Exploring the Importance of Traditions in Richard...
Any relationship goes two ways to keep our life in balance, and also affect our life whichever of
family or culture. As Bernice Weissbourd says: Because it s not only a child is inseparable from the
family in which he lives, but that the lives of families are determined by the community in which they
live and the cultural tradition from which they come. In Keeper n me, for instance, Garnet Raven who
was taken away from his family to a series of white foster homes when he was three. Garnet s
experiences as a result of the oppressive political and social policies. Moreover, Keeper as a storyteller
tries to pass the message of traditions and a way of life to guide Garnet, who arrived in White Dog
reservation with anything but Native, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This quote also foreshadows that he will find a place to belong as far as staying on the reservation to
keep in touch with his family and Native culture. During a positive lesson of Native culture, he starts
to fit in the society and gets acceptance of people. His mom gives him the shirt that he had on the day
he arrived at reserve to remind him of where he came from and how he wanted to be. Although his
mom revamps the shirt that the sleeves were cut back regular, the long pointed collar was gone and the
ribbons ran across the chest and back and down the arms (Wagamese 301). He learns the traditional
ways of Native and makes the connection with people, especially his family, and now he changes the
way that he used to dressing. Everyone needs family in order to find themselves, no one could be his
own person without knowing himself. The surroundings compel Garnet to learn Whites instead of his
own culture cause he lost connection and himself. Setting is one aspect of the culture that affect
Garnet s identity in social way. The setting of the book is very important in Garnet s character
development and personal growth. The relationship between Garnet and his family is detached
because he was raised by foster homes instead of his family, that makes him a lot differences between
him and Natives. When he returns to the reserve, he has lots of things need to learn, especially the
traditional Native spiritual ways. At the

The House Of Mirth And Gender Roles
The House of Mirth was written by Edith Wharton, a successful Pulitzer prize winning author.
Wharton grew up enjoying the comforts of the privileged upper class during the late eighteen
hundreds and early nineteen hundreds. This unique background is what enables her to write the raw
truth behind the social atmosphere among the upper class. This is evident through The House of Mirth
because the novel illustrates the life of Lily Bart as she navigates through the elite social jungle.
Wharton s personal experience with the privileged upper class society allows her to eloquently depict
the luxuries Lily Bart enjoys, such as extravagant vacations, elaborate events, lavish gowns, deluxe
meals, and fine wine. However, Wharton also meticulously describes ... Show more content on

During this time period, woman were suppose to be seen as ornamental figures that did not necessarily
do much but establish a dominance for their family name in social circles. Thus, men usually looked
for a trophy wife that would highlight their success in the most positive manner, and that was in fact
what Mr. Rosedale was looking for when he initially asked Lily Bart to marry him. Wharton makes
Mr. Rosedale s marriage proposal to Lily Bart look more like a business proposition which illustrates
how love and emotions were not as important as social standing and social power to most of the elite
group of wealthy people. Thus, Wharton further establishes the superficial behaviour of the upper
class. However, Lily Bart was never one of them, even if she was around them, because her morals
and ethics kept her from accepting his proposition. When Lily did spiral towards poverty and social
rejection, she was desperate for any security, and she eventually came to accept Rosedale s marriage
proposition. However, Rosedale understood that Lily Bart was a social outcast because Judy Trenor
and Bertha Dorset had deemed her as such, and that caused him to decline Lily. Thus, when the two
most sought after women in the social circle deem you socially unacceptable most everyone else does
to. Even though, Mr. Rosedale had an ardent attraction for Lily Bart it was not enough to marry her
because his business attitude assured him that Lily Bart would now not benefit him socially because of
her social disgrace. He was right in believing money would not solve Lily Bart s issues because to
become socially established they needed to be accepted by the social group led by Judy and Bertha.
Thus, Mr. Rosedale understood that Lily had failed at her function of being the ideal trophy wife

The History of the Amish Essay
The History of the Amish
The Amish, who are also called The Plain People or Old Order Amish, originated in Switzerland in
approximately 1525. They originated from a movement called the Anabaptist movement. Jacom
Amman was the leader. This happened during the reformation in the16th Century Europe. They
believed in holding on to traditions and keeping themselves separated from the world. He was stricter
about this than other Anabaptists of that time. The Anabaptists were against the union of church and
state and also against infant baptism. They felt that each individual should make this choice for
himself when he or she is old enough. They felt the age for baptism was about 18 years. This
disagreed with the laws of the time. It was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, on occasion they will use tractors with steel wheels to pull large equipment on the highway.
And, it is rare to see tractors being used in the fields, except in climates that are too hot for horses.
Very few of the Old Order use indoor plumbing and running water.
The New Order maintains many of the Old Order practices. However, they are considered the most
progressive of the Amish groups. Some of these New Order Groups use telephones, regular air filled
tires for their tractors, and even electricity in their homes.
Some extreme cases are the conservative Swartzentrubers, and the Nebraska Amish of Central
Pennsylvania who do not use indoor plumbing, or motorized machinery of any kind. They also wear
even more conservative clothing. The Nebraska Amish, for example, do not wear suspenders or
bonnets, and will not even allow screens on their doors and windows. Over 90% of the current Amish
population, are from the original emigrant ancestors. There are less than 10% converts included in the
total membership.
Today there are between 100,000 and 150,000 Amish in North America. The largest group resides in
Holmes County, Ohio. Other areas of concentration for the Amish are in Pennsylvania, northern
Indiana and Iowa. Fewer still are to be found in the eastern and mid western states and Ontario,
Canada. All together, the Amish are said to have communities in 24 states. When most people think of

My Identity Essay
My Identity What is my identity? I think my identity at the moment is Mexican, 15 years old, a
student, and more. I am still trying to figure out more things of my identity at the moment. For right
now these are some of my identity and things that mean a lot to me. As I said before I am mexican.
Most of my family was born and raised in Sinaloa, Mexico. They were born in a ranch called La
Quebrada de Los Sandovales . Last year I got to go there for the first time. It looks really old but the
river is so beautiful. I loved how the people there knew each other. Since I was born my mom made
me believe in the virgen de guadalupe. She is the mother of Jesus Christ. Mostly every year On
December 12 my family and me go to church to celebrate her. They bring music to sing to her. It is
always beautiful. On this day we also celebrate my birthday. I am so grateful to be born on this day. As
I was saying in the second paragraph, since my parents are mexican they taught me spanish. Being
bilingual for me is so important because I get to help others. At school there are times are a lot of
times I make new friends just by translating things for them. I am glad I am latina because I know that
it will help me in the future some way. There are some things I like doing with others which are
movies and sports. I have always liked watching movies. I don t really mind what kind of movie it is. I
like fantasy movies the best or non fiction because it is mostly of the time it is filled with

