934 in New York City to immigrant parents from the
West Indies. She learned to talk, read, and write somewhere around the age of four and wrote her
first poem in eighth grade, which was then published in Seventeen magazine. In 1962, Lorde
married a man named Edward Rollins and had two children before they divorced in 1970.
However, in 1968 she moved to Tougaloo, Mississippi and met her long term partner, Frances
Clayton. Her earliest poems were often romantic, but in the 1960s became more politically centered
due to the amount of civil unrest combined with confusion over her own sexuality. At the time
many of her poems were written, more than one fifth of the nation lived below the poverty line, and

The idea of feminist criticism began in the 1960s, right around the time Lorde wrote and published
much of her work. She used feminist theory as a way to undermine traditional patriarchal systems
and unite women in a struggle against discrimination, oppression, racism, sexism, and patriarchy.
Her writing aims to examine and promote women s interests, as well as help women of various
backgrounds identify with one another through their commonality of systemic oppression and
their desire for basic human rights. In Lorde s words, I am defined as other in every group I m
part of . This phrase is a product of our society s notion that to be different means one can not
associate oneself with any given group unless they fit wholly into that and nothing else. As
Lorde puts it, It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and
celebrate those differences. Lorde was known to have criticized some feminists during the 1960s
for focusing on the specific experiences of white middle class women rather than women as a
diverse group. Through her work, she has observed that black women s experiences are often
vastly different from those of white women, and because being a white woman is considered
normal, black women are often marginalized and cast out of the woman identity . This is similar to
the way lesbians are considered to be against feminism for not fitting the mold of the

Why Don t Boys Play With Dolls Essay
The feminist movement has been trying to change the idea of traditional sex roles and
stereotypes in society for decades, but maybe the issue relies on society instead of biological
differences. While these biological differences and research show that there are small differences
in cognitive brain activity between the sexes, they also propose a theory that this is the way it s
supposed to be (Pollitt 2549). Although these differences exist it does not mean that sexes should
have permanently assigned roles in society. Katha Pollitt, a feminist author and high profile activist
wrote the essay Why Don t Boys Play With Dolls, published in 1995 in The New York Times
Magazine. In the essay, she argues that biological determinism may reassure some adults about their
present, but it is feminism, the ideology of flexible and converging sex roles, that fits our children s
future (2549). Pollitt raises important ethical problems in her essay, genderroles and stereotyping.
Throughout her essay she provides several claims to her argument and builds credibility with her
audience by using rhetorical strategies. However, the argument also exhibits some minor flaws,
which could in return limit its persuasiveness. This analysis will identify Pollitt s three main claims
and the evidence she uses to support them. I argue that overall Pollitt provides an effective
argument by building her credibility and expanding her audience with the use of rhetorical
strategies, such as ethos, pathos,

Discrimination of Irish Catholic Immigrants During the 1920 s
During the 1920 s there were many controversial issues. There was a concern about declining moral
and ethical values, which led to restrictions such as prohibition for example. The concern about
these issues seemed most intense when they pertained to religion. In situations like these it always
seems necessary to place the blame somewhere. One particular group on which this blame was
emphasized happened to be the immigrants. Irish Catholic immigrants were a main focus of
discrimination in many ways.
The fight for immigration restriction was fueled by America s negative view of foreigners.
Protestants especially made it a point to link alcohol ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fear that surrounded this time period was a perfect way to spread the propaganda of the
Klan. It was believed that this group of immigrants held their primary allegiance to a foreign
sovereign over loyalty to the United States. This anti Catholicism was a driving force behind the
popularity of the KKK. To show the mentality of the time, there was no tax on Klan fees because
they were considered to be a benevolent society by the government. The fact that the KKK
adamantly discriminated against the Irish Catholics may seem surprising because the majority of
today s population would assume that the Klan s members encompassed any person who appeared
to be Caucasian.
This group of immigrants was also discriminated in the workplace. Employers made the wages for
this group lower than wages of other employees. The intention for this ill treatment was that the
immigrants would warn their Irish relatives of the bad conditions here in the U.S. discouraging
them from immigrating as well as to encourage the Irish Catholic immigrant employees who resided
in the U.S. to leave.
