The world is changing at rates never before experienced and we seek to understand that. If we are to be truly successful with the exponential change, we must make a fundamental shift in the way we think about and execute leadership. This presentation will suggest a new paradigm for future leader success.

Consumerisation: What we must learn from the 'other side'B2B Marketing
Business buyers have never been bombarded with so much information or had so much choice. To get their messages across, business brands need to appeal to decision makers as people, rather than grey suits, and this means thinking of them as consumers.
Mobile devices and digital techniques are breaking down the barriers as never before, in this session Will McInnes will discuss how exploiting techniques such as gamification and consumer-focused platforms such as Pinterest can help to reach these difficult audiences.
The Workshop on Quality Management in Public Services will make the participants aware of key elements in quality management and will enable the participants to apply these approaches in their daily functions. The workshop will also encourage team work and peer learning across the public organisations in Croatia.

IoD Course Tutor and Consultant Martin Thomas presented "Standing on the Shoulders of (Business) Giants - Lessons from the Old Economy" at the Elite Business Event.
In a world where 'innovation' and 'disruption' are at the centre of new business, should traditional management concepts be discarded?
This was a special presentation to DRB senior leaders on "Leadership in the 21st century." In this session, speaker Roshan Thiran shared 4 key aspects to leadership, from leadership being contextual to context changing and the importance of clarity in leadership. The final point was how great leaders drive change and how we can go about driving change in spite of the obstacles and resistance.
Leadership Lessons from the AICPA 2014 Leadership Academy - Created and delivered by Tom Hood and Gretchen Pisano of the Business Learning Institute.
It starts with our philosophy of the Bounce - where we progress from learning to lead yourself to leading others. That shift from technical mastery to leading people and projects takes on a new direction and the acquisition of new skills.
Our definition of the new leader is one who is positive, future-minded, self-aware and attuned to the changing context around them.
Over the four day interactive program we focus on four main skill sets:
1) Self-awareness - strengths, values and positivity;
2) Attuned to the changing context;
3) Have a vision, purpose and alignment;
4) Empower People through collaboration and engagement;
5) Continuous Learning - Keep you L>C.

Unveiling the Secrets How Does Generative AI Work.pdfSam H
At its core, generative artificial intelligence relies on the concept of generative models, which serve as engines that churn out entirely new data resembling their training data. It is like a sculptor who has studied so many forms found in nature and then uses this knowledge to create sculptures from his imagination that have never been seen before anywhere else. If taken to cyberspace, gans work almost the same way.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

