Conformity In Kurt Vonnegut s Harrison Bergeron
American actress Emma Stone once said, What sets you apart can sometimes feel like a burden
and it s not. And a lot of the time, it s what makes you great. . This quote could represent the
message conveyed in Kurt Vonnegut Jr. s dystopian story Harrison Bergeron . In his piece, he
creates the setting of the world in the year 2081, where everyone has become equal and nobody is
different. Whether it be strengths, talents, disabilities, or intelligence, everyone has become
identical to one another, except for the main character Harrison Bergeron, who was arrested and
taken away by the government at the age of fourteen for being a nonconformist. After breaking out
of prison, he shows the world what it is like to be unique, until he is, unfortunately,... Show more

When describing the like minded people and their actions throughout Harrison Bergeron ,
Vonnegut uses very elementary and short sentences. After discounting their son s death, George
and Hazel Bergeron continue with their mediocre and regulated lives, when George hears a
ringing obscurity in his ear. Hazel then responds to him, saying, Gee I could tell that one was a
doozy, said Hazel. You can say that again, said George. Gee said Hazel, I could tell that one was a
doozy. (Vonnegut 6). Vonnegut utilizes these short sentences to portray how simple everyone has
become in this dystopian future. Consequently, the civilians seem to have no diversity; however,
when construing Harrison Bergeron s actions and the actions of the nonconforming ballerinas, the
author uses more complex and more involved sentence lengths. In the story, Vonnegut describes
the ballerinas as they dance together with Harrison, stating, Harrison and his Empress merely
listened to the music for a while listened gravely, as though synchronizing their heartbeats with it.
They shifted their weights to their toes. Harrison placed his big hands on the girl s tiny waist,
letting her sense the weightlessness that would soon be hers. And then, in an explosion of joy and
grace, into the air they sprang! Not only were the laws of the land abandoned, but the law of
gravity and the laws of motion as well. They reeled, whirled, swiveled,

South Korea Research Paper
The sociocultural role of sport in the country, including any political implications
South Korea loves sport, sport is not only a popular physical activity but is a significant social
practice. Sport operates as an important cultural resource and produces and disseminates
nationalism. Indeed, in recent years, south korea has shown competence in hosting, playing, and
managing sport. South Korean athletes have created notable results at major international sport
events. For example, since 1984, the national Summer Olympic team has unfailingly been ranked in
the top 10 nations on the medal table, with the only exception being the 2000 Sydney Olympic
Games. The country has also produced a number of major world sporting events, including hosting

This has had profound implications in the development of Korean society. Soon after the
liberation from Japan in 1945, the peninsula was sectioned into two parts and 5 years later, civil
war broke out in 1950. This war ended in 1953 without a peace treaty, which means the two
countries still technically are at war. More than 50 years of division has influenced the culture and
national opinions of the Korean people. The two Koreas see each other as political and military
enemies, but they also see themselves as an ethnically homogenous nation. So there is a strong
desire on both sides of the fence to reunify so that a unified Korean nation state can be created. The
reunification of the nation is one of the largest political projects in both South and North Korea.
This ethnic nationalism allows for occasional cooperation between the two countries such as North
Korea and South Korea marching together for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, 2004 Athens Olympics
and 2006 Turin Olympics. Sport in Korea has reflected these complicated relations. International
competitions created a symbolic battlefield between the two countries, at least until the 1980s.
North and South Korean governments invested heavily in developing skilled athletes and funded
part of the development of high performance sport in order to win more medals in international
games. This arms

Witches Role In Macbeth Essay
In Macbeth , written by William Shakespeare, the three witches play a crucial role in the play,
influencing: the characters, the plot, and themes. They could be regarded as a backbone in the
construct in the play as without these characters, the plot would be entirely dissimilar. During the
course of Macbeth, the weird sisters brought about a supernatural element in the play whilst
swaying the characters actions (mainly Macbeth) and, engaging the attention of the audience.
The witches absence would mean the absence of the supernatural theme of the play. In Macbeth ,
the supernatural is an integral part of the plot s structure and is a key aspect in making the play
interesting. It provided an acceleration for action, an insight into the character, and increased the
impact of many key scenes. The supernatural appeared to the audience in many varied forms not
only as the weird sisters, but also a floating dagger, and prophetic apparition. The use of this element
first occurred at the commencement of Macbeth , when the three witches revealed their prophecies
and gave the audience an idea of what was yet to come. It was only after this encounter, that

These elements were inclusive of sexual innuendo, violence and the supernatural. The audience, at
that time, perceived Macbeth s association with the witches relative to an association with the devil.
The weird sisters prophecies and apparitions would have drawn Shakespeare s audience in, but
would also have been particularity compelling to an assumed member, King James I. He had
recently published a renowned book on witchcraft and his influence within the country would have
meant the concept of witches were relevant in everyday life. Therefore, the notion of witches
tended to the audience s expectations, ultimately making the play more

Panera Bread Cast Study
Panera Bread Company in 2011 pursuing growth in a difficult economy Executive Summary
Louis Kane and Ron Shaich started a bakery cafГ©, Au Bon Pain Co., Inc. in 1981. The
company grew and between the 1980 s and 1990 s became the top bakery cafГ© operated
company. Ron Shaich, along with fellow team members traveled around the country studying
different fast food markets. They liked what they saw and realized that Au Bon Pain could be
constructed in a way to offer an exceptional dining experience. Au Bon Pain s Saint Louis Bread
locations were changed to meet this new dining experience. They had a vision, as stated in the
case, to create a specialty cafГ© anchored by an authentic, fresh dough, artisan bakery and upscale,

1). Panera s competitors, such as McDonald s and Starbucks so not cater. This should be
something they market to the consumers more. Catering would expand the kinds of buyers (ex.
1) such as business, families, schools, which would grow Panera s market segment rapidly.
Consumer s preferences are constantly changing in this industry (ex. 3). Offering more services,
such as catering, is a way to catch the consumers interest. With a growth rate of 26 percent in
2010 for Panera s catering proves that a new segment is being targeted. Panera needs to reach more
consumers through advertising, commercials, and incentives. We recommend Panera starts with
the health factor as our analysis indicates in the SWOT analysis of opportunities (ex. 10). Panera s
catering should also market incentives. If consumers have an incentive, such as first order 20%
off, they would be more willing to try new restaurants. The online Panera catering website will
grow the market segment because technology is rapidly growing and more and more competitors
will expand to forming a internet presence. In order to meet financial objective of 15 to 20 percent
we recommend taking these steps to capitalize on catering. With the help of the key success factors,
driving forces, dominant economic characteristics, SWOT analysis and weighted competitive
strength analysis, we provide realistic recommendations for Panera. Recommendation 2: Pursue a

flexible with his concepts and the strategy so that he can react as per the situation, which helped

Dale A Jerk Analysis
Dale is a human being, like anyone else. However, he s a bit different from others. He s the kind
of person that cuts in line or the kind that vents his tantrum to his partner. We call these people:
jerks. So is Dale a jerk? A jerk is an individual that is foolish, naive, egotistical, as well as unjust.
Here I ll be explaining the views of Schwitzgebel, Polemarchus, and Thrasymachus of being a
jerk. Schwitzgebel defines a jerk as being ignorant of their self serving tendencies. An example
of this is parking in two spots in a lot, disregarding other people s need to park as well. A jerk
would not know that their selfish actions would affect others, therefore they do not know that
they are a jerk themselves. Not only do they lack attention to other s well being, they also tend to
view other s in a negative light. As Schwitzgebel said, Jerks see the world through goggles that
dim others humanity. Surrounded by fools, creeps, stuck up snobs, smug assholes, and, of course,
jerks, Schwitzgebel associates this view as a jerk s view; as most of the world do not see people
negatively. Thus, Dale s lashing out on his partner and his glares at his neighbors... Show more

Polemarchus speaks of justice in The Republic as someone who helps a friend and does harm to
those who are their enemies, including giving everyone their due (p. 711). Socrates does refute
that it is never right to harm anyone, (p. 713) and it s unjust to render whatever is due to
enemies (p, 711) if they mean to do harm meaning to give back ownership of something a person
had, letting them harm another in the process. As a result, maltreatment and being rude is unjust.
For that reason, being a jerk is unjust as a jerk qualifies as being a rude, self absorbed individual.
Dale fits this description perfectly since he shows many signs of his disregard of others well being
such as taking out his anger onto his partner a sign of not helping a

Marquis de Lafayette Essay
Marquis de Lafayette The Marquis de Lafayette is best remembered for the part he played in the
American War of Independence. He contributed in helping the Americans gain free control over
the colonies by breaking away from British home rule. For sixty years he fought with consistency
and insight for political ideals and social reforms that have dominated the history of the nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries. Hence, Lafayette can be attributed to the spreading of liberty and
freedom throughout America and France. Therefore, he is viewed as a symbol of liberalism in a
once absolutist world. Born on September 6, 1757, Gilbert Montier de Lafayette lived in the

