Graham Greene wrote The Destructors which is about a group of boys who destroys Mr. Thomas s
house. The story takes place after WWII and explains that Germany demolished London. There are
two things that the story connects to the history of London; one is when Germany attacks London. The
attack was known as The Blitz and shows how much damage Germany has caused London. Another
connection is the movement of the Teddy Boys. The story took place after nine years when the war
ended, and the Teddy Boys movement began around the 1950s. They were known as rebels and had a
reputation for violence. Thus the society blamed the Teddy Boys for many of society s ill in the 1950s.
The history of the Blitz shows how the boys are affected and this is connected to them because they
tend to be rebels and what their response to the world around them. Graham Greene s The Destructors
explained that young people have no hope and promises and challenges the traditional expectations of
them, by showing them to be incapable of finding something practical in the world around them and
within themselves.
The Blitz began in England in September 1940; Germans required avoiding a long war. The Blitz, also
known as the Blitzkrieg is a German word for lightning. The British press applied this word because
of the frequent bomb raids that were carried out over Britain in 1940 1941. The intense bombing on

Compare and contrast the characters of Mr. Birling and Sheila Birling in their attitudes to social

Almost the first thing Mr. Birling says to the Inspector is said to make an impression. He says, I was
an alderman for years and Lord Mayor two years ago and I m still on the Bench so I know the
Brumley police officers pretty well... His tone of voice is boastful as if emphasising to the Inspector
how important he is. His first intention is to make a good impression, rather than finding out why the
Inspector has called. When he does ask why the Inspector has called, he becomes slightly impatient
when the Inspector doesn t fully answer his question. He clearly feels he is more important than the
Inspector. He then says, Look there s nothing mysterious or scandalous about this business at least not
so far as I m concerned. This sentence doesn t flow which emphasises Mr. Birling s impatience. It also
highlights Mr. Birling s selfishness and attitude towards other because he is only thinking of himself.
He is immediately dismissing responsibility and his irritation is only to cover up his worry and
embarrassment. Sheila s reaction to the Inspector is almost opposite to that of her father s reaction.
Sheila is not worried about making an impression and almost immediately asks, What s this all about?
When she hears about Eva Smith s fate, she reacts to it unlike her father who said, Yes, yes. Horrid

In early 2014 a group of scientists at West Virginia University, 2 students and two professors tested
three cars for their emissions. For Passat and Jetta two Volkswagen cars, their found that in real
driving conditions the US emissions limits was exceeded by factor of 15 to 25 and by factor 5 to 20
for Jetta and Passat respectively.(1) This confirmed the discrepancies already found by International
Council on Clean Transportation (ICCDT) in Europe. On 18 September 2015 the United States
Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) seed a Notice o Violation (NOV) alleging that
Volkswagen Group had an emissions compliance defeat device installed.(2) In this case this defeat
device was an installed firmware with an algorithm intentionally forged with an intention to detect and
falsify emission tests. Since then couple of heads has rolled, but as my best knowledge it is still not
known which individual software engineers are personally responsible for doing this. But from
software engineer point of view it might be interesting to answer the question what can we learn from
this affair? What IT professional issues it raised?
It was always Volkswagen ambition to conquer US car market. One of the difficulties they faced was
common in USA loyalty to domestic car vendors. Another problem is different market structure.
Diesel cars share much less part of the market than it is in Europe. And much more restrictive
emission limits required by the USA law
