Redefining Wilderness
By: Ian Dandridge, Jack Claypool, Natalie Germain, & Chase Pratt
Wilderness
• Is anywhere truly wild?
• Define
Wilderness Boundaries
• Wilderness divided into three boundaries
• 3/8 Wilderness
• 2/8 (1/4) Subsistence interaction
• 3/8 Commercial use
Wilderness Boundaries
Wilderness: 3/8 (37.5%)
• three sections
• follows the wilderness definition
• Visitors
• Pack in pack out
• Trails
• Important Restrictions
Fire in Wilderness
• We will allow fire management in all land areas, including but not limited to
National Parks and Wilderness areas.
• Fire management techniques are key for the modern day climate
Subsistance Interaction: 25%
• Subsistence Definition: the action or fact of maintaining or supporting
oneself at a minimal level.
• Allowing for more permanent nomadic lifestyles such as those of the natives
who originally lived in these wilderness areas.
• Would include things such as bow hunting, fishing, and traditional trapping
methods.
Restrictions
• Shelters must be temporary and constructed from local and organic
resources and materials.
• Because the definition of subsistence limits actions to maintaining the life of
oneself, all other actions such as for profit or fame are prohibited.
• Although all motorized vehicles, mountain bikes and machinery are
prohibited, horses will be allowed.
• Similarly to the wilderness zone, fire management and limited key stone
species protection will be accepted.
"in Wilderness is the
preservation of the
world."
-Thoreau
Commercial Use: 37.5%
• The outer boundary
• Recreation that is allowed in SFAM includes OHV, Hunting, Trap Shooting, as well
as tracking.
• Wilderness visitors have a wealth of allowable recreational options to enjoy.
• I not crossing through, or coming close to habitats that could be disturbed by noise,
and constant disruption of humans.
• Use of natural resources without over exploiting them, or not using them at all.
• New model for forests and other lands.
Commercial Logging
• Specific and sustainable logging practices
• Only in commercial boundaries
• Practices must allow for reforestation and tree regeneration to occur.
Sustainable Federal Acreage Management
• SFAM is a new management system
• Manages all land areas across the country
• Unites all previous management groups

Editor's Notes

  1. In the words of John Muir, "Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-civilized people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home: that wilderness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irregating rivers, but as fountains of life."
  2. Every place across the globe has had human impacts. Whether it be from CO2 emissions, combustion from vehicles, or from tribes thousands of years ago occupying it. There is no place that has not been impacted by mankind's footprint.  Thus, we define Wilderness as an area of any size where human impacts are minimal, and humans, as visitors, may interact without disturbing natural processes, except for when the disruption is to bring about a more natural area
  3. Every area designated into three sections  Wilderness area completely follows the wilderness definition Humans are temporary visitors, no permanent stays  Pack in pack out rules are strictly enforced  Trails are OK if made with non mechanized hand tools No motorized vehicles, no bikes, no horse/donkeys, no guns or hunting This area is okay for backpacking, but with minimal harm to the environment, an enforced "stay on the trail" rule, and walking is the only mode of transportation in the area.
  4. Fire management is crucial. While it is not "natural," prescribed burning is as close as one can get to "natural fire." With Urban development, fire suppression tactics and global warming with climate change, fire behavior, return intervals, and the length of the fire season are all changing. Fires now burn longer and more intense, the fire seasons are getting longer as well, and this is not natural. This is because of the human influence, thus, not even fire remains natural. Thinning and prescribed burning are ways to alter the fire patterns to actually benefit species. We will allow fire management in National Parks and Wilderness areas.
  5. In the words of Aldo Leopald, "That every citizen may learn to hold the lives of harmless wild creatures as a public trust for human good, against the abuse of which he stands personally responsible."
  6. There will be a boundary where commercial timber operations are allowed, however, these areas must include sustainable Silvaculture. These methods must include natural regeneration methods. For example, in a 50,000 acre plot, a company could cut 1,000 acres per year, after the cut they must plant the trees again before moving to the next stand the following year. By the time they get through the 50,000 acres, the first thousand will be grown again, so the process is sustainable and can allow for a cycle to repeat itself.
  7. The SFAM is a new management system used to incorporate all previous wilderness and forest management systems into one large community management system. (ex: U.S. Forest Service, BLM, Etc...)  National Park Service, the BLM etc. all come together into one large scale management system). The SFAM system allows for all communities and groups to come together and create a sustainable Forest system that benefits everyone. The SFAM will make decisions, as a whole, over every non-urbanized land zone throughout the country.
