Cardiac Surgery With Cardiopulmonary Bypass Essay
Introduction
Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is one of the most widely recognized
major surgical procedures worldwide. Renal failure is a noteworthy cause of morbidity and
mortality after cardiac surgery.1,2 Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in about 20 40% of
patients3 and is associated with a mortality rate of 8% compared with 0.9% in patients without
AKI. AKI requiring hemodialysis in the postoperative period is uncommon (~ 1% to 5%), yet
associated with a remarkably high mortality rate of 30% to 60%.4 (11 13). AKI increases the risk
for ensuing chronic kidney disease and kidney failure, with its associated morbidity and mortality.5
Clinical prediction tools have been developed to estimate the possibility of cardiac surgery
associated AKI (CSA AKI).8 10 These have recognized female gender, impaired left ventricular
function, insulin requiring diabetes, emergency surgery, and abnormal baseline renal function as
independent predictors of requirement for dialysis.23 Pathophysiological mechanisms of CSA AKI
include decreased renal perfusion, lack of pulsatile flow, oxidative stress, hypothermia,
atheroembolism, and inflammation 23. The main mechanism of injury is thought to be
intraoperative ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI).20 Prolonged duration of cardiopulmonary bypass
(CPB) and its inflammatory response, and prolonged aortic cross clamping are the leading factors
associated with an increased likelihood of cardiac ischemia reperfusion injury.22 Although

Leo Tolstoy Civil Disobedience
Civil disobedience is an old philosophy from the Greeks, but it has been used all over the world
and throughout history. Civil disobedience is a legal norm, to be obeyed. Socrates was a Greek
philosopher who was involved in civil disobedience. Socrates came up with the original idea of,
civil disobedience. About two thousand years later, Henry David Thoreau, defends the idea that
passive resistance is a right and duty of democratic citizens (Summa). More recent events that have
led to civil disobediencewould include Martin Luther King Jr. civil rights demonstrations in the
South during the 1960 s. He had a charge against him for parading without a permit. Civil

charging are studied. With the increase in number of people using mobiles, the physical cables
used for the charging of the devices also increased. This increase in demand for the cables led to
the idea of Wireless charging. Wireless charging initially was a novelty but with the advancement
in technology, it has become a mainstream application now. Experiments have been conducted on
the various methods used for the wireless charging and some of the methods are discussed in the
paper. Keywords: wireless power transfer, resonant inductive coupling, ecoupled technology,
nano battery, solar panel. INTRODUCTION: A mobile phone charger is devised to recharge the
battery in mobile unit. A car s battery was placed directly inside the phones were used initially
instead of cell phone batteries which are used today. Most early cell phones were only able to be
used in a vehicle because they needed such large amounts of battery power. [1] Mobile phone
batteries evolved and improved with the time with different materials being used with the
advancement in technology. Nickel Cadmium mobile Phone Batteries were used in 1980 1990.The

Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment Essay
Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment
The Enlightenment was a time of great innovation and evolution. One of the most significant
movements which owes at least the majority of its beginnings to the Enlightenment is the
architectural and artistic movement of Neoclassicism. This Neoclassicism of the mid eighteenth to
mid nineteenth centuries is one that valued ancient Greek, Roman, and
Etruscan artistic ideals.
These ideals, including order, symmetry, and balance, were considered by many European
generations to be the highest point of artistic excellence. Although many movements in European art
were largely devoid of classical characteristics, they were always looked to as sources of inspiration
and were revived as significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The pettiness of these movements had created a backlash and these thinkers and art critics
welcomed the harsher and more ordered Neoclassical style as they began to swing the art pendulum
in the opposite direction.
One of the primary causes in the rise of Neoclassicism in the mid eighteenth century was the
expansion of what was previously called a classical education. By 1750 Italian tourism was already
a full blown industry, with guides and guidebooks circulating throughout
Europe. As a part of any young man s education, he now had to make the artistic tour of Italy,
especially Florence, Rome, and Naples. This was not just a quick visit to a couple museums;
rather, it was a lengthy, often times more than a year, and in depth study of the rich trove of art
that these cities had to offer. It was supplemented with classes and lectures at the museums and
time taken after these to sketch or paint these precious works to take home. The proliferation of
these sketches would compound and any aspiring artist was also then required to study these
works. The increased influence and awareness of Greek and Roman art in the studies of the
developing artists would soon begin to show in their designs.
One of the most significant reasons that a renewed interest in Italy has arisen was the recently
found sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
The excavation of these sites revealed massive amounts

My Vision And Plans For Personnel Psychology
With these words and emphasis, Taylor and Mosier (1948, p. 1) launched Personnel Psychology
over 60 years ago. Then, as now, Personnel Psychology was centrally concerned with the study of
people at work. As the new editorial team begins its term, I want to take this opportunity to share
my vision and plans for Personnel Psychology. To understand where we are heading, however, it is
helpful to first consider where Personnel Psychology has been. As former editor John Hollenbeck
noted when describing some of Personnel Psychology s past ground breaking research, The impact
that one has on the future seems to be closely related to one s appreciation of the past (1998, p.
819). In that spirit, we look forward by first looking back.

It is our intent as the incoming editorial team to continue P Psych s tradition of encouraging and
promoting research centered around people at work, something that has characterized the journal
from its inception (Cascio Aguinis, 2008). We are interested in publishing articles that will continue
to represent the full range of human resource management and organizational behavior topics,
including job analysis, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance appraisal

design, global and cross cultural issues, organizational climate, work attitudes and behaviors,

The Demon Lover, An Analysis Essay
In The Demon Lover, by Elizabeth Bowen, Kathleen Drover returns to London from her house
in the country in order to gather some things that she and her husband had abandoned during the
bombings of the war. It is a humid, rainy day in late August and her once familiar street is now
mostly deserted. The caretaker of her house is supposed to be out of town for a week and her
arrival is assumed unknown. Mrs. Drover enters the old musty house and discovers a letter
addressed to herself and it is marked with the present date. Curious to know if the caretaker is
back in town and a little annoyed by the letter seeming to have no urgency in being mailed to her,
she proceeds upstairs to her old bedroom to read it. In utter shock and complete... Show more

When she was nineteen she made a promise to her fianc #233;, who her mother claimed was set
on her, not in love. A couple months after he left for war he was reported missing and presumed
dead. At thirty two she met and married her current husband and had children. Now, it seems that
the demon wants his fianc #233; to keep her promise. Bowen may have chosen to give her the last
name of Drover, because a drover is someone who herds animals to market and it seems as though
her fate will meet the same demise as the demon takes her away. Mrs. Drovers internal conflict
occurred when she did not come through on the promise that she made and now, it seem she can
not even recall what the promise was. She is faced with an external conflict as well because she
will no longer have her family. She is in the hands of a demon. The third person objective point
of view forces the reader to conclude for themself what is really happening. We can not hear her
thoughts so it is impossible to know if she really remembers this so called promise. The two main
elements that really work together to make this story felt by the reader are setting and language.
The excellent use of literal imagery evokes the readers senses and sends a chilling feeling of
suspense and terror down the spine, thus, creating the perfect setting. A sense of uneasiness is

Different Types Of MRSA
MRSA stands for Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus and is a bacteria that causes
infectious open wounds on the skin. MRSA is particularly dangerous because it is resistant to most
types of antibiotics, and is easily transmittable throughout the general public. There are two types of
MRSA: HA MRSA: which is healthcare associated MRSA; and CA MRSA: which is community
associated MRSA. The signs, symptoms, and treatment are all similar between the two different
types of MRSA ( MRSA Overview, 1995). While resistant to most antibiotics, there are treatment
options, however, prevention is the most important step.
Staphylococcus aureus is a specific type of staph bacteria that causes a range of infections, such as
infection of an open ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the infected wound is mild and has not infected the internal body, antibiotics may not be needed.
The treatment will only include the wound being cut and drained. If the infection is more severe
and antibiotics are needed, there are newer types the can be used. MRSA has been shown to
respond well to drugs such as vancomycin, ceftaroline, and daptomycin. Rarely, a MRSA
infection has been shown to become resistant to vancomycin, and progresses to diseases termed
VRSA. If this happens, a combination of antibiotics will be used. The treatment plan can be
more successful if a material sample is obtained, as the culture can be tested to see which
antibiotics it will respond to. The antibiotics course needs to be completed in full, even if
symptoms disappear. If the course is not completed and the MRSA bacteria is still in the body, the
infection is come back and become resistant to the antibiotics originally used. This is how MRSA
becomes more dangerous and less susceptible to more and more antibiotics throughout time. The
prognosis of patients infected with MRSA ranges and depends on the severity of the infection. If
the infection was mild, patients almost always recover full and obtain 100% of their health back.
For infections that advance to deeper infections, for patients that were infected with H MRSA, or
for patients that have other health complications such as diabetes, the prognosis is not as positive.

