10. Work-life Balance – What is it?
Concept has changed over time:
• 60s-70s – WLB was mainly considered an issue for working
mothers, trying to balance the demands of their jobs with
raising children
• 80s – Structural changes took place. For example, policies and
procedures, along with benefits were added/changed to
support WLB. Maternity leave, EAP’s, flextime, etc. Also in
the 80s, men began concerns around their own work-life
• 90s – Really solidified WLB as an issue that was vital for
everyone (men, women, singles, couples, parents, non-parents,
etc.) Also generational studies began to show how employees
were making choices about their jobs based on cultures of
companies and their own Work life issues.
• 21st
Century – is finding that many companies, though they’ve
adopted policies to support WLB, many were not
implementing them, or implementing them well.

If the jar was filled initially with the sand , then the big chunks could not be fitted in . If water were filled in the jar and afterwards pebbles and rocks were put, the entire water would have spilled out. The essence comes to that if your priorities are set right and you work according to them then your life follows a balanced style. The way this jar could contain stones, pebbles , sand and water , similarly if you want a elf –contained balanced life , you have to decide and plan a well designed schedule of family, business, social work, health profession etc. And thus you shall be able to have a satisfying life style.
When is the last time that you Achieved AND Enjoyed something at work? At home? With friends? With Family? Something just for you?
Challenge: Take 20 minutes on the way home from work and do something just for yourself. When you get home, before you walk in the door, think about what you want to achieve or enjoy at home. Act on that when you walk in. Same with work….
Relationship between pressure and performance is best shown in the Inverted U (Sometimes called the Yerkes Dodson Law)
The left side of the graph - when there is little pressure on us to carry out an important task, there is little incentive for us to focus energy and attention on it. Especially if there are more interesting or challenging tasks available
The right side of the graph – as we become uncomfortably stressed, distractions, difficulties, anxieties and negative thinking start to crowd our minds. This is particularly true when a person perceives that the demands being placed on them exceed their personal resources or support. These thoughts compete with performance of the task itself. Concentration suffers, focus narrows, as our brains become overloaded.
FLOW – Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi of Chicago University – Sufficiently motivated to resist competing temptations while not so stressed that anxiety and distraction interfere with your clear thoughts – You are using your skills to the utmost. It is an intensely creative, efficient and satisfying state of mind. (i.e. most impressive performances)
Also add something on how people become accustomed to constant levels of stress and may fail to even realize it’s there. That doesn’t mean it isn’t impacting them!
Came from an article “stress and your performance” http://www.mindtools.com/stress/UnderstandStress/StressPerformance.htm
Remember, recognizing the symptoms that will alert you to the fact that you may be under stress is key! You can’t do anything if you don’t recognize it first.
1.)In order to avoid negative stress, we need to be aware of, and prepared for, the impact of stressors: time pressures, too much work, too little work, deadlines, complex relationships with others, politics, unwanted changes at work, competing priorities, professional development demands
2.)Death of a family member or friend, breakup of a relationship/marriage, injury, moving, having a baby, new house and other large financial commitments
3.)Type A people are described as competitive, aggressive or hasty, Type B people are described as more passive, non-competitive, laid back and slow to respond. Type A people tend to pass stress on to others while Type B tend to internalize stress. Other categories that can impact you might be: Gender, age, health, financial situation, access to support.