Welcome & thanks

Purpose bring together people interested in leadership and management development – opportunity to learn, meet peers and those with a passion for leadership development and finally to be inspired and provoked
I will be addressing the topic – Why an innovative approach to Leadership Development is needed & fast – two parts
Break in middle of Simon & opportunity to ask questions
Simon - Institute of Director’s Director of the Year
Dave - published author – Know How to Do How
A few years ago I designed and developed a Presentation Skills course. And in that course we suggest that you start every presentation with something challenging or humorous or personal. So I thought I’d start by telling you a little but about myself.
These are the most important things in my life - my children- the reason I get up every morning
In my time I have been a private investigator – before phone hacking scandal – before mobile phones
And for ten years I was a professional stand up comedian (Russell Howard story?)
Like every third person on the planet I am currently writing a novel but unlike every third person, I actually am.
This is one of my favourite places – 300 yds from my house - Nags Head in Malvern if any of you are passing, Pub of the Year 2014 – Good Pub Guide
And this is my favourite place in the world – it’s not the Caribbean - it’s a small channel island called Alderney and the world’s best kept secret. So now you know, visit yourself but please don’t tell anyone else, we’ll spoil its charm.
This is one of my favourite things
And this is my current favourite TV programme – now all of this probably makes me out to be far more interesting than I actually am and doesn’t particularly qualify me to talk about leadership with you. Well I have done other things.
In between all of this I set up two small businesses, worked in business information and for a while in property.
I am studying with the Open UniversityAlthough I have taken a year out to study a Diploma in Strategic Leadership and Executive Management
I now work full time at Quanta. I started in sales around sixteen years ago and have worked in pretty much every department since. I spent a year as acting MD and led the company through quite a transformation. I am currently a management and leadership trainer although I prefer the word facilitator and over the last year I have led the project to revamp and launch our portfolio of management development courses. So I’ve been a leader, studied leadership and taught leadership, but actually for my first talk today I want to talk to you not from the point of view of an expert but from that of an observer.
I’m going to be looking at three questions today…
Read out, so the first question… and I want to start by looking at our political leaders… do they need to change? well some people think so
This man does
But he’s not alone - click
Voter turn out has been trending downwards for over half a century. And it’s not surprising. We’ve had MP expenses scandals, U turns from the Lib Dems over student fees and sexed up dossiers and it’s not just central government either – the recent report from Professor Alexis Jay over the sexual abuse scandal in Rotherham cited a failure of leadership at all levels – the police, the council, social workers.
Expenses scandals
sexed up dossiers
u turns on policies
Not just central government – Rotherham
So, there’s no doubt that our political elite need to get their act in gear. But what about our corporate leaders? Do they need to change?
Does anyone know whose values these are? CLICK - shortly before the scandal that brought the company down
And that’s just one example - we’ve had
Libor fixing, Energy misselling
PPI mis-selling. And people are getting fed up. Over the last few years the occupy movement getting headlines all over the world. Not just some radical protestors - shareholders are revolting too - just the other day - 52% of shareholders voted not to support the remuneration of Christopher Bailey, who took over as chief executive of Burberry on a salary of up to £10m a year
But does it really matter if a few hippys and wealthy shareholders are fed up? Governments and corporations aren’t necessarily going to change their ways on the views of these minorities
So how about this? We hear time and again in survey after survey that employees are not engaged and do not have faith in their managers and leaders. Only 7% of all US employees say that they trust their employers. And consider their superiors neither honest or competent So take a good look at your own staff when you get back to the office!
So something has to change. But haven’t leaders been told for years by leadership gurus that they need to change? As far back as 1960 didn’t McGregor tell us that we should be more Y than X? And here’s what Peter Drucker said in 1967
So surely leaders have already changed haven’t they?
Here’s a typical old school business leader
And here’s a more contemporary one – well some have
Doesn’t really prove anything - a sample of two - after all leaders come in all shapes and sizes as we know,
So here was our illustrious leader nearly 20 years ago
And today
So some have changed. Others not. But something bigger than wearing rollerskates to work is happening out there.
In the UK 2% of the economy is now represented by employee owned sector companies such as John Lewis, that’s £25 billion and yet more - £37 billion is generated by co-operatives which saw a 25% increase in numbers between 2009 and 2013. And there are now 70,000 social enterprises in the UK contributing £18.5 billion to the UK economy and employing almost a million people with a start up rate three times that of the mainstream SME sector.
- Small Business Survey 2012: SME Employers, commissioned by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills, The People’s Business shows that social enterprise has three-times the start-up rate of the mainstream SME sector Social Enterprise: Market Trends (Based upon 2012 Small Business Survey), Cabinet Office (May 2013).
- Martin Conyan and Richard Freeman, Shared Modes of Compensation and Company Performance, National Bureau of Economic Research, Working Paper 8448