Independent Travel And Flashpackers
The concepts of solo travel and independent travel are used throughout this section. Independent
traveller is a phrase to describe diverse tourists who are different from the mass, organised
tourists. They have different needs and motivations than mass tourists. It is known as fully
independent traveller (Wilson, 2004). Chai (1996) describes independent travellers as tourists
who do not travel via a fully inclusive package or in groups and the duration they stay compared
with other tourists is longer. According to Hyde and Lawson (2003) in a study entitled The
Nature of Independent Travel , three characteristics which has identified in the nature of
independent travel such as the experiences of a traveller is an itinerary, travellers are willing to
take risks in vacations and travellers possess a desire for the unplanned experiences. It can be...

Edgar Allan Poe was born near London on the 19th of January 1809. His mother was an actor
and his father was a doctor. When Poe was 2 years old his father disappeared. His mother, who
was seriously ill in tuberculosis, took Poe and his sister to Richmond, Virginia. Poe s mother died
soon after this. The two siblings became then separated and Poe was taken care of by the wealthy

Poe was fascinated by the mystical and the unknown. He was also interested in the human
subconscious and why a human being react in a certain way at a certain time. His stories are
often about dark castles and castle ruins which often have secrets buried deep down in the walls
where they have been for centuries. Most likely in a moonlit desert landscape. Magical
experiments and hypnosis play a big part in Poe s works. Many people thinks that Edgar Allan Poe
was one of the first detective story writer with the short story quot; The murders in the Rue morgue
quot;, where the detective Monsieur Dupin solves a strange homicide case where a giant monkey
is the murderer. This short story is a bit different because there is for example a three page laying
out about algae and mosses in the story.
Poe had a rhythmic and floating language in his texts and to show this, I have a couple of excerpts
from the poem quot; The Raven quot;. There are also examples of the mystical that often is found
in Poe s productions. The poem is written in four
stroke iamb.
The Raven
quot; Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore
While I nodded, nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping,
As of someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door. quot;

And each separate dying ember wrought its ghost upon the floor.

Why Women s Women Have Been Repressed For A Long Period...
Why not Women?
Women have been repressed for a long period of history. Only recently have women started to gain
respect as equals and individuals. While women s rights have advanced in many ways in the past
50 years alone, it is obvious that there is a significant disconnect in the advancement of women in
the church. The promotion of gender equality is a slow and painful process, and has barely begun
to progress worldwide. Attitudes towards women as leaders in the church, and in religion in
general, are rooted in Biblical interpretations of women s involvement, not only in leadership in the
church, but also in marriage, society, and government. The role of gender in religion is one that is
often ignored; yet the issue should be addressed in that most religions, particularly Christianity and
Catholicism, place women in submissive roles. This encourages the gender gap in society as a
whole.
Traditionally, Christianity has given men the position of authority in marriage, society, and
government. The Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, and many conservative Protestant
denominations emphasize today that only men can be ordained as priests, clergy, and as deacons.
Even though women are not seen as traditional leaders in the church, the majority of Christians
have immense respect for women. After all, God chose a woman, Mary, to have the honor of giving
birth to Jesus, the Son of God. Historically, women have played very significant roles in religion.

twentieth century the press, radio and television, the cinema and the record industry have
traditionally been grouped together under the heading mass mediaand their study developed as a
part of the sociology of mass communications (Jim, and William, 2007). At one level, this inherited
vocabulary fulfils a useful descriptive function; people know what is being referred to when such
terms as the mediaof mass communication are used. At another level, however, such terms may
prove positively misleading. It is dear, for example, that the news mediawhich are customarily
referred to in this way resemble one another only superficially. The relationships between the state
and broadcasting institutions, for example, are quite different from those which obtain between the
state and the press or, different yet again, between the state and the cinema. Similarly, the
relationship between industry and audience is quite differently articulated in the case of the record
industry as compared with the film industry (Myria, 2014). Discussion Access to knowledge is

Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest
The Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest Ken Kesey s book, One Flew
Over the Cuckoo s Nest, is a multi faceted work incorporating many thematic elements. One of the
most easily addressable themes is that of freedom and its limitations placed upon the characters in
the novel. Many types of freedoms are addressed ranging from the tangible and real to the
perceived and implied. The setting primarily takes place in a mental hospital on a locked ward
which limits the characters physical freedoms. The characters are constantly coerced and demeaned
by the antagonist Ms. Ratched which limits their mental freedoms. Beneath all is a subtext of
sexual repression which is constantly fought against by McMurphy. Individually,... Show more

Sex is used in the novel as a representation of total freedom. Its exercise is almost always
portrayed by McMurphy who, through his general demeanor and newness to the hospital, is the
most free, sexually, of any of the men. He is so free, that it has gotten him into trouble as he
only seems to be able to act on impulse. Society is not able to deal with his complete abandon
and he is eventually punished for it by having a piece of his brain removed. The rest of the men
are all repressed mostly due to some problem they ve had with the women in their lives. In fact,
it is their inability to deal with women that brought them to the hospital in the first place. Women
are portrayed throughout the book as the root of all men s problems. Nurse Ratched is the
penultimate figure of sexual repression. She does not acknowledge her femininity but hides it
successfully, but for her bosom, beneath her sterile, pressed uniform. She is cold toward the men
offering no real compassion and serves only to aggravate the men s issues with women in general.
Her power is finally stripped from her, quite literally, when McMurphy rips open her uniform
revealing her breasts, the symbol of femininity; she is a woman after all.
Limiting or removing freedom boils down to control. Those who restrict freedoms wish to exercise
control upon those whose freedoms have been infringed. In the story, the restriction of all freedoms

An Analysis Of Gus Caseley s Journey In Sudan
Throughout the journey in Sudan, Gus Caseley apparently refutes the claim that Nubia was not a
Barbarian Wasteland. After Gus and Mahmoud leave Meroe, Jebel Barkal and make their way
back on the road, they encounter hundreds of men with camels. Gus describes that the camels
have no fear, and there are many of them surround the car. Moreover, the smell of the camels is
quite irritated, and their breathing are intolerable. Gus and Mahmoud follow those men with
camels in order to understand more about their cultures. For a while, Mahmoud and Gus are
invited to join the men and take a sip of camels milk, as well as eating a crunchy sand encrusted
bread. Later on, Gus is really exhausted when he arrives at Kadugli. This destination is considered...

Analyzing The Neighborhoods Of The Future
What do you think the future will be like and what do you see? Your ideas might match up with
other people; other people have wondered what will change, and how different it will be in the
future. Neighborhoods of the future will be new, safer, improved, and a better place for all of
humanity.
A lot of things in the future will be improved, such as: Agricultural buildings, like barns and
chicken coops; commercial buildings, like gas stations, banks, warehouses; residential
buildings, like apartments, nursing homes; etc. I happen to believe that prices will be cheaper
in the future, helping poor and middle class people; as well as making everyone relieved and not
worried about running out of money. The direction of prices today are sky high; the average gas
prices of today are $2.566. If prices keep rising, then it might become harder to advertise and get
people to buy things because no one wants to buy something that s way overprised, and where will
we be then? To fix this issue, we ll decrease the prices in the future.... Show more content on

Sweatshop, By Karl Marx
Exam 2: Marx
In this short essay I will apply the concepts of exploitation, alienation and labour theory of value
from Karl Marx s theory to analyze the practice of sweatshops and the actors involved. Marx s
theory about exploitation in application to the practice of sweatshops directs us to think about the
downfalls of an capitalist system that oppresses the poor working class. Furthermore, Marx s
theory regarding the alienation of workers from nature and the product directs us to think about
the implications of a system in which mass production jobs are specialized, and its directed
impact on an individual s mental state as well as it s limitation of social mobility. Finally, Marx s
labour theory of value directs us to think about the mass ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the bigger issues of capitalism is the class conflict it creates, which is demonstrated through
the exploitative practices of the poor working class by the Bourgeoisie. The impact of capitalism is
having an effects on a global scale. In a capitalist society, wealth is not distributed equally and in the
process of aiding the rich to get richer, in both countries that outsource this work as well as in
countries that employ sweatshops, the working class are suffering. In the simplest economic terms,
the more we consume, the more demand it creates, which only increase the quotas for sweatshops.
Another issue within the formulation of sweatshops is the mass consumption of products by
individuals in western and developed countries. The products that are sold on the market are often
inexpensive to an individual that is protected by minimum wage and social regulations, which
allows for leisure time, usually spent purchasing commodities and products. However, the
individuals in these sweatshops are not provided the same protection, and often find themselves
unable to afford the products they

Oedipus Opening Statement

credited to his flawed character and his error in judgment. He s foolish for thinking he could tempt

Evidence:
On his quest for the murderer of Lauis, people are reluctant to speak, telling Oedipus the past is
better left alone. Upon speaking with Tiresias, Oedipus is warned not to pry into theses matters and