First, he wanted to distinguish himself as a soldier. Second, he detested England and the
English. As victors in the Seven Year s War, the English humiliated France and took away the
French territory in Canada. Being a very proud Frenchman, He wanted to see England get a
beating; he wanted her to lose her American colonies and he had come to help the Americans
win, gain their independence, and lower the pride of the insolent English nation (Woodward 4).
Thus, he sailed in his new boat Victoire onto the shore of South Carolina, along with fourteen
other French army members, with plans in becoming a volunteer officer for the American
revolutionary army. The marquis pursued his ambitions and left his home in secrecy even after
his father in law, the Duc de Noailles, forbid him to leave France. Lafayette s strong will and
excitement to be in charge of an army was too much to hold back. He left his young, pregnant
wife with nothing but a letter saying good bye. Unfortunately, it would be years before he would
make his way back to his homeland again. Ten days after their arrival into Charleston, Lafayette
and the others made their way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the 27th of July and Congress
was still in session. At first, they were rejected and told to go back to France because there were
already plenty of French officers employed in the army. However, after much consideration,

Being Bi-Racial in the Book Desiree s Baby Essay
Being Bi Racial in the Book Desiree s Baby Being bi racial was not an easy thing to be in the
south during the early 1900 s. In the story, Desiree s Baby, many situations occur that leave you
wondering about how society is so unfair. The main characters are Desiree, Armand, the baby,
and Desiree s mother. During this period, some found it acceptable to leave a baby on the
doorsteps of a family to provide a chance for a better life. This was an important point in the
story; when the Monsieur found the baby Desiree near the front gate, it would mean that Desiree
would probably never be aware of her biological parents ancestry. The chance a baby with both
parents would be dropped off is not likely, but was probable with... Show more content on

The death of his mother while living in France when he was eight years old may have had a
negative effect on his character. The way Madame Valmonde described the L Abri as a sad
looking place, which for many years had not known the gentle presence of a mistress , may have
been a hint at Armands evil nature being tied to having no maternal influence during most of his
boyhood. Madame Valmonde noticed the baby s mixed ancestry immediately when she went for
a visit, exclaiming out loud at first sight of him this is not the baby , Desiree thought she was
referring to how big the baby had grown. Madame Valmonde looked closely at the baby and new
that it was indeed of mixed ancestry but did not mention it to her daughter, this I believe was her
way of hoping for the best. Madame Valmonde was wealthy but knew her influence would not be
enough to help if anyone found out the baby was black. This would also mean certain social
destruction for Desiree having given birth to a black child. The environment changed quickly on
the L Abri and Desiree was not aware of the circumstances that had changed it. Her husband had
recognized that the baby was not white and had turned into his old malicious self and was
ignoring his family in vain. One of La Blanche s boys was near the baby when Desiree noticed the
resemblance of the skin color between the boy and her baby. Desiree confronted Armand and asked

A Close Reading Of The Sir Gawain And The Green Knight
A close reading of the Sir Gawain and the Green Knight reveals a very antifeminist view. The
poem, told in four parts, tells of common medieval folklore. The stories seem to be of different
plotlines, but start to intersect in interesting ways that is, the character of Morgan Le Fay begins to
frame the stories together. The half sister of King Arthur, she holds intense hatred for her half
brother and his court. It is her thirst for the downfall of Camelot that makes this character infamous,
and, surprisingly, her success and the strength of her ability that give a bad name to women.
Through the examination of Morgan Le Fays character, it is clear that a successful womanis always
an illusion.
The text blames women for the downfall of men, of society, of common order. It paints the
picture that women are manipulative and that this is how they succeed. This idea first begins
with Morgan Le Fay s appearance early on, where she is not named. Instead, she is described as
an ugly old woman and cast aside until her true power is spoken of almost two thousand lines later.
The effect of this mysterious but harmless introduction, as well as her absence throughout most of
the story, leads to her impression as a manipulative character. It says that the most dangerous
women are those who one would least expect, and that they are always there, always watching,
lying undetected and creating mischief. Later in the story, right before Morgan Le Fay is
introduced by name, is a short

Contingency Theory
INTRODUCTION:
According to Public Administration in Canada, (pg 70) contingency theory is one of the most
recent theories in organizational structure, it argues that there is no one best way of structuring an
organization. Instead contingency theory suggests that the best way to structure a particular
organization is contingent(dependent) on a number of factors such as the attitudes of the managers
and employees, the nature of the task performed by the organization and the nature of the
environment.
The basic premise of Contingency Theory is that there is no one best way to organize a
corporation, to lead a company, or to make decisions. There are too many external and internal
constraints that will alter what really is the best way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The four important ideas of Contingency Theory are:
1. There is no universal or one best way to manage.
2. The design of an organization and its subsystems must fit with the environment.
3. Effective organizations not only have a proper fit with the environment but also between its
subsystems.
4. The needs of an organization are better satisfied when it is properly designed and the management
style is appropriate both to the tasks undertaken and the nature of the work group.
DISCUSSION:
There are too many external and internal constraints that will alter what really is the best way to
lead in a given situation and some examples of such constraints (factors) include: The size of the
organization, how the firm adapts itself to its environment, differences among resources and
operations activities, assumptions of managers about employees, strategies being used, technologies
being used, suppliers and distributors, consumer interest groups, customers and competitors,
government and unions among others which shall be discussed below.
According to the contingency theory, a Theory X manager would not structure an organization in
the same manner as a Theory Y manager. following McGregor, there is a tendency to look at the
Theory X manager as always being the bad

The Cold War And Postmodern Eras
America is often said to envelop in culture of fear. American elites have established this supremacy
by the means of propaganda. From the Cold War to the War on Terror, these elites have maintained
power along with the American
Government to make sure they have control of their consumers. This has been accomplished with
the establishment of an American foreign policy that has helped create a bipolar world. It allows
America to focus on its interest and create a myth that the American people have a destiny to
fulfill in the world. Thus understanding the implications of a foreign policy and use of propaganda
as a way to inject fear into the American society is the tool that would be used during the Cold War
and Postmodern eras. It is then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Cold War was established after World War 2, where tensions between American and the
Soviet Union had created two sides. On March 12, 1947, the Truman Doctrine would establish
the set of ideas for a bipolar world. The Truman Doctrine was America s foreign policy that would
be the building block for America s foreign interests from 1947 1991 (Donaldson pg.35).
According to Andrew Bacevich, an American historian specializing in international relations,
security studies, American foreign policy, and American diplomatic and military history, wrote,
Foreign policy has, for decades, provided an outward manifestation of American domestic
ambitions, urges, and fears (Bacevich pg.5). Foreign policy would be the underlining factor that
would direct America in its conflicts against the Soviet Union. The doctrine was a speech given
by Truman, asking congress for the funding to stop the Communist expansion. Truman wanted to
prevent the domino theory where if one country fell to Communism, the others around it would
soon follow. The Red Scare was already forming even before World War 2 but did not catch on
until the late 40s. The first Red Scare was formed under the bipolar world, which sought to rid
communism from America through labeling. The civil rights movement in 1947 was cut short by
the first Red Scare, as they were labeled as communists (Donaldson pg.17). The elitists would take

Causes And Differences Of Medieval Society In Modern Society
Modern society is inarguably different from medieval communities, quite frankly it would be
terrifying if they were exactly the same. Contemporary culture, in general, is not wholeheartedly
focused on the journey to salvation/ religious causes as was more common in medieval
communities. Communication, technology and education have broadened the scope of human
activity and opportunities. As far as declining religionand social hierarchy, it remains debatable
whether it is a cause or effect of modern technology. Though because humans are creatures of habit
and conservative as far as change, religious tradition and teachings remain embedded in many
communities. Despite similarities based on tradition and inherited values, modern society differs in
driving forces and religious prevalence due to a developed and educated environment.
One of the most obvious differences between the two time periods is the presence of a social
hierarchy. Though it would be naive to say that modern society flourishes with equality and
opportunity for all, equality is at least somewhat attempted by many societies. Medieval
communities justified opportunity difference with what they called the feudal system. This
dictated education and position in regard to other people. Most medieval people believed that
God dictated a person position in society and that is where they were meant to stay, as opposed to
the modern idea of moving up based on merit (or connections). As far as modern people, there is

Islam Is A Progressive Religion
Despite popular assumption, Islam is actually quite a progressive religion. Bioethics are not set in
stone, although some scholars as well as Muslims do have strong opinions about certain bioethical
subjects. In the twentieth century, there was a very limited amount of resources in the field of
Islamic bioethics. The twenty first century has marked an influx in research on Islamic bioethics
from both Muslim religious scholars as well as studies conducted by academic researchers (Ghaly
592). In the field of religious bioethics, there tends to be a significant amount of coverage on
certain topics. In Islamin particular, scholars and the public alike readily discuss abortion and
euthanasia (Brockopp 3). Although Islamic customs emphasize the importance of community,
Islamic theology in general promotes the individual, not communal, salvation. This means that in
many situations, there are guidelines for how one should act, but individual circumstances can
differ therefore warranting a private and individual action. Westerners often overlook this aspect of
Islam, as there are a lot of misconceptions revolving around Islam and the Muslim identity. In this
sense, despite there being general rules or guidelines Muslims tend to adhere to, there is still a
heavy balance between the general rules and individual circumstances; meaning that bioethics can
not be approached from only one view.

