2. Colosseum of Rome Essay
In this essay, I will be writing about the great Colosseum of Rome and what was held inside to give
the citizens of Rome some entertainment. The Romans had many choices of what to do during
their spare time, such as ball games, board games, and watching gladiatorial fights in the
Colosseum; this was the most popular type of entertainment. To many people today, Roman
entertainment was classed as cruel. However, not all forms of entertainment involved such violence
as within the Colosseum. There was also poetry reading available, although most people enjoyed the
fights. The Colosseum was like our football stadiums, to provide entertainment for the citizens.
However, their idea of entertainment was very different to our idea of... Show more content on

This is why Vespasianknocked down Nero s Golden House and the Colossus of Nero (an enormous
bronze statue of himself) and exchanged the gold for money to build the Colosseum. He used
half of the land where Nero s house was, to create a public park for the people of Rome to use and
enjoy. He also built the Colosseum where the statue was, it was named after the Colossus,
meaning gold. The Colosseum was a large centre for entertainment. It was made out of marble and
limestone and it took ten years to build as it was the largest building of its kind. It was the first
free standing amphitheatre to be built without using natural hillsides to create seating. Vespasian
made sure it could seat 50,000 people, so the majority of citizens could come and get entertained.
There were 76 entrances in various places around the Colosseum which enabled everyone easy
access in and out; the entire audience could exit the building in five minutes in the case of an
emergency.
The Colosseum could accommodate all classes of people wishing to visit the Colosseum.
Entrance to the Colosseum was free, but each person had to have a special piece of paper similar
to a ticket which had their seat number, tier number and sector number, like we do now in modern
times. This enabled each and every person to use the correct entrance, meaning they had easy access
in and out of the Amphitheatre. The seats in the

3. Dred Scott V Sandford
Rap music is a reflection of Black culture that for decades has been used to highlight social
injustices. There are many similarities to the Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), which help to
underline the historical pain the Blacks had to endure both in the past and present. The case of
Dred Scott v. Sandford was based on the establishment of racism and political movement on
enslavement. Chang, Jeff Can t Stop Won t Stop explains the events of (1960 1973) social
condition prevailing in New York, especially the South Bronx, in the generation leading up to the
birth of hip hop.
The impact of the Dred Scott v. Sandford lasted from (1833 1857). Dred Scott was originally from
Virginia but resided in both Illinois and Missouri for most of his life. One of the reasons he
resided in Illinois, was because it was known as a free state. In 1846, Dred Scott entered the state of
Missouri and sued for his freedom in the Missouri Courts; unfortunately it was an unsuccessful
attempt. Throughout his life, he continued to challenge the Courts for his freedom, ultimately
obtaining freedom in 1857. Dred Scott becoming a free black was the beginning of an American
history revolution.
Enslavement existed for at least 400 years and some might say that it still exist today but presents
itself differently. It has a huge impact on African Americans because living in an anti black world
has an effect on a person s psyche. In addition, African Americans depended on religious songs that

4. The Effect of the Modernization of China on Chinese Music...
The modernization of China has played a key role in the changes of popular culture in China. With
modernization, the people of China were introduced to different forms and styles of music which
the Chinese studied and incorporated into their own music. They felt that the Westernization of
their music would make it more modern. With the rise of popular musiccame a means of
identification, and with that, regulations to control its effect on society as a whole. And finally, the
blurring of boundaries between China and the rest of the world show the ever changing nature of
the music in China. Throughout China s modernization, as the country opened up to the West, the
Chinese music scene slowly changed in terms of style, production,... Show more content on

He Luting later came to be one of the most influential twentieth century Chinese composers and
music educators (Lau 97).
The adoption of Western music inspired new ways of viewing music and resulted in a
transformation of Chinese music. It prompted Chinese composers to either fuse Western music with
traditional sounds or turn their back on traditional Chinese music [because they Westernized] their
music modeled on the perceptions that Western music equates with modernization (Lau 90).
Additionally, because many traditionalists feared that traditional Chinese music would gradually
disappear due to the modernizing Western music, they began to focus on promoting Chinese music
as a way to counteract the encroachment of Western culture and music. But they did it in a
modernist rather than preservationist sort of way. Many musicians experimented with new ways of
composing music and modernizing traditional instruments (Lau 92).
Scholars consider Mandarin popular songs as the first kind of modern popular music developed in
China (Lau 106). These Mandarin pop songs were developed in Shanghai in the 1920s. In
Shanghai, the trendy Chinese in Shanghai mimicked the lifestyle of the city s foreigners, engaging

5. Essay on The Continuing Mystery of SIDS
The Continuing Mystery of SIDS
Sudden infant death syndrome ( SIDS) is the greatest cause of infant deaths ranging from ages one
month to one year. Most of these deaths occur before the age of six months. Normally, any
unexplainable infant death is considered to be due to SIDS. Numerous attempts have been made to
discover the exact cause of this syndrome. However, the only known pathology is that SIDS is due
to a dysfunction or abnormality in the cardiac and/or respiratory systems. To this point, an exact
and definite cause has not been named. This paper will attempt to present several of the proposed
and hypothesized causes of SIDS.
First of all, it is necessary to understand some of the important features of this syndrome (Naeye, ...

