You are normally a special person if you work
in social housing with a willingness to put
others first.
During the planning phase everyone says
yes they can do that on a set day
The task does not get done because someone else has asked for
something else to be done and again everyone says yes.
While this is a great approach it does pose
a bit of a problem with projects.
This always saying yes approach leads to projects
taking longer than they should to get completed.

8. At the start of a project everyone is
excited and interested in taking part.

Then after a while another shiny
project starts up.
Everyone leaves the old project
and moves on to the new shiny
project.
This leads to lots of projects on the
go and them taking a long time to get delivered.

9. Instead of delivering slow moving
large projects break them down
into lots of smaller projects.
KEEP IT SIMPLE
Smaller projects are easier to deliver.
How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at
a time.
You will be able to get the smaller projects delivered
quicker which will enable the organisation to start
receiving the benefits early.
The quicker a project can be delivered
the less chance of there being a Magpie effect.

10. Once you have broken the large projects
down the next step is to put them into a list
with the highest priority project at the top
and the lowest at the bottom.

With all the projects listed in order of importance
you now know which projects you should be
working on

11. CUT IT DOWN There is no point spreading people and
money across too many projects. All that
happens is the projects do not get done.
Doing less with more people reduces
the likelihood of the yes effect.
You need to cut the list right down and only do the top
priority projects. Even a list of 10 projects is too many
the aim is to have as few active projects as possible.

Rather than trying to deliver a project
from start to finish in one go a gated
approach takes a project step by step
along the delivery lifecycle.

project before too much time and money has been spent if the