Master Harold and the boys
Master Harold and the boys Inclusion in the Curriculum Essay
In his masterpiece Master Harold and the boys, Athol Fugard has journeyed deep into sensitive issues
including racism and growing up, without sacrificing the high technical standard that often
distinguishes great theatre. The poignant and enlightening journey that is Fugard s piece undoubtedly
deserves inclusion in any English curriculum, with the work s characterization, themes, conflicts and
motifs all earning this distinction.
With only three characters sharing dialogue and one of these playing a minor role, detailed
characterization is a highlight of Master
Harold and the boys. The major protagonist, Hally, is a white seventeen year old intended to be an ...

Thematically, Master Harold and the boys covers two sensitive and important issues, which are key to
any education program. The first theme, which must be examined, is that of white superiority and
racial segregation, instigated by the Apartheid system. Fugard, through the course of the play, makes it
clear in subtle references that the white race is considered to be superior to the black in South African
society. One such subtle reference is made when Hally says: Don t try to be clever, Sam. It doesn t suit
you. (35). As the climax develops,
Fugard begins to display this in more blatant dialogue, with lines such as He s a white man and that s
good enough for you (53), reflecting the prejudice and segregation that plagued society at that time. A
further example of Fugard s references to this issue of white supremacy is depicted when Sam
attempts to convey to Hally the simple beauty of ballroom dancing, yet Hally dismisses it as mentally
retarded (39) and the culture of a primitive black society (43). It is not until he puts aside this fa ade
provided by white ideology that he can grasp the true worth of Sam s comments.
The second major theme in the work is that of growing up, and doing this with the traps of society.
Hally is a boy at the crossroads of childhood and manhood, and the opinions and ideals he learns at
this point will likely shape the rest of his life. The society of white
supremacy

Euphemism And Racist Language Examples
Introduction
As much as language helps to communicate, but as the same time this same language gives room for
misunderstanding and miscommunicating. The common and major barriers are these six: Cliché,
Jargon, Slang, Sexist and Racist Language, Euphemisms and Doublespeak.
Cliché, Jargon and Slang
Cliché is an overused word or phrase that has lost its originality and interest overtime. It loses its
impact on the receiver because they avoid the use of the common meaning and at the same time it
doesn t focus on the precise usage of the word or phrase.
Example: At the end of the day said during a business meeting setting might cause misunderstanding
base on the fact that the receiver might interpret that as the literal meaning of the end of that day or ...

Example: the most common Jargon we all refer to when thinking about a normal standard working job
is the famous 9 to 5 ; which stands for the standard work day.
Slang is a different way than the usual to say or express words. It´s close to jargon; it may be a freshly
invented word or a traditional one with various intent or effect.
Example: A common slang I heard about in an American TV series was how workers referred to CEO,
COO, CFO... and so on as the c level workers to refer to the high senior workers in the management.
Sexist and Racist Language, Euphemisms, Doublespeak
Sexist and racist language is a group of slangs joined together to belittle or insult people of different
groups, origin and culture. Today these languages are violation of policies and discriminatory laws.
Example: these types of slangs referred as being sexist or racist, unfortunately are present in our
everyday lives and all over the world. A common example is referred to people who travel from place
to place or simply are nomad as

Muslim Women s Rights Today
There are approximately one billion people worldwide that follow the Islamic way of life. Islam is the
religion of Allah, and Muhammad his last prophet. They refer to themselves as Muslims. There are
many rules for the daily life of Islam. These rules are found in the Qur an, which is their guidebook.
Muslims cannot do anything that may be considered harmful to their body, mind, or soul, which is
also known as haram. For example, eating pork is not allowed, nor is lying, stealing, or cheating.
Muslims are encouraged to do what is beneficial, this is known as halal. Popular culture portrays
Muslim women as not having many rights and privileges. Islam does however give women rights
which include the right to be educated, work outside of the home and to inherit wealth. Family is
considered very important in Islam and obligations to other family members are strongly stressed. It is
very common for extended family members to all live together in the same house. Muslim women are
allowed to participate in public life as long as their modesty is not affected. They are expected to wear
Hijab, or covering, so that their sexuality will not be a source of temptation for men. Their rights, as in
all cultures and communities over time, are often violated. As the Muslim empire grew, the role of
women changed as well. Muslim men and women were originally seen as equal. The prophet s
teachings proclaimed the equality of men and women before God and in Islamic worship.

How I Learned With Depression
Our designated driver is on the floor. With a mouthful of sharp beach sand in his mouth he stays down
and screams Darn! Disoriented and dehydrated I look to the top and I see my partners in crime yelling
at the top of their lungs from the roof of sun beaten lifeguard tower, Throw some beer in his mouth!
With smile football stadiums wide I look down at my bare skin. Covered only by boxers, soaked by
the oceans bitter cold waters, there I was; tears running down my cheeks freezing like a nude fool. I
had found what I was always looking for, and it turned out what I was looking for I had the entire
time. Growing up with depression can be hard. It can be especially hard when you don t know you
have it. I was informed of my depression after a series of test and numerous trips to the doctors. I didn
t enjoy many of things other people did when I was younger due to my depression, but as I got older,
dealing with my depression came to be harder and harder. I showed no interest in anything or anyone.
Things I ones use to love to do no longer called my name. My guitar gathered dust, my skateboards
corroded with the seasons, my hopes to ever feel normal again gone. Constantly getting different
medications was the worst part. I never knew if that day I would be happy, sad, mad, or my all time
favorite, suicidal. Eventually I learned how to deal with my depression, given the right cocktail of pills
that is. As the years went by, it got easier to talk about my condition to