Possible post mortem characteristics of SIDS victims have been found to be normal in comparison
with post mortem non SIDS infants of the same age. Furthermore, no abnormalities in the growth
and morphology of the lungs and hearts of SIDS infants have been found. Therefore, in more recent
years, research has shifted from the actual death and autopsy findings to chronic abnormalities
found within these infants prior to death.
The list of proposed chronic abnormalities is lengthy. To this date, research has confirmed the
following: 1) SIDS is due to a dysfunction of the cardiac and/or respiratory systems, and 2) the
death of the infant is due to hypo ventilation of the lungs and periods of complete cessation of
breathing or apnea. Hypo ventilation and apnea cause hypo perfusion of the tissues with necessary
oxygen. Ischemia of tissues results and eventually causes death. Research now centers around
discovering the cause of infant hypo ventilation and apnea.
Hypothesized causes of SIDS generally have fallen into three basic categories:
1) causes related to the respiratory system; 2) causes related to the cardiac and circulatory system;
and 3) causes related to levels of various circulating substances (enzymes, neurotransmitters, viruses)
within the body
First of all, most SIDS research has been focused upon the neuronal control of the respiratory
system. As mentioned previously, the post mortem lungs of SIDS victims showed no evidence of

Everyone was created for a reason. Don t ever allow yourself to feel trapped by your choices.
Take a look at yourself. You are a unique person created for a specific purpose. Your gifts matter.
Your story matters. Your dreams matter. You matter. Real Michael Oher. In the visual text The
Blind Side the director John Lee Hancock presented to us, how Michael Oher was a positive
influence on Sean Tuohy, the football team/coach and Leigh Anne. To display this to the viewers,
Hancock used the film technique of low key lighting in the scene where Michael was sauntering
solo in the crisp, drenched night, long shot in the scene where Michael was on the field with his
football team/coach and dialogue in the scene where Michael graduates to Ole Miss University. Do
you believe a young teenage boy can transform someone to become a better person? Well, start
believing! Hancock used these film techniques to reinforce the way Michael was a positive

way, but they influenced him as well and changed him for the better. I m concerned about the fact
that our society is not improving instead it is becoming much worse with all the stereotyping that is

from putting others down. A million people did not believe in Michael at the start, but I am certain

8. Portrait Of America Chapter 1 Summary
The textbook, Portrait of America: Volume 2, 10th Edition, organized by co authors, Stephen B.
Oates and Charles J. Errico, is supplied with various historical topics written by different, credible
authors. The textbook is, indeed, worth the time to read and understand. The authors express
historical people and events many people have heard of, and expands the reader s mind with
personal stories and unconventional facts, one has not heard of. Most textbooks offer concise
information about a person or event; Portrait of America authors take an unorthodox approach by
stating information as well as revealing their own perspective on the topic. Such a technique as this
is unfamiliar to the average student. Though an unconventional method, the authors are most
effective at distributing information to the reader. Topics covered such as presidents, women, and
events that changed America hold significance to the theory, Portrait of America authors take an
idiosyncratic yet superb approach to delivering information to the reader. In Portrait of America
chapter 9, Theodore Roosevelt, President, British American author Edmund Morris begins the
chapter in a strange and unfamiliar way; stating Theodore Roosevelt s faults. A successful attempt
at humor to captivate the attention of the reader, claiming Roosevelt made rude faces while passing
boys on the streets of Washington (94). Morris s introduction to chapter 9 is unlike what many
students are used to. Chapter 21, Harry Truman:

9. The Importance Of Anonymous Sources In Journalism
Anonymous sources in Journalism
Journalism scholars, critics, and the public continue to debate the wisdom of using unnamed
sourcing in news reports. Proponents argue that granting sources anonymity is necessary to ensure
the free flow of information that otherwise would go unreported. Critics of the practice charge that
journalists too readily grant anonymity and thus risk undermining media credibility. (Duffy).
Anonymous sourcing is defined as the use of information from someone who is not willing to put
their name behind whatever they are saying. This type of sourcing has always been incredibly
controversial for obvious reasons. Many argue that anonymous sourcing is unethical and
unbelievable, while others think that information must be legit if sources are skeptical about
admitting to it.
Anonymous sources are one of the sexiest things in journalism. The idea conjures images of late
night meetings in parking garages, voice modulators and Watergate era intrigue. The fact that
someone feels the need to be protected makes their information feel more valuable, (Dobbs).
There are many reasons why sources choose to keep their identity private, a few of these include
the fear of losing employment, and as a security clearance from the public when giving out
information that might be controversial at the time being.
A flurry of inaccurate stories about O.J. Simpson based on unnamed sources has rekindled the
debate over their use. Detractors say they hurt the media s

10. The Negative Impacts Of Violent Video Games
The negative impacts that are associated with violent gaming are a growing list. These many
negative effects could build up into a more serious situation, with all of the possible outcomes of
these side effects mixing together it could quite possibly take a turn for the worse. The use of
violent video games could cause players to participate in criminal violence, because of the increased
levels of aggressionand rage. NBC News reported of a gory incident in January of 2013, which
involved Nehemiah Griego and his murderous actions toward his parents and three of his
siblings in his home. The fifteen year old boy killed his family because he had been angry with
his mother in the days before the murders. When questioned about his family, the boy was
emotionless, but immediately after the investigators asked what his interests were, his face lit
up and he immediately began reminiscing about his favorite video games, Call of Duty: Modern
Warfare, and Grand Theft Auto (2013). Common sense media explains the game, Call of Duty:
Modern Warfare 3, with a vivid description; a bloody military shooting game with disturbing
cinematic moments (n.d.). Could Griego s avid gaming schedule, and love for the bloody first
person shooting game be slightly related to his urge to kill (2013b)? His decision to kill all the
occupants of his house did not solely result from one night of gaming, for it was an accumulation
of risk factors. It is likely that his love for gaming could have had an