This direct discrimination against the Irish Catholic immigrants was hypocritical in the democratic
and liberal society of America. It is wrong to allow one group to infringe upon another one s rights
just because of religious

Domestication Of Bananas And Plantain Katie Twyman May 28th, 2015 PLB 143: Gepts Domestication of Bananas and Plantain (Musa spp.) Abstract Bananas and plantains (Musa spp.) are one of the major staple foods in the world. In 2006 the estimated world production of bananas was 80.6 million tons while 16.8 tons were traded (Cohen, 2011). Although bananas are common today, the origins of the bananaare complex and occurred over thousands of years during multiple stages. Archeologists focused on the Kuk Valley of New Guininea, the area where the domestication of bananas supposedly took place around 8,000 BCE (Before Common Era) (Bot, 2007). The study of banana history has been difficult because banana pollen and seeds were rare or absent at archaeological sites. It wasn t until recent technologies and the use of multi disciplinary research that we could gain a better understanding. Genetics and linguistic studies also help in understanding the banana origin (Hirst, 2015). Diploid and triploid forms of bananas have been identified and their distribution throughout the world is a key piece of evidence in unlocking the truth about banana domestication. Introduction The banana (Musa spp.) is a large perennial herb with leaf sheaths that form their pseudostems, meaning they are rather giant herbs than trees. Both the plantain and banana are sterile and parthenocarpic so the fruit is seedless. The plant is made up of 8 12 leaves that are about 9ft tall and 2ft wide (Chia and Huggins, 1992). (Bohm Vogel, 2011) Subcultures were created when a group of people that share the same beliefs or circumstances finds themselves cut off from society. (Bohm Vogel, 2011) These groups are distinct from those of the majority and are held by a group into a broader society. Most subcultures are recognized by their age of its members, or by race, ethnicity, class, gender, and their qualities that may be aesthetic, religious, occupational, political, and sexual or a combination of these factors. However, people create subcultures as a way to feel accepted while also signifying that they are different from other groups. Summary of Theodore Roethke s Poem My Papa s Waltz Affection in My Papa s Waltz Theodore Roethke s My Papa s Waltz is a gentle poem, made so by its affectionate and simple tone, its innocence, its light heartedness, and its humor. While other readers, like John Ciardi, have found it to be a poem of terror (Fong 80), when one considers the original drafts, as John J. McKenna does, one sees a much less forbidding melodrama and a much more down to earth representation of home life. This paper will show how Roethke s Waltz uses language, tone, and rhyme to convey, with childlike sensibility, a happy image of an energetic dancewith one s father. Roethke s corrections in the original draft seem to be geared towards removing any type of suggestive language or imagery that might rob the poem of its lightheartedness. In the original draft, the boy is a girl and the mother s countenance / Could not unscrew itself (McKenna 35). Apparently the sexual connotations of the latter term were to be avoided and the closeness of a small, dizzy girl to whiskey on your breath was likely an unwanted image as well. By replacing the girl with a boy, and changing unscrew to unfrown, Roethke removed from the poem the two main potential obstacles: abusive, neglectful tone and sexual imagery. Carefully observing the suggestions associated to terms in the English language, Roethke sets the reader in front of a scene of rough housing between father and son, with mother looking on disapprovingly (but comically) because their ... • 15. Duality In George Orwell sShooting An Elephant, And The... There are countless stories about politicians who are against gay marriage being caught doing inappropriate things with people of their same sex. Unfortunately, this level of hypocrisy is all too common in American politics. People stylize themselves as something in public but secretly might have a different opinion in private. This duality in human expressionextends to regular normal people as well. Human expression is split between the public and private self because of the different comfort levels you have in private versus in public and to take a stance that is beneficial to themselves. Part of the reason why humans express themselves differently based on what environment they are in is because of the comfort they feel. In George Orwell s essay Shooting an Elephant , Orwell had to secretly support the Burmese instead of openly expressing his opinions that the British were oppressors because he was a member of the British army while in a foreign country. He was not comfortable with the environment he was in, so the public self he expressed became pro imperialism and supportive of the British. This matched the socially accepted norm for British soldiers, which was to put their own country ahead of any other considerations. If he was in a different position, where he was not a British soldier, his public self would have matched with his private self s opinion about the evils the British