RESPONDING TO POETRY
Part 3 - Revision
REVISION: IN CLASS
• Ask your listeners to respond by:
i. Pointing, without discussion, to memorable phrases or ideas;
ii. Saying back to you (the writer) what your listener has heard, in an
inquisitive tone that invites you to elaborate;
iii. Believing the primary assertions your listener has heard by offering
additional supporting evidence from the poem and then doubting these
assertions by pointing to aspects of the poem that seem to contradict your
point of view
REVISION: ON YOUR OWN
• Revise, considering insights gained from your listeners' responses and the
following questions:
• What have you not accounted for in your writing about the poem?
• What additional images do you want to look at?
• Do you need to say anything about tone of voice, syntax, persona?
• What haven't you quite said?
• What doesn't satisfy you?
• What questions do you still have?

  • 2. REVISION: IN CLASS • Ask your listeners to respond by: i. Pointing, without discussion, to memorable phrases or ideas; ii. Saying back to you (the writer) what your listener has heard, in an inquisitive tone that invites you to elaborate; iii. Believing the primary assertions your listener has heard by offering additional supporting evidence from the poem and then doubting these assertions by pointing to aspects of the poem that seem to contradict your point of view
  • 3. REVISION: ON YOUR OWN • Revise, considering insights gained from your listeners' responses and the following questions: • What have you not accounted for in your writing about the poem? • What additional images do you want to look at? • Do you need to say anything about tone of voice, syntax, persona? • What haven't you quite said? • What doesn't satisfy you? • What questions do you still have?