11. Recidivism, And Its Potential Indicators Essay
Recidivism, and its potential indicators, remains a phenomenon that criminological research is
eager to investigate. This comes as no surprise considering approximately 60% of people
undergoing a custodial sentence in Australia have already been imprisoned before (AIC 2011), as
well as the estimate that crime costs Australia almost $36 billion a year (AIC 2011). Yet despite
these staggering statistics, studies on recidivism are far and few between (Payne 2007, p.iii) and
thus, more studies ought to be conducted to develop strategies [that] target reducing offending
(Payne 2007, p.9).
Moreover, of existing research, only an estimated 15% have looked into the relevance of mental
health to recidivism (Payne 2007, p.53). This is in despite of the existing research suggesting a
positive correlation between mental health issues and recidivism (Payne 2007, pg.97,xiii).
Therefore, Professor Doe s research will provide needed insight into recidivism, as well as its nexus
with mental health.
However, as it currently stands, this proposal is riddled with ethical dilemmas. Israel and Hay
(2005) identified non maleficence, confidentiality and informed consent as the primary ethical
conundrums researchers face and this is reflected in Doe s proposal. Notwithstanding the presence
of these ethical concerns, this essay will argue that they can be mitigated by altering research
procedures. Enacting the alterations would assist the proposal passing an ethics board and allow

Distinguish between the concepts of conflict, dispute, and negotiation. Examine their differences
as well as how they relate to each other. Conflict is a struggle; clashing of views or statements .
(Cope, 2014) A dispute would be a controversy or disagreement that pushes a person s buttons to
make them prove another person wrong. (Cope, 2014) Negotiation however, is the process or
attempt at resolving a conflict that has elevated into a dispute. People come across conflicts daily as
humans and rarely agree with each other. Conflicts arise due to how an individual views something
that happened; an action that took place or even a statement or opinion that is expressed. Conflict,
disputes, and negotiation are interrelated to each other. A... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first topic I found interesting in this course is the Levels of Conflict Model. I had never
contemplated or understood the levels of conflict before. It creates perfect sense that each level
would progress up to the next level. Starting with life experiences, until a life experience is
perceived as being harmful, it stays just an experience. After viewing a life experience as a
harmful experience, the persons thought process automatically flows into who or what to
blame for this experience, escalating the conflict to the blaming level. Then once one figures
out who or what to blame they either stop there, as did the author Joey Cope of our course
materials did in his piece Defining the Levels of Conflict (Cope, 2014) or consequently, they
move on to the claiming step. Once at the claiming step their needs can range from an apology to
monetary demands depending on how severe the experience is deemed to be. All of which would
fulfill the need for justice, although if the other party is not willing to provide this justice, then the
need further escalates the conflict to a dispute ending with a negotiator, a lawyer, and/ or in a
courtroom. Understanding how conflict escalates can only render a negotiator more effective. It
can help the negotiator de escalate conflict, or in disputes, assist parties in understanding one s
perspective. Understanding how one came to the blaming level and/or claiming level of the
perceived harmful life experience can be valuable

The Battles of Lexington and Concord occurred on 19 April 1775 between the British Regulars and
the Patriot Militia, also known today as Americans, in the Massachusetts towns of Lexington and
Concord. The Battles of Lexington and Concord is often referred to as the Shot Heard Around the
World and the beginning of the American Revolutionary War(Fischer, 1994). The Battles of
Lexington and Concord consisted of in four events: the skirmish in Lexington between the British
Regulars and the Lexington Training Band, the search and seizure of arms, munitions and military

appointed Major John Pitcairn as the Executive Officer for the mission. The initial mission
would consist of approximately 700 British Regulars, who were pulled from 11 of General Gage

In the film remember the titans directed by Boaz Yakin is a film set in Alexandria Virginia in
1971. There are many themes portrayed. An example of one of the themes is a change in the
character towards overcoming racism and uses effects such as camera angles and symbolism.
These changes will be shown by Gerry s character in the movie. At the beginning of the movie
the first school was being merged and none of the races was happy about it. Gerry is strongly
racist this is shown by when the riot happens when a white shopkeeper kills a black teenager and

17. Hoeffler Civil War
In examining the multiple possible causes of civil wars and how to code them there has been
plenty of debate. Despite all the differences and variations in definitions of civil wars and focuses
on causes, authors Fearon, Laitin (2003), Collier and Hoeffler (2004) and Sambanis (2004) all
manage to agree that income level and population size have a significant effect on the probability a
country has on going into a civil war. Fearon and Laitin argue that what puts a country at risk of
civil waris their liability to insurgency, which is loosely defined as guerilla warfare from a small
group presumably against a government. They single out poverty, political instability, rough terrain
and large populations all as conditions that favor insurgency.... Show more content on

I d like to argue that having one definition is bad. Having several definitions allow for the coding
of many types of conflicts (small, large; long, short; deadly to militants, deadly to all; etc.) and
thus it allows for the study of many types of significant variables. I believe that having a loose
definition will allow for certain proxies to civil war to be discovered and deemed significant in
the future. I agree with Sambanis though when he pushes for transparency in the definitions of
civil wars. In some aspects of both the Fearon and Laitin article and the Collier and Hoeffler
article more context would have been helpful to some of their conclusions. Another critique for
Collier and Hoeffler is the subjectivity of some of their decisions. Specifically, at one point they
compare the concentration of the population in peace zones versus war zones, finding that in
peace zones concentration is lower by .03. It is ambiguous to say this is lower due to the data (as
an uninformed reader I d classify concentration in peace and war zones are the same base on the
numbers .57 and .60), and I m concerned what the data looks like for some of their other
conclusions and whether their conclusions actually hold up with strict guidelines. As for Fearon
and Laitin, I feel that sometimes they just accepted the previous conclusions of other academics,
without elaborating on why the agree

