Traveling Through the Dark by William Stafford
In his poem, Traveling Through the Dark, William Stafford presents the reader with
the difficulty of one man s choice. Immediately, the scene is set, with the driver, who
is traveling though the dark (line 1) coming upon a recently killed deer. At first, his
decision with what to do with the deer is easy; he knows he must push it off the
edge for the safety of other motorists, but then, a closer examination of the deer
reveals to the man new circumstances. His decision is now perplexing, and his course
of action is unclear. Through his use of metaphor, symbolism, and personification,

The deceased deer is what forces the man to stop along the road, and death in general
is what causes humans to stop along their path and take time to make decisions.
One main way the theme of death is illustrated is through symbolism of the deer,
canyon, and river. The deer is a roadblock which must be dealt with before the man
can continue on his journey. He cannot simply push death to the side of the road.
Here, the deer would rot and fester; instead, as Stafford states in the first stanza, it
is usually best to roll them into the canyon (line 3). The way to deal with this
problem is to discard of it immediately and to not hesitate at all. Literally, this is
true for the safety of other motorists. Furthermore, it is necessary to deal properly
with this problem so one can continue on their path in life. The canyon, and river at
the bottom, therefore come to symbolize the depth of our individual souls; we push
problems into our souls, and slowly deal with them. By doing this, our problems and
death, may be symbolically washed away.
Another way the decisions made when stopping along the road of life are
symbolized is through Stafford?s use of the double entendre swerving (lines 4, 17).
Literally, when explaining why the man should move the deer, Stafford writes, to
swerve [in a car] might make more dead (line 4). This also refers to a swerve in

toward the throat. This process allows the mucus to be expelled or swallowed

Inhalation of smoke, over times, will destroy cilia, and they no longer remove mucus

believable reality, I have some other views. My views dig past the screen and break
apart the struggles and decisions Burton made while directing. While I agree with
Hoffman, who noted this film is Tim Burton s best in 20 years (2016), there are
some scenes that left me confused and upset. To begin breaking down the
adaptation, it must first be placed in a category. This category tells us which form of
adaptation it is and what we can expect under these circumstances. I, personally,
categorize this as a pluralist adaptation. During my screening of the film, I spent a
good chunk of my timelooking for the analogies and similarities between the two.

Complicated Grief is an intense and long lasting form of grief that takes over a
person s life. Experiencing grief is natural, but complicated grief is a form of grief
that takes hold of a person s mind and will not let go. For most people, grief never
completely goes, but over time, healing diminishes the pain of a loss.
Thoughts and memories of a loved one are deeply interwoven into a person s mind,
defining their history. Missing deceased loved ones may be an ongoing part of the
lives of bereaved people, but it should not interrupt life activities. However, this is
exactly what happens when someone is suffering from complicated grief.
The term complicated refers to factors that interfere with the natural healing process.

Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) is a privately held, debt free,
company that is a global leader in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) software
used for visualization and analysis of geographic data by institutional users across the
globe. ESRI has pioneered this technology for four decades as it pursued its founder
leader Jack Dangermond s mission to change the world by making it spatially

electronic maps with live data and interactivity on the internet enabled desktops of ...
By the end of 2006, many additional interactive features were available on these
electronic maps. For example, in addition to getting directions from one point to
another, one could also look up real time traffic along the route, in addition to
locating a hotel on a map, one could also locate the nearby businesses and tourist
attractions. Related technologies started to appear in mobile devices from cell
phone to automobiles. Cars could be equipped with devices that linked to the
satellite Global Positioning System that could provide driving directions as well as
local information as one drove through an area, and cell phones could be tracked to
their exact locations.
Jack s vision of a geographically enabled world was coming true, except that it was
happening with technologies and companies that were unrelated to ESRI or even

The Plague of Athens, taking place in 429 B.C.E., is the first mass killing plague
known to historians today. However, this doesn t mean that it wasn t as dangerous as

Through his research in his story The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat
Oliver Sacks presents a seemingly neurotypical man who physically sees in the
most peculiar ways. The patient, Dr. P, often sees objects and people as different
than what they are. For example, he mistakes his foot for a shoe or his wife s head
