2. In a nutshell
• Prevent is the Government’s
strategy to stop people becoming
terrorists or supporting terrorism,
in all its forms. It is part of the
governments counter-terrorism
strategy – CONTEST
• Prevent is the early intervention
stage – encouraging individuals
and communities to challenge
extremist and terrorist ideology
and behaviour.
3. • The Counter-Terrorism and Security Act,
places a duty on specified authorities,
including schools, to have “due regard “to the
need to prevent people from being drawn into
terrorism (“the Prevent duty”).
• This duty aims to reinforce existing duties
placed upon educational establishments for
keeping children safe
4. How?
BY -
• Ensuring a curriculum is in place promoting the spiritual,
moral, social and cultural development of pupils – we need
to talk to the pupils about it!
• Assessing the risk of our pupils being drawn into extremist
views – our pupils are vulnerable – the risk is there!
• Ensuring safeguarding arrangements by working in
partnership with local authorities, police and communities.
• Training staff to provide them with the knowledge and
ability to identify pupils at risk.
• Keeping pupils safe online, using effective filtering and
usage policies.
5. OfSTED View….
• Ofsted’s inspection process will evaluate the
school’s approach to keeping pupils safe from
the dangers of radicalisation and extremism,
and what is done when it is suspected that
pupils are vulnerable in this way. It is
important that we understand the
expectations of the guidance and legislation.
6. What is Channel?
• Channel is a programme which focuses on
providing support at an early stage to people
who are identified as being vulnerable to
being drawn into terrorism. The aims of
Channel are to support and protect people
who may be susceptible to radicalisation and
ensure they have the resilience to resist all
forms of violent extremism.
7. What have we put in place?
• Staff at Mount Tamar underwent a Workshop to
Raise Awareness of Prevent (WRAP) last
September. This gave us an understanding of the
Prevent strategy and our role within it.
• Our own Prevent training this term showed us
how to use own existing expertise and
professional judgment to recognise potentially
vulnerable individuals who may need support and
knowledge of when, how and where to refer
concerns about our students .
8. What next……
• Carry on the good work that we already do.
• Increase our use terminology
• Guest speakers
• Visits to faith Centres in Plymouth
• Teach RESPECT – this is where the seed will
grow…………
