2. Why?
In your table groups, discuss the following;
• What are your personal reasons for wanting to
engage with employability?
• What are the drivers?
• Where/what is your evidence for this?
• Who have you spoken to about it?
Create a summary of your discussions and
feedback

6. What?
In your table groups discuss the areas that you think are
most important to you – these might include, but are not
restricted to
• Curriculum design and/or delivery
• Assessment and feedback
• Work experience
• Reflective practice and articulation
• Mentoring – employer or peer-based
Discuss what the current level of activity is in each of
these areas and then consider what you would like it to
be.
This is essentially a baseline review and creation of a
capability-maturity map – it will help you to accelerate
the ‘how’
Feedback one area of activity
7. How
In pairs – discuss ONE area in detail – and find answers
for the following;
• What resources will you need? Time? Expertise?
• What permissions (if any) do you need?
• What are likely to be the inhibitors or challenges of
making this change happen?
• Who are the key stakeholders in this – what level do
you want them engaged at?
Discuss your paired findings with the wider group – are
there any shared or common themes?
Summarise your discussions to feedback
8. Being heard at the party…
In your table groups – pick one of the activities you’ve
discussed – together, write a one minute elevator pitch of
why, what, and how you are going to make this change
happen for the following audiences
•
•
•
•
Internal partners
Students
Employers
Society
Be prepared to pitch at least one of these to the wider group!
9. Next?!
Use this as a template to address your own
practice and facilitate change!
Thank you for your attention and engagement –
I hope you feel empowered by it!

Editor's Notes
Thank you all for attending the workshop – I am slightly overwhelmed by the numbers, but delighted to see so many of you and I hope that you find the next hour and a half both challenging and fruitful – my ambition for this session is to give you space to consider your own ‘why’ to consider the institutional position you are working within and to have you fashion your own action plan to develop your practice beyond this room. The handouts you have will be pivotal to your articulation of this and
Nothing is more powerful than enabling people to understand why they are doing something – if you are able as practitioners, policy makers and educators to establish why you are engaging in employability, you will be better equipped to face the challenges you may encounter or the permissions and relationships you may need to nurture in order to achieve your own ‘employability’ approach.
