The document summarizes several ways the U.S. government expanded its powers during World War I on the home front, including establishing agencies to coordinate war production and labor relations. The War Industries Board was granted powers to control industries, resources, and set prices to increase production. The War Labor Board supported workers' rights but also limited strikes. The Committee on Public Information promoted propaganda. Civil liberties were restricted under new laws. These expanded federal powers led to post-war unrest and oppression of leftist groups.
In 2009, when I was working for the Region of Peel government, Canada, I successfully used patent mapping to identify 20 US patent intensive companies as the potential employers for highly educated immigrants. Following this initiative, I created a Canadian patent competitive intelligence (CI) database to track the latest patent competence of over 4000 Canadian entities, in all sector and from coast to coast in Canada, on a weekly basis. My work with Region of Peel from 2010 to 2012 showed that this database can provide the "no-older-than-7-day" intelligence for long-term strategic research/planning and short-term tactics. This is also the first attempt in Canada to use patent landscape as a regional economic strength indicator and a baseline for policy harmonization and policy performance evaluation.

Liberalism in the American Foreign PolicyIssa Adeli
Liberalism is the buzzword for foreign policy practitioners in the US. Patrick Kallahan, in his book, "Logics of American Foreign Policy, Theories of America’s World Role", explains why.
A. Philip Randolph represented the perfect blend between the civil rights and labor communities. Randolph fully understood the struggle for human and civil rights should involve all of the tools and resources that we had at our disposal. Indeed, Mr. Randolph was the conscience of organized labor in that he sought to get the trade union movement to set its own house in order. He urged and challenged organized labor to join in the struggle of African Americans for freedom and equality. A. Philip Randolph helped to draft the “strongest statement of labor’s position on civil rights ever to come before a convention of the AFL-CIO.” Randolph, the labor leader and civil rights leader was also called a dreamer of dreams.
The pivotal role of the Black Church in the lives of African Americans can not be described in words short of “life saving.” The church provided the foundation for the very survival of African Americans in North America during and after slavery. It has been noted that most of the first Black congregations and churches formed before 1800 were founded by free Blacks. These individuals saw the church as an institution that could provide earthly comforts, and eventually, heavenly salvation.
The Black Church has played - - and continue to play - - different roles in the lives of their members. First and foremost, the church has played a religious role. The church has been that calming element in the Black community. The church has also served as the one institution in the Black community where a variety of causes and organizations could meet and develop strategies and tactics to deal with pressing short and long-term issues in the community. The church provided a ready made laboratory for different groups to experiment with ways to solve and address concern in the community.
The Black church has been the keeper of the cultural trends in the community. The varying organizations have used the church as the foundation for building and developing the cultural components in most communities. The birthing of different economic development groups has occurred over time in the Black Church. These organizations have used the captured membership as a way to execute ideas to enhance the Black Community.
The central role of the Black Church in the modern-day Civil Rights Movement will be explored from all perspectives. To be sure, those civil rights organizations that were not founded in the church were profoundly influenced by church leaders and their membership.
There are four major strains of thought in the universe of Black Nationalism. Those strains are Cultural Black Nationalism., Religious Black Nationalism, Political Black Nationalism, and Economic Black Nationalism. We will explore what has been described as the three periods of Black Nationalism. The first period was pre-classical African Nationalism or what has been called Pan-Negro Nationalism.
After the Revolutionary War the second period occurred which was characterized by a critical mass of Africans brought to New England and Pennsylvania by the European Colonizers. This period witnessed the development of the Free African Society, African Masonic Lodges and Black Churches. These institutions were founded and developed by individuals such as Prince Hall and Richard Allen. The Post-Reconstruction Era marked the third period of Black Nationalism which was associated with the flowering of a variety of African American clergy circles. This period ushered in what has been described as modern-day Black Nationalism. Indeed, the term “Black Nationalism” has been used in American History to describe a body of social thought, attitudes, and actions ranging from the simplest expressions of ethnocentrism and racial solidarity to the comprehensive and sophisticated ideologies of Pan-Negroism to Pan-Africanism.” We will trace the development of Black Nationalism through the thinking of people such as Richard Allen, Marcus Garvey, George Padmore, Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad, Reverend Albert Cleage and the phenomenon know as Black Power.
In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.
