This document discusses why biodiversity is important. It begins by noting that values related to biodiversity are subjective and depend on perspective. It then outlines several categories of value provided by biodiversity, including direct use value through goods like food, medicine, and materials; indirect use value through ecosystem services like climate regulation, pollination, and nutrient cycling; and non-use values like cultural, spiritual and existence values. Several examples are provided for each category to illustrate the wide range of benefits that human societies derive from biodiversity.