The Complex Causes Of The Great War
The Great War is a very complex historical period. This war was based on alliances, new
techniques of war, fronts of combat. The causes of the conflict come from a long time ago, in order
to understand why the happened one must study the context, the background, and the conflicts
between the countries who were implied in this war.
The end of the 19th century was marked by an era in which the great European powers were on
expansive missions, in the conquest of new lands. Colonialism exacerbated the struggle between
European industrial powers in search of territories and markets. Imperialism caused the friction
between the powers to overflow the European framework and take place practically anywhere in

In 1915 and 1916, German submarines sank two ships with American crew, killing dozens of

put at the Tsarskoe Selo Palace at first. In 1918, due to the afraid of rescuing them, they were
sentenced to death on July 16.
The provisional government set up some rights and freedom for citizens, such as freedom of
speech and religion. However, since people still don t have enough food to eat and prices were still
too high, mutinies and strikes happened frequently even after the establishing of the provisional
government. One of the leaders of provisional government, Alexander Kerensky, believes that
Russia should keep fighting in the Great War because it is a national duty. The idea of continuing
fighting with Germany became the main cause of the second revolution.

Dihydroxyphenol Scavenger
SYNTHESIS OF HYDROXYTYROSOL USING CATECHOL PRECURSOR
LITERATURE REVIEW
INTRODUCTION
Polyphenols comprise a large family of compounds that have multiple structural unites of phenol.
These compounds are found in vegetables and fruits, wine, tea, extra virgin olive oil and cocoa, and
exhibit strong antioxidant activity by scavenging different families of Reactive Oxygen Species
(ROS)1. The main phenolic compounds identified in olive oils include hydroxytyrosol (HT),
tyrosol (TY), secoiridioxide and ligands3, 4.
Hydroxytyrosol, 2 (3,4 dihydroxyphenoyl) ethanol, a simple phenol found predominantly in olive
tree (Olea europaea), is one of the most effective member of the polyphenol family1,2, because of
its marked antioxidant activity, its capacity to impede low density (LDL) oxidation, platelet
aggregation and endothelial cell activation and it protection against DNA damage3,4,5.
Hydroxytyrosol has been proven to be a potent scavenger of superoxide anion and hydroxy
radical6,7,8, and owing to its antioxidant and radical scavenging properties, Hydroxytyrosol has a
wide range of biological effects. Hydroxytyrosol (Figure 1) exerts its antioxidant activity by
transforming itself into a catechol quinone and it is more active than antioxidant vitamins and
synthetic antioxidants10. HT is a metabolite of oleuropein, another major phenolic compound of ...

Six Women Of Salem Book Review
Yasmin Valdez 11/23/15 History 1302 Book Review Six Women of Salem Book Review, By
Marilyne K. Roach Marilynne K. Roach is a resident of Watertown, Massachusetts. She went on
to graduate with a BFA from MCA (Massachusetts College of Art) but she uniquely gives credit
to the public library systems for the rest of her education. This is very interesting to me because
she says that libraries are what she owes to her education to. Because of all the books she reads
she later turns out to be a great book writer herself. The library system really did impact
Marilynne s life drastically. But besides illustrating other writers work in history she also has
written and illustrated many books of her own, this including Six Women of Salem . Before I
read this book, heard, or even much less understood the history behind the Salem witch trails in
my History or English classes, I really didn t know much about the history of these horrible events
that condemned a lot of innocent women to death. In, Six Women of Salem by, Marilynne K.
Roach she does three major things that make her book extraordinary. First, her interesting style of
writing skillfully strengthens the envelope of time in the book. Second, Roach masterfully
answers any questions the reader or I may have or had about these Witch Trails. Third, K. Roach
successfully illustrates to her readers the story of these horrid trials. In the stories of the six
women, Roach helps us grasp events of the trials in the conditions

Organic Food Saves Health
Organic food saves health?
Kip Pester, the author of the In Organic We Trust movie, suggests that people have to use organic
food, because it is healthier, and it has more nutrients. It is made in a natural environment, and
organic food is without pesticides. Organic food is healthier food; this gives a better health, and
gives better quality. Organic foods have more nutrients. His interview and film is effective in
convincing people that organic food is better for them. His film information is very good and
helpful, but in contrast, he is not a researcher or a scientist.
Organic food is more expensive than regular food items. The farm machinery needed to harvest
organic food is more specialized, and therefore the food is more expensive. They use the best
tools and fertilization supplies. The farmers create natural environments. Organic food is grown
without pesticides. Nowadays, people are using organic food broadly. The author gives lot
information about organic food, and how it works. Regular food is made with lot of pesticides,
and it is effect on humans. Nowadays people have cancer, more pesticides effect on IQ. 73%
people used organic food, and that is good.
The farmers of organic food have to certify, or evaluate by government organization, USDA (United
States Department of Agriculture). Organic certification is a certification process of producing
organic food that must needed. The farmers can not use any chemical solution, such as pesticides,
and fertilizers.

A Split Between People During The World
Division within Pacific Rim During times of crisis, there is still a division. This division is the
idea of a split between people during an apocalypse. This idea is known as Marxism. Marxism is
the analysis between the working class, which is the majority of the population, and the rich
class, which is the minority of the population. Marxism is used to analyze history through social
and economical views to better understand about the differences in the world. A prime example
of Marxism is the movie Pacific Rim. Pacific Rim is a monster story that shows humanity pitting
against monsters known as Kaijus. Humans of this movie united together to make Jaegers in
order to get rid of the Kaijus. Fighting these monsters is shown as an apocalypse, however
during these times, we can still see a split between people. Through the lens of Marxism, Pacific
Rim portrays it through the social hierarchy and lifestyle of people within the community during
an apocalypse. The working class which is the majority of the population must work to make a
living. Without work, they will not be able to stay alive during the apocalypse. Throughout
Pacific Rim, workers must work hard in order to stay alive. At the beginning of the movie,
Raleigh was a pilot for the Jaeger (Pacific Rim). After tragic events, Raleigh was forced to quit
being a pilot and went to work for building the wall (Pacific Rim). Yeah a man in my
position....travels with the wall, chasing shifts to make a living (Pacific Rim).

Change In Romanesque Churches
When the ideas behind a something change, how it is represented changes too. For the catholic
church, there was a change in people s thoughts about God. A new idea about the nature of God
became popular, that God is love, light, and all things good. People also began to think of the
church as the house of God, so it must be worthy. The view of God as light meant that there
should be a lot of light, natural light, in the church. This means a lot of windows. Windows were
placed around the sanctuary, and altar areas. This is the place where communion, is held, and
the effect on people coming into the church would have been awe inspiring. At certain times the
sanctuary would have been glowing. The large stained glass windows also served as what is
often called the poor man s bible , even if the church was one of the most expensive buildings in
the area. The emphasis on natural light, as opposed to an increase in candels, was based on the
idea that God s beauty... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It followed the train of thought that nature, the geometry of nature is perfect, and God has made
that perfect, so his house, AKA the church, should imitate that perfection. This caused the increase
in geometric shapes found in nature to be found in the church. Triangles can be found in the arched
windows and door, Circles in the Rose stained glass window. Symmetry was also very important.
The cause of such a heavy emphasis on light, and symmetry was because of something St Aquinas
said ad pulchritudinem tria requiruntur which means that the beauty of the three required. The
three being integrity, right proportion or harmony, and bright or vividness. If the church were to be

Little girl recalled how fairy tales showed her that if her attitude changes and stays positive that
her chances of succeeding is higher. This teaches the little girl that she does not need anything
else, but the conviction belief that she can accomplish this task. According to the Bettelheim,
children use modern stories to escape reality and go into a fantasy world that gives them
temporary relief. Since the story was not a fairytale, it left the girl off with no hope for getting
better in the future. Not only do fairy tales help children develop, but it also gives them hope.
Bettelheim demonstrates through another scenario how fairytale gave a little girl hope in sense
of her difficult situation. The little girl used Rapunzel as a way to relate her situation with the
main character. While reading she figures out that her prince in real life will eventually save her
like it happened in the story, giving her hope to keep going according to Bettelheim. That story
of hope was sustained until that little girl grew up and got married eventually not needing it
anymore, but she was using it more as a safety blanket. She would only use the fairytale in time of
need. Maria Tatar points out how these stories help shape individuals at a young age. She explores
how children reading these stories and using imagination can uncover fears and desires they have.
But these fairy tales do not only have a good influence on children, but also

Analysis Of White Kids

Appropriative Identities in Youth Culture
In Mary Bucholtz book White Kids, she discusses the stature of whiteness in the United States as
hegemonic, unmarked, and culturally absent, making it situational and unstable. Bucholtz suggests
that to counteract that, the students she studied in her field work adopted many different identities
and identifiers, such as levels of popularity and racial backgrounds, the use of language, and the
physical styles with one chooses to present.
One identifying marker the students use is slang. Linguists define slang as a youth dominated,
rapidly changing lexicon associated with casual social contexts, but a nonlinguistic view frames
slang as an illegitimate linguistic variety. The latter definition is inaccurate because these varieties
have strict grammatical rules and are only illegitimate to the uneducated eye. Furthermore, calling
slang illegitimate is disrespectful because it disregards the users of such language as inferior,
therefore rendering them powerless. This disrespect is often aimed at the African American
community, whose usage of AAVE is highly stigmatized. Slang, as a whole, is a shared youth
identity in that everyone regardless of race or social status uses it; however, much of slang is
available only to a certain group of people. Slang can be involved in processes of adequation or
distinction, making its usage contentious or socially risky depending on what person used