The Role Of Spna As A Cell Wall
Figure 1: Kaplan Meier survival curves of wax worms infected with labelled dose (CFUs) of GAS
SpnA variants over 3 days **** P 0.05 (One way ANOVA) A methyl green assay allows quantification
of DNAse activity by measuring the change in absorbance as the methyl green DNA complex is
degraded (Sinicropi et al. 1994). The SpnA knockout had significantly lower DNAse function than
wildtype GAS whilst the non functional complements showed similar activity to the knockouts and
the functional complements showed an intermediate function in between that of the knockout and that
of the wildtype (Fig. 5) All strains showed higher activity than buffer alone (Fig. 5). Discussion
Previous experiments have characterised the role of SpnA as a cell wall anchored DNAse important
for immune evasion through the destruction of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) (Buchanan et al.
2006). While small scale in vivo experiments in mice have been conducted (Hasegawa et al. 2010), a
Galleria mellonella infection model allows for a larger scale screening of mutants to further refine the
role of SpnA in GAS virulence. This is due to the lower cost, easy maintenance, small size and
suitability of the wax worm (Ramarao et al. 2012). In the above experiments, the role of SpnA in GAS
virulence was clearly demonstrated by the significant difference in killing and the health index of the
caterpillars between wild type and ΔSpnA. They also revealed that complementation with cell wall
bound SpnA on a plasmid

Basketball Scar
Every scar makes me who I am
Someone once said, Scars are stories in our skin . Often we look at them as a blemish or a bad
memory. We suffer for a long time by trying to find our happiness for healing ourselves. Are scares
not the symbol of experience? Are they not the things that make us who we are? In my life I have
learned that we need to remember the scars, whether emotional or physical. Sometimes they can be
positive and keep the memories of self esteem and honor. I was injured many times, but one that I will
never forget was getting a scar in a basketball game. I was 12 when I began to play basketball at the
school. Only 3 years passed when I was chosen as the best player, and now I am here with other girls
who were much older than I.
There was the great game, overflowed by different emotions I was sitting on the bench. It was my first
game on the new team. I could just sit on the bench and wait when the coach let me go to the court.

moment when I could hardly understand what happened. The tall strong girl ran at me. I tried to avoid
getting hit, but I did not have time. She knocked me down, and I fell heavily to the floor. As I realized
then I injured my knee. However, I still kept the ball. The big tall girl, who looked more like a boy,
tried to take the ball away from me. I don t know where I got this power but I could resist her. When

Today, society has entered into some truly interesting yet important times. None more so that with

mainstream attention, in regards to the mass consumption of meat, and the ethical dilemmas faced
with the current model of harvesting of meat, in particular the harvesting of beef cattle. Concurrently
major scholars and research institutions, are developing studies and examining the current state of
health to humans whereby they are comparing those who regularly consume meat, to those who
abstain from animal products to varying degrees. While studies are in the infancy stages, enough
progress has been shown to offer some basis of debate. Considering the health of the consumer of

Nardelli s Leadership Style
Business Ethics
Being in a leadership position doesn t always make you a leader. It s what you do, and how you act
while you re in that position that makes you into a strong leader. Making a distinction between the
terms leadership and management has been an ongoing focus of organizational behavior authors. John
Kotter (1990) argues that management focuses on coping with complexity through the use of the basic
managerial functions of planning, organizing, and control. Robert House and R. J. Aditya (1997) link
the concept of management with the use of formal authority that arises from a person s organizational
rank. In contrast, leadership concentrates on coping with change and providing guidance. Leaders

Nardelli was a strong headed and stubborn individual. He was very money driven, and refused to give
up any of his salary for the benefit of the company. I believe that was his downfall, and the reason in
which led to his resign. In the end it came down to the headstrong CEO s refusal to accept even a
symbolic reduction in his stock package. Home Depot Inc. s (HD) board of directors wanted their
controversial chief executive, Robert L. Nardelli; to amend his whopping compensation deals for
recent years. After he pulled down $38.1 million from his last yearly contract, angry investors were
promising an ugly fight at the company s annual meeting in May. Nardelli agreed that he would
continue to receive a guaranteed $3 million bonus each year, but not more. When board members
asked him to more closely tie his future stock awards to shareholder gains, he refused, according to
people familiar with the matter (Grow, B., Foust, D., Thornton, E., Farzad, R., McGregor, J., Zegal, S.,
2007). According to trait theories, there are particular traits in which a leader posses. These are traits

Research Paper On Invasive Species
We get many things natural world such as food, water, animals, and plenty of oxygen. We owe this to
a good ecosystem, and a good ecosystem requires a stable group of specimens with competitive traits
that help balance out the populations, and clean atmosphere. One threat to ecosystems are specimens
from another ecosystem that invade another ecosystem threatening them to extinction; also known as
invasive species. Invasive species have been kind of mixed bag usually, but to me, it takes some
restrictions to help protect the environment from invasive species. The problem with when you
introduce alien species to another land is that they can decrease population rates of specimens that are
essential to an ecosystem. Native species as well as prey and predators are evolved to balance each
other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It s just we have to be very cautious about what species end up being carried off our ships when
traveling to other areas if we are to keep the population of those areas intact so the specimens can
continue to evolve properly. Now it s true that nature is adaptable and some specimens can adapt to
invasive species and the effects it has started with destroying plants or prey specimens, but that takes
thousands of years and the effects end up feeling sudden. Certain crops can be wiped out or some
native animals that we depend on can go extinct as well if something messes with the food lab. That s
why think it s important to inspect cargo for invasive species and educate people about the dangers of
foreign specimens as it doesn t take long and can be include in transportation manuals. These type of
policies have been implemented long time ago and are working pretty fine. Plus, some geneticists and
environmentalists are studying the effects of invasive species so they know which ones are best suited
and which ones they can look out for. This can be good for Oregon to think about when caring about
the population of different

