• On a scratch sheet of paper, make a list of the
  important events of Act V.
• What can you recall?
CLOSE READING
• Individually, read through your passage two or
  three times.
• As you read, underline or identify anything that
  you feel is interesting, difficult, or confusing.
• Join a group of about 3-4 students and share
  your findings with your group. Try to work
  through anything that may have been
  confusing. 5-10 minutes

• Why is Romeo here?
• What happened right before
      Romeo starts his monologue?
• What is it that he is saying in this passage? Why?
• What do his words and then actions say about
  him?
• What is Romeo’s emotional state?
ACTIVITY 1
  • Your group will be assigned two short clips
    of Romeo’s monologue being performed.
    Using the questions provided to you and
    your previous understanding of this
    monologue, watch the clips and respond
    to them. Please watch each clip at least
    twice.
  • Discuss the clips together as a group.

 • How did the actor/director emphasize or de-emphasize
   certain parts? For example close ups, flailing arms, loud or
   soft voices.

   that?
 • Think about your interpretation earlier in the class. Does
   this video match your interpretation of Romeo? Why or
   why not?
 • Which video best embodies your interpretation of
   Romeo's character at his time of death? Why?
Discussion and Final Activity
• After viewing the different video interpretations of Romeo
  and the class discussion, describe Romeo’s character at this
  point.
• Within your group consider…
 • Was Romeo motivated by love or mental insanity at the time
   of his suicide?
 • Take a stance on what you believe was the motivation for
   Romeo’s suicide.
 • Translate his final monologue to a dramatic interpretation
   influenced by his motivation, meaning rephrase the entire
   passage to create an argument for either position.
 • Your group will be performing your interpretation in front of
   the class.
