1. Why I Chose PR<br />“So what actually is Public Relations”. It’s a question I’m often asked when telling people what I’m studying. It’s a question I find quite tricky to give an answer to. Not only because it’s an industry of variety, but because of the way in which it keeps reinventing itself – One definition doesn’t last very long in the world of PR. That’s what attracts me to it – The way things are always changing.<br />What I love about Public Relations is the way in which it keeps you on your toes. It’s not “same thing, different day. It’s fresh; It’s creative; It’s current! I don’t want any old job. I don’t want to be in any occupation which I may resent. I want a career. I want Public Relations.<br />I also love the wide range of opportunities that Public Relations offers. From writing press releases one day to implementing your own campaign the next, there’s not a dull moment in this industry! And the roles don’t end there – Organizing an event, creating an image, revamping one – The opportunities are endless! The thought of a business’s reputation being in the palm of my hands is an overwhelming feeling and one that I thrive off.<br />Another element that attracts me to Public Relations is the way it allows you to be creative and ‘think outside the box’. I love to feel inspired and turning that inspiration into a new concept, for example a campaign idea. I have quite a quirky mind; my ideas are rarely the same as everyone else’s and while some of my ideas are totally ridiculous, some are so unique and this is what I believe helps to make me suitable for the world of Public Relations – I’d love to be able to share these ideas with my clients and have them be just as excited as I am. I’d love to watch my idea’s come to life!<br />I love people. I love forming relationships with people, which realistically is the trait at the core of Public Relations. It’s always nice to meet people like you, but it’s just as much of a pleasure to meet someone totally different to you, with different attitudes, values and opinion. I’m a great listener, easy going and I find it easy to find a common ground with people. As the communicator between an organization and its publics, I think this is quite a useful characteristic to have.<br />I’m a self-confessed media geek and I love every aspect of this ever-changing media environment we live in. The introduction of Web 2.0 has opened up new challenges that practitioners have never had to face before. We can no longer fully control what is being said about us. Some may see this as a threat, but for me, it’s an opportunity; a challenge, and a life without a challenge is a boring one. I’m excited to see how media changes in the future and how PR practitioners adapt to it – Social media has a big influence on our job role, so I believe we should monitor it as much as it monitors us!<br />Determination is a strong characteristic of mine, and I’m determined to make my mark in the world of Public Relations! <br />