Hybrid Cars And Its Effects On The Environment Essay
In this day and age people argue more often about which kind of car is better overall; is it the internal
combustion engine, ICE, or hybrid car? Consumers are led to believe through advertisements and
online articles that hybrids are a better buy because of their reduced impact on the environment, and
ease of use. These reasons are in fact false because hybrid cars are no better for the environment
because of their production emissions and other variables.
There is a growing scientific consensus that increasing levels of greenhouse gas emissions are
changing the earth s climate. Also oil prices continue to skyrocket while tougher regulations and
policies on permitted exhaust gases are being instituted in major cities of the world. These and some
other related issues are compelling vehicle manufacturers to come up with fuel efficient vehicles.
These types of vehicles are known as hybrid electric vehicles (Omoigui).
Since their invention, most cars use an internal combustion engine, which is what all engines that use
a fuel and pistons. These ICE cars run off of only gas and other forms of fossil fuels. On the other side
of the spectrum, there have more recently been completely electric cars that are quiet and have a large
amount of batteries. In the middle of these two is the hybrid car; there are six different kinds of hybrid
configurations between the ICE and the batteries all with pros and cons. Some reduce emissions of the
ICE and others increase the torque on the axle

less than density. This disproved hypothesis 3 because there is almost no correlation to the amount of
police in an area and the crime rate. The slope was also irrelevant at 3.6. Table 12 compared the
correlation between graduation rate and crime. The correlation between the data sets were .624 wish is
a strong correlation. When graduation rates suffer crime rates increase. The slope for this statistic is
110 which explains that for every 1 percent from 100 a graduation rate is in a city there is an
additional 110 crimes committed per 100,000 people. This is a huge slope which shows how important
education is in crime

A Report On The Seals
It was 0400 at the staging area, the SEALs had shown up in four fully outfitted DPV s (Desert Patrol
Vehicles Off road vehicles used for combat). Captain O Hara wondered where the hell they had been
keeping those. The plan was that the SEALs would for the most part move hard and fast to the
museum and secure it, then hold it until the much larger Marine follow on force arrived. The Marine
follow on force consisted of the entire Marine Company; they had pulled, temporarily, the Marine
platoon from the school to help with this operation. The SEALs would leave at 0415 and they were
itching to go, they were actually looking forward to it. The Marines in armored Humvees and two half
ton trucks, the old M 35 s, would follow thirty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

finding out, it made getting down the roads they needed to quicker and less risky. The SEALs were
driving the DPV s balls out, while the others in the vehicles were looking for potential bad guys. At
five miles out they hadn t seen a living soul, at six and seven miles they had passed through two very
small camps, they surprised the hell out of the occupants, they saw that several members of the camps
were armed but the SEALs passed through them so quick that they didn t have time to react. They
radioed back the information to the main convoy to be on the lookout for the armed civilians in the
camps. At mile eight they entered a large camp that looked to have a population in the hundreds, they
realized they wouldn t be able to go around it; their only option was to pass directly through it. The
road passed through the center of it with all sorts of tents, dwellings made of wood and cardboard,
some people only had a tarp over them. The SEALs moved slowly through the camp, people were

The 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic
The 1918 Spanish Flu Epidemic was a deathly virus that made its way to every across the globe by
1919, leaving a devastating affect on the world s population and leaving many questioning any
previous faith in religion and modern science. This essay will explore the global affect of the Spanish
Flu Epidemic with special reference to its impact on South African society.
Victims of the Spanish flu epidemic suffered from an acute infection in the respiratory system. The
virus itself takes its form in droplets exposed to the air, which could then be transferred from person to
person with ease. Droplets were emitted into the air by an infected person, which could then infect
others who breathed in these droplets. Urbanization, increased travel and the unfortunate late reporting
s of the influenza are factors which contributed to the expansion of the Spanish flu ... Show more

The Boston navy barracks provided that perfect condition for the virus to rapidly multiply, with some
seven thousand men crowded together. The epidemic was thriving and it appeared much like an
explosion as it struck the continents simultaneously and from there it spread rapidly across the globe.
What had been considered a fairly mild influenza had broken out into a pandemic that held a looming
threat over humanity.
The first wave of the Spanish flu epidemic was marked by mild symptoms that shared a familiarity
with the common flu, such as headaches, fevers and an overall weakness. The second wave of the
Spanish flu epidemic brought enhanced and horrifying symptoms. Those who fell ill with the Spanish
flu suffered from labored breathing, vomiting and nausea, bleeding from the nose or mouth and
delirium. The Spanish flu epidemic was decidedly marked by a cracking sound in the chest and by a
distinct odor released by the infected

Symptoms And Symptoms Of Shingles
When I was 11 years old I was brought to the United States leaving family and who I loved behind,
this change in my life triggered my body to go under high levels of stress and getting what is now
called shingles. I did not know what it was at first, it all started with a small red dot which I thought
was just a mosquito bite, however, little did I know this mosquito bite was going to turn into
something very painful. I felt awful and my back, in particular ached and felt very sore. I felt a
burning sensation and penetrating pain like piercing needles in my skin, blisters also appeared and the
rash lasted for about three weeks. It wasn t until years later when I started taking advance science

This virus has a double stranded DNA genome and is also enclosed within an icosahedral capsid,
surrounded by a phospholipid envelope . They are typical symptoms to Chickenpox before the rash
starts to appear, these include; fever, loss of appetite, headache and tiredness, but once the disease
actually appears, it turns into very itchy fluid filled blisters that ultimately turn into dry scabs. The first
spots that the rash may appear is the face and the back, then it quickly spreads to the rest of the body
affecting even genital areas, and inside of the mouth. They are key symptoms that doctors look for to
diagnose chickenpox, many professionals perform a blood test that checks if a person is producing
antibodies to the virus, this to determine whether or not an individual is already immune to it
(chickenpox). Usually, there is no medical test needed, but instead doctor look for common symptoms
to make a clear diagnosis (fever followed by an itchy rash). Still, Chickenpox can be confused with
conditions that affect the skin like scabies or even insect bites, this is why it is crucial to seek
professional help when a person suspects he or she has contracted the varicella zoster virus.
Treatment for chickenpox varies, there are several things a person can do at home to help relieve the
symptoms, for example, colloidal oatmeal baths help with the itching and keeping nails in good health
and trimmed helps to prevent infections cause by scratching

Communication-The Evolution Of The Cell Phone
Communication The Evolution of the Cell Phone The importance of the Smart Phone Could you
imagine going a day without your smart phone? It seems as though everyone now a days owns a smart
phone. Smart phone have became rapidly advanced in such a short amount of time, with the
competition between the two major smart phone companies Apple and Samsung competing to create a
brand a new model every year with new features. The demand for smart phones is increasing and
statistics show that more people have mobile phones than toilets. The time people spend on the cell
phones is mostly spent on apps, and people are spending an average of 3 hours and 23 minutes per day
in apps and only 50 minutes accessing the mobile web. Statistic also show that nearly 75 percent of
US adults will use a smart phone in 2017, and it is continuing to increase. So, how was the smart
phone born? Before the smart phone there were several devices that were used but not until recently
those technologies were combined to create the smart phone. How it all started Hamda Adaweh The
first invention of the cellphone that eventually led to the modern day smartphone was created in 1973.