Analysis Of In The Next Room Or The Vibrator Play
The Ohio University Theater Division s production of In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play
explored the use of vibration therapy in the early 20th century as a way to cure hysteria. The
playwright Sarah Ruhl beautifully uses the intertwining lives lives of a doctor his patients and his
wife to examine female sexuality, maleincompetence, science, marriage, and love. Most of the
plot has to do with female and male patients being treated for hysteria and what outcome the
vibrator has on the lives of the characters in medical and domestic ways. This play really
highlights the personal discovery of sexuality and of women beginning to achieve marital sex that
isn t only for their husband s pleasure. This production of the vibrator play used the contrast of a
parlor and a doctor s laboratory on a rotating set to help the audienceunderstand the constant blend
of science and society in a historical setting.
The rotating set was a unique challenge for this production and while it was a bit distracting at
times it did add a lot to the quality of the production as a whole. There are many instances where
the focus should be on one of the rooms and not the other and to help achieve this very specific
blocking is implemented. For example, there is a scene in the first act where Mrs. Givings sits in
the parlor and hears Mrs. Daldry s moans for the first time as she is being treated in the laboratory.
The focus of the scene is on Mrs. Givings s reaction to the moaning and the flickering

Interlopers Essay Imagen you are pinned down by a tree. Your greatest enemy is laying face to

in mind when he wrote the short story, The Interlopers. The short story has many turns through
the whole story to get the readers on their feet and guessing what s going to happen to the men.
He has many ways of creating mysteries in a story. One technique he uses is suspense. He keeps
the reader guessing about what s going to happen to the men. Will both men die? Will one man
take over the other man s army? Will both men make it out of the forest alive? He wants you to
keep creating questions in your mind so you never really know what s going to happen next. The
two enemies stood glaring at one another for a long silent moment. Each had a rife in his hand,
each had hate in his heart and murder uppermost in his mind. (2) This makes a reader question if

New England And Chesapeake Colonies Analysis
Starting off as a single colony, the New England colony eventually expanded to form the Middle
colonies, Southern colonies, and the Chesapeake colonies. The Chesapeake and New England
colonies both stemmed from England, but developed in a way that made them each very unique
in the way that they developed. Developing around different intentions, the New England and
Chesapeake colonies were unique due to their different economic and social structures. The social
interactions that the New England and Chesapeake colonies had between Indians and their own
people were very different due to alternate motives. Documents A and H each show the steps
taken in order to achieve social unity. It is obvious that the two colonies didn t have the best
relationship with the Indians, but both colonies had different approaches when it came to mending
relationships. Bacon s Rebellion was a revolt against Governor Berkeley of Virginia in 1676 that
started due to Berkeley s resistance of not fighting against the Indians because of the fur trade. This
showed that the Chesapeake colony would rather take a better economy as opposed to stable social
interactions, Now let us compare these things together and see what sponges have sucked up the
public treasure and whether it has not been privately contrived away by unworthy favorites and
juggling parasites whose tottering fortunes have been repaired and supported at the public charge

Research Paper On Juvenile Delinquency
What is a Juvenile? A juvenile is a person who has not reached his or her 18th birthday. Juvenile
delinquency is the violation of a law of the United States committed by a person prior to reaching
18 years of age, which would have been a crime committed by an adult (office). There are many
residential programs put in place all over the country to help these youths that are coming in and out
of the Criminal Justicesystem. Once these Juveniles come out of jail, or get released on bond, they
sometimes do not have a stable place to go to and live. As these youths are leaving the jail facility
there are a wide variety of residential programs to help them get back on their feet. These residential
programs include Out of home placement in an institutional or camp like setting, or they might be
eligible for an alternative placement, such a community confinement. (programs)
Statistics shows that in 1999, nearly one in every 4 adjudicated delinquency cases resulted in
out of home placement for the juvenile. Placement cases have grown by almost 24 percent in
less than 10 years, from 124,900 in 1990 to 155,200 in 1999. However, this statistic might be a
bit old, recent statistics shows that there has been a steep decline in the number of juveniles going
into placement programs. In 2006, there were about 93,000 juveniles in residential placement, and
by 2008 there were just over 86,000 in public or private residential placement facilities. There is

Dark Comedy As A Satire
Johana Garcia
Cinema 3 Dark comedy is a subgenre of comedy and satire that has a way of making over sensitive
topics into pure hilarity. The term black comedy was created by French surrealist Andre Breton in
his book Anthology of Black Humor claiming that black humor is sympathizing with The abuser
while poking fun at the victim. Although Andre is not wrong black comedyis a difficult genre to
incorporate because it is willing to push the limit on what subjects the public can find funny. As
for the next aspect, black comedies are shrouded in the idea that we live in an absurd world
because, otherwise, the film would simply be sick or serious and certainly not comical. In the
1960s, themes which had previously been dealt with only in the most serious fashion were
suddenly subject to burlesque, or parody, thus creating black comedy. This is because Dr.

states leave it up to the individual college or university to decide to allow concealed carry, while
others outright ban it. However, Texas passed Senate Bill 11 which allowed for licensed gun

concealed campus carry. Now Georgia and Tennessee are beginning to make efforts. House Bill

Student housing, personnel meetings, and sporting events are all places where guns are banned.
Governor Nathan Deal of Georgia is even demanding that guns be banned from facilities where
high school students take specific college courses. Tennessee and Texas have not addressed the
topic of guns around dual enrollment high school students. Each state has requirements on who can
carry as well. Texas goes a step further than Georgia and Tennessee and requires those who want to
carry must undergo training from a certified instructor. No training is required for Georgia or
Tennessee, but perhaps it s something they should consider to greater ensure safety.
More and more states are pushing for campus carry and universities and colleges no longer be a

such as Moms Demand Action are criticizing legislatures who pass any gun bills, while Students
for Concealed Carry are gun advocates. Despite the fact that not everyone will agree on the topic

themselves. In her essay, Making her (In)Visible: Cultural Representations of Lesbianism and
the Lesbian Body in the 1990s, Ann Ciasullo opens with an anecdote about the Jerry Springer
show and its dramatic and damaging representation of lesbianism. Ciasullo elaborates that 1990s
television and media was saturated with images of lesbian women, but they were not always
good representations. Lesbianism was a trendy topic and lesbian characters were used as
novelties. She states, but of course, the novelty status accorded to lesbians belies their long and
difficult struggle for positive representation (577 578). The essay goes on to explore many facets
of lesbian identities, including butch and femme gender performance and ways in which
lesbian women s images are sanitized to be more acceptable in mainstream media. Because there
are no vivid sex scenes for Ruth and Idgie or Stephen and Mary in Fried Green Tomatoes and The
Well of Loneliness, respectively, some readers do find those texts to be sanitized, but for others,
these texts show these women as normal people whose entire identity isn t defined by this one
part of themselves. Idgie rescues Ruth from abuse and they work hard at the cafe and become
well known for helping the homeless people who were struck the hardest by the Great Depression.

Based on the events that lead to the devastating floods in Queensland and the eventual case that
was brought against the engineers of the dam, there have been views from both sides of the divide
as to whether or not the actions taken by the engineers were actually ethical or otherwise. We have
explored this avenue and have found that both sides of the divide have good reasons to justify their
actions. Firstly, we shall explore the avenue that the engineers decisions were appropriate and
ethical. It can be said that the engineers did employ act utilitarianism in their decisions and actions,

The engineers at the dam had no choice, and had to take the most appropriate action, which would
benefit the people living in the surrounding areas the most, based on the situation, as a result,
they had to release the water and not allow it to go beyond the 200 per cent capacity limit. If they
allowed the water capacity in the dam to go beyond the 200 percent capacity limit, that would
mean that the secondary spillway will be activated and they would not be able to control the water
flow, which would then lead to the flood levels rapidly rising. Should this occur, there is a high
chance that the loss of lives would be significantly higher, and the amount of damage would be
much worse than what had actually occurred in 2011. More so, in the event that no action was
taken at all, and the water levels began to rise at a much higher rate, until water started to spill
over the dam wall, there would have been a possibility that the dam wall would have started to
erode. With the additional pressure buildup from the water it is holding back, it would have been
possible that the dam wall could have then collapsed completely, which would possibly have
wiped out the whole city. Judging by this, the actions taken by the engineers then are ethical and
correct, as if it was not for their action to release the water, the damage that could have occurred
would have been significantly worse, and would have caused more grievous harm to the majority of

Luther The Reformer Summary
Luther the Reformer: The Story of the Man and His Career by James M. Kittelson is a biography
of the famous German monk turned theologian and reformer, Martin Luther. This is one of the
most influential men in history, and as a matter of fact, In most big libraries, books by and about
Martin Luther occupy more shelf room than those concerned with any other human being except
Jesus of Nazareth (Kittelson 9). This fame of Luther s isn t only postmortem, This extraordinary
interest in an extraordinary man reaches back almost half a millennium. Even in his own time
Luther was a media personality the first of such in three thousand years of human history
(Kittelson 9). Luther was a subject of great controversy in his own time, as well as in our, and it
has only driven his name and message into the spotlight. No matter or what one aligns himself
with, People still find themselves taking sides on the question of Luther (Kittelson 9). It is for this
reason that James M. Kittelson wrote this survey. He tells us that The primary purpose of this book
is to tell the story of Martin Lutherto readers who are not specialists in the field of Luther studies

Differences Between Greek Theatre And Theatre
Opera and theater share many similarities especially since the former is influenced by the latter.
In his text, A Short History of Opera, Donald Grout defines opera as a drama in music: a dramatic
action, exhibited on stage with scenery by actors in costume, the words conveyed entirely or for
the most part by singing, and the whole sustained and amplified by orchestral music (4). Opera
literally translates to work. The first known opera that was performed was in 1597. However,
interestingly enough, the word opera was not used until 1634 (Grout 1). The origins of seventeenth
century opera can be traced back to Greek drama and medieval theatre. Throughout the seventeenth
century, many different kinds of operas can be found from countries such as Italy, Germany, and
England. In order to fully understand opera and its inner workings, it is important to locate and
learn the origin of opera.
Greek drama is said to be the model on which the creators of modern opera at the end of the
sixteenth century based their work on (Grout 11). There are substantial differences between
Greek drama and opera. For example, in Greek theater, the cast was made up of only men and
young boys (Grout 13). Also, it is important to note that these plays were not sung entirely. Rather,
many parts were spoken out loud like the singing was left to the chorus (Grout 12). The chorus s
main function was to express opinions or give advice. They also conveyed emotions for the
audience to react to (Grout 12).

