Philip V was King of Spain from 1700 to 1746. He abdicated in favor of his son Louis I in 1724. Philip V fought in the War of the Spanish Succession against the Grand Alliance and lost territories like Gibraltar and Menorca by the Treaty of Utrecht. He punished Aragon by imposing Castilian laws through the Nueva Planta Decrees. Philip V ruled as an absolute monarch of Spain.
