who guards the innocence of youth, and the caught , the embodiment of youthful
purity that must be protected. Salinger uses shifts of clothing as a recurring motif to
signify shifts of position and destinies (Takeuchi), emphasizing how one s role in life
can be fluid, not static. Throughout his journey, Holden Caulfield, the main
protagonist and narrator of Catcher in the Rye, exhibits this through clothing such as
his red hunting hat. Holden claims this hat to be a people shooting hat (Catcher in the
Rye), representing his role as the catcher who seeks to hunt down the purity of
childhoodin other humans, not animals. Holden perceives Phoebe as perfect,
constantly contrasting her the the phonies he meets. In doing so, Salinger denotes
Phoebe as the ideal Holden seeks. Despite his hat denoting him as the catcher at
first , Holden will at times adorn it, at others conceal it, or even transfer it to
Phoebe, along with its connotative meanings. By doing this, Holden entirely diverts
the traditional distinction, made by western society, between those who hunt, seek,
or catch other animals, to the prey they chase, and instead shows how Holden
seeks to preserve childhood innocence, yet, at times, needs the support of his sister
when he is devastated. Holden s role as the catcher is constantly changing and
cannot be confined to the single definition that Holden himself creates for the
catcher in the rye as the person who only protects children from danger, but rather,
must not be seen as an absolute. Holden himself realizes this at the climax of the
books as he watches Phoebe ride the carousel and comments that if they fall off, they
fall off, but it s bad if you say anything to them even though it contradicts his previous
claim that he wants to stop children from failing in any way (Weesner) as the catcher