Empire were committing in Burma. His natural instinct was to go with the expression that would make life easier for him in the army. On a more personal scale, the level of comfort affecting your private and public self can be seen in the behaviors one exhibits at home versus in public. At home, there is a sense of familiarity and comfort that allows your private self to come out. I express my opinions and language freely at home where I am most comfortable, while in public I have to carefully consider what expressions I allow to be seen so that I stay within the socially accepted norms. Comfort is one of the key reasons why humans express a difference between their public and private selves, as they try to be a part of society while expressing themselves in acceptable ways. Furthermore, if good works do not stem from the Holy Spirit s doing in your heart and are coming from your own self righteousness, Isaiah 64:6 says, [...] all our righteous acts are like filthy rags [...] (NIV). Some may think that Silver sparing Jim s life and Jim cutting the anchorage and sailing the Hispaniola were heroic acts. But these acts were truly not coming from the heart of God s type of hero. Silver did not really care about Jim s life. I says to myself, you stand by Hawkins, John, and Hawkins ll stand by you. [...] You save your witness, and he ll save your neck! (127); Silver only wanted Jim as a witness for him in court back in England. Silver s motivation was pure selfishness. Likewise, Jim was prideful about how he sailed the Hispaniola to the North inlet after cutting its anchorage. I had nothing nearer my fancy than to get home to the stockade and boast of my achievements. (118); Jim just desired his shipmates to value him and wanted to be applauded as the good sailors hero. • 44. Power Of Words In The Book Thief By Markus Zusak In the Book Thief by: Markus Zusak, the quote: power of words or languages to heal destroy is very important because of the part that words played in how the characters in the book felt when they were spoken. Some words were to dehumanize a people, to take away all hope of a the a freedom that they once knew, and also words were used to give hope in a time that seemed hopeless. The leaders and soldiers used their words to excite fear in the hearts of those that they were terrorizing. Liesel used her words to give comfort in otherwise stressful environment filled with fear and death. This is an accurate depiction of how words can heal and destroy depending on the context in which they are used. Words are very important in this book because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Narrative Techniques in the Boy in the Striped Pyjamas... Narrative Techniques in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is a novel by John Boyne. This novel is set during World War 2 and explores themes such as prejudice, racism, war, innocence and friendship. What sets it apart from other novels is that it uses a third person limited point of view, and mostly depicts events as they are seen by a young and naГЇve boy. This was one of the main narrative conventions that engaged me in this novel. The point of view is the most interesting and important narrative convention of this novel. It is written in third person limited mostly from Bruno, the young boys, perspective. This means it does not use I or we but we do get to find out what the main character is ... One particularly poignant example is Heil Hitler, he said, which, he presumed, was another way of saying, Well, goodbye for now, have a pleasant afternoon. p.54. This made me as a reader wonder wether I would be blind to the harsh reality if I had been raised in that way. I think that this is one of the most important things Boyne wants this novel to make us think about. In parts of the novel Bruno begins to actually lose his innocence and learn and understand more about the world around him. For example, when he is talking to Maria about his father and she starts to speak to him about her earlier life he realized for the first time that he had never fully considered her to be a person with a life and a history of her own, p.60. This process is not fast enough as this innocence still leads to his early death in a gas chamber. However, he thinks that he is just going on a march while he was trying to help his friend, and this means that he is not afraid. His innocence acts like courage, and shields him from fear while placing him in danger. There are also symbols and comparisons made in the novel. Mostly these are during interactions between Bruno and Shmuel, and often they are very unrealistic, and do not further the plot but instead are there just to make a point. For ... • 46. Audre Lorde Research Papers Audre Lorde was born on February 18, 1934 in New York City to immigrant parents from the West Indies. She learned to talk, read, and write somewhere around the age of four and wrote her first poem in eighth grade, which was then published in Seventeen magazine. In 1962, Lorde married a man named Edward Rollins and had two children before they divorced in 1970. However, in 1968 she moved to Tougaloo, Mississippi and met her long term partner, Frances Clayton. Her earliest poems were often romantic, but in the 1960s became more politically centered due to the amount of civil unrest