William Howard Taft served as the 27th President of the United States from 1909 to 1913. Some key events of his presidency included establishing the United States Steel Corporation, responding to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911, and moving politically to the conservative right. He lost reelection in 1912 to Democrat Woodrow Wilson after splitting the Republican vote by running against Theodore Roosevelt's Progressive Party ticket. After leaving office, Taft became the only person to serve as both US President and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.
