Order for Explicit Teaching of the Phonemes
(Speech Sound Pics) within the SSP Approach

RWI phonics flashcards used to teach and reinforce
the sound pics – approx $10 per pack

Children have their sound pics and sound pic words in SSP folders that can go home
each night, with phonics readers. Order these cards from readaustralia.com/orders.htm

Teachers/ Parents - ‘helpful words’ list

How any words are added to their
folders after the first 11 depends
on the child.
As you progress, point out when the
child can now decode the words (as
the child learns more sound pics)
These are high frequency words, not
‘sight words’ – and most can be decoded
when the child has covered those sound
pics. For this presentation I have added
11 in Green, 20 in Purple, 20 in Yellow
and the rest in Blue.

Also use Decoding material folder, Encoding material folder, and
also order or download the readers shown at each level.
Whiteboard video lessons for each level also available. Fun
lessons with Miss Emma and the puppets!
The recommended readers follow the SSP, allowing children to
practice vital foundational skills at their level, building
confidence. They are able to quickly link the speech sounds to
speech sound pics, blend into the word, and develop fluency at
each level.

Teachers – these should be ‘speedy sessions’ ie short and intensive morning warm up type sessions

Teacher ideas – spend about 2 minute max on this slide.
Point to a speech sound pic – ‘what is this a picture of? Can you point to the picture of the speech sound ssss, etc.
Im going to point to some of the sound pics, can you work out the word? (tin, pat etc) Can someone come and show me the sound pics (in order) for the word ……(green level
sound pic words)

however it is far better to use pre-cursive eg t

Teacher ideas – spend about 20 seconds on each of these slides
Same order every time with these slides – point to s’ and the children say ‘sss’ – point to s/i/t and the children say the sounds and blend into the word. They then say
the phrase as you form the letter on the snake with your finger, and they copy it in the air. If ready, let them draw the letter on their own mini whiteboard. – make
sure they say the phrase as they form the letter.

What is this a picture of? Which speech sound? Can you say the speech sound? Close your eyes and see if you can remember this speech sound pic even when you close your eyes. This
is ONE of the speech sound pics for the speech sound sssss (the others are in the cloud)

Teacher ideas for slides with words - say the sounds, while you point to them, and then blend into the word. Which is the first sound, last sound, middle sound? What if I changed the s to a p?
What if I took the ‘s’ away – what would the word be? Can you think of a word that rhymes with sit? Use these not only to reinforce the speech sound to speech sound pic link, and
blending, but also to help children order (segment) and manipulate speech sounds and pics

Decoding with Blue Level Sound Pics