Powder second harmonic generating (SHG) measurements of polycrystalline material 2 were

switched Nd:YAG laser, operating at 20 Hz, was used for the measurements. Because the SHG
efficiency has been shown to depend strongly on the particle size, polycrystalline samples were
ground and sieved (Newark Wire Cloth Co.) into distinct particle size ranges (20 45, 45 63, 63 75,
75 90, 90 125, 125 150, 150 200, 200 250, 250 Ојm). To make relevant comparisons with the
known SHG materials, crystalline О± SiO2 and LiNbO3 were also ground and sieved into the
same particle size ranges. Powders with the particle size in the range 45 63 Вµm were used for
comparing the SHG intensities. All the powder samples with different particle sizes were placed
in separate capillary tubes. No index matching fluid was used in any of the experiments. The SHG
light, i.e., 532 nm green light, was collected in reflection and detected using a photomultiplier tube

The Modern Day System Of International Commerce
Introduction
The modern day system of international commerce has developed over roughly 200 years. Much
until about the end of the eighteenth century it was most unlikely to transact export trade as it is
today because of lack of technological infrastructure. The important legal framework which would
have made for the use of the bill of lading as a document of transfer was lacking. Today much of
the world s tonnage is transacted under cif contracts which debuted about 150 years ago.
In international trade, the sales contract is the heart of an export import transaction. It is however,
always supported by several other related contracts, reflecting the complexity of the transaction and
number of parties involved. Basic among these ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is because most of the statements as to the passing of risk under fob are as regards whether
goods are on board/loaded or not. They essentially do not deal with the constraint of damage or
loss of goods during loading. In Pyrene Co. Ltd v Scindia Navigation Co. Ltd a fire tender sold
fob London previously was damaged through the fault of the carrier while being carried onboard.
This damage in question occurred prior to the tender crossing the rail and the question that arose
was whether the shipowner was entitled to limit his liability as under the Hague Rules . If risk
doesn t pass at the beginning of the loading, when does it then pass? Is it when the goods move
across the rail or when goods are loaded onboard? Devlin J pointed out in Pyrene thus; The division
of loading into two parts are suited to more antiquated methods of loading than are now generally

Skepticism About The External World
Skepticism about the external world is one of the most widely discussed arguments in the history
of philosophy. Barry Stroud defines skepticism as the idea that we cannot have knowledge about
the external world (Stroud, page 1). This conclusion is the result of Rene Descartes Dream
Argument and has been a topic of discussion ever since. No matter how we attack the argument, it
seems that we inevitably arrive at skepticism. In this paper, I will argue that the skeptical
conclusion is true and why it seems to be compelling as a necessary condition for knowledge. I
will describe the Dream Argument and take a look at Moore s promising response to the
conclusion as an inconsistent proof. In the end, Moore s argument for evidence of an external
world will fail to disprove the skeptical conclusion due to its lack of justified belief. Although I am
intuitively inclined to deny the skeptical argument, I cannot logically do so but will argue against
full blown skepticism and explain how mild skepticism is a more approachable route to
knowledge. In our everyday conversation, we do not generally question the validity of small claims
that we make during normal interactions. In Meditation 1, Descartes decides that it is the right time
to reevaluate the foundation of knowledge that he will rest his life upon from that point forward.
He puts in question the things that he thinks he knows for certain. He acknowledges that everything
he knows has been perceived from the senses or through

problem #1 and problem #2, respectively, we can see the obvious differences between the optimal
stocking quantity and daily expected profit figures.
| Stocking Quantity| Daily Expected Profit| 1| 584| 331.44| 2| 685| 371.33|
The stocking quantity and expected profits are higher in the second scenario because of the extra
time spent to improve the quality of profile section. By spending the extra time to improve the
profile section, Anna Sheen increased the overall quality of her newspaper, which will, most likely,
lead to an increased probability of demand for her newspaper around the area. This increased
demand will raise Anna Sheen s stocking quantity and the daily expected profits that are associated
with that individual stocking quantity.

Smith Pharmaceuticals is one of these corporations. Over several years, they spent hundreds of
millions of dollars on research perfecting the method to synthesize and analyze cDNA
complementary DNA in the genes LIF and LCK. Mutations in these two genes, as Smith

a patent on these genes and the process of the diagnostic test, and has since benefited over one

due to its rights over the information it gathers and, important to note, it would not have done so
without this financial motivation. Otherwise, it is highly plausible that LIF and LCK s benefits

The Effect Of Weight Lifting And Its Effects On Basketball...
Weight Lifting and Its Effects on Basketball Players
Ten people gather around a center point waiting as two giants square off between one another,
clashing for the most valuable prize of the battle ahead: the basketball. A game of strategy and high
demands, basketball calls on both the body and the mind in harmony in order to secure a victory. It
calls on your body in many ways that will strip you of energy unlike any other sport. Additionally,
the game will demand a high intelligence and acumen from the mind when making split second
decisions. Lifting weights can positively impact your body, physically and mentally; furthermore,
this training can then be applied onto the basketball court to help increase the physical and mental
attributes of a player. Being well equipped physically for basketball provides many advantages
when you apply it correctly. Basketball is a unique sport that contains non stop movement in
every moment. The objective is simple: score more points than the other team. This is
accomplished by a constant burst of speed, agility, and quickness that combines for fluid
motions up and down the court. If a player is not trained properly, this consistent activity can be
extremely strenuous to their body. Plus, in a game of basketball the gameplay is live until the
ball goes out of bounds, there is a foul, timeout called, or the end of a quarter. While this may
seem like quite a few factors to allow a dead ball and some rest time, they do not occur as much

Essay On Self Destruction In Macbeth
Macbeth s Self Destruction Henry Longfellow once said ambition is so powerful a passion in the
human breast, that however high we reach we are never satisfied. This is displayed throughout the
story of Macbeth. Macbeth is so overcome with ambition that he will do anything to reach his
destiny, and ultimately craves more power than he can achieve. Macbeth s blurred perception of
ambition costs many innocent lives and inevitably leads to his own self destruction. At the
beginning of the play, Macbeth meets three witches who reveal a prophecy to him that foreshadows
his rise to power. The witches approach Macbeth and chant all hail, Macbeth! That shalt be king
hereafter implying that Macbeth is going to become king (I.iii.52).... Show more content on

The night of the murder, Macbeth hosts Duncan an extravagant party. During the party Macbeth
is clearly distraught, and cannot keep his intentions private. Lady Macbeth eventually stops him
and reveals to him that his face may read strange matters (I.v.53 54). Lady Macbeth is so intent
on Macbeth becoming king that she is even coaching Macbeth on how to hide his intentions
during the party. Towards the end of the party Macbeth removes himself because he cannot find
any good reason to why he is going to kill Duncan other than Vaulting ambition (I.vi.25 28). Once
Macbeth begins to question his motives, Lady Macbeth is right there to push him back again.
Lady Macbeth coerces Macbeth to follow through, which is another aspect of his downfall, he
allows his wife to make the decisions for him. Macbeth furthers his self destruction by
participating in multiple murders of innocent persons. Despite Macbeth questioning his motives
behind killing Duncan, Lady Macbeth was able to convince him otherwise. Late in the night
Macbeth goes to Duncan and murders him. When Macbeth returns to his wife he tells her I have
done the deed but he fears that Duncan s servants may have heard what he had done (II.ii.14).
Lady Macbeth also fears the servants heard something so she goes and kills them once Macbeth
returns. As Macbeth s power craze increases, he decides that his once good

Reflection On Pleasures And Wisdom
Ecclesiastes 2:1 26 says that pleasures and wisdom are meaningless, because everything is
meaningless without Christ in our lives. Solomon tried to pursue fulfillment through pleasure,
wealth, and fame. He was letting his own interests control him, not doing what God has planned for
him. Using only our human wisdomwouldn t get us far in life; we would only come across more
obstacles that we can t overcome on our own. Without God s guidance and wisdom, we would
live an interest centered life that only fulfills our personal interests, unlike a Christ centered life.
In a Christ centered life, we put our faith in God and trust that He knows what is best for us, and
therefore do everything according to His plan. Solomon felt that pleasure, wisdom, folly, foil, and
everything is meaningless because he didn t put God first. He put his interests first and could only
fulfill his As he attempted to draw satisfaction purely out of his pleasure, he realized that without
God nothing can be fulfilled, and experienced many obstacles on his way.
Through the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14 30, we learn that we should not be lazy,
because God created us to work for Him and serve wholeheartedly. Unlike the third steward, we
need to work to fulfill God s plan for us and serve God with all our hearts. What matters the most
is that we need to have full commitment to being faithful and wise stewards to God, and doing
what He has planned for us before we were even born. Talents are the

Advantages Of All Inclusive Resort
What causes this strategy for country s economy?
Cultural economic socД±al environmental problems
For travelers, the easiest and noticeable criticism of all inclusive resorts is that spending almost
whole holiday in the resort, therefore, almost no one gets much real culture connection with the
natives.
However, the all inclusive resorts do no really support the economy of the local suppliers so and if
we consider why we have tourism business, it conflicts with the terms because, tourism is meant to
support the country.
In the Antalya, some local hotel workers feel the jobs provided for the local workers by all
inclusive hotels are better than the other offers. However, this is usually far from the reality in the
majority of cases. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Putting thousands of people at the same place is not ethical for nature because everything have
capacity so exceeding natural capacity is not ethical for us. It means that all inclusive resorts incent
people to stay same places at the same time so they defraud other people to exceeding natural
capacity. Although they often host a lot of visitors than their psychical capacity, from a per capita
perspective it is not environmentally friendly to manage the impact of tourists in one place using
appropriate systems and technology than it is if visitors are scatter throughout a destination in little
pockets of temporary luxury living.
Disadvantages of All Inclusive Vacations? Feeling Trapped
Some tourists may feel like they cannot leave the resort because they have already paid for the
services, such as food beverage and entertainment. In this case, they will be missing out on trying
the authentic cuisine or to absorb the traditional culture. If the package doesn t include tours of the
local attractions, they will spend some money to hire a taxi and a tour guide.

