Workplace violence is any physical assault, threatening behavior, or verbal abuse occurring in the workplace and can include aggravated assault, sexual assault, product tampering, sabotage, and homicide. 2. The Center for Disease Control considers workplace violence to have reached epidemic proportions, with around 111,000 violent incidents and 50-1,000 homicides occurring in workplaces each year. It is the second leading cause of workplace deaths overall and the leading cause for female workers. 3. Potential causes of violent acts include disgruntled employees, domestic disturbances spilling into the workplace, and delusional persons who perceive some wrong against their organization. There is no set profile for perpetrators.
