Teaching writing
Of the 4 skills, writing is arguably the most problematic for learners and often the most challenging
for teachers. Writing is not easy particularly when compared with speaking, where
reformulations, body language, clues from listeners can do much to compensate for a lack of
precision or inaccuracies when communicating messages. Time is also a factor – writing may be
relegated to homework tasks as there is often a feeling that writing in class uses up time which can
be more usefully spent on other activities. However, as this workshop aims to show, developing
good writing skills is conducive to the development of other language skills including
communication skills.

· Assessment of essays
All essays returned to you will have a marking matrix attached with comments. These are meant to be constructive and are made to point out errors and areas where improvements could be made. The comments will explain why you got the mark you did. They are, therefore, usually ‘critical’. You should consider these comments carefully, and try to understand why they were made. If you do not see the point, or want further comment, please take this matter up with whoever marked your essay, preferably via the course coordinator A/Prof Lara Lamb.
The following points will be noted particularly in marking essays:
1. Relevance to the topic set.
2. Organisation and effectiveness of argument, and proper use of anthropological concepts and principles as outlined during the course of your reading.
3. Evidence of reading outside the set texts and accuracy of facts presented in the essay.
4. Originality – careful and critical thought about the topic, and use of illustrative material from independent reading and also, to some extent, from observation and experience.
5. Accuracy and clarity of written English, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Overall legibility and general setting out will be noted, especially of essay structure and referencing.
How to write an essay/presentation
Do not go over the word limit. This is set specifically to help you develop a sharp and concise style. Going under the word limit is preferable to ‘padding out’ your answer with vagaries or ‘waffle’ to reach the word limit.
Do not use value judgements of subjective terminology such as: primitive, backward, surprisingly advanced, superior or developed. You must be objective and indicate clearly what you mean by your terms.
Writing an essay is a gradual process; the final version of an essay should have been developed over several drafts, prepared as you explore the topic and compile notes from reading material.
You will usually need to do some reading before you can grasp the significance of the set topic. Begin with the suggested references in your book of reading and, as you read, keep a copy of the actual wording of the topic/question in view. Initial reading will enable you to:
1. Recognise the implications underlying the actual wording of the topic.
2. Understand key ideas and terms.
3. Identify all parts of the set question.
After some preliminary reading, when you feel you are beginning to grasp the topic, draft an outline plan for your essay. This will involve drawing up headings for each major section of your essay, writing a statement, in .

EDITOR'S COMMENTS:
REFLECTIONS ON THE CRAFT OF
CLEAR WRITING
Writing is hard work. A clear sentence is no ac-
cident. Very few sentences come out right the first
time, or even the third time. Remember this in
moments of despair. If you find that writing is
hard, it's because it is hard (Zinsser, 2006: 9).
Most of us struggle with our writing. We
thrash and hack our way through paragraphs,
writing and editing and rewriting until we think
we've made some progress on that God-for-
saken manuscript. The next morning we turn on
the computer, read the file, and realize that our
work of art is a muddled mess. We curse, hit the
delete key, and start again. It can be a frustrat-
ing process, particularly for theory papers,
which are all about the writing.
But we hang in there. We finish the manu-
script and submit it to AMR. We wait. We wait
some more. We get the reviews. The rejection
stings, but the reviewer's comments are worse:
"I'm puzzled a s to what exactly you are trying to
accomplish here." "The first twenty-three pages
are an endless literature review." "I had to read
several pages into the manuscript to get a hint
about what you are trying to achieve." "What
exactly is this paper about? After reading it
twice, I'm still not sure."^
We open the freezer and reach for the Häagen-
Dazs. We think, "What is wrong with these re-
viewers? Why couldn't they understand the
point of my manuscript? It was so c l e a r . . . or
was it?"
The first challenge of clear writing is to un-
derstand your reader. With this in mind, I polled
current and past AMR board members, associate
editors, editors, and special issue reviewers to
Many thanks to the AMB reviewers who shared their per-
sonal reflections and insights on the craft of clear writing. I
also thank the editor, associate editors, and my doctoral
students (Dianne Murphy and Kyle Ehrhardt) for their com-
ments and suggestions on earlier drafts of this manuscript.
Most of all, I thank my husband, Erik Thelen, for encouraging
me to write this essay and for being my sounding board
throughout the process.