19. Essay On Casino Royale
When I first began reading this book, I assumed that it would be like the 2 previous books in the
series: fast paced with good action and good characters, but more a fun read than anything else.
It was going to be enjoyable in an Ocean s Eleven or Casino Royale way like its predecessors.
And so going into this, my initial reaction was surprise. In the first chapter I was already delving
into the past of Kat and Hale s powerful bond and the history of their relationship, something I
thought would never be explained. Already, the book was surprising me with its depth of character
development and hidden deeper meanings. Throughout the book the theme of the characters taking
on much bigger and influential roles continued. I learned to lovethe characters not just as
characters but real people; I learned to look at Kat s world not just as all bright, cheerful hues,
but this book revealed the shadowy, dark shades of Kat s world as well: corruption, hurt, and lots
of angst. But, powering through it all and saving the day was the infinite loyalty and love of her
family.
While reading the book, I don t think my reactions and responses varied greatly. However, they
differed greatly from my reactions and responses while reading the previous books, when I was

The Passionate Shepherd to His Love and The Nymph s Reply to the Shepherd: A comparison
The Passionate Shepherd to His Love was written by Christopher Marlowe. The poem describes
a shepherd s plea to someone he loves urging them to live with him. Marlowe uses imagery to
describe the scenery around the shepherd and his love. The shepherd tries to convince her how
happy they will be, surrounded by mountain yields and groves in stanza one. Marlowe does not
only use imagery in his poem but he also describes the aroma And a thousand fragrant posies. He
creates a tranquil atmosphere by describing the harmonious sound in the second and third stanzas.

In the first stanza she says that if everything that the shepherd had said to her was true she would
live with him and be his love. However she tries to bring him to his senses and make him realize
that things do change and nothing is permanent. The flowers do fade and wanton fields To
wayward Winter reckoning yields. In the quotation above she is expressing the idea that when
winter comes the flowers will no longer be in their full bloom. Again in the fourth stanza the
nymph tells the shepherd that beds of roses and posies will not last in winter. Sir Walter Ralegh
uses the nymph to make the point that spring changes to autumn as youth changes to old age and
because of this she will not live with the shepherd. This conveys the impermanence of nature and
by implication the impermanence of love. In comparison with the shepherd s description it is a
more brutal but realistic portrayal of love. The Passionate Shepherd to His Love is an idealistic
poem with fairytale images of country life whilst Sir Walter Ralegh s poem parodies the style of a
love letter. The poems are similar in that they are connected by a question and answer form. Both
poems have similar structures as they both have six stanzas and rhyming couplets. The rhyming
couplets stress the last word of the sentence drawing attention to them helping the reader to
understand the poem.

24. Freedom Of Speech, The Most Precious Amendment In The...
Freedom of speech, the most precious amendment in the United States Constitution. Why? Because
without our freedom to share our opinions, write our thoughts, tell our stories, challenge other
thoughts, processes, and even our government, we would be chained by the slavery of control and
censorship. Yes, maybe a bit dramatic but as a female mixed race student athlete I think my life
would be very different without my first amendment right of Freedom of Speech. My ancestors were
slaves to other human beings. Without a voice, without the right to say yes, or no, or maybe. No
voice, no opinion, no significance. WRONG!
Should the government monitor the internet? Wow, I think that is a really hard question that our
government has been challenged with since the digital age exploded into our lives and everything
we do. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is now a regular part of our lives. Actually as a 17 year old, I don’t know anything
different. The internet is a way to explore and connect. If we have the government monitoring our
use, how is that different than from tapping into our phone and listening to our conversations or
telling us we can’t protest like the recent demonstrations we have seen from first
generation American Hispanics requesting rights to becoming citizens of our country?
I am a 100% supporter of freedom of speech but I also know my personal and national security can
be at risk if we don’t at least know about plots being planned or people trying to harm
others. That’s the dilemma! If you have 100% freedom of speech you cannot protect
100% of the child being bullied by others, prevent a teen suicide, or avoid the next 9/11 event that
can take thousands of lives. I wonder if the recent shooting from Las Vegas could have been
prevented if the shooter’s gun buying activities had been regularly been monitored on the

25. The Discovery Of Gold And Australia
The discovery of gold in Australia dramatically changed the course of our steadily developing
country. The gold rush massively impacted every aspect of the nation, although not all these
changes were positive. With the gold rush came the introduction of more diverse culture, increased
population and infrastructure. Before the 1850 s, Australiawas a prison colony meant as a
punishment for convicts of the British. However, in just the fifty years after the beginning of the
Australian gold rush, Australia became an independent country. From a wilderness inhabited by
convicts to a free and federated nation in less than half a century. Without the gold rush, our
society wouldn t be what it is today. The discovery of gold sparked a massive influx of
immigration to the still forming country of Australia. During the very early years of the gold rush,
NSW and Victoria were the centre for gold mining and attracted thousands of hopeful diggers. This
rapid introduction of new people had many impacts on Australian society. People came from
different points of the world to mine on Australia s gold rich fields. The majority of were British but
many others came from Germany, Italy, France, China and even America. This created a rich
multicultural melting pot that would forever forge a highly diverse population. A repercussion of a
sudden influx of multiculturalism was the targeting of a group of foreigners that attracted particular
attention. These were the Chinese; as their numbers began

Ultimately, I believe that Bernard Williams argument that utilitarianism is inconsistent with
personal integrity is right. It removes the ability for formulate a decision based on one s own
ideas and values. Utilitarianism can truly limit one s life and that is not right. The basis of morality
is the quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct. Therefore, moralitycannot
demand that one make decisions that he/she truly does not choose. Every person has a free will

29. Viva La Vida And The Count Of Monte Cristo
While each piece of literature is completely different, some of them have similar patterns and
ideas. One of these ideas would be human nature. Human nature is anything that is natural for a
human to do and can not be stopped easily. Things like greed and too much power can change
someone greatly. This can be the cause of many problems and can make someone who is a good
person into a bad person. In Viva La Vidaand The Count of Monte Cristo, the writers use of
allusions and metaphors convey the idea that human nature can be the cause of misfortune.
The story of Viva La Vida, by Coldplay, is about a king who has too much power and ends up
being overthrown from people in his kingdom. Coldplay expresses this story in metaphors.