Stephen Crane Figurative Language Essay
When many people think of war they just think of a bunch of soldiers fighting on a battlefield. Many
people don t think about the families who have just lost loved ones in the war. Some people don t
realize the trauma that the soldiers have to go through because of everything they saw and endured in
the war. Stephen Crane uses figurative language in both his poem and short story to prove that war is
very violent and dangerous. Crane shows his readers different perspectives of the war in order to show
his readers what war is really like. Stephen Crane uses irony in War is Kind and A Mystery of Heroism
to reveal that he is against the war by using figurative language and by showing different perspectives
of the war.

In War is Kind Crane is talking to the soldiers families specifically to a soldiers baby and another
soldiers girlfriend. Crane talks about two different soldiers one from the north and one from the south.
In War is Kind Crane talks about the soldier from the north when he says The unexplained glory flies
above them... because the north is winning. When Crane talks about the south he says Swift, blazing
flag of the regiment... because the south is losing the war. This shows us two different perspectives of
the war the winning side and the losing side. Another perspective Crane shows us is in A Mystery of
Heroism when Collins puts himself in a dangerous situation to prove a point and doesn t realize how
dangerous it really is. Collins only went to go get water after this argument There was a quarrel in A
Company. Collins was shaking his fist in the faces of some laughing comrades. Dern yeh! I ain t afraid
to go. If yeh say much, I will go! Collins gets in an argument with his comrades because they think
that he will not go get water and he puts himself in a dangerous situation not realizing it. Collins didn t
realize that he could die just trying to make a point that he could get water. In the story the soldiers do
not seem to understand that the situation that they are in is actually very dangerous

My Spiritual Journey Essay
My personal religious and spiritual journey began as a young child in Long Island, New York. In fact,
my parents and grandparents often took me to church activities in addition to Sunday services. I was
taught how to pray by my parents as a child and I went to Bible study classes at church. My
grandmother Hannah in my opinion was a calm, wise, caring, affectionate, and strong woman of faith.
I regularly liked to asked her questions because, she was very patient with me. I always said, if I had a
daughter I would name her after my grandma Hannah as I admired her strength. I attended Catholic
schools from first grade to twelfth grade, where I also had religious education classes. I ll never forget
my fourth grade teacher Sister Mary, she was a firm teacher but, she always encouraged my class. She
would tell us you can achieve anything in your life if you try hard, pray and stay strong in your faith.
In my opinion I had several positive major formative influences in my life. After, high school I went to
nursing school in Hicksville, Long Island New York called Vocational Extension Board Practical
Nursing School, a 12 month program. I enjoyed my clinical rotations and having the opportunity to
interact with many people as a young nursing student. Mrs. Arthur one of my nursing instructors was
very supportive to the nursing students when we had our oncology clinical rotations. It was very
difficult to remain positive and not be heartbroken when caring for patients with

Importance Of Tidal Energy
Electricity Culminating
Renewable Energy Project

December 17, 2017
Why should tidal energy be a common renewable energy source in the future?
Tidal energy is a form of hydroelectricity that is provided from the rise and fall of tides. Due to the
Moon s gravitational force, bodies of water rise and fall, the force created can be turned into a form of
renewable energy. Tidal power was first introduced in the 19th century in U.S and Europe. In 1966,
the Rance Tidal Power Station, was operated in France, being the first large scale tidal system. Tidal
energy is more predictable than solar panels and wind turbines. The sun isn t always out to provide
light and the wind depends on the weather. Tides are almost always there and the ocean is more
understood than the temperature or the sun. Tidal energy is much more reliable and renewable than
other sources such as fossil fuels which cause acid rain, and nuclear power and its radiation. Since the
ocean is much denser than air, tidal turbines generate more electricity and therefore are more efficient
compared to wind turbines. Hydro power in general is considered more efficient and converts the most
energy to electricity than other renewable energy sources.
Tidal power is also inexpensive compared to other renewable energy sources as shown below in this
chart.
Tidal power plants also have a very long lifespan. The oldest plant, La Rance, in

merging of two black holes or the orbiting of two neutron stars , which can be expected to cause
gravitational waves large enough for us to detect on Earth, as, in general, any acceleration that is not
spherically or cylindrically symmetric will produce gravitational waves. Another example of this
would be a rotating star. A perfectly spherical star would not produce gravitational waves, however
stars, in practice, are never perfectly spherical, and so they will produce gravitational waves due to the
disturbances caused in the space time continuum.
In 1974, Joseph Taylor and Russell Hulse found such a pair of neutron stars in our own galaxy.[cite]
One of the stars is a pulsar, meaning it beams regular pulses of radio waves toward Earth. Taylor ...

Radio telescopes are similar to optical telescopes however they measure the radio frequency portion of
the electromagnetic spectrum rather than the visible portion. We use radio telescopes to study
naturally occurring radio wavelength light from stars, galaxies, black holes and other astronomical
objects. In order to locate gravitational waves we are looking for oscillations in the images we see, as
gravitational waves will bend light such as radio waves in alternating directions.
WEBER BARS
Simple devices to detect gravitational waves are known as Weber Bars. They were large aluminium
cylinders which had a fixed resonance frequency and the theory was that passing gravitational waves
would cause strains in space which would excite the resonant frequency of the cylinders to detectable
levels, however because these waves were so weak the cylinders needed to be very large and the
sensors has to be capable of detecting a change in the cylinders length by about 10 16 meters.
However, Weber Bars cannot directly measure gravitational waves as they can only detect extremely
strong gravitational waves which rarely if ever pass by at the required strength. Also Weber Bars can
only detect gravitational waves which have a certain frequency that can excite the resonant frequency
of the aluminium cylinders, and so were very limited

