Artists create art for several reasons: recognition, religion, impulse, and self-expression. Some artists seek fame and fortune through their art, hoping to earn a livelihood. Others create art to glorify their faith or as an offering to deities. Some feel a strong internal drive to create, spending much of their time doing so out of passion. For many artists, their creations are a reflection of themselves and a way to express ideas and emotions that can't be conveyed through words alone.

- 2. RECOGNITION • -create art in hopes of gaining fame and fortune. • -artists use art as their means of livelihood as seen with many musicians. • -many and contemporary film stars are motivated to join show business due to the potential huge of earnings. • -some artists due to their reputation and talent, have become not just critically acclaimed but have earned financial success as well. • -one such artists is the Filipino visual artist is the Filipino visual artist, Ronald Ventura (1973), whose painting the Grayground was sold in auction in Hong Kong for almost 47 million pesos in 2011.

RELIGIOUS • Not all artists create for personal recognition; some do it to glorify their creator. • -this is evident in the many religious structures in the ancient word such as the pyramids, Hindu temples and the temples of the Greek and Romans. • -songs were also created for worship as evident in many medieval hymns and in one of the oldest surviving music found in Syria dated around 1400 BCE which is believed to be about the offerings of the goddess Nikkal. • -one such contemporary artist is the late Joey Velasco (1967-2010). IMPULSE • Some artists create art because they are driven by impulse. • -it is their passion and nothing makes them happier than doing their chosen art. • -some artist consider art as their life and spend their time doing nothing but such. • -an example of an artist passionate about his art was the famous Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) who in his lifetime created illustrations for books, calendars, cards, etc. that number around 3,000 images.
- 5. SELF-EXPRESSION • Artists no doubt create art for self expression. • -it expresses an idea and emotion that might not be adequately expressed through words. • -each artwork is a reflection of each individual artist’s personality and experiences, making each artwork unique.
- 6. Activity 2 • As a class choose a theme such as Love, Life, Justice etc. Once the class has agreed upon their chosen topic, express this subject in any art form of your choosing. You can articulate the subject through the different form of visual arts or the different categories of performing arts.
