FMMs – Flexibility Redefined

DPDK greatly improves packet processing performance and throughput by allowing applications to directly access hardware and bypass kernel involvement. It can improve performance by up to 10 times, allowing over 80 Mbps throughput on a single CPU or double that with two CPUs. This enables telecom and networking equipment manufacturers to develop products faster and with lower costs. DPDK achieves these gains through techniques like dedicated core affinity, userspace drivers, polling instead of interrupts, and lockless synchronization.

Building efficient 5G NR base stations with Intel® Xeon® Scalable Processors

Speaker: Daniel Towner, System Architect for Wireless Access, Intel Corporation 5G brings many new capabilities over 4G including higher bandwidths, lower latencies, and more efficient use of radio spectrum. However, these improvements require a large increase in computing power in the base station. Fortunately the Xeon Scalable Processor series (Skylake-SP) recently introduced by Intel has a new high-performance instruction set called Intel® Advanced Vector Extensions 512 (Intel® AVX-512) which is capable of delivering the compute needed to support the exciting new world of 5G. In his talk Daniel will give an overview of the new capabilities of the Intel AVX-512 instruction set and show why they are so beneficial to supporting 5G efficiently. The most obvious difference is that Intel AVX-512 has double the compute performance of previous generations of instruction sets. Perhaps surprisingly though it is the addition of brand new instructions that can make the biggest improvements. The new instructions mean that software algorithms can become more efficient, thereby enabling even more effective use of the improvements in computing performance and leading to very high performance 5G NR software implementations.

Scaling the Container Dataplane

Vector Packet Technologies such as DPDK and FD.io/VPP revolutionized software packet processing initially for discrete appliances and then for NFV use cases. Container based VNF deployments and it's supporting NFV infrastructure is now the new frontier in packet processing and has number of strong advocates among both traditional Comms Service Providers and in the Cloud. This presentation will give an overview of how DPDK and FD.io/VPP project are rising to meet the challenges of the Container dataplane. The discussion will provide an overview of the challenges, recent new features and what is coming soon in this exciting new area for the software dataplane, in both DPDK and FD.io/VPP! About the speaker: Ray Kinsella has been working on Linux and various other open source technologies for about twenty years. He is recently active in open source communities such as VPP and DPDK but is a constant lurker in many others. He is interested in the software dataplane and optimization, virtualization, operating system design and implementation, communications and networking.

Using VPP and SRIO-V with Clear Containers

Clear Containers is an Open Containers Initiative (OCI) “runtime” that launches an Intel VT-x secured hypervisor rather than a standard Linux container. An introduction of Clear Containers will be provided, followed by an overview of CNM networking plugins which have been created to enhance network connectivity using Clear Containers. More specifically, we will show demonstrations of using VPP with DPDK and SRIO-v based networks to connect Clear Containers. Pending time we will provide and walk through a hands on example of using VPP with Clear Containers. About the speaker: Manohar Castelino is a Principal Engineer for Intel’s Open Source Technology Center. Manohar has worked on networking, network management, network processors and virtualization for over 15 years. Manohar is currently an architect and developer with the ciao (clearlinux.org/ciao) and the clear containers (https://github.com/01org/cc-oci-runtime) projects focused on networking. Manohar has spoken at many Container Meetups and internal conferences.

Abstract: Although new non-volatile media inherently offers very low latency, remote access using protocols such as NVMe-oF and presenting the data to VMs via virtualized interfaces such as virtio adds considerable software overhead. One way to reduce the overhead is to use the Storage Performance Development Kit (SPDK), an open-source software project that provides building blocks for scalable and efficient storage applications with breakthrough performance. Comparing the software paths for virtualizing block storage I/O illustrates the advantages of the SPDK-based approach. Empirical data shows that using SPDK can improve CPU efficiency by up to 10 x and reduce latency up to 50% over existing methods. Future enhancements for SPDK will make its advantages even greater. Making Networking Apps Scream on Windows with DPDK

Abstract: Network bandwidth is precious and milliseconds matter for many user-mode applications and virtual appliances running on both Linux and Windows. In order to get the best network throughput to process and forward packets, developers need direct access to the NIC without going through the host networking stack. Until now, only developers on Linux and FreeBSD platforms were able to use DPDK to obtain these performance benefits but, we are happy to announce that we have an implementation of DPDK for the Windows platform! Intel, with consultation from Microsoft, created a UIO driver for the Windows kernel to enable DPDK-linked applications running in user-mode to have direct access to NIC hardware resources through a Poll Mode Driver (PMD). We will demonstrate a test application with the same packets per second processing capabilities as Linux. Lastly, we will talk about the evolution of Microsoft Packet Direct and the differences we see between kernel-mediated IO and fast packet processing for user-mode applications with custom protocol stacks. Speaker Bios: Omar Cardona is a Software Engineering Lead at Microsoft. He drives the design and architecture of Windows Virtual Networking/SDN and accelerations. He’s currently focused on Server and Container solutions for Private and Public Cloud. This document provides an overview of Vector Packet Processing (VPP), an open source packet processing platform developed as part of the FD.io project. VPP is based on DPDK for high performance packet processing in userspace. It includes a full networking stack and can perform L2/L3 forwarding and routing at speeds of over 14 million packets per second on a single core. VPP processing is divided into individual nodes connected by a graph. Packets are passed between nodes as vectors to support batch processing. VPP supports both single and multicore modes using different threading models. It can be used to implement routers, switches, and other network functions and topologies.

The data stored on the blockchain is replicated across all nodes in the network, ensuring accessibility to all participants. While this aspect facilitates traceability, integrity, and persistence, it poses challenges for adopting public blockchains in enterprise settings due to confidentiality issues. In this paper, we present a software tool named Control Access via Key Encryption (CAKE), designed to ensure data confidentiality in scenarios involving public blockchains. After outlining its core components and functionalities, we showcase the application of CAKE in the context of a real-world cyber-security project within the logistics domain.