This king had the key to the castle, meaning that he knew what the people wanted. The way
Coldplay explains this story makes it seem like the people living in the king s castle turned on
him, hence the reference to the walls closing in on himself. This king must have been hated for
something he did, then again, every human makes mistakes. Although, this must not have been
the first time because he lost his whole castle just from a mistake. Then he starts to realize why
he was wrong. The downfall of this king could have been from bragging about his power too
much since it is human nature to brag. Or possibly being overwhelmed with too much power
giving his enemies a chance to attack. Another metaphor with the same meaning can be found in
The Count of Monte Cristo. The same thing that happened to Brutus the night before the Battle
of Philippi: I saw a ghost. And that ghost told me I have lived long enough (Dumas 381). At this
moment in the story, the count is preparing for his duel with Albert. He then tells Maximilien
that he plans on dying during the duel and leaving Maximilien his will. Maximilien is shocked
and asks the count why he would ever do such a thing. The count responds with the above quote.
This quote is a metaphor and shows how it is in a human s nature to want to forget the people
who you don t like. This quote uses the example of Mercedes since she was the ghost that came
to Dantes the night before the duel and begged him not to kill her son. Dantes responds by saying
that he can not live with the dishonor of backing away from a duel, so he agreed to let Albert

30. Impact Bumpers On Truck Trailers
Currently, rear impact guards on truck trailers are effective at up to 30 mph. These bumpers are
also known as ICC bumpers or underride guards. That speed was set because the crash protection
standards that must protect occupants of passenger vehicles is set at 30 mph. However, because
passenger vehicles how must protect occupants that are involved in frontal impact crashes at up to
35 mph, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a notice of
proposed rule making that requires ICC bumpers to be withstand a crash at up to 35 mph.
The ICC bumpers are required on most trailers and semitrailers so that should a vehicle hit the
trailer from the rear, the guards keep the vehicle from going under the trailer. According to the
NHTSA, many newer trailers already meet this regulation. If the regulation is put in place, it would
affect Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Any time a smaller vehicle, especially a compact vehicle, runs into the back of a large trailer, it
has the potential to go so far under the trailer that the bottom of the trailer could decapitate or
otherwise harm those in the passenger vehicle. ICC bumpers prevent this from happening at speeds
under 35 or 30 mph.
Trucks Without Underride Guards or ICC Bumpers
Some trucks, such as dump trucks, are not required to have ICC bumpers. Although the ICC
bumpers don t protect vehicles that hit the trailer or trucks at the outer edges, the bumpers have
saved many lives in crashes where the vehicle struck a truck or trailer from the inner edges to the
center. Because they do work, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has asked the
NHTSA to require that rear impact guards are installed on dump trucks and other trucks that are not
required to have them.

The Australian political system consists of many different levels of power. While the government is
set up with a system of checks and balances, the power of different people, agencies, and

different components to the Australian political system. They range from the Queen, exercised by
the Governor General, all the way down to the people. The people could be the most important part

The two most important functions to the Australian political system are the House of
Representatives and the Senate. Paraphrased, Section 51 of the Australian Constitution says, The
Parliament of Australia (formally named the Parliament of the Commonwealth) is made up of a
total of 226 people popularly elected to the Senate and House of Representatives to represent the
interests of Australians and to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the nation.
(Commonwealth of Australia) Their responsibilities also include: drafting legislation, creating an
administration, and being a representative to the political system for the people of Australia. Their
main duty is representing the people who elected them. They must act in the best interest of the
electoral district they live in or fear losing their seat at the next election. This is how their power is
mediated. Unlike the P.M. whose loyalty is to the party than the nation (to some degree), Parliament
must be loyal to their constituents. If they are not doing a good job or make mistakes they could
lose their next election. This gives the voters of Australia the opportunity to form government, in a
different context. While the majority party creates the government, they have to first be voted to
Parliament by the people. This form of mediation is very appropriate. Unfortunately, it can be

32. How Do Driverless Cars Drive Themselves
How do Driverless Cars Drive Themselves? Manufacturers across the globe like Tesla, Mercedes

now they are a reality. Although the most difficult concept of this all is to figure out how they

the LIDAR system, Computer Visionsystems, and Central Hub computer systems. Investments from

The system is quite similar to sonar and radar, but the only difference would be that LIDAR uses
lasers while sonar and radar use sound and radio waves. What it does is it uses 64 rotating lasers
send micro pulses of light to see where everything is. It uses time of flight which is when it
calculates how long it takes the laser to hit the target and reflect back to the LIDAR system.
Millions of data points are taken every second and used to make a 3D map of its surroundings
and used to show where the car can and cannot go. The 3D map made by the LIDAR is
processed by a system called the Computer Vision. It is the only part of the car that can make
sense of the 360 degree pictures taken by cameras. What it does is look out for certain road
markers a human would have to look out for such as, traffic lights, road signs, and other cars. It
also is constantly on the lookout for other unimportant things like traffic cones, and the very
important things like pedestrians. The last part of the driverless car system is the Central
Computer. The Central Computer reads the data the LIDAR and Computer Vision give and
decides where it will guide the car with the steering, acceleration, and brakes. This computer can