  • 2. Exploring the Importance of Traditions in Richard... Any relationship goes two ways to keep our life in balance, and also affect our life whichever of family or culture. As Bernice Weissbourd says: Because it s not only a child is inseparable from the family in which he lives, but that the lives of families are determined by the community in which they live and the cultural tradition from which they come. In Keeper n me, for instance, Garnet Raven who was taken away from his family to a series of white foster homes when he was three. Garnet s experiences as a result of the oppressive political and social policies. Moreover, Keeper as a storyteller tries to pass the message of traditions and a way of life to guide Garnet, who arrived in White Dog reservation with anything but Native, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This quote also foreshadows that he will find a place to belong as far as staying on the reservation to keep in touch with his family and Native culture. During a positive lesson of Native culture, he starts to fit in the society and gets acceptance of people. His mom gives him the shirt that he had on the day he arrived at reserve to remind him of where he came from and how he wanted to be. Although his mom revamps the shirt that the sleeves were cut back regular, the long pointed collar was gone and the ribbons ran across the chest and back and down the arms (Wagamese 301). He learns the traditional ways of Native and makes the connection with people, especially his family, and now he changes the way that he used to dressing. Everyone needs family in order to find themselves, no one could be his own person without knowing himself. The surroundings compel Garnet to learn Whites instead of his own culture cause he lost connection and himself. Setting is one aspect of the culture that affect Garnet s identity in social way. The setting of the book is very important in Garnet s character development and personal growth. The relationship between Garnet and his family is detached because he was raised by foster homes instead of his family, that makes him a lot differences between him and Natives. When he returns to the reserve, he has lots of things need to learn, especially the traditional Native spiritual ways. At the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The House Of Mirth And Gender Roles The House of Mirth was written by Edith Wharton, a successful Pulitzer prize winning author. Wharton grew up enjoying the comforts of the privileged upper class during the late eighteen hundreds and early nineteen hundreds. This unique background is what enables her to write the raw truth behind the social atmosphere among the upper class. This is evident through The House of Mirth because the novel illustrates the life of Lily Bart as she navigates through the elite social jungle. Wharton s personal experience with the privileged upper class society allows her to eloquently depict the luxuries Lily Bart enjoys, such as extravagant vacations, elaborate events, lavish gowns, deluxe meals, and fine wine. However, Wharton also meticulously describes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this time period, woman were suppose to be seen as ornamental figures that did not necessarily do much but establish a dominance for their family name in social circles. Thus, men usually looked for a trophy wife that would highlight their success in the most positive manner, and that was in fact what Mr. Rosedale was looking for when he initially asked Lily Bart to marry him. Wharton makes Mr. Rosedale s marriage proposal to Lily Bart look more like a business proposition which illustrates how love and emotions were not as important as social standing and social power to most of the elite group of wealthy people. Thus, Wharton further establishes the superficial behaviour of the upper class. However, Lily Bart was never one of them, even if she was around them, because her morals and ethics kept her from accepting his proposition. When Lily did spiral towards poverty and social rejection, she was desperate for any security, and she eventually came to accept Rosedale s marriage proposition. However, Rosedale understood that Lily Bart was a social outcast because Judy Trenor and Bertha Dorset had deemed her as such, and that caused him to decline Lily. Thus, when the two most sought after women in the social circle deem you socially unacceptable most everyone else does to. Even though, Mr. Rosedale had an ardent attraction for Lily Bart it was not enough to marry her because his business attitude assured him that Lily Bart would now not benefit him socially because of her social disgrace. He was right in believing money would not solve Lily Bart s issues because to become socially established they needed to be accepted by the social group led by Judy and Bertha. Thus, Mr. Rosedale understood that Lily had failed at her function of being the ideal trophy wife ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The History of the Amish Essay The History of the Amish The Amish, who are also called The Plain People or Old Order Amish, originated in Switzerland in approximately 1525. They originated from a movement called the Anabaptist movement. Jacom Amman was the leader. This happened during the reformation in the16th Century Europe. They believed in holding on to traditions and keeping themselves separated from the world. He was stricter about this than other Anabaptists of that time. The Anabaptists were against the union of church and state and also against infant baptism. They felt that each individual should make this choice for himself when he or she is old enough. However, they are considered the most progressive of the Amish groups. Some of these New Order Groups use telephones, regular air filled tires for their tractors, and even electricity in their homes. Some extreme cases are the conservative Swartzentrubers, and the Nebraska Amish of Central Pennsylvania who do not use indoor plumbing, or motorized machinery of any kind. They also wear even more conservative clothing. The Nebraska Amish, for example, do not wear suspenders or bonnets, and will not even allow screens on their doors and windows. Over 90% of the current Amish population, are from the original emigrant ancestors. There are less than 10% converts included in the total membership. Today there are between 100,000 and 150,000 Amish in North America. The largest group resides in Holmes County, Ohio. Other areas of concentration for the Amish are in Pennsylvania, northern Indiana and Iowa. Fewer still are to be found in the eastern and mid western states and Ontario, Canada. • 6. Master Harold and the boys Master Harold and the boys Inclusion in the Curriculum Essay In his masterpiece Master Harold and the boys, Athol Fugard has journeyed deep into sensitive issues including racism and growing up, without sacrificing the high technical standard that often distinguishes great theatre. The poignant and enlightening journey that is Fugard s piece undoubtedly deserves inclusion in any English curriculum, with the work s characterization, themes, conflicts and motifs all earning