get their insights and recommendations on the
craft of clear writing, particularly as it applies to
theoretical articles. I asked them to share (1)
their peí peeves about the writing style, organi-
zation, and presentation of theoretical manu-
scripts; (2) their thoughts on why authors engage
in poor writing practices; and, perhaps most im-
portant, (3) their advice and iecommendations
for writing clear theoretical articles. This simple
request opened a floodgate: sixty-seven review-
ers responded with over a hundred pages of
advice and reflections on the craft of writing.
I've selected a few of the most common themes

Midway to the deadline for the 2030 education targets, the 2024 Gender Report due out on Girls in ICT day (25 April) assesses the progress made towards achieving gender parity across all levels of education. While examples of stubborn exclusion remain, the report tells a positive story at the global level for girls’ access and education attainment over the past two decades. A companion to the 2023 GEM Report, A tool on whose terms?, this gender edition asks in what circumstances technology is helping with gender equality in education. While in some instances technology can provide a lifeline for girls otherwise altogether excluded from education, there remain gender divides in access to technology and acquisition of digital skills.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

47. Tips for Writing
up your Work
Determine the type of physical
environment you need to be productive.
Determine the time of day when you write
best, and the length of time needed.
“Talk” your way through. Describe to
yourself or to others what you intend to
write.
Before stopping, list what you intend to
do during the next writing session.
48. Tips, (cont.)
Set aside what you have written and reread
after some time has gone by (days).
Don’t get bogged down in the technical
aspects of writing such as spelling and
grammar; these can be corrected later.
Expect there will be times when conditions
are perfect, but you still cannot write: do
something else and try again later.
49. For More Engaging
Writing...
Narrative of some personal experience.
Open or close with a quotation / poetry.
Use humor (appropriately).
Begin with a controversial or debatable
statement.
Use metaphors (implied comparisons).
51. The Publication Process
Manuscript is submitted according to “author” or
“submission” guidelines.
The editors may do a “pre-screening” for
appropriateness of the ms. for the journal.
Ms. is sent out for review to 2 or 3 reviewers; the
review is “blind” in that the author does not know
who is reviewing the ms., nor do the reviewers
know who the author is.
Reviewers return review to the editors who then
make a final judgment on its status.
52. Publication Process
(cont.)
Author is notified with a cover letter from
the editors and comments from reviewers.
An “accepted” decision almost always
requires some revisions.
Author makes revisions and returns ms. to
the editors with a cover letter saying what
revisions were done.
Author receives page proofs for editing.
54. Increasing your Chances
Present your work at a conference or workshop for
feedback before writing the article.
Ask colleagues to read a draft of your article.
Develop a writing/reading group to help each
other.
Make a careful selection of the journal before you
write the article.
Follow “author” or “submission” guidelines and
format according to the journal.
Submit to one journal at a time. After 3 months
check on the “status” of your manuscript.
56. REVISE & RESUBMIT
This is not rejection!!!
Articles are very rarely
accepted for publication
without revision.
57. PERSISTENCE
“... authorial persistence, that is,
willingness to continue revising
and resubmitting when faced with
extensive critical commentary
from reviewers, can result in
publication.”
Belcher, D. (2007) Seeking acceptance
in an English-only research world.
Journal of second language writing.
(16) 1-22.
63. 6 Common Reasons for
Rejection of a Manuscript
Lack of a theoretical framework.
Tries to do too much, cover too many topics.
Focus of ms. is unclear and/or inconsistent.
Implications not explicit.
No support for claims made.
Ms. sent to wrong journal.
64. Plagiarism: What is it?
Plagiarism is defined as
presenting someone else’s
work, from any source
whatsoever, as your own.
www.ljmu.ac.uk/StudentServices/69038.htm
65. Plagiarism: How is it
detected?
Knowledge of the discipline and
its literature.
Changes in writing style,
inappropriate writing style.
Electronically using “Turnitin”.
Electronically using: “Google”.

69. CONCLUSION:
Successful Writing
Writing is hard work:
– Self discipline
– Self denial
– Rejection is high
“Writing is hard work, even to those
for those who enjoy it.”

What It Takes: does not come effortlessly to some
Timing: Good writer’s don’t make time; don’t find time---they reassign part of their time to writing
If writing really important, replace those things you do that are not as impt.
Nothing to write about: you possess knowledge about many topics that are valuable—start with subj. you are most familiar
Vocabulary—while an asset, so are dictionary and thesauruses who those who know how to use them and take the time to do so
Journals—search also for general journals, not specialty area ones—expand audience you are writing for