The History Of Russia
The Russian Federation is a major world power on the economic and political stage, as it is a vast
nation with valuable resources within its borders. Politically, Russia has a history of intervening in
foreign affairs and playing an active part in major world conflicts. This has caused some democratic
countries to impose sanctions on the state, resulting in an economic recession and strained political
relationships. Russiais a semi presidential federation with a communist past. Even today, the
Russian government is still elusive and hesitant to release information. The current President is
Vladimir Putin, who operates out of the capital city of Moscow (CIA). Recently, Russia has been

Russia has been involved in every major war in Europe of the 20th century, including World War
One, World War Two, the Cold War and the Russian Civil War (Rosenberg). Russia also had ties to
the Korean war, as the communist entity supported North Korea during the Cold War era. In recent
politics, Russia s ties with the United States have been complicated over the election of President
Donald Trump and Russia s alliance with the Assad Regime in Syria (Nakashima). There are also
allegations that President Trump s son met with Russian officials regarding Hillary Clinton and that
Jared Kushner proposed a secret Washington Moscow communications line for easy access to
Russian officials. The relationship between Russia and the United States has deteriorated to a level
not reached since the end of the Cold War and dissolution of the Soviet Union. Furthermore, the
threat of a nuclear attack by Russia and its ally, North Korea, are at an all time high.
In terms of economics, Russia is currently recovering from a recession. However, that does not
prevent it from being a world superpower. The Russian GDP had been sharply declining from
2014 2017, but it is still part of the exclusive G20 and G8. The recession was caused by American
sanctions, the Crimean crisis and falling oil prices. Russia has many

The Great White Shark, By Paul J. Crutzen And Eugene F....
In the early 2000s, the Anthropocene emerged as a widespread term to represent the current era of
Earth s history. According to Paul J. Crutzen and Eugene F. Stoermer, the Anthopocene represents a
geologic epoch characterized by human activities that profoundly transform the environment,
threaten ecosystems, and cause unparalleled disruptions on earth s natural processes. (Ogden et al.
2013: 341) Unfortunately, humanity in the period of the Anthropocene has contributed to a range
of environmental problems, including pollution and mass extinctions. (Ogden et al. 2013: 341) One
ancient species considerably at risk in the Anthropocene is the Great White Shark. Despite its
precarious position and its imminent eradication, the Great White Sharkmust be respected and
understood. In an attempt to reveal the intrinsic value of the oceans most important predator,
humans must shed conceptions of Great White Sharks as mindless man eating monsters and instead
conceive of them in a new light. Ultimately, a thorough exploration reveals Great Whites inherent
value independent of their worth to humans. Furthermore, it serves as an important framework for
thinking about the harmful consequences human practices have the environment. Ultimately, this
examination changes humankinds attitudes towards the Great White and dispels popular myths to
reveal that all species are fundamentally related and share a common destiny.

Derivative Financial Instruments Employed For Risk Management
Derivative Financial Instruments Employed for Risk Management
Credit Risk
Derivatives may be traded either via an exchange (exchange traded) or alternatively, privately
negotiated contracts, which are generally alluded to as Over The Counter (OTC) derivatives.
Exchange traded and OTC cleared derivative contracts have downgraded Macquarie s credit risk as
their counterparty is a clearing house, accountable for the handling of risk management for their
members to guarantee that the clearing house has sufficient resources to carry out its upcoming
obligations. Members are instructed to produce initial margins in agreement with the exchange
rules in the form of cash or securities, and further present daily variation margins in cash to cover
adjustments in values of the market. Macquarie has exchange traded derivatives with positive
replacement values as at 31 March 2016 of $1,794 million, whereas as at 31 March 2016 of $4,641
million.
For OTC derivative contracts, Macquarie commonly has master netting agreements (usually ISDA
Master Agreements) with specific counterparties to handle and control the credit risk associated.
The credit risk connected with positive replacement value contracts is condensed by master netting
arrangements that in an occurrence of default necessitates that balances with a certain counterparty
covered by the agreement (for example derivatives and cash margins) to be discontinued and settled
on a net basis. Macquarie frequently executes a Credit

Leadership Is An Integral Part Of Society Essay
Leadership is an integral part of society, without leadership there would be chaos. Leadership calls
for action in terms of guidance, decision making, structure and control, these qualities are necessary
and evident within organizations. After World War I organizations were finding it difficult to
organize and operate efficiently. It was in this period Frederick Taylor s Scientific Management
framework took precedence in organizations. Taylor introduced a systematic, strategic and scientific
method to aid organizations in recovering from the effects of the war, moving towards high levels
of productivity, efficacy and efficiency.
Taylor s principles highlighted the need for division of responsibility, a systematic and strategic way
of choosing and training employees for specific roles, breaking down jobs into smaller tasks and
extending to management the responsibility of setting objectives for the organization. Following
Taylor was French industrialist, Henri Fayol who contributed the administrative structure of
planning, coordinating, commanding, controlling and organizing. Within this defining period of
the Industrial Revolution, management theories, literature contributions, and scientific inquiry
began to advance. Various schools of thought became prominent in Europe, which trickled down to
the West. The move for an industrialized world was taking form, creating structure, rules, and
procedures to ensure continuity in these industries. Max Weber, a German sociologist

Essay Product Liability
In this age of endless lawsuits and litigation from everyone suing everyone else, one must ask the
question where does product liability end and consumer responsibility begin? This question has
been further complicated by occurrences that stretch to the most far reaching ends of this spectrum,
the spectrum ranging from strict product liability of the company to complete consumer
responsibility. On the strict product liability of the company side, we have the cigarette industry
where the CEOsof the largest cigarette companies denied that their product was liable for the cause
of addiction. Almost all consumers know that the ingredient nicotinein cigarettes is addictive, due to
extensive scientific testing and reports on this fact. What... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To understand the case of Alejandro Phillips v. Columbia Pictures, it is very important to look at
the arguments and points that can be made by both sides. First, I will examine the legal claims of
Mr. Phillips. The main argument made by Mr. Phillips was that Columbia Pictures was negligent
in how they marketed and advertised the movie Boyz N the Hood. He argued that the movie s
advertising falsely represented the movie by depicting only the main scenes of violence and leaving
out the pacifist themes at the heart of the movie. Mr. Phillips obviously believes that this false
representation is what caused the violence that lead to him being shot outside the theatre at the
showing of this movie. Now the question is whether or not Mr. Phillips s arguments have any root
in the legal realm. Can a company be held liable for leading consumers down the wrong path,
whether intentionally or not? According to the verdict reached in Denny v. Ford Motor Company,
yes, Ads and marketing materials can subject manufacturers to litigation and, ultimately, to liability
(Giliberti, p. 53). In this case, the Denny family was suing Ford because of a flipping incident
that occurred in the Denny s Bronco II while driving on normal roads. Ford argued that they were
not liable because the Bronco II is supposed to be used primarily for off road driving. In response,
the Dennys introduced a Ford marketing manual predicting that many buyers would be

Gospel Presentation
December 13, 2015
Background Information The person whom I intend to share the Gospel with is my friend Drew
Harmatz. We have been friends now for over three years and over that time grown to be really
good friends. Even though we are good friends we do not share the same beliefs. Drew is Jewish
and has chosen to stick with his birth religion because he likes the Jewish moral compass.
Basically, he has expressed that he feels the Jewish culture is more peaceful and presents a better
moral basis than that of any other religion. While we have talk of God, Christ, and the Bible; I
have never tried to relay the Gospel to him.
Elements of Communication There are a couple key points I ... Show more content on

I say this because Drew mentioned that Jewish culture is one that is morally strong and better
than that of most other religions. Well, to communicate to him the beliefs of a Christian and the
structure which we hold ourselves to would have a great impact of our conversation. David
Livermore states; Cultural intelligence doesn t mean abandoning our convictions, values, and
assumptions. Instead, we re seeking to understand and respect the beliefs and priorities of others
and express our own values and beliefs in ways that are appropriate, respectful, and effective. In
the end, relating to Drew that our moral compasses are similar is my way of breaking down the
barrier to present the Gospel in which he would feel comfortable and listen.
Cultural Value Orientations A cultural value that is important and must be taken to account is
Direct vs. Indirect. I say this because how you communicate with some will greatly affect how
much they retain of listen to. In this matter, Drew has expressed that he feels Christians are
aggressive and history has shown their moral compass lacks right vs wrong and good and bad.
Knowing this I would want to work around being direct and indirect when communicating with
him. I would never want to be to direct and push him away nor would I want to be so indirect that
it seems as if I m walking on egg shells. In the end, how I communicate to him will greatly impact
if he listens or shuts me out.