33. Given To Fly Eddie Vedder Meaning
In 1991 when Eddie Vedder wrote and performed his album Ten, he knew he was competing with
the big time grunge band; Nirvana. Once it hit the stage it was clear there was no competition.
Eddie s deep, emotional messages throughout this album, his shaky, raspy voice that transfers from
screaming lyrics to soft, poetic like speaking. All tied together with his hard to hate persona that
can be heard throughout this album and every album made by Eddie Vedder.
In the song Given To Fly Eddie says He got up out of there, ran for hundreds of miles / He made
it to the ocean, had a smoke in a tree / The wind rose up, set him down on his knee. In this verse
Eddie is describing his life and how he needs to get away from it all and just have a peaceful
break, alone. Vedder likes to use his life in third person in most of his songs to make his message
more distant, and almost more easily relatable. The song Given To Fly is actually a second or a
reference to the song Going to California By Led Zeppelin and how just leaving might help out
more than anything. Throughout the album there are several different songs with an abundance
of different meanings. The song, Alive, has one of the deepest messages that is tied to his life
personally. The song is about a boy that finds out that who he thought was his father, is actually
his stepfather and his real father is dead. Eddie said the song is a work of fiction based on reality

The sound of Louis Armstrong and and people dancing could be heard throughout the old jazz

Jazz is not only an artform, but also a story of a race. Jazz was created to help deal with the

The world may never know the truth on who is indeed responsible for the Holocaust.
There are many points to be made for different direction on who is to blame. It s obvious that
Hitler isn t fully the one to blame, there are many others too. Such as the Minor Nazi soldiers and
the SS officers who designed and executed the Final Solution for Hitler, leaders of the Allied
countries who had evidence of the Holocaust but refused to get involved. Some people may argue
on who is responsible for the Holocaust. It s believed that Hitler is one of the main causes of the
Holocaust. Adolf Hitler was the leader of the Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. Hitler Initiated
fascist policies that led to World War II and the deaths of at least 11 million people, including the
mass murder of an estimated 6 million Jews. Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889, in
Braunau am Inn, Austria. He was the fourth child out of six children. As a child Hitler s father
regularly beat him during his childhood, it was not unusual for discipline to be enforced in that
way during that period. By 1900, Hitler s talents as an artist had arisen. He didn t do well enough

Chinese modern nursing started its evolution in the 1888 when the first formal hospital was opened

faced a period of nursing halt after the abolishment of the practice. When the government that
abolished the practice collapsed in 1977, the practice came back to normal but left a gap of 30
years deficit in practice and development of the nursing profession. Therefore, China s nursing

The authors effectively establish baseline hormone levels by ensuring the stress hormones
measured during experiments are not solely due to the procedural stress of acupuncture needles.
Acclamation ensures that the needles and procedure are no longer novel to the rats and the stress
related hormones primarily reflect exposure to the ice/water treatment.
Although Eshkevari et al. engage in clinically worthy research aided by a beneficial acclamation
protocol, major concerns arise regarding the generalizability of the results due to the utilization of
only male rats. The work of Vieira et al. (1) suggests that sexual dimorphism impacts the stress
response and demonstrates that female rats experience enhanced vulnerability to stress evoked
HPA axis changes. Even if the results of the Eshkevari et al. study propose EA at St36 as a
therapeutic option in male rats, sexual dimorphism may negate any therapeutic effects in female
rats and necessitates future research to determine if EA presents therapeutic benefits in both sexes.
Further concerns arise from the authors conclusion that EA benefits are specific to St36
stimulation. Eshkevari et al. cite elevated ACTH and CORT levels in sham EA rats as evidence
that the suppression of the stress hormones is specific to EA at St36. The results section, however,

The conspiracies associated with the reason why the USA joined the Vietnam War led to massive
resistance against the draft in the early 1970 s. In response to being picked in the draft, many
Americans fled to Canada because American citizens believed that the federal government had
selfish and unreasonable intentions in joining the war in Vietnam, which was to destroy the spread
of communism. The intentions of the federal government when joining the Vietnam War relates
to The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien because Tim O Brien also considered dodging the
draft and immigrating to Canada but as a consequence of social pressure, the guilt he felt resulted
in the change of his mindset. While On the Rainy River condemns the idea of heroism because it
applies oppressive pressure on soldiers, The Ghost Soldiers celebrates the idea of heroism because
it allows one to enter dangerous situations with great fortitude in order to save others lives.
In the beginning of On The Rainy River, O Brien condemns the idea of heroism because he feels
that it is unfair that he is forced to fight in Vietnam when he doesn t find the true purpose of the
war. O Brien is flabbergasted when he receives news of his nomination from the draft to fight in
Vietnam: I was too good for this war. Too smart, too compassionate, too everything (39). When O

43. Mental Health Treatment Plan
Veterans who have been deployed to combat and endured trauma display higher levels of
emotional distress and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Yarvis, 2013). Moreover, the
exposure to traumatic events over the lifespan relates to issues that impact the individual by a wide
range of mental health problems (Briere Scott, 2012). The VA offers a vast majority of mental health
services, however there are particular interventions that are not offered because there aren t enough
medical practitioners certified or exposed to certain therapies. With respect to the patient, this paper
will discuss an unsuccessful treatment plan that would have prospered had the veteran underwent
an alternative route of interventions. Although a medical team follows the veteran, her PTSD
symptoms continue to affect her day to day life.
Mini Bio Psycho Social Assessment The veteran is a 38 year old, White, Operation Enduring

Situation Analysis:
In recent years, Kmart has established itself as the third leading discount retailer in the United

Use Of Symbolism In The Catcher In The Rye and The Great Gatsby There are many writers like
James Joyce, Patrick Kananach and Thomas Moore who use symbolism to convey and support
indirect meaning in their writings. J.D. Salinger and F. Scott Fitzgerald both use symbolism in
similar ways. In both The Catcher In The Rye and The Great Gatsby , the authors used
symbolism to convey emotions and reality. In The Catcher In The Rye , J.D. Salinger uses
Holden s red hunting cap, the exhibits at the Museum of Natural History and kings in the back
row as symbols whose meanings help tell the story. Holden s red hunting hat stands for Holden s
disapproval of adult society and phonies. Although, Holden and his hat are out of place in New...