this distinction. With only three characters sharing dialogue and one of these playing a minor role, detailed characterization is a highlight of Master Harold and the boys. Thematically, Master Harold and the boys covers two sensitive and important issues, which are key to any education program. The first theme, which must be examined, is that of white superiority and racial segregation, instigated by the Apartheid system. Fugard, through the course of the play, makes it clear in subtle references that the white race is considered to be superior to the black in South African society. One such subtle reference is made when Hally says: Don t try to be clever, Sam. It doesn t suit you. (35). As the climax develops, Fugard begins to display this in more blatant dialogue, with lines such as He s a white man and that s good enough for you (53), reflecting the prejudice and segregation that plagued society at that time. A further example of Fugard s references to this issue of white supremacy is depicted when Sam attempts to convey to Hally the simple beauty of ballroom dancing, yet Hally dismisses it as mentally retarded (39) and the culture of a primitive black society (43). It is not until he puts aside this fa ade provided by white ideology that he can grasp the true worth of Sam s comments. The second major theme in the work is that of growing up, and doing this with the traps of society. Hally is a boy at the crossroads of childhood and manhood, and the opinions and ideals he learns at this point will likely shape the rest of his life. The society of white supremacy ... The common and major barriers are these six: Cliché, Jargon, Slang, Sexist and Racist Language, Euphemisms and Doublespeak. Cliché, Jargon and Slang Cliché is an overused word or phrase that has lost its originality and interest overtime. It loses its impact on the receiver because they avoid the use of the common meaning and at the same time it doesn t focus on the precise usage of the word or phrase. Example: At the end of the day said during a business meeting setting might cause misunderstanding base on the fact that the receiver might interpret that as the literal meaning of the end of that day or ... Example: A common slang I heard about in an American TV series was how workers referred to CEO, COO, CFO... and so on as the c level workers to refer to the high senior workers in the management. Sexist and Racist Language, Euphemisms, Doublespeak Sexist and racist language is a group of slangs joined together to belittle or insult people of different groups, origin and culture. • 10. Muslim Women s Rights Today There are approximately one billion people worldwide that follow the Islamic way of life. Islam is the religion of Allah, and Muhammad his last prophet. They refer to themselves as Muslims. There are many rules for the daily life of Islam. These rules are found in the Qur an, which is their guidebook. Muslims cannot do anything that may be considered harmful to their body, mind, or soul, which is also known as haram. For example, eating pork is not allowed, nor is lying, stealing, or cheating. Muslims are encouraged to do what is beneficial, this is known as halal. Popular culture portrays Muslim women as not having many rights and privileges. Islam does however give women rights which include the right to be educated, work outside of the home and to inherit wealth. Family is considered very important in Islam and obligations to other family members are strongly stressed. It is very common for extended family members to all live together in the same house. Muslim women are allowed to participate in public life as long as their modesty is not affected. They are expected to wear Hijab, or covering, so that their sexuality will not be a source of temptation for men. Their rights, as in all cultures and communities over time, are often violated. As the Muslim empire grew, the role of women changed as well. Muslim men and women were originally seen as equal. The prophet s teachings proclaimed the equality of men and women before God and in Islamic worship. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. How I Learned With Depression Our designated driver is on the floor. With a mouthful of sharp beach sand in his mouth he stays down and screams Darn! Disoriented and dehydrated I look to the top and I see my partners in crime yelling at the top of their lungs from the roof of sun beaten lifeguard tower, Throw some beer in his mouth! With smile football stadiums wide I look down at my bare skin. Covered only by boxers, soaked by the oceans bitter cold waters, there I was; tears running down my cheeks freezing like a nude fool. I had found what I was always looking for, and it turned out what I was looking for I had the entire time. Growing up with depression can be hard. It can be especially hard when you don t know you have it. I was informed of my depression after a series of test and numerous trips to the doctors. I didn t enjoy many of things other people did when I was younger due to my depression, but as I got older, dealing with my depression came to be harder and harder. I showed no interest in anything or anyone. Things I ones use to love to do no longer called my name. My guitar gathered dust, my skateboards corroded with the seasons, my hopes to ever feel normal again gone. Constantly getting different medications was the worst part. I never knew if that day I would be happy, sad, mad, or my all time favorite, suicidal. Eventually I learned how to deal with my depression, given the right cocktail of pills that is. • 12. The Role Of Spna As A Cell Wall Figure 1: Kaplan Meier survival curves of wax worms infected with labelled dose (CFUs) of GAS SpnA variants over 3 days **** P 0.05 (One way ANOVA) A methyl green assay allows quantification of DNAse activity by measuring the change in absorbance as the methyl green DNA complex is degraded (Sinicropi et al. 1994). The SpnA knockout had significantly lower DNAse function than wildtype GAS whilst the non functional complements showed similar activity to the knockouts and the functional complements showed an intermediate function in between that of the knockout and that of the wildtype (Fig. 5) All strains showed higher activity than buffer alone (Fig. 5). Discussion Previous experiments have characterised the role of SpnA as a cell wall anchored DNAse important for immune evasion through the destruction of neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) (Buchanan et al. 2006). While small scale in vivo experiments in mice have been conducted (Hasegawa et al. 2010), a Galleria mellonella infection model allows for a larger scale screening of mutants to further refine the role of SpnA in GAS virulence. This is due to the lower cost, easy maintenance, small size and suitability of the wax worm (Ramarao et al. 2012). In the above experiments, the role of SpnA in GAS virulence was clearly demonstrated by the significant difference in killing and the health index of the caterpillars between wild type and ΔSpnA. They also revealed that complementation with cell wall bound SpnA on a plasmid ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