Why Was Edith Cavell Important
A nurse, spy and humanitarian who died fighting, Edith Cavell, took a stand in history by
secretly helping Allied soldiers during World War I escape from Belgium which was occupied
by Germany at the time. She hid them in a hospital and safe houses even though she knew the
Germans wouldn t stand for it. When she was discovered as a traitor to the Germans, she was
executed by a firing squad and her death was made internationally known; she lived as a symbol
for the Allied and was remembered by her calmness during the execution. World War I
started
because of the assassination of Francis Ferdinand, heir to the Austrian throne, which was done by
the Serbian Black Hand because he wanted to make the Austro Hungarian Monarchy into a Triple
Monarchy with Serbia. Austria wanted to destroy Serbia due to the... Show more content on

She risked her own life to save other lives of people that she didn t even know. It also shows that
women can take a stand, and even if they aren t in the field, they can help in other ways like
Cavell did. When her execution was shown to the world of how brutal the Germans are, Edith
was shown as a heroic figure for the Allies. She was shown as someone who was willing to do
whatever it takes to die for her country and it was hoped that her display would encourage more
men to enlist in the war (Biograph Online). As said before, she is most remembered by her
words that she uttered, Patriotism is not enough , and she wasn t trying to fight her way to get
untied from the pole or remove the blindfold that was on her, she just stood there readily, and was
shot. (Bradbury) She died not blaming anyone and said what she believed before she died, hoping
that people would listen. And they did, the memory of her later lead to many memorials, wards,
hospitals, streets, schools, parks and even a Mountain being named after her. There were also
multiple books written and a couple movies (Edith

The City Of Boynton Beach
Boynton Beach is in south Florida in Palm Beach County on the Atlantic Ocean coastline. In 2010
Boynton Beach recognized climate change issues, along with location specific vulnerabilities and
the need to adopt a mitigation and strategy plan. The city would see the impact of the rising sea
level that could affect the water supply and the storm drainage failures that the city would soon
encounter. The city of Boynton Beachtook steps to create the Boynton Beach Climate Action Plan
(CAP) that was adopted by the City Commission. Boynton Beach City Commission offers
programs to help ensure the city governance operations and community businesses take part in
making a better tomorrow. The CAP is updated every 5 years to continually assess projects
completed, projects started, and what future projects will be.
Climate Action Plan Structure and Purpose The City of Boynton Beach has adopted a combination
mitigation and adaptation strategy. The city leaders recognized its influence of urban development
on climate change and made a plan to help reduce their impact on future climate changes. The plan
is comprised of the three pillars that are necessary to achieving a sustainable future: environmental
stewardship, economic growth, and social responsibility, all of which are interdependent and
connected. ( Go Green Boynton Beach! , 2015) The CAP is an implementation plan that will reduce
greenhouse (GHG) emissions and energy consumption, while also constructing or renovating areas

Value Of Studying History Essay
What is the value, if any, of studying history?
It is often claimed that the value of studying history is that it allows us to make decisions and
predictions regarding the present and future based on the mistakes of the past. Indeed, Edmund
Burke stated as early as 1790 that In history, a great volume is unrolled for our instruction, drawing
the materials of future wisdom from the past errors and infirmities of mankind. 1 However, in this
essay I will show that this is not necessarily the case, and will argue instead that the value of
history is that it allows us to frame our present in the context of the past, and therefore better
understand ourselves as a species and as a society. To illustrate this I will be using the examples of
the 2008 financial crisis in relation to the UK housing market, and the current conflict in
Afghanistan in relation to previous wars in that country.
The UK housing market has long been renowned for being intrinsically volatile 2. As seen in the
graph below, since the early 1970s it has experienced four distinct periods of boom and bust which
are marked each time by an increase in consumer credit (blue line M4).3
This graph clearly shows that each ...bust followed an unsustainable credit induced boom. 4
Therefore I would argue that lessons from history have not been learned in this case as the cycle of
boom and bust has been repeated four times already and will most likely continue ad infinitum,
despite numerous economists5 and

This followed fastballs throws at 18.4 m from a mound at 3 different effort levels: 60%, 80%,
and full effort. Kinetic values for humeral internal rotational torque and elbow valgus load were
recorded for each throw. Repeated measures analyses of variance were used to compare all 7
throwing conditions within pitchers. Kinetic data was also compared against ball velocity to
determine throwing efficiency. A separate analysis was also conducted using a 3 level repeated
measures analysis of variances comparing just the variable effort throws from the mound. There
were significant differences in humeral IR and elbow valgus load off the mound at 60 100%. The
study showed that partial effort pitching placed lower loads on the shoulder and elbow. Flat ground
throwing had similar loads with pitching from the mound but at a significantly lower ball velocity.
The mechanical advantage of throwing from a mound or using the crow hop is likely protective
during rehabilitation and training throws. Repetitive use of the shoulder and elbow in overhead
athletes places stress and physiological limits leading to breakdown, furthermore

The Power Of Pollution
Pollution is a very big issue. It is a problem that nations across the world struggle with. The
power of pollution is caused by technology, culture, and location and geography. It s a big
problem because if we don t change something now it s only going to get worse. Pollution is
harmful to us and wildlife. It is in the air we breath, the water we drink and even the soil we use
for our crops. Pollutioncauses environmental degradation, bad human health, and Global Warming.
If something doesn t change now, it s only going to get worse. Pollution is so powerful because of
the massive effect it has on the World.
Raji Hunjan and Jethro Pettit, in Power: A Guide for Facilitating Social Change, developed a
guide to help people know how to break down power and how it s used. One section breaks down
power into divisions, including sources of power and forms of power, to help us better understand
the forces that are at work in our lives.
Technology, location and geography, and culture power have a negative effect on pollution.
Technology is becoming such a powerful resource in our society. We use technology in everyday
life. Culture also has a powerful effect on pollution, depending on where you live and the
population. Different cultures handle pollution differently, some are very serious about recycling
and some are not. Also your location can affect pollution because more populated areas will make
pollution worse. The power of technology, culture and location have an effect on pollution.
Technology is a big reason why pollution is such a big problem. The United States relies on cars,
buses, planes and many more harmful transportations to get from place to place. Not only that,
when people didn t have bulldozers or chainsaws, it was much harder to cut down trees. It would
take longer was a harder tasks, therefore our trees are being cut down at a faster rate. In the article,
Technological Advancements and Their Effects on Humanity Karehka Ramey states, ...technology
advancement has made humans so lazy, technology users are so dependent on new advance tech
tools,,...it has affected the environment because of the increase pollution which has affected the

Interviews on Human Development Through Three Generations
The research project given in psychology class was to pick a topic and interview three
generations on the subject of my choice. In this paper I will talk about the following; each person I
interviewed, their responses to the questions, the difficulties I faced, the stages of development
each generation is experiencing, relating each generation to a theory, compare the similarities and
differences each generation is experiencing in their stage of development, and what I learned from
this experience. The topic I explored for each generation was music. Music can be a emotional
experience, bring out feeling that we may be experiencing at that time, bring people together, and
memories of the past. The three generations I picked to interview was an adolescence, early
adulthood, and middle adulthood. The interview process started with the youngest age group and
ended with the eldest age of the group. I had a series of interview questions and based on the age
groups all the questions were the same for each generation. The following research questions were
asked to all three generations:
1. What kind of music did you listen to when you were younger and has your music style changed
over the years?
2. How did you buy your music and where?
3. What kind of device did you listen to your music on?
4. Does your mood determine the kind of music you listen too? Give me an example.
5. Did your parents approve of the kind of music you listened too? Why or why not?

importance of the taxi itself and the main character s point of view from within it. Bickle is a

Post Traumatic Stress Disorders In Vietnam Veterans
For those who served in Vietnam, the war left a major legacy. Due to the fact of Vietnam War
being unpopular, and unacknowledged, the veterans had to adjust to different consequences.
Vietnam veterans experienced physical, and psychological problems. Exposure to Agent Orange
was a huge issue, because of all the issues it caused. It had long term consequences, like the
increase of the risk of various types of cancer, and birth defects among the veterans children. A