And even that is just the tip of the iceberg. There’s a much bigger and more exciting development. This is a picture from Cairo in the Arab Spring – The role of social networks is the uprising has been well documented. Journalists covering the protests to overthrown Mubarak in the Arab Spring spent fruitless days and weeks trying to find the leaders of the movement, but they couldn’t because there wasn’t one. Loose coalitions and social networks organised themselves. This was a major turning point in history.
So we are starting to see leaderless revolutions. Is this trend of leaderlessness visible elsewhere?
Two of the world’s most recognisable organisations are simply networks of volunteers. Unpaid experts who give up their free time to work! Leaderlessly.
Some of you may have read this book – Drive by Daniel Pink and he has a lot to say about this
He says that we (humans that is) thrive on three things:
We want to achieve
Mastery – the need to be an expert - get better
Purpose – something bigger than ourselves and something bigger than money - in fact when profit becomes detached from purpose bad things happen – banks
Autonomy
Like any motivational theory, it owes a great debt to Maslow, but it had huge implications. But can we really have autonomy in the work place?
Here’s a company that doesn’t think that we need leaders. You may not have heard of them - they are based in California, started in the 1970s and now turning over $400 million dollars a year, processing 40% of all of the USAs tomato products. But that isn’t why they are exceptional. hey are famous for introducing and using an organisational structure model called self-management. I will show you a couple of clips from a video, featuring Doug Kirkpatrick from Morning Star, a long term employee of the organisation.
Play video
No managers, no leaders.
And they ‘re not alone Frederic Laloux -in his book Reinventing Organisations names others with similar ethoses - and it’s not just a few companies …
The exponential growth of Agile as a project management methodology owes as much if not more to its flattened hierarchy approach and emphasis on empowerment than to its effectiveness.
So is this …?
As Barbara Kellerman wrote.
Also wrote the book – Followership but whilst acknowledging that followers have a huge impact on outputs, success and so on, it still recognises two distinct groups: leaders and followers.
So Barbara says leadership needs to change but doesn’t quite do as far as to suggest the title of her book is anything other than a question
And other people too think that leadership is still important
Sainsbury’s shares rose 3% on announcement of new CEO
Apple shares dropped 5% on the day Steve Jobs died
And it looks like when there are no leaders, leaders will step in to fill the vacuum - Egypt is of course back under military rule.
But Millenials – 18-30 year olds who have grown up with social networks and democracy and liberal social attitudes
So how do those leaders that remain need to change?
It’s clear that they need to be more ethical, accountable – as we have seen from the financial crisis, so many recent scandals and public disquiet
The CCL white paper suggests that leaders must become more adaptive to deal with what it calls the new VUCA (a military acronym that stands for Volatility, Unpredictability, Complexity and Ambiguity.)
They of course tie all this in with the ubiquitous sound bite that we are in times of – “unprecedented rates of change”
Time and again we hear leaders and leadership gurus and futorologists tell us this. Buit they would wouldn’t they? But is it true?
Let me ask you a question
What’s the greatest technological invention of all time – the most impact on the way we live?
Here’s what a group of 16 scientists came up with recently
and it included – antibiotics, anaesthetics, internal combustion engine, photography, paper, plough, printing press, air conditioning. Each one of these it could be said had a greater impact on society than the internet. There is one line of thought that the washing machine has had a far greater impact on society by liberating women from domestic chores and freeing them up for the workplace.
The reason many of us say the internet of course is saliency bias – that is a bias towards the most prominent or recent events.
Here’s a graph showing the rise of internet usage. - sure that’s huge growth but is it any faster than this…. (next slide)
If you work the numbers out that’s a faster rate of growth than the internet.

Unpredictability, you tell me a time that events were predictable .
Complexity – no doubt, living in a global economy where cultures differ, exchange rates fluctuate, political situations change, and global outsourcing and distribution are required. Big data means ever more data, and of course everything’s connected, people via social networks and the global economy too so that when banks lend money too much money to unemployed people in Missouri to buy a house with, a few years later financial institutions in London collapse
But hasn’t part of leadership always been about keeping things simple about providing clarity and vision: we’re different, we’re cheaper. Was it really hard to see that China’s economy was growing faster than everyone elses, that the internet was booming, that giving 110% mortgages to people without jobs was going to backfire eventually? That an unregulated industry where individuals are given the authority to gamble billions in a single day without the need for consultation was going to have casualties, that credit default swaps and collatorized debt obligations have no real value, no solid foundation. I read a book on the financial crisis and in it a hedge fund manager suggested that he was the only person who ever actually looked at those mortgages backing up these supposedly AAA rated derivatives, when in fact he realised they were junk.
So look I don’t mean to underplay the difficulties of leading today. And clearly todays leaders need to change to meet the unique challenges we face. I’m just saying I’m not sure how more difficult it is to lead today. My next question is how does leadership development need to change to equip leaders to face these challenges?