Fitzgerald also uses colors for symbolism. The color white is used many times in the story. The
author uses white to describe Gatsby s clothes and his mansion. The color white represents
Gatsby s innocence and pure heart. The color yellow is also used throughout the story as a
symbol of corruption and death. The car that Gatsby drives was yellow and his yellow car killed
Myrtle. The flower that Daisy is named after is white on the outside and yellow in the middle.
Daisy seems innocent on the outside, but her real character is as corrupt and greedy as Tom s.
Throughout The Catcher In The Rye and The Great Gatsby , symbolism is used to paint mental
pictures for the reader. The symbols used allow the reader to foresee the character s emotions,
beliefs and values. Ultimately, the authors uses of symbols make both novels more interesting and

The word crusade is from a French term that mean to lift the cross. The word is used to describe
the early military War or the campaigns by early Christians against Muslims. The Crusades were
military campaigns sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church during the High and Late Medieval
Ages. In The year 1095, Pope Urban the Second proclaimed the First Crusade with the goal of
restoring Christian admission to holy places in and Around Jerusalem. Following this First Crusade
there was an alternating over 100 years struggle for dominance over the Holy Land, with seven
more major crusadesand numerous minor ones, These Muslims controlled the holy land (currently
they are Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel) subsequently (Slack in 2003) and Christian all

Robert Hoffman
Linux
Research 2.1
Security for computers is one of the most important aspects of a system that has to be in place.
For this paper I will be writing about four security features that Linux systems use; these are
SELinux,
chroot jail, openSSH, and iptables. I will briefly describe what they do to provide security.
SELinux (security enhanced Linux) was developed by the NSA, who chose Linux as its
operating system to create a more secure operating system. Since the development of SELinux by
the
NSA most Linux distributions now implement SELinux as a standard. Traditional Linux systems
use a
security called (DAC) discretionary access control. With this approach users and their objects, i.e.,

Setting iptables is highly beneficial to your system, along with a main firewall iptables allows for
a more secure system based on parameters you set in the iptables.
OpenSSH is a set of programs that provide encrypted communication between networks. Created by
the openBSD team as an alternative to the original SSH software. When it starts there are two
tasks that it performs right away, first it establishes an encrypted connection, second it
authenticates the user. When these two tasks are complete two systems can securely send
information back and forth. When the session is started openSSH encrypts anything sent out on
the network, this prevents many security risks from being exploited. Two key pairs are used to
enable an encrypted connection; a host key pair and a session key pair. The host key pair is
established when the system forst boots and consists of public and private keys. The session
key pair also consists of a public and private key and these change hourly. When a client first
connects with a server you are asked to verify that the server you are wanting to connect to is the
right one. Once verification is complete the client make a copy of the servers public host key so
the next time the client wants to connect to that server it will have a copy of the key to verify the
server with.

49. Analysis Of Three Days
Three Days
You have exactly three days, the scary Neptunian said. George Buckner turned off his 40 TV in
shock. According to the news report, Neptunians, the people of Neptune, have launched a missile
that is going to hit Earth in exactly 72 hours, or three days. If what the Neptunians say is true, then
they launched the missile because they want to destroy the Earth. They say that this is because
pollution from the Earth has reached their planet, and it is causing global warming on Neptune.
George knows that once his grandfather sees this, he will give George another one of his rants,
probably somewhat like this:
75 years ago, back in 2216, you could look up, and actually see blue sky, not grey clouds from
pollution. Now all you ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Alex said that he was having a party soon, and he was wondering if George would like to come.
Deep down, George knew that he had no chance at stopping the missile, so he might as well live it
up for possibly the last three days of his life.
George went over to Alex s house and found out that almost everyone there was in the same boat
as him. They saw the notice about 1 billion dollars and were really excited, but when they started
to research it, they discovered they are completely hopeless at stopping the missile. Knowing that
stopping the missile was extremely complicated for everyone, not just George, made him feel a
bit better. It also made it a bit easier to enjoy the dancing and singing, which were especially crazy
because everyone was pretty sure they only had 3 days to live.
After the party, George saw another notice, this one saying the missile is going to hit in exactly
2 days, 2 hours and 2 minutes. Seeing this gave George a great idea. His friend David Lesner,
whose nickname is 222, knows lots about technology. George decides to call him and see if they
can meet, and talk about how to stop the missile. He calls 222 and 222 says that he would be glad
to try and help George stop the missile. They decide to meet at 222 s house the next day after school.
Within five minutes of talking/working, they get into an argument. 222 says that since he knows

50. Social Class Research Paper
Social life in Britain during the nineteenth century wascharacterized by different social classes: the
upper class, the middle class and the working class . The difference in social classes could be
distinguished by inequalities in wealth, education, working and living conditions .The classes lived
in separate areas and they observed different social customs (Mitchell, 2009:17).
First, the upper class was the least studied of all classes; people from the upper class were mostly
extremely wealthy and had numerous privileges unlike other classes (William, 2004:307). It
consisted of the aristocrats, ruling families, titled people, and religious hierarchs. Those people had
a fortune to be born with their high status and they did not have to make much effort to earn their
place in society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the eldest son inherited the estate, he was expected to do something useful to sit in the

stay at home until they get married. Traditionally, children from the upper class were brought up at
home by nanny for the first years of life. Then they would be schooled at home by private teachers.
Second, during the nineteenth century Britain knew an extraordinary growth in population. By the
beginning of the nineteenth century it was about ten and half millions and at the time ofthe 1901 it
had more than tripled to reach thirty seven millions (Ford, 1982:22). So, the enormous rise in
population led to the rapid growth of the middle class and forced a change in political balance. It
consisted of bankers, large shopkeepers, businessmen, doctors, lawyers and the clergy (Mitchell,