Some veterans experienced feelings of depression and distrust, and that the war impacted them
negatively. PTSD is a severe emotional disorder that an individual can get after a traumatic life
event they experienced, and for the veterans it was the Vietnam War. War includes witnessing
terrible violence, the feeling of guilt of having to kill people and seeing your friends injured or
dead, and the mixed emotions in the battlefield. In 1988, the National Vietnam Veterans
Readjustment Study reported that 481,000 men and 716 women currently suffer from some
degree of PTSD as a result of their experience in war, and overall 40% of Vietnam veterans have
suffered from PTSD at some time of their life. In addition, it has been estimated that 900,000
Vietnam spouses and partners, and approximately 1,098,000 children are affected by their
respective partner s and father s combat related PTSD. These statistics showed that the Vietnam
War extremely affected the veterans , and not in a good way. PTSD could have been very
common among the veterans , because of the traumatic experiences they went through in the war.
The war was not to be treated like a game. The war was a reality for the soldiers, and they could
have constantly had the feeling of I am going to die any minute now . Another issue that they
developed was domestic violence. About one third of six hundred men were reported of physically
violating their partners. Their violent behaviour towards their partner/family could have also
linked to PTSD. Veterans who were reported to perform domestic violence were treated with
therapy to help them reduce their threatening behaviour. They either had group therapy with their
family, or individual therapy. Not only was PTSD terrible for the veterans , but it was also bad for
their children. Due to their children being raised in a home with their father having PTSD, the
disorder could have

The Human Development Index ( Hdi )
Throughout the history of civilization, poverty has remained an unfortunate characteristic of
society contributing to restrained development. This trend became a prominent characteristic
during the medieval age in Europe as the feudal system created strong autocrats who treated the
poor with scorn and disrespect, and now it is has continued into today s society (Davis). One of the
most notable locations of this trend is Haiti. With staggering poverty rates and deplorable health
standards, Haiti has the lowest development rate in the Western Hemisphere (The Haitian People).
Haiti s development is verified by its Human Development Index (HDI). Established by the United
Nations, a world organization dedicated to the development and safety of the world s countries,
an HDI is a value ranging from zero in less developed nations and one in more developed nations
that measures several statistics directly related to poverty including life expectancy at birth,
national education rates, and gross national income (2015 Human Development Report).
Although not an exact measure of poverty, the HDI functions as a simplified representation of
poverty. Currently, Haiti has a concerningly low HDI of .483, and it is not growing quickly
(Human Development Reports). If Haiti is to raise its HDI and decrease its poverty, they must
settle on a solution. Because the HDI is so closely related to poverty, and it is much more focused
and simplified, it is more logical and more efficient for Haiti to