Analysis Of Kiki s Delivery Service
Kiki s Delivery Service (1989: Hayao Miyazaki) revolves around a young girl named Kiki who
leaves her home with her talking cat familiar Jiji in order to hone her skills as a witch, but has
difficulties to find her place in a new town while running an air courier service. Overall the
movie focuses on tradition vs. modernity as well as the problems a young person can face while
first living independently. I will be analysing the mise en scene and cinematography in the scene
when Kiki first arrives in the town that she will call home. The scene starts with an over the
shoulder establishing shot of the town that Kiki will be staying in, this is done to give the
audience an idea about the size of the place and also allows us to see the town from Kiki s
perspective imposing but exciting. After this we see a low angle sot looking up at Kiki as she
flies over the ocean, she is laughing and yelling while flying her broom which connotates that
she is having fun, this is done to create a contrast later in the scene where she is flying very
formally to try and make a good impression. Another reason the ocean is used in this part is that
the colour blue is used to represent calmness and serenity. Moreover, as with most Miyazaki
movies flight represents the greatest form of freedom, therefore the shots of Kiki flying over the
ocean while enjoying herself is used as a contrast to later in the movie when Kiki feeling trapped
by her own feeling of inadequacy. In addition, a crabbing

Cover Letter and Resume Analysis Paper
My analysis paper will cover all of the changes and how I have made my cover letter and resume
improve in the past two weeks.
Cover Letter
My cover letter started off a little rocky at first. I was new to the whole cover letter so I reviewed
a few different cover letters until I got the idea. After I got my draft back with the comments to
improve my cover letter I knew I had a lot of work to do. The first change I started to work on was
my skills mentioned in my second paragraph. I had many of my skills listed but none of them
showed how this related to the job I was applying for. Once I decided on the new skills I was going

adding examples into my cover letter to show the company how I have applied my skills in
many different ways to adding transitions into my paper to make it flow better then to making my
resume more visually appealing. My cover letter and resume has come a long way in the past
week and a half and I have learned so much in each step of the way in this process to making them
both great.

Characteristics Of Edgar Allan Poe An Unreliable Narrator
Edgar Allen Poe And His Unreliable Narrators Edgar Allen Poe is an extremely well known
horror/gothic genre poet and author. He often uses an unreliable narrator in his stories. An
unreliable narrator is a narrator that constantly switches his or her stories or attempts to justify
wrong doing. Two of this are in two of Poe s greatest works The Tell Tale Heart and The Raven.
The Tell Tale Heart is a short story about how the narrator copes with the murder of an old man.
The narrator is unreliable because he attempts to justify the killing of the old man but murder is
unjustifiable and he gives blank reasoning. The Raven. is a poem about how the narrator is
constantly reminded of how the haunting feeling of his wife s death will never leave him. The
author is unreliable because his anger intensity fluctuated throughout the altercation with the
raven. Some characteristics of an unreliable narrator are: Deranged, Insane, or they have a
mental issue. Poe often shows these character in his two great works stated earlier, The Tell Tale
Heart and The Raven. Poe is a skilled author when utilizing an unreliable narrator show insanity.
One representation of this is in his short story The Tell Tale Heart. Like stated previously in the
story the narrator tries to prove himself innocent in the short story by giving lousy excuses as to
why he killed the man. He tries multiple times to find a reason to sway us towards his side in the
story. On page one he exclaims, Yes,

Filibuster In The Senate Essay
Christian Sandoval PA 200 4/2/2016 Filibuster In the Senate The US Constitution created the
simple format of Majority Rule and Minority right. The minority has the right to express their
beliefs, it is the majority that creates the legislation. However, the minority s has the power of
filibustering and the ability to block legislation. In the video by Moyers Company the video talks
about the subject of how the rules of filibuster in the senate have changed throughout the years and
the different senate majorities have made those different changes. Filibusters create partisanship

The majority party is not able to be as powerful with their choices and ideology as they want.
This allows for all parties and hopefully all of the population a rather equal representation in the
government. It works as a check and balance to the House of Representatives who has overruled
the use of the filibuster. The reason being that a bill passed by the House must also go through the
Senate. The filibuster is a tool not to just be thrown around lightly by the minority party ,however,
because at some point on down the line they will be the majority party and it could come back to
hurt them. A lot of the time an actual filibuster does not have to be used by the minority however.
The threat of the filibuster is sometimes enough to get the job done. Although there have being
propositions to change the filibuster rules in order to make them a burden on the filibustering
speaker in the long run when the ruling party changes to minority it can be troublesome for them.
Few years back Senator Reid from Nevada wanted to make changes to the filibustering tactics this
tactic as it applies to executive nominees but, because next time Republicans are in charge there are
no guarantees that they would restrict themselves in this

England in 1819 Essay
England in 1819 Great poetry is great not because of what it says but because of how it is
phrased. Few poems say anything that is very profound; instead, the best of them use language
in novel, memorable, and effective ways. Certainly this is true of Percy Bysshe Shelley s
famous sonnet England in 1819. In this poem Shelley describes the depressing, dark, and dirty
state of affairs caused in Britain by political, social, and spiritual corruption. However, this poem
would not be nearly as effective if it were not for Shelley s powerful use of such classic rhetorical
devices as adjectives, alliteration, assonance, imagery, irony, lists, themes, and verbs. One device
that Shelley employs very potently is the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
3); graves and may (l. 13). Such use of assonance gives the poem rhythm and makes it more
beautiful. [VERY NICE] A fourth device that Shelley makes use of is imagery. The poem is full
of such description and figureS of speech. Shelley uses many violent images, such as the
leechlike (l. 5) image of a king who sucks the blood out of his countrymen. The king is blind in
blood (l. 6), the blood of his own people. If it was not enough that the king sucks the blood out of
his countrymen, BUT he also HAS starved and stabbed (l. 7) them. All these images function
together to describe a horrible king who ignores the needs of his people and sends them out to
fight his war. [VERY GOOD] A fifth method that Shelley brings to bear is irony. The poem is
very negative, and the whole atmosphere implies that the king would lead his country to total
ruin. The irony in the poem is that the destruction of England leads to a new beginning with hope.
Shelley ends his poem by saying that Time s worst statute, unrepealed/ Are graves from which a
glorious Phantom may/ Burst, to illumine our tempestuous day (ll. 12 14). The positive idea of a
new beginning is ironic because it is in such sharp contrast to the death and destruction presented
earlier in the poem. [VERY GOOD] A sixth strategy that Shelley brings his attention to is listing.
Already in the first line, five adjectives are listed to describe the king.