We suffer for a long time by trying to find our happiness for healing ourselves. Are scares not the symbol of experience? Are they not the things that make us who we are? In my life I have learned that we need to remember the scars, whether emotional or physical. Sometimes they can be positive and keep the memories of self esteem and honor. It s what you do, and how you act while you re in that position that makes you into a strong leader. John Kotter (1990) argues that management focuses on coping with complexity through the use of the basic managerial functions of planning, organizing, and control. Robert House and R. J. Home Depot Inc. s (HD) board of directors wanted their controversial chief executive, Robert L. Nardelli; to amend his whopping compensation deals for recent years. After he pulled down $38.1 million from his last yearly contract, angry investors were promising an ugly fight at the company s annual meeting in May. The problem with when you introduce alien species to another land is that they can decrease population rates of specimens that are essential to an ecosystem. Native species as well as prey and predators are evolved to balance each other ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s just we have to be very cautious about what species end up being carried off our ships when traveling to other areas if we are to keep the population of those areas intact so the specimens can continue to evolve properly. Now it s true that nature is adaptable and some specimens can adapt to invasive species and the effects it has started with destroying plants or prey specimens, but that takes thousands of years and the effects end up feeling sudden. Certain crops can be wiped out or some native animals that we depend on can go extinct as well if something messes with the food lab. That s why think it s important to inspect cargo for invasive species and educate people about the dangers of foreign specimens as it doesn t take long and can be include in transportation manuals. These type of policies have been implemented long time ago and are working pretty fine. Plus, some geneticists and environmentalists are studying the effects of invasive species so they know which ones are best suited and which ones they can look out for. This can be good for Oregon to think about when caring about the population of different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. Hybrid Cars And Its Effects On The Environment Essay In this day and age people argue more often about which kind of car is better overall; is it the internal combustion engine, ICE, or hybrid car? Consumers are led to believe through advertisements and online articles that hybrids are a better buy because of their reduced impact on the environment, and ease of use. These reasons are in fact false because hybrid cars are no better for the environment because of their production emissions and other variables. There is a growing scientific consensus that increasing levels of greenhouse gas emissions are changing the earth s climate. Also oil prices continue to skyrocket while tougher regulations and policies on permitted exhaust gases are being instituted in major cities of the world. These and some other related issues are compelling vehicle manufacturers to come up with fuel efficient vehicles. These types of vehicles are known as hybrid electric vehicles (Omoigui). Since their invention, most cars use an internal combustion engine, which is what all engines that use a fuel and pistons. These ICE cars run off of only gas and other forms of fossil fuels. On the other side of the spectrum, there have more recently been completely electric cars that are quiet and have a large amount of batteries. In the middle of these two is the hybrid car; there are six different kinds of hybrid configurations between the ICE and the batteries all with pros and cons. Some reduce emissions of the ICE and others increase the torque on the axle ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Linear Regression Line Next the linear regression line is the line that finds the average of all x coordinates and the average of all y coordinates to create a linear formula that shows the direction of the points and at which intensity the slope of the data is. The equation for finding the slope of the data provided is seen on the right and the variables include, the correlation coefficient, and the standard deviation of x and y. This shows us the correlation of any two plot points. If the slope is higher then it shows a more positive correlation and if the slope is a large negative then it shows a negative correlation. The correlation coefficient was .11 which suggested that there was a slight correlation between the two variables. This was not as strong as I expected to find because of crime rates in high density areas tending to be higher. The slope was also .021 which means even if there was a strong correlation coefficient it would still be negligible. Density is not a contributing factor when in relation to crime rates, disproving hypothesis 1. Next in table 10 the amount of police per square mile is substituted as the x interval where crime rate stays the same as y. The correlation coefficient was .08 which is even less than density. This disproved hypothesis 3 because there is almost no correlation to the amount of police in an area and the crime rate. The slope was also irrelevant at 3.6. Table 12 compared the correlation between graduation rate and crime. The correlation between the data sets were .624 wish is a strong correlation. When graduation rates suffer crime rates increase. The slope for this statistic is 110 which explains that for every 1 percent from 100 a graduation rate is in a city there is an additional 110 crimes committed per 100,000 people. This essay will explore the global affect of the Spanish Flu Epidemic with special reference to its impact on South African society. Victims of the Spanish flu epidemic suffered from an acute infection in the respiratory system. The virus itself takes its form in droplets exposed to the air, which could then be transferred from person to person with ease. Droplets were emitted into the air by an infected person, which could then infect others who breathed in these droplets. Many people don t think about the families who have just lost loved ones in the war. Some people don t realize the trauma that the soldiers have to go through because of everything they saw and endured in the war. Stephen Crane uses figurative language in both his poem and short story to prove that war is very violent and dangerous. Crane shows his readers different perspectives of the war in order to show his readers what war is really like. • 30. Importance Of Tidal Energy Electricity Culminating Renewable Energy Project Nazia Nusrat SNC 1D A. Cook December 17, 2017 Why should tidal energy be a common renewable energy source in the future? Tidal energy is a form of hydroelectricity that is provided from the rise and fall of tides. Due to the Moon s gravitational force, bodies of water rise and fall, the force created can be turned into a form of renewable energy. Tidal power was first introduced in the 19th century in U.S and Europe. In 1966, the Rance Tidal Power Station, was operated in France, being the first large scale tidal system. Tidal energy is more predictable than solar panels and wind turbines. The sun isn t always out to provide light and the wind depends on the weather. Tides are almost always there and the ocean is more understood than the temperature or the sun. Tidal energy is much more reliable and renewable than other sources such as fossil fuels which cause acid rain, and nuclear power and its radiation. Since the ocean is much denser than air, tidal turbines generate more electricity and therefore are more efficient compared to wind turbines. Hydro power in general is considered more efficient and converts the most energy to electricity than other renewable energy sources. Tidal power is also inexpensive compared to other renewable energy sources as shown below in this chart. Tidal power plants also have a very long lifespan. The oldest plant, La Rance, in ... Early Universe Cosmology merging of two black holes or the orbiting of two neutron stars , which can be expected to cause gravitational waves large enough for us to detect on Earth, as, in general, any acceleration that is not spherically or cylindrically symmetric will produce gravitational waves. Another example of this would be a rotating star. A perfectly spherical star would not produce gravitational waves, however stars, in practice, are never perfectly spherical, and so they will produce gravitational waves due to the disturbances caused in the space time continuum. In 1974, Joseph Taylor and Russell Hulse found such a pair of neutron stars in our own galaxy.[cite] One of the stars is a pulsar, meaning it beams regular pulses of radio waves toward Earth. Radio telescopes are similar to optical telescopes however they measure the radio frequency portion of the electromagnetic spectrum rather than the visible portion. We use radio telescopes to study naturally occurring radio wavelength light from stars, galaxies, black holes and other astronomical objects. WEBER BARS Simple devices to detect gravitational waves are known as Weber Bars. They were large aluminium cylinders which had a fixed resonance frequency and the theory was that passing gravitational waves would cause strains in space which would excite the resonant frequency of the cylinders to detectable levels, however because these waves were so weak the cylinders needed to be very large and the sensors has to be capable of detecting a change in the cylinders length by about 10 16 meters. However, Weber Bars cannot directly measure gravitational waves as they can only detect extremely strong gravitational waves which rarely if ever pass by at the required strength. Also Weber Bars can only detect gravitational waves which have a certain frequency that can excite the resonant frequency of the aluminium cylinders, and so were very limited ...