  • 2. Cardiac Surgery With Cardiopulmonary Bypass Essay Introduction Cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is one of the most widely recognized major surgical procedures worldwide. Renal failure is a noteworthy cause of morbidity and mortality after cardiac surgery.1,2 Acute kidney injury (AKI) occurs in about 20 40% of patients3 and is associated with a mortality rate of 8% compared with 0.9% in patients without AKI. AKI requiring hemodialysis in the postoperative period is uncommon (~ 1% to 5%), yet associated with a remarkably high mortality rate of 30% to 60%.4 (11 13). AKI increases the risk for ensuing chronic kidney disease and kidney failure, with its associated morbidity and mortality.5 Clinical prediction tools have been developed to estimate the possibility of cardiac surgery associated AKI (CSA AKI).8 10 These have recognized female gender, impaired left ventricular function, insulin requiring diabetes, emergency surgery, and abnormal baseline renal function as independent predictors of requirement for dialysis.23 Pathophysiological mechanisms of CSA AKI include decreased renal perfusion, lack of pulsatile flow, oxidative stress, hypothermia, atheroembolism, and inflammation 23. The main mechanism of injury is thought to be intraoperative ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI).20 Prolonged duration of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and its inflammatory response, and prolonged aortic cross clamping are the leading factors associated with an increased likelihood of cardiac ischemia reperfusion injury.22 Although ... • 6. Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment Essay Neoclassicism and the Enlightenment The Enlightenment was a time of great innovation and evolution. One of the most significant movements which owes at least the majority of its beginnings to the Enlightenment is the architectural and artistic movement of Neoclassicism. This Neoclassicism of the mid eighteenth to mid nineteenth centuries is one that valued ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan artistic ideals. These ideals, including order, symmetry, and balance, were considered by many European generations to be the highest point of artistic excellence. Although many movements in European art were largely devoid of classical characteristics, they were always looked to as sources of inspiration and were revived as significant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The pettiness of these movements had created a backlash and these thinkers and art critics welcomed the harsher and more ordered Neoclassical style as they began to swing the art pendulum in the opposite direction. One of the primary causes in the rise of Neoclassicism in the mid eighteenth century was the expansion of what was previously called a classical education. By 1750 Italian tourism was already a full blown industry, with guides and guidebooks circulating throughout Europe. As a part of any young man s education, he now had to make the artistic tour of Italy, especially Florence, Rome, and Naples. This was not just a quick visit to a couple museums; rather, it was a lengthy, often times more than a year, and in depth study of the rich trove of art that these cities had to offer. It was supplemented with classes and lectures at the museums and time taken after these to sketch or paint these precious works to take home. The proliferation of these sketches would compound and any aspiring artist was also then required to study these works. The increased influence and awareness of Greek and Roman art in the studies of the developing artists would soon begin to show in their designs. One of the most significant reasons that a renewed interest in Italy has arisen was the recently found sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The excavation of these sites revealed massive amounts ... Then, as now, Personnel Psychology was centrally concerned with the study of people at work. As the new editorial team begins its term, I want to take this opportunity to share my vision and plans for Personnel Psychology. To understand where we are heading, however, it is helpful to first consider where Personnel Psychology has been. As former editor John Hollenbeck noted when describing some of Personnel Psychology s past ground breaking research, The impact that one has on the future seems to be closely related to one s appreciation of the past (1998, p. 819). In that spirit, we look forward by first looking back. From its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We are interested in publishing articles that will continue to represent the full range of human resource management and organizational behavior topics, including job analysis, recruitment and selection, training and development, performance appraisal and feedback, compensation and rewards, careers, strategic human resource management, work design, global and cross cultural issues, organizational climate, work attitudes and behaviors, motivation, teams, and leadership. • 8. The Demon Lover, An Analysis Essay In The Demon Lover, by Elizabeth Bowen, Kathleen Drover returns to London from her house in the country in order to gather some things that she and her husband had abandoned during the bombings of the war. It is a humid, rainy day in late August and her once familiar street is now mostly deserted. The caretaker of her house is supposed to be out of town for a week and her arrival is assumed unknown. Mrs. Drover enters the old musty house and discovers a letter addressed to herself and it is marked with the present date. Curious to know if the caretaker is back in town and a little annoyed by the letter seeming to have no urgency in being mailed to her, she proceeds upstairs to her old bedroom to read it. In utter shock and complete... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When she was nineteen she made a promise to her fianc #233;, who her mother claimed was set on her, not in love. A couple months after he left for war he was reported missing and presumed dead. At thirty two she met and married her current husband and had children. Now, it seems that the demon wants his fianc #233; to keep her promise. Bowen may have chosen to give her the last name of Drover, because a drover is someone who herds animals to market and it seems as though her fate will meet the same demise as the demon takes her away. Mrs. Drovers internal conflict occurred when she did not come through on the promise that she made and now, it seem she can not even recall what the promise was. She is faced with an external conflict as well because she will no longer have her family. She is in the hands of a demon. The third person objective point of view forces the reader to conclude for themself what is really happening. We can not hear her thoughts so it is impossible to know if she really remembers this so called promise. The two main elements that really work together to make this story felt by the reader are setting and language. The excellent use of literal imagery evokes the readers senses and sends a chilling feeling of suspense and terror down the spine, thus, creating the perfect setting. MRSA is particularly dangerous because it is resistant to most types of antibiotics, and is easily transmittable throughout the general public. There are two types of MRSA: HA MRSA: which is healthcare associated MRSA; and CA MRSA: which is community associated MRSA. The signs, symptoms, and treatment are all similar between the two different types of MRSA ( MRSA Overview, 1995). If the infected wound is mild and has not infected the internal body, antibiotics may not be needed. The treatment will only include the wound being cut and drained. If the infection is more severe and antibiotics are needed, there are newer types the can be used. MRSA has been shown to respond well to drugs such as vancomycin, ceftaroline, and daptomycin. Rarely, a MRSA infection has been shown to become resistant to vancomycin, and progresses to diseases termed VRSA. If this happens, a combination of antibiotics will be used. The treatment plan can be more successful if a material sample is obtained, as the culture can be tested to see which antibiotics it will respond to. The antibiotics course needs to be completed in full, even if symptoms disappear. If the course is not completed and the MRSA bacteria is still in the body, the infection is come back and become resistant to the antibiotics originally used. This is how MRSA becomes more dangerous and less susceptible to more and more antibiotics throughout time. The prognosis of patients infected with MRSA ranges and depends on the severity of the infection. If the infection was mild, patients almost always recover full and obtain 100% of their health back. For infections that advance to deeper infections, for patients that were infected with H MRSA, or for patients that have other health complications such as diabetes, the prognosis is not as positive. Independent traveller is a phrase to describe diverse tourists who are different from the mass, organised tourists. They have different needs and motivations than mass tourists. • 14. Why Women s Women Have Been Repressed For A Long Period... Why not Women? Women have been repressed for a long period of history. Only recently have women started to gain respect as equals and individuals. While women s rights have advanced in many ways in the past 50 years alone, it is obvious that there is a significant disconnect in the advancement of women in the church. The promotion of gender equality is a slow and painful process, and has barely begun to progress worldwide. Attitudes towards women as leaders in the church, and in religion in general, are rooted in Biblical interpretations of women s involvement, not only in leadership in the church, but also in marriage, society, and government. The role of gender in religion is one that is often ignored; yet the issue should be addressed in that most religions, particularly Christianity and Catholicism, place women in submissive roles. This encourages the gender gap in society as a whole. Traditionally, Christianity has given men the position of authority in marriage, society, and government. The Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, and many conservative Protestant denominations emphasize today that only men can be ordained as priests, clergy, and as deacons. Even though women are not seen as traditional leaders in the church, the majority of Christians have immense respect for women. After all, God chose a woman, Mary, to have the honor of giving birth to Jesus, the Son of God. Historically, women have played very significant roles in religion. Nuns, specifically, ... The Media Of A Third Estate Current news media can no longer be considered to occupy the position of a fourth estate [Writer Name] [Institute Name] Current news media can no longer be considered to occupy the position of a fourth estate Introduction The new media distinctively associated with the nineteenth and twentieth century the press, radio and television, the cinema and the record industry have traditionally been grouped together under the heading mass mediaand their study developed as a part of the sociology of mass communications (Jim, and William, 2007). At one level, this inherited vocabulary fulfils a useful descriptive function; people know what is being referred to when such terms as the mediaof mass communication are used. At another level, however, such terms may prove positively misleading. It is dear, for example, that the news mediawhich are customarily referred to in this way resemble one another only superficially. The relationships between the state and broadcasting institutions, for example, are quite different from those which obtain between the state and the press or, different yet again, between the state and the cinema. Similarly, the relationship between industry and audience is quite differently articulated in the case of the record industry as compared with the film industry (Myria, 2014). Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew over the Cuckoo s Nest The Subjugation of Freedom in One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest Ken Kesey s book, One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest, is a multi faceted work incorporating many thematic elements. One of the most easily addressable themes is that of freedom and its limitations placed upon the characters in the novel. Many types of freedoms are addressed ranging from the tangible and real to the perceived and implied. The setting primarily takes place in a mental hospital on a locked ward which limits the characters physical freedoms. The characters are constantly coerced and demeaned by the antagonist Ms. Ratched which limits their mental freedoms. Sex is used in the novel as a representation of total freedom. Its exercise is almost always portrayed by McMurphy who, through his general demeanor and newness to the hospital, is the most free, sexually, of any of the men. He is so free, that it has gotten him into trouble as he only seems to be able to act on impulse. Society is not able to deal with his complete abandon and he is eventually punished for it by having a piece of his brain removed. The rest of the men are all repressed mostly due to some problem they ve had with the women in their lives. In fact, it is their inability to deal with women that brought them to the hospital in the first place. Women are portrayed throughout the book as the root of all men s problems. Nurse Ratched is the penultimate figure of sexual repression. She does not acknowledge her femininity but hides it successfully, but for her bosom, beneath her sterile, pressed uniform. She is cold toward the men offering no real compassion and serves only to aggravate the men s issues with women in general. Her power is finally stripped from her, quite literally, when McMurphy rips open her uniform revealing her breasts, the symbol of femininity; she is a woman after all. Limiting or removing freedom boils down to control. Those who restrict freedoms wish to exercise control upon those whose freedoms have been infringed. Marx s theory about exploitation in application to the practice of sweatshops directs us to think about the downfalls of an capitalist system that oppresses the poor working class. Furthermore, Marx s theory regarding the alienation of workers from nature and the product directs us to think about the implications of a system in which mass production jobs are specialized, and its directed impact on an individual s mental state as well as it s limitation of social mobility. • 25. Analysis Of In The Next Room Or The Vibrator Play The Ohio University Theater Division s production of In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play explored the use of vibration therapy in the early 20th century as a way to cure hysteria. The playwright Sarah Ruhl beautifully uses the intertwining lives lives of a doctor his patients and his wife to examine female sexuality, maleincompetence, science, marriage, and love. Most of the plot has to do with female and male patients being treated for hysteria and what outcome the vibrator has on the lives of the characters in medical and domestic ways. This play really highlights the personal discovery of sexuality and of women beginning to achieve marital sex that isn t only for their husband s pleasure. This production of the vibrator play used the contrast of a parlor and a doctor s laboratory on a rotating set to help the audienceunderstand the constant blend of science and society in a historical setting. The rotating set was a unique challenge for this production and while it was a bit distracting at times it did add a lot to the quality of the production as a whole. There are many instances where the focus should be on one of the rooms and not the other and to help achieve this very specific blocking is implemented. For example, there is a scene in the first act where Mrs. Givings sits in the parlor and hears Mrs. Daldry s moans for the first time as she is being treated in the laboratory. • 31. Dark Comedy As A Satire Johana Garcia Cinema 3 Dark comedy is a subgenre of comedy and satire that has a way of making over sensitive topics into pure hilarity. The term black comedy was created by French surrealist Andre Breton in his book Anthology of Black Humor claiming that black humor is sympathizing with The abuser while poking fun at the victim. Although Andre is not wrong black comedyis a difficult genre to incorporate because it is willing to push the limit on what subjects the public can find funny. As for the next aspect, black comedies are shrouded in the idea that we live in an absurd world because, otherwise, the film would simply be sick or serious and certainly not comical. In the 1960s, themes which had previously been dealt with only in the most serious fashion were suddenly subject to burlesque, or parody, thus creating black comedy. This is because Dr. Strangelove (1964)(Strangelove s comedy heavily release one the actors saying very ridiculous things in very ... In her essay, Making her (In)Visible: Cultural Representations of Lesbianism and the Lesbian Body in the 1990s, Ann Ciasullo opens with an anecdote about the Jerry Springer show and its dramatic and damaging representation of lesbianism. Ciasullo elaborates that 1990s television and media was saturated with images of lesbian women, but they were not always good representations. Lesbianism was a trendy topic and lesbian characters were used as novelties. She states, but of course, the novelty status accorded to lesbians belies their long and difficult struggle for positive representation (577 578). The essay goes on to explore many facets of lesbian identities, including butch and femme gender performance and ways in which lesbian women s images are sanitized to be more acceptable in mainstream media. Because there are no vivid sex scenes for Ruth and Idgie or Stephen and Mary in Fried Green Tomatoes and The Well of Loneliness, respectively, some readers do find those texts to be sanitized, but for others, these texts show these women as normal people whose entire identity isn t defined by this one part of themselves. We have explored this avenue and have found that both sides of the divide have good reasons to justify their actions. The engineers at the dam had no choice, and had to take the most appropriate action, which would benefit the people living in the surrounding areas the most, based on the situation, as a result, they had to release the water and not allow it to go beyond the 200 per cent capacity limit. If they allowed the water capacity in the dam to go beyond the 200 percent capacity limit, that would mean that the secondary spillway will be activated and they would not be able to control the water flow, which would then lead to the flood levels rapidly rising. Should this occur, there is a high chance that the loss of lives would be significantly higher, and the amount of damage would be much worse than what had actually occurred in 2011. More so, in the event that no action was taken at all, and the water levels began to rise at a much higher rate, until water started to spill over the dam wall, there would have been a possibility that the dam wall would have started to erode. With the additional pressure buildup from the water it is holding back, it would have been possible that the dam wall could have then collapsed completely, which would possibly have wiped out the whole city. Judging by this, the actions taken by the engineers then are ethical and correct, as if it was not for their action to release the water, the damage that could have occurred would have been significantly worse, and would have caused more grievous harm to the majority of the population of ... • 40. Differences Between Greek Theatre And Theatre Opera and theater share many similarities especially since the former is influenced by the latter. In his text, A Short History of Opera, Donald Grout defines opera as a drama in music: a dramatic action, exhibited on stage with scenery by actors in costume, the words conveyed entirely or for the most part by singing, and the whole sustained and amplified by orchestral music (4). Opera literally translates to work. The first known opera that was performed was in 1597. However, interestingly enough, the word opera was not used until 1634 (Grout 1). The origins of seventeenth century opera can be traced back to Greek drama and medieval theatre. Throughout the seventeenth century, many different kinds of operas can be found from countries such as Italy, Germany, and England. In order to fully understand opera and its inner workings, it is important to locate and learn the origin of opera. Greek drama is said to be the model on which the creators of modern opera at the end of the sixteenth century based their work on (Grout 11). There are substantial differences between Greek drama and opera. For example, in Greek theater, the cast was made up of only men and young boys (Grout 13). Also, it is important to note that these plays were not sung entirely. Rather, many parts were spoken out loud like the singing was left to the chorus (Grout 12). The chorus s main function was to express opinions or give advice. They also conveyed emotions for the audience to react to (Grout 12). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He argued that the movie s advertising falsely represented the movie by depicting only the main scenes of violence and leaving out the pacifist themes at the heart of the movie. Mr. Phillips obviously believes that this false representation is what caused the violence that lead to him being shot outside the theatre at the showing of this movie. • 49. Value Of Studying History Essay What is the value, if any, of studying history? It is often claimed that the value of studying history is that it allows us to make decisions and predictions regarding the present and future based on the mistakes of the past. Indeed, Edmund Burke stated as early as 1790 that In history, a great volume is unrolled for our instruction, drawing the materials of future wisdom from the past errors and infirmities of mankind. 1 However, in this essay I will show that this is not necessarily the case, and will argue instead that the value of history is that it allows us to frame our present in the context of the past, and therefore better understand ourselves as a species and as a society. To illustrate this I will be using the examples of the 2008 financial crisis in relation to the UK housing market, and the current conflict in Afghanistan in relation to previous wars in that country. The UK housing market has long been renowned for being intrinsically volatile 2. As seen in the graph below, since the early 1970s it has experienced four distinct periods of boom and bust which are marked each time by an increase in consumer credit (blue line M4).3 This graph clearly shows that each ...bust followed an unsustainable credit induced boom. 4 Therefore I would argue that lessons from history have not been learned in this case as the cycle of boom and bust has been repeated four times already and will most likely continue ad infinitum, despite numerous economists5 and ... • 50. Kinetic Technique The American Journal of sports med conducted entitled, Deficiencies in pitching biomechanics in baseball players with a history of superior labrum anterior posterior repair. The purpose of this study was to determine if a group of baseball pitchers with previous Superior labrum anterior to posterior (SLAP) shoulder repairs would display decreased range of motion, specifically, shoulder external rotation and horizontal abduction, as compared to a non surgical athletes during pitching. A controlled laboratory study was performed and included a group of 13 collegiate and professional pitchers with history of slap tear and a controlled group of 52 pitchers without surgical history. Groups were paired with those of matching age, height, weight and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This followed fastballs throws at 18.4 m from a mound at 3 different effort levels: 60%, 80%, and full effort. Kinetic values for humeral internal rotational torque and elbow valgus load were recorded for each throw. Repeated measures analyses of variance were used to compare all 7 throwing conditions within pitchers. Kinetic data was also compared against ball velocity to determine throwing efficiency. A separate analysis was also conducted using a 3 level repeated measures analysis of variances comparing just the variable effort throws from the mound. There were significant differences in humeral IR and elbow valgus load off the mound at 60 100%. The study showed that partial effort pitching placed lower loads on the shoulder and elbow. Flat ground throwing had similar loads with pitching from the mound but at a significantly lower ball velocity. The mechanical advantage of throwing from a mound or using the crow hop is likely protective during rehabilitation and training throws. Repetitive use of the shoulder and elbow in overhead athletes places stress and physiological limits leading to breakdown, furthermore ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 51. The Power Of Pollution Pollution is a very big issue. It is a problem that nations across the world struggle with. The power of pollution is caused by technology, culture, and location and geography. It s a big problem because if we don t change something now it s only going to get worse. Pollution is harmful to us and wildlife. It is in the air we breath, the water we drink and even the soil we use for our crops. Pollutioncauses environmental degradation, bad human health, and Global Warming. If something doesn t change now, it s only going to get worse. Pollution is so powerful because of the massive effect it has on the World. Raji Hunjan and Jethro Pettit, in Power: A Guide for Facilitating Social Change, developed a guide to help people know how to break down power and how it s used. One section breaks down power into divisions, including sources of power and forms of power, to help us better understand the forces that are at work in our lives. Technology, location and geography, and culture power have a negative effect on pollution. Technology is becoming such a powerful resource in our society. We use technology in everyday life. Culture also has a powerful effect on pollution, depending on where you live and the population. Different cultures handle pollution differently, some are very serious about recycling and some are not. Also your location can affect pollution because more populated areas will make pollution worse. The power of technology, culture and location have an effect on pollution. Technology is a big reason why pollution is such a big problem. The United States relies on cars, buses, planes and many more harmful transportations to get from place to place. Not only that, when people didn t have bulldozers or chainsaws, it was much harder to cut down trees. It would take longer was a harder tasks, therefore our trees are being cut down at a faster rate. In the article, Technological Advancements and Their Effects on Humanity Karehka Ramey states, ...technology advancement has made humans so lazy, technology users are so dependent on new advance tech tools,,...it has affected the environment because of the increase pollution which has affected the Ozone layers which has resulted into global warming ... • 52. Interviews on Human Development Through Three Generations The research project given in psychology class was to pick a topic and interview three generations on the subject of my choice. In this paper I will talk about the following; each person I interviewed, their responses to the questions, the difficulties I faced, the stages of development each generation is experiencing, relating each generation to a theory, compare the similarities and differences each generation is experiencing in their stage of development, and what I learned from this experience. The topic I explored for each generation was music. Music can be a emotional experience, bring out feeling that we may be experiencing at that time, bring people together, and memories of the past. The three generations I picked to interview was an adolescence, early adulthood, and middle adulthood. The interview process started with the youngest age group and ended with the eldest age of the group. I had a series of interview questions and based on the age groups all the questions were the same for each generation. The following research questions were asked to all three generations: 1. What kind of music did you listen to when you were younger and has your music style changed over the years? 2. How did you buy your music and where? 3. What kind of device did you listen to your music on? 4. Does your mood determine the kind of music you listen too? Give me an example. 5. Did your parents approve of the kind of music you listened too? Why or why not? 6. How has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Taxi Driver Film Analysis Taxi Driver: The Filth of the Streets and of Self The opening shot is Robert DeNiro s character, Travis Bickle s eyes in the review mirror intensely gazing at the city. It then transitions to the view outside of the taxi to the colorful, hectic streets of New York City. This exaggerates the importance of the taxi itself and the main character s point of view from within it. Bickle is a veteran Marine who can t sleep and decides to take the job of driving the long hours. He narrates the film as well using dialogue from the journal that he keeps. Through the imagery and symbolism of the taxi itself, the musical backdrop, and the artistic editing, Martin Scorcese s American psychological thriller captures the filth and futility and filth of... • 54. Post Traumatic Stress Disorders In Vietnam Veterans For those who served in Vietnam, the war left a major legacy. Due to the fact of Vietnam War being unpopular, and unacknowledged, the veterans had to adjust to different consequences. Vietnam veterans experienced physical, and psychological problems. Exposure to Agent Orange was a huge issue, because of all the issues it caused. It had long term consequences, like the increase of the risk of various types of cancer, and birth defects among the veterans children. A negative legacy the war left on Vietnam veterans has been the health effects of Agent Orange and other herbicides used in Vietnam. The exposure to the different kinds of chemicals caused them, and their family to develop illnesses, and birth defects for their children. Of the veterans ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some veterans experienced feelings of depression and distrust, and that the war impacted them negatively. PTSD is a severe emotional disorder that an individual can get after a traumatic life event they experienced, and for the veterans it was the Vietnam War. War includes witnessing terrible violence, the feeling of guilt of having to kill people and seeing your friends injured or dead, and the mixed emotions in the battlefield. In 1988, the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study reported that 481,000 men and 716 women currently suffer from some degree of PTSD as a result of their experience in war, and overall 40% of Vietnam veterans have suffered from PTSD at some time of their life. In addition, it has been estimated that 900,000 Vietnam spouses and partners, and approximately 1,098,000 children are affected by their respective partner s and father s combat related PTSD. These statistics showed that the Vietnam War extremely affected the veterans , and not in a good way. PTSD could have been very common among the veterans , because of the traumatic experiences they went through in the war. The war was not to be treated like a game. The war was a reality for the soldiers, and they could have constantly had the feeling of I am going to die any minute now . Another issue that they developed was domestic violence. About one third of six hundred men were reported of physically violating their partners. Their violent behaviour towards their partner/family could have also linked to PTSD. Veterans who were reported to perform domestic violence were treated with therapy to help them reduce their threatening behaviour. They either had group therapy with their family, or individual therapy. Not only was PTSD terrible for the veterans , but it was also bad for their children. Due to their children being raised in a home with their father having PTSD, the disorder could have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 55. The Human Development Index ( Hdi ) Throughout the history of civilization, poverty has remained an unfortunate characteristic of society contributing to restrained development. This trend became a prominent characteristic during the medieval age in Europe as the feudal system created strong autocrats who treated the poor with scorn and disrespect, and now it is has continued into today s society (Davis). One of the most notable locations of this trend is Haiti. With staggering poverty rates and deplorable health standards, Haiti has the lowest development rate in the Western Hemisphere (The Haitian People). Haiti s development is verified by its Human Development Index (HDI). Established by the United Nations, a world organization dedicated to the development and safety of the world s countries, an HDI is a value ranging from zero in less developed nations and one in more developed nations that measures several statistics directly related to poverty including life expectancy at birth, national education rates, and gross national income (2015 Human Development Report). Although not an exact measure of poverty, the HDI functions as a simplified representation of poverty. Currently, Haiti has a concerningly low HDI of .483, and it is not growing quickly (Human Development Reports). If Haiti is to raise its HDI and decrease its poverty, they must settle on a solution. Because the HDI is so closely related to poverty, and it is much more focused and simplified, it is more logical and more efficient for Haiti to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