Relationship Between Vasopressin And Taste Processing
Vasopressin and visual processing The association between Arginine vasopressin and visual
processing is one of the least studied regions when it comes to AVP and sensory integration links
although many visual inputs enter brain regions which are comprised of vasopressin receptors. One
of the few studies that research this link includes an exploration of visual opsin sequences in
diverse vertebrate animals. The researchers claimed that the visual opsins and AVP receptors are
located together in the same genomic region(130). For instance, in chickens, it was claimed that a
visual opsin was sharing a genomic region with AVT in the neurons. Nonetheless, even though the
other functions of opsins besides the visual ones are still unknown, a study performed in Japan
hypothesize that the pigments are permitting the neurons to react to light and contribute with
coordination of behavior (Bester et al. 2015). Vasopressin and Taste processing

One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich was written by Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Solzhenitsyn was
born on December 11th, 1918 in Kislovodsk, Russia. He was 89 when he died on August 3rd 2008.
Solzhenitsyn based the book on the World War 2 period, particularly the famous labour camps for
prisoners in Germany and East Prussia known as gulags . Life in the gulags were tough due to the
gulags being open aired and given the sub zero temperatures, survival was difficult. Solzhenitsyn, in
this book, describes the difficulty of life in the gulag, full of brutality, hard manual labour, sub zero
temperatures, the disgusting food rationed to the prisoners and survival. Only people who are able
to cope with the conditions and manage the system can hope to survive. I chose the novel One day

Socrates As A Wise Man
Nowadays the word wisdom is an influential quality to possess as society accepts and review

time of now we deem Socrates as a man who challenge the concept of philosophy. As Socrates
encounters the true meaning of wisdom he came upon his death penalty for spreading his
interpretations.A man that ought to be admire for the way he glance the world, was rejected by
society for reasons that was irrelevant to his purpose.
Socrates would spend his quality time in the village questioning anyone about practically anything
to gain knowledge for both parties. As he knew that the Oracle of Delphi defined him as a wise
person he did not consider himself wise, so he went on a quest to find wisdom. He practice a
socratic method while discussing with Athenians. The method describes a formal conversation
between person A and person B, as person A discuss the meaning of a concept, person B continues
to ask questions to prove that person A s interpretation is not valid. The method is a realization for
person A to notice the failure of the answer he provided. An example from The Consolations of