combined with confusion over her own sexuality. At the time many of her poems were written, more than one fifth of the nation lived below the poverty line, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The idea of feminist criticism began in the 1960s, right around the time Lorde wrote and published much of her work. She used feminist theory as a way to undermine traditional patriarchal systems and unite women in a struggle against discrimination, oppression, racism, sexism, and patriarchy. Her writing aims to examine and promote women s interests, as well as help women of various backgrounds identify with one another through their commonality of systemic oppression and their desire for basic human rights. In Lorde s words, I am defined as other in every group I m part of . This phrase is a product of our society s notion that to be different means one can not associate oneself with any given group unless they fit wholly into that and nothing else. As Lorde puts it, It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences. Lorde was known to have criticized some feminists during the 1960s for focusing on the specific experiences of white middle class women rather than women as a diverse group. Through her work, she has observed that black women s experiences are often vastly different from those of white women, and because being a white woman is considered normal, black women are often marginalized and cast out of the woman identity . This is similar to the way lesbians are considered to be against feminism for not fitting the mold of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 47. Why Don t Boys Play With Dolls Essay The feminist movement has been trying to change the idea of traditional sex roles and stereotypes in society for decades, but maybe the issue relies on society instead of biological differences. While these biological differences and research show that there are small differences in cognitive brain activity between the sexes, they also propose a theory that this is the way it s supposed to be (Pollitt 2549). Although these differences exist it does not mean that sexes should have permanently assigned roles in society. Katha Pollitt, a feminist author and high profile activist wrote the essay Why Don t Boys Play With Dolls, published in 1995 in The New York Times Magazine. In the essay, she argues that biological determinism may reassure some adults about their present, but it is feminism, the ideology of flexible and converging sex roles, that fits our children s future (2549). Pollitt raises important ethical problems in her essay, genderroles and stereotyping. Throughout her essay she provides several claims to her argument and builds credibility with her audience by using rhetorical strategies. However, the argument also exhibits some minor flaws, which could in return limit its persuasiveness. This analysis will identify Pollitt s three main claims and the evidence she uses to support them. I argue that overall Pollitt provides an effective argument by building her credibility and expanding her audience with the use of rhetorical strategies, such as ethos, pathos, ... • 48. Discrimination of Irish Catholic Immigrants During the... Discrimination of Irish Catholic Immigrants During the 1920 s During the 1920 s there were many controversial issues. There was a concern about declining moral and ethical values, which led to restrictions such as prohibition for example. The concern about these issues seemed most intense when they pertained to religion. In situations like these it always seems necessary to place the blame somewhere. One particular group on which this blame was emphasized happened to be the immigrants. Irish Catholic immigrants were a main focus of discrimination in many ways. The fight for immigration restriction was fueled by America s negative view of foreigners. Protestants especially made it a point to link alcohol ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The fear that surrounded this time period was a perfect way to spread the propaganda of the Klan. It was believed that this group of immigrants held their primary allegiance to a foreign sovereign over loyalty to the United States. This anti Catholicism was a driving force behind the popularity of the KKK. To show the mentality of the time, there was no tax on Klan fees because they were considered to be a benevolent society by the government. The fact that the KKK adamantly discriminated against the Irish Catholics may seem surprising because the majority of today s population would assume that the Klan s members encompassed any person who appeared to be Caucasian. This group of immigrants was also discriminated in the workplace. Employers made the wages for this group lower than wages of other employees. The intention for this ill treatment was that the immigrants would warn their Irish relatives of the bad conditions here in the U.S. discouraging them from immigrating as well as to encourage the Irish Catholic immigrant employees who resided in the U.S. to leave. This direct discrimination against the Irish Catholic immigrants was hypocritical in the democratic and liberal society of America. It is wrong to allow one group to infringe upon another one s rights just because of religious ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