After countless tries by my ancestors to establish a life in the United States it seemed destiny
had a place for me. Come to think of it, may it wasn t destiny calling my family to cross the
border, rather our native land was calling us home. Still how colonized have I become to accept
my new identity. In the novel, Cruz comments that Esperanza changed her son s name from
Robert to Bobby. (Loc. 215) Call him Bobby. In America, he s Bobby, Esperanza said (Cruz). My
parents didn t assimilate that quickly. My full name is Socorro Martinez, and I m the youngest of
eight children. My father came to this country during the Bracer Act Program, after it was
terminated in 1964 he worked in construction. My mother followed six years later with three
children, after losing her daughter to an illness. I was named after my mother but was given the
nick name Suki. Growing up no one called by my first name. I built an identitybased on my nick
name, and slowly my cultural identitywas diminishing.
I found it coincidental that like my family I too embarked in a journey and sacrificed for my
children. My husband, children and I moved Washington State two years ago. Just like Santo left
the Dominican Republic and Esperanza left Puerto Rico towards the United States to give their
family a better life. (Loc. 332) Although I was surrounded by a vast amount of greenery, I missed
the sound and faces of my culture. I couldn t blend in with the locals. Growing up in a barrio, I

52. The Sunni-Shia Conflict
The historic background of the Sunni Shia lies in the schism that occurred when the Islamic
prophet Mohammed died in the 632, leading to a dispute over succession to Mohammed as a
caliph of the Islamic community spread across various parts of the world, which led to the battel of
Safin. The dispute intensified greatly after the battle of Karbala, in which Hussein ibn ail and his
household were killed by the ruling Umayyad caliph Yazidi, and the outcry for revenge divided the
early Islamic community. Today, there are differences in religious practice, traditions, and customs,
often related to jurisprudence. Although all Muslims groups consider the Quran to be divine, Sunni
and Shia have different opinions on hadith.

Hassan is believed to have been poised in 680 by muawiyah, the first caliph of the Sunni Umayyad
dynasty, while Hussein was killed on the battlefield by the Umayyad s in 691.these events gave rise
to the Shia concept of martyrdom and the rituals of grieving.
Shia Islam: Shia Islam encompasses most Muslims who are not counted the Sunni. The division
between Sunni and Shia, dates to the death of the prophet Mohammed when his followers were
faced with the decision of who would be his successors as the leader of Islam s. Shiites are those
followed Ali, the closest relatives of Mohammed, as Muhammad s successor. Today there are
approximately 120 million Shiite Muslims in the world.
The Shia consists of one major of thought known as the jafaryia or the Twelver s , and a few minor
schools of thought, as the Seveners or the fivers . These names all refers to the number of imams
they recognize after the death of Mohammed. The term Shia is usually meant to be synonymous

53. Fracking, An Energy Extraction Process
INTRODUCTION Hydraulic fracturing, commonly known as fracking, is an energy extraction
process that has recently been consumed in a lot of controversy regarding the possible side
effects that it could be having on the environment. Specifically, fracking is a method used to
extract and release natural gas and petroleum from under deep layers of hard rock called shale
rock located thousands of feet under the Earth s surface. This process has been around since the
1940 s and involves the injection of a fluid mixture that consists of 90 percent water, 9.5 percent
sand, and 0.5 percent chemicals. (Cohen, 2011) In this high pressured fluid injection, the fluid
causes the deep shale rock to have tiny cracks, in which the natural gas trapped in... Show more

This paper will address how hydraulic fracturing, fracking, is likely to directly or indirectly
cause earthquakes in nearby areas surrounding the injection wells. DISCUSSION The theory
behind hydraulic fracturing induced earthquakes is reasonable and deserves to be respected
because it is developed under very sound principles. In fracking, where large amounts of fluids
are injected into the Earth, the injected fluid creates a high pressure gradient and facilitates a
smoother movement for nearby faults to cause seismic activity. (Guest, 2015) With that being
said, the amount of earthquakes with a magnitude of greater than three on the Richter scale in the
U.S. midcontinent has been on a fairly consistent, linear increase since 1967. However, this trend
experienced a noticeable change around 2001, in which the levels of seismic activity veered off
course and showed to have a exponential increase compared to previous statistics. (Ellsworth,
2013) From this increase in activity, there is a lot of speculation and research that humans have
induced the extra seismic activity. One of the activities in particular that is believed to have led to
the induced activity, is the process described above known as hydraulic fracturing. Although the
fracking process has been used for a very long time, it is currently being related to seismicity
around well location as the number of earthquakes in these areas increases. For most

The power not delegated to the united states by the constitution, nor prohibited by it to the state, are
reserved to the states respectively, or to the people (10, Bill of rights). This Amendment was
included in Bill of Rights to express the balance power between the federal government and state
government. The amendment says that the federal government has only those powers given by the
Constitution. Those powers are to declare war, to collect taxes, to formulate business activities

In contrast state governments have all powers which are not clearly prevented by the state or U.S
Constitution. Thus, states have extensive powers and can do things that Congress cannot do. For
example, states can require young students to attend school and drivers to purchase automobile
insurance. Sometimes the congress and the white house think that federal government can to
whatever the majority yearn. However, the tenth amendment clearly prevents the majority from
doing whatever they want. Thus, they gave the federal government a very limited list of powers
and other powers reserved by the states and the people. They also provided an elaborate system
of checks and balances to limit the power of the majority to inflict its will. The Founders felt so
strongly about limited federal power as a bulwark of liberty that they added the Ten Amendment
as the final exclamation point in the Bill of Rights the federal government doesn t have the right
to destroy the rights of people by assuming powers that it did not have, which is reserved by states
and the people. (By George Landrith, May 25,