  • 2. Conformity In Kurt Vonnegut s Harrison Bergeron American actress Emma Stone once said, What sets you apart can sometimes feel like a burden and it s not. And a lot of the time, it s what makes you great. . This quote could represent the message conveyed in Kurt Vonnegut Jr. s dystopian story Harrison Bergeron . In his piece, he creates the setting of the world in the year 2081, where everyone has become equal and nobody is different. Whether it be strengths, talents, disabilities, or intelligence, everyone has become identical to one another, except for the main character Harrison Bergeron, who was arrested and taken away by the government at the age of fourteen for being a nonconformist. After breaking out of prison, he shows the world what it is like to be unique, until he is, unfortunately,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When describing the like minded people and their actions throughout Harrison Bergeron , Vonnegut uses very elementary and short sentences. After discounting their son s death, George and Hazel Bergeron continue with their mediocre and regulated lives, when George hears a ringing obscurity in his ear. Hazel then responds to him, saying, Gee I could tell that one was a doozy, said Hazel. You can say that again, said George. Gee said Hazel, I could tell that one was a doozy. (Vonnegut 6). Vonnegut utilizes these short sentences to portray how simple everyone has become in this dystopian future. Consequently, the civilians seem to have no diversity; however, when construing Harrison Bergeron s actions and the actions of the nonconforming ballerinas, the author uses more complex and more involved sentence lengths. In the story, Vonnegut describes the ballerinas as they dance together with Harrison, stating, Harrison and his Empress merely listened to the music for a while listened gravely, as though synchronizing their heartbeats with it. They shifted their weights to their toes. Harrison placed his big hands on the girl s tiny waist, letting her sense the weightlessness that would soon be hers. And then, in an explosion of joy and grace, into the air they sprang! Not only were the laws of the land abandoned, but the law of gravity and the laws of motion as well. They reeled, whirled, swiveled, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. South Korea Research Paper The sociocultural role of sport in the country, including any political implications South Korea loves sport, sport is not only a popular physical activity but is a significant social practice. Sport operates as an important cultural resource and produces and disseminates nationalism. Indeed, in recent years, south korea has shown competence in hosting, playing, and managing sport. South Korean athletes have created notable results at major international sport events. For example, since 1984, the national Summer Olympic team has unfailingly been ranked in the top 10 nations on the medal table, with the only exception being the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. The country has also produced a number of major world sporting events, including hosting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This has had profound implications in the development of Korean society. Soon after the liberation from Japan in 1945, the peninsula was sectioned into two parts and 5 years later, civil war broke out in 1950. This war ended in 1953 without a peace treaty, which means the two countries still technically are at war. More than 50 years of division has influenced the culture and national opinions of the Korean people. The two Koreas see each other as political and military enemies, but they also see themselves as an ethnically homogenous nation. So there is a strong desire on both sides of the fence to reunify so that a unified Korean nation state can be created. The reunification of the nation is one of the largest political projects in both South and North Korea. This ethnic nationalism allows for occasional cooperation between the two countries such as North Korea and South Korea marching together for the 2000 Sydney Olympics, 2004 Athens Olympics and 2006 Turin Olympics. Sport in Korea has reflected these complicated relations. International competitions created a symbolic battlefield between the two countries, at least until the 1980s. North and South Korean governments invested heavily in developing skilled athletes and funded part of the development of high performance sport in order to win more medals in international games. • 4. Witches Role In Macbeth Essay In Macbeth , written by William Shakespeare, the three witches play a crucial role in the play, influencing: the characters, the plot, and themes. They could be regarded as a backbone in the construct in the play as without these characters, the plot would be entirely dissimilar. During the course of Macbeth, the weird sisters brought about a supernatural element in the play whilst swaying the characters actions (mainly Macbeth) and, engaging the attention of the audience. The witches absence would mean the absence of the supernatural theme of the play. In Macbeth , the supernatural is an integral part of the plot s structure and is a key aspect in making the play interesting. It provided an acceleration for action, an insight into the character, and increased the impact of many key scenes. The supernatural appeared to the audience in many varied forms not only as the weird sisters, but also a floating dagger, and prophetic apparition. The use of this element first occurred at the commencement of Macbeth , when the three witches revealed their prophecies and gave the audience an idea of what was yet to come. It was only after this encounter, that Macbeth felt ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These elements were inclusive of sexual innuendo, violence and the supernatural. The company grew and between the 1980 s and 1990 s became the top bakery cafГ© operated company. Ron Shaich, along with fellow team members traveled around the country studying different fast food markets. Catering would expand the kinds of buyers (ex. 1) such as business, families, schools, which would grow Panera s market segment rapidly. Consumer s preferences are constantly changing in this industry (ex. 3). Offering more services, such as catering, is a way to catch the consumers interest. With a growth rate of 26 percent in 2010 for Panera s catering proves that a new segment is being targeted. Panera needs to reach more consumers through advertising, commercials, and incentives. We recommend Panera starts with the health factor as our analysis indicates in the SWOT analysis of opportunities (ex. 10). Panera s catering should also market incentives. If consumers have an incentive, such as first order 20% off, they would be more willing to try new restaurants. The online Panera catering website will grow the market segment because technology is rapidly growing and more and more competitors will expand to forming a internet presence. In order to meet financial objective of 15 to 20 percent we recommend taking these steps to capitalize on catering. With the help of the key success factors, driving forces, dominant economic characteristics, SWOT analysis and weighted competitive strength analysis, we provide realistic recommendations for Panera. • 7. Dale A Jerk Analysis Dale is a human being, like anyone else. However, he s a bit different from others. He s the kind of person that cuts in line or the kind that vents his tantrum to his partner. We call these people: jerks. So is Dale a jerk? A jerk is an individual that is foolish, naive, egotistical, as well as unjust. Here I ll be explaining the views of Schwitzgebel, Polemarchus, and Thrasymachus of being a jerk. Schwitzgebel defines a jerk as being ignorant of their self serving tendencies. An example of this is parking in two spots in a lot, disregarding other people s need to park as well. A jerk would not know that their selfish actions would affect others, therefore they do not know that they are a jerk themselves. Not only do they lack attention to other s well being, they also tend to view other s in a negative light. As Schwitzgebel said, Jerks see the world through goggles that dim others humanity. Surrounded by fools, creeps, stuck up snobs, smug assholes, and, of course, jerks, Schwitzgebel associates this view as a jerk s view; as most of the world do not see people negatively. Thus, Dale s lashing out on his partner and his glares at his neighbors... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Polemarchus speaks of justice in The Republic as someone who helps a friend and does harm to those who are their enemies, including giving everyone their due (p. 711). Socrates does refute that it is never right to harm anyone, (p. 713) and it s unjust to render whatever is due to enemies (p, 711) if they mean to do harm meaning to give back ownership of something a person had, letting them harm another in the process. As a result, maltreatment and being rude is unjust. For that reason, being a jerk is unjust as a jerk qualifies as being a rude, self absorbed individual. Dale fits this description perfectly since he shows many signs of his disregard of others well being such as taking out his anger onto his partner a sign of not helping a ... • 8. Marquis de Lafayette Essay Marquis de Lafayette The Marquis de Lafayette is best remembered for the part he played in the American War of Independence. He contributed in helping the Americans gain free control over the colonies by breaking away from British home rule. For sixty years he fought with consistency and insight for political ideals and social reforms that have dominated the history of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Hence, Lafayette can be attributed to the spreading of liberty and freedom throughout America and France. Therefore, he is viewed as a symbol of liberalism in a once absolutist world. First, he wanted to distinguish himself as a soldier. Second, he detested England and the English. As victors in the Seven Year s War, the English humiliated France and took away the French territory in Canada. Being a very proud Frenchman, He wanted to see England get a beating; he wanted her to lose her American colonies and he had come to help the Americans win, gain their independence, and lower the pride of the insolent English nation (Woodward 4). Thus, he sailed in his new boat Victoire onto the shore of South Carolina, along with fourteen other French army members, with plans in becoming a volunteer officer for the American revolutionary army. The marquis pursued his ambitions and left his home in secrecy even after his father in law, the Duc de Noailles, forbid him to leave France. Lafayette s strong will and excitement to be in charge of an army was too much to hold back. He left his young, pregnant wife with nothing but a letter saying good bye. Unfortunately, it would be years before he would make his way back to his homeland again. Ten days after their arrival into Charleston, Lafayette and the others made their way to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the 27th of July and Congress was still in session. At first, they were rejected and told to go back to France because there were already plenty of French officers employed in the army. However, after much consideration, congress ... In the story, Desiree s Baby, many situations occur that leave you wondering about how society is so unfair. The main characters are Desiree, Armand, the baby, and Desiree s mother. During this period, some found it acceptable to leave a baby on the doorsteps of a family to provide a chance for a better life. This was an important point in the story; when the Monsieur found the baby Desiree near the front gate, it would mean that Desiree would probably never be aware of her biological parents ancestry. The death of his mother while living in France when he was eight years old may have had a negative effect on his character. The way Madame Valmonde described the L Abri as a sad looking place, which for many years had not known the gentle presence of a mistress , may have been a hint at Armands evil nature being tied to having no maternal influence during most of his boyhood. Madame Valmonde noticed the baby s mixed ancestry immediately when she went for a visit, exclaiming out loud at first sight of him this is not the baby , Desiree thought she was referring to how big the baby had grown. Madame Valmonde looked closely at the baby and new that it was indeed of mixed ancestry but did not mention it to her daughter, this I believe was her way of hoping for the best. Madame Valmonde was wealthy but knew her influence would not be enough to help if anyone found out the baby was black. This would also mean certain social destruction for Desiree having given birth to a black child. The environment changed quickly on the L Abri and Desiree was not aware of the circumstances that had changed it. • 12. A Close Reading Of The Sir Gawain And The Green Knight A close reading of the Sir Gawain and the Green Knight reveals a very antifeminist view. The poem, told in four parts, tells of common medieval folklore. The stories seem to be of different plotlines, but start to intersect in interesting ways that is, the character of Morgan Le Fay begins to frame the stories together. The half sister of King Arthur, she holds intense hatred for her half brother and his court. It is her thirst for the downfall of Camelot that makes this character infamous, and, surprisingly, her success and the strength of her ability that give a bad name to women. Through the examination of Morgan Le Fays character, it is clear that a successful womanis always an illusion. The text blames women for the downfall of men, of society, of common order. It paints the picture that women are manipulative and that this is how they succeed. This idea first begins with Morgan Le Fay s appearance early on, where she is not named. Instead, she is described as an ugly old woman and cast aside until her true power is spoken of almost two thousand lines later. The effect of this mysterious but harmless introduction, as well as her absence throughout most of the story, leads to her impression as a manipulative character. It says that the most dangerous women are those who one would least expect, and that they are always there, always watching, lying undetected and creating mischief. Later in the story, right before Morgan Le Fay is introduced by name, is a short ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Contingency Theory INTRODUCTION: According to Public Administration in Canada, (pg 70) contingency theory is one of the most recent theories in organizational structure, it argues that there is no one best way of structuring an organization. Instead contingency theory suggests that the best way to structure a particular organization is contingent(dependent) on a number of factors such as the attitudes of the managers and employees, the nature of the task performed by the organization and the nature of the environment. The basic premise of Contingency Theory is that there is no one best way to organize a corporation, to lead a company, or to make decisions. There are too many external and internal constraints that will alter what really is the best way ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The four important ideas of Contingency Theory are: 1. There is no universal or one best way to manage. 2. The design of an organization and its subsystems must fit with the environment. 3. Effective organizations not only have a proper fit with the environment but also between its subsystems. 4. The needs of an organization are better satisfied when it is properly designed and the management style is appropriate both to the tasks undertaken and the nature of the work group. DISCUSSION: There are too many external and internal constraints that will alter what really is the best way to lead in a given situation and some examples of such constraints (factors) include: The size of the organization, how the firm adapts itself to its environment, differences among resources and operations activities, assumptions of managers about employees, strategies being used, technologies being used, suppliers and distributors, consumer interest groups, customers and competitors, government and unions among others which shall be discussed below. According to the contingency theory, a Theory X manager would not structure an organization in the same manner as a Theory Y manager. following McGregor, there is a tendency to look at the Theory X manager as always being the bad ... • 14. The Cold War And Postmodern Eras America is often said to envelop in culture of fear. American elites have established this supremacy by the means of propaganda. From the Cold War to the War on Terror, these elites have maintained power along with the American Government to make sure they have control of their consumers. This has been accomplished with the establishment of an American foreign policy that has helped create a bipolar world. It allows America to focus on its interest and create a myth that the American people have a destiny to fulfill in the world. Thus understanding the implications of a foreign policy and use of propaganda as a way to inject fear into the American society is the tool that would be used during the Cold War and Postmodern eras. It is then ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Cold War was established after World War 2, where tensions between American and the Soviet Union had created two sides. On March 12, 1947, the Truman Doctrine would establish the set of ideas for a bipolar world. The Truman Doctrine was America s foreign policy that would be the building block for America s foreign interests from 1947 1991 (Donaldson pg.35). According to Andrew Bacevich, an American historian specializing in international relations, security studies, American foreign policy, and American diplomatic and military history, wrote, Foreign policy has, for decades, provided an outward manifestation of American domestic ambitions, urges, and fears (Bacevich pg.5). Foreign policy would be the underlining factor that would direct America in its conflicts against the Soviet Union. The doctrine was a speech given by Truman, asking congress for the funding to stop the Communist expansion. Truman wanted to prevent the domino theory where if one country fell to Communism, the others around it would soon follow. The Red Scare was already forming even before World War 2 but did not catch on until the late 40s. The first Red Scare was formed under the bipolar world, which sought to rid communism from America through labeling. • 16. Causes And Differences Of Medieval Society In Modern Society Modern society is inarguably different from medieval communities, quite frankly it would be terrifying if they were exactly the same. Contemporary culture, in general, is not wholeheartedly focused on the journey to salvation/ religious causes as was more common in medieval communities. Communication, technology and education have broadened the scope of human activity and opportunities. As far as declining religionand social hierarchy, it remains debatable whether it is a cause or effect of modern technology. Though because humans are creatures of habit and conservative as far as change, religious tradition and teachings remain embedded in many communities. Despite similarities based on tradition and inherited values, modern society differs in driving forces and religious prevalence due to a developed and educated environment. One of the most obvious differences between the two time periods is the presence of a social hierarchy. Though it would be naive to say that modern society flourishes with equality and opportunity for all, equality is at least somewhat attempted by many societies. Medieval communities justified opportunity difference with what they called the feudal system. This dictated education and position in regard to other people. Most medieval people believed that God dictated a person position in society and that is where they were meant to stay, as opposed to the modern idea of moving up based on merit (or connections). The twenty first century has marked an influx in research on Islamic bioethics from both Muslim religious scholars as well as studies conducted by academic researchers (Ghaly 592). In the field of religious bioethics, there tends to be a significant amount of coverage on certain topics. In Islamin particular, scholars and the public alike readily discuss abortion and euthanasia (Brockopp 3). Although Islamic customs emphasize the importance of community, Islamic theology in general promotes the individual, not communal, salvation. This means that in many situations, there are guidelines for how one should act, but individual circumstances can differ therefore warranting a private and individual action. Westerners often overlook this aspect of Islam, as there are a lot of misconceptions revolving around Islam and the Muslim identity. In this sense, despite there being general rules or guidelines Muslims tend to adhere to, there is still a heavy balance between the general rules and individual circumstances; meaning that bioethics can not be approached from only one view. These compounds are found in vegetables and fruits, wine, tea, extra virgin olive oil and cocoa, and exhibit strong antioxidant activity by scavenging different families of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)1. The main phenolic compounds identified in olive oils include hydroxytyrosol (HT), tyrosol (TY), secoiridioxide and ligands3, 4. Hydroxytyrosol, 2 (3,4 dihydroxyphenoyl) ethanol, a simple phenol found predominantly in olive tree (Olea europaea), is one of the most effective member of the polyphenol family1,2, because of its marked antioxidant activity, its capacity to impede low density (LDL) oxidation, platelet aggregation and endothelial cell activation and it protection against DNA damage3,4,5. Analysis Of White Kids Sadie Mazur Anthro 105 Rosa November 21, 2014 Appropriative Identities in Youth Culture In Mary Bucholtz book White Kids, she discusses the stature of whiteness in the United States as hegemonic, unmarked, and culturally absent, making it situational and unstable. Bucholtz suggests that to counteract that, the students she studied in her field work adopted many different identities and identifiers, such as levels of popularity and racial backgrounds, the use of language, and the physical styles with one chooses to present. One identifying marker the students use is slang. Linguists define slang as a youth dominated, rapidly changing lexicon associated with casual social contexts, but a nonlinguistic view frames slang as an illegitimate linguistic variety. The latter definition is inaccurate because these varieties have strict grammatical rules and are only illegitimate to the uneducated eye. Furthermore, calling slang illegitimate is disrespectful because it disregards the users of such language as inferior, therefore rendering them powerless. This disrespect is often aimed at the African American community, whose usage of AAVE is highly stigmatized. Slang, as a whole, is a shared youth identity in that everyone regardless of race or social status uses it; however, much of slang is available only to a certain group of people. Slang can be involved in processes of adequation or distinction, making its usage contentious or socially risky depending on what person used ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 36. Skepticism About The External World Skepticism about the external world is one of the most widely discussed arguments in the history of philosophy. Barry Stroud defines skepticism as the idea that we cannot have knowledge about the external world (Stroud, page 1). This conclusion is the result of Rene Descartes Dream Argument and has been a topic of discussion ever since. No matter how we attack the argument, it seems that we inevitably arrive at skepticism. In this paper, I will argue that the skeptical conclusion is true and why it seems to be compelling as a necessary condition for knowledge. I will describe the Dream Argument and take a look at Moore s promising response to the conclusion as an inconsistent proof. In the end, Moore s argument for evidence of an external world will fail to disprove the skeptical conclusion due to its lack of justified belief. Although I am intuitively inclined to deny the skeptical argument, I cannot logically do so but will argue against full blown skepticism and explain how mild skepticism is a more approachable route to knowledge. In our everyday conversation, we do not generally question the validity of small claims that we make during normal interactions. Technological Change Moves Faster Than Bureaucracy Technological change moves much faster than bureaucracy, and it is the patent office that must bear the collision of novelty and government for anyone who wishes to profit from their genius must go there to have their constitutional right to the proceeds from it verified. Exactly what technology can be patented in this day and age, as our bodies and proteins become subject to technology themselves, is indeed in need of some clarification. Today scientific advances allow us to look into the deepest codes that create our bodies our genes. With a small sample scientists can isolate the miniscule structure of just a single gene and analyze it for every divergence it displays in an individual as compared to the normal human population.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Smith Pharmaceuticals is one of these corporations. Over several years, they spent hundreds of millions of dollars on research perfecting the method to synthesize and analyze cDNA complementary DNA in the genes LIF and LCK. Mutations in these two genes, as Smith discovered, correlated with and were highly indicative of an increased risk of leukemia. Smith filed a patent on these genes and the process of the diagnostic test, and has since benefited over one million potential leukemia patients with a diagnostic that allows them to take preemptive strikes against the disease the average cost of leukemia in the Netherlands is $104,386 (de Uyl et al.), and one treatment in the United States costs $178,000 (Chen), while Smith s test is under $4000, and usually insurance eligible under new Federal law, qualifying as preventative care. As the Economist puts it succinctly, the point of a patent is to encourage innovation by giving inventors a limited period of exclusive control over the fruits of their labour, (April 2013). Smith invested these large sums into identifying this gene under the assumption that it would make profit off of these tests due to its rights over the information it gathers and, important to note, it would not have done so without this financial motivation. Otherwise, it is highly plausible that LIF and LCK s benefits would lie undiscovered even today, and the one million patients tested at under $4000 would all be undergoing $178000 ... Weight Lifting and Its Effects on Basketball Players Ten people gather around a center point waiting as two giants square off between one another, clashing for the most valuable prize of the battle ahead: the basketball. A game of strategy and high demands, basketball calls on both the body and the mind in harmony in order to secure a victory. It calls on your body in many ways that will strip you of energy unlike any other sport. Additionally, the game will demand a high intelligence and acumen from the mind when making split second decisions. Lifting weights can positively impact your body, physically and mentally; furthermore, this training can then be applied onto the basketball court to help increase the physical and mental attributes of a player. Being well equipped physically for basketball provides many advantages when you apply it correctly. Basketball is a unique sport that contains non stop movement in every moment. The objective is simple: score more points than the other team. This is accomplished by a constant burst of speed, agility, and quickness that combines for fluid motions up and down the court. If a player is not trained properly, this consistent activity can be extremely strenuous to their body. Plus, in a game of basketball the gameplay is live until the ball goes out of bounds, there is a foul, timeout called, or the end of a quarter. This is displayed throughout the story of Macbeth. Macbeth is so overcome with ambition that he will do anything to reach his destiny, and ultimately craves more power than he can achieve. Macbeth s blurred perception of ambition costs many innocent lives and inevitably leads to his own self destruction. At the beginning of the play, Macbeth meets three witches who reveal a prophecy to him that foreshadows his rise to power. Towards the end of the party Macbeth removes himself because he cannot find any good reason to why he is going to kill Duncan other than Vaulting ambition (I.vi.25 28). Once Macbeth begins to question his motives, Lady Macbeth is right there to push him back again. Solomon tried to pursue fulfillment through pleasure, wealth, and fame. He was letting his own interests control him, not doing what God has planned for him. Using only our human wisdomwouldn t get us far in life; we would only come across more obstacles that we can t overcome on our own. Without God s guidance and wisdom, we would live an interest centered life that only fulfills our personal interests, unlike a Christ centered life. In a Christ centered life, we put our faith in God and trust that He knows what is best for us, and therefore do everything according to His plan. Solomon felt that pleasure, wisdom, folly, foil, and everything is meaningless because he didn t put God first. He put his interests first and could only fulfill his As he attempted to draw satisfaction purely out of his pleasure, he realized that without God nothing can be fulfilled, and experienced many obstacles on his way. Through the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14 30, we learn that we should not be lazy, because God created us to work for Him and serve wholeheartedly. Unlike the third steward, we need to work to fulfill God s plan for us and serve God with all our hearts. What matters the most is that we need to have full commitment to being faithful and wise stewards to God, and doing what He has planned for us before we were even born. Talents are the ... • 47. Analysis Of Kiki s Delivery Service Kiki s Delivery Service (1989: Hayao Miyazaki) revolves around a young girl named Kiki who leaves her home with her talking cat familiar Jiji in order to hone her skills as a witch, but has difficulties to find her place in a new town while running an air courier service. Overall the movie focuses on tradition vs. modernity as well as the problems a young person can face while first living independently. I will be analysing the mise en scene and cinematography in the scene when Kiki first arrives in the town that she will call home. The scene starts with an over the shoulder establishing shot of the town that Kiki will be staying in, this is done to give the audience an idea about the size of the place and also allows us to see the town from Kiki s perspective imposing but exciting. After this we see a low angle sot looking up at Kiki as she flies over the ocean, she is laughing and yelling while flying her broom which connotates that she is having fun, this is done to create a contrast later in the scene where she is flying very formally to try and make a good impression. Another reason the ocean is used in this part is that the colour blue is used to represent calmness and serenity. Moreover, as with most Miyazaki movies flight represents the greatest form of freedom, therefore the shots of Kiki flying over the ocean while enjoying herself is used as a contrast to later in the movie when Kiki feeling trapped by her own feeling of inadequacy. He often uses an unreliable narrator in his stories. An unreliable narrator is a narrator that constantly switches his or her stories or attempts to justify wrong doing. Two of this are in two of Poe s greatest works The Tell Tale Heart and The Raven. The Tell Tale Heart is a short story about how the narrator copes with the murder of an old man. The narrator is unreliable because he attempts to justify the killing of the old man but murder is unjustifiable and he gives blank reasoning. The Raven. is a poem about how the narrator is constantly reminded of how the haunting feeling of his wife s death will never leave him. The author is unreliable because his anger intensity fluctuated throughout the altercation with the raven. Some characteristics of an unreliable narrator are: Deranged, Insane, or they have a mental issue. Poe often shows these character in his two great works stated earlier, The Tell Tale Heart and The Raven. Poe is a skilled author when utilizing an unreliable narrator show insanity. • 53. England in 1819 Essay England in 1819 Great poetry is great not because of what it says but because of how it is phrased. Few poems say anything that is very profound; instead, the best of them use language in novel, memorable, and effective ways. Certainly this is true of Percy Bysshe Shelley s famous sonnet England in 1819. In this poem Shelley describes the depressing, dark, and dirty state of affairs caused in Britain by political, social, and spiritual corruption. However, this poem would not be nearly as effective if it were not for Shelley s powerful use of such classic rhetorical devices as adjectives, alliteration, assonance, imagery, irony, lists, themes, and verbs. One device that Shelley employs very potently is the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 3); graves and may (l. 13). Such use of assonance gives the poem rhythm and makes it more beautiful. [VERY NICE] A fourth device that Shelley makes use of is imagery. The poem is full of such description and figureS of speech. Shelley uses many violent images, such as the leechlike (l. 5) image of a king who sucks the blood out of his countrymen. The king is blind in blood (l. 6), the blood of his own people. If it was not enough that the king sucks the blood out of his countrymen, BUT he also HAS starved and stabbed (l. 7) them. All these images function together to describe a horrible king who ignores the needs of his people and sends them out to fight his war. [VERY GOOD] A fifth method that Shelley brings to bear is irony. The poem is very negative, and the whole atmosphere implies that the king would lead his country to total ruin. The irony in the poem is that the destruction of England leads to a new beginning with hope. Shelley ends his poem by saying that Time s worst statute, unrepealed/ Are graves from which a glorious Phantom may/ Burst, to illumine our tempestuous day (ll. 12 14). The positive idea of a new beginning is ironic because it is in such sharp contrast to the death and destruction presented earlier in the poem. One of the few studies that research this link includes an exploration of visual opsin sequences in diverse vertebrate animals.
