Year 1 if SSP not
previously used)
Please print (A3) and
laminate for every child’s
home folder, and have
one on each table for
easy access, to give
prompts for spelling
and writing activities.

Also have a table ‘trying’ book if
you don’t like children rubbing
out work. They follow the
process – say the word, count the
speech sounds, draw lines, work
out the sound pics
What will children be able to do
when they have completed the
  Green, Purple, Yellow and
      Blue SSP Levels ?

          (all of the following)
To read and spell the basic
skills children need are to ...
• *hear speech sounds – beginning, middle, end – know
    how many there are
    * know that we use ‘sound pics’ to represent speech sounds
    * be able to blend ‘speech sounds’ and ‘sound pics’ into words (l to right)
    * to be able to place (order) ‘sound pics’ correctly to build words
    * to understand that most sounds can be represented using more than .
    one ‘sound pic’ (ss/ps/sc/s etc)
*to understand that some ‘sound pics’ can represent more than one
    spoken sound (eg ow/ th)
    * to understand that ‘sound pics’ can be made up of one or more letter
    (eg eigh)
    * to understand what they are reading
How?
Direct, systematic and explicit FUN teaching of
the SSP Levels by enthusiastic, trained teachers,
     alongside opportunities (planned and
         spontaneous) for self-discovery.

Introduced to concepts that speech sounds can be represented by more than one sound pic
(eg c/k/ck) that sound pics can be made up of more than one letter (eg ck, ff, ll) , that some
sound pics can represent more than one speech sound ( eg c and g) and that when 2 of the
same letter are next to each other this represents the same speech sound (ss, ll)

Skills included;
Listening for speech sounds, identifying if speech sounds are at the beginning, middle
or end of the word, linking with sound pics, identifying sound pics, blending sound pics
into words, segmenting sound pics, forming sound pics (letters), writing words,
creating sentences, discussing meaning, thinking about sentence structure before
writing, using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops, rhyming, clapping rhythms,
working out which speech sound the sound pic represents, by blending the word for
meaning (oo/ th/ eigh) .
New concepts – when some sound pics sit together they create a brand new sound pic
(sh/ch/th/ng) – and can again represent more than one speech sound (th/ oo) - q is
always sitting with u in a word
By now children should have all of the foundational skills required to decode (read) and
encode (spell) and you are able to help children with fluency, vocab and comprehension.
Please have a 15 minute reading time every day, with a range of books for the children to
choose. They can read to themselves, to a friend, in groups, to an adult etc.

Readers will be following the order, eg Dandelion – and I will upload as many free readers
as possible this year, so that children can practice these skills in meaningful ways.

New concepts
A speech sound can be split, in print, by sound pics – eg ate has 2 speech sounds a-e/t
(t is last speech sound) however in print the speech sound a-e (ay) sandwiches this sound
pic. (next slide illustrates- you do not need to watch this with the children, but can if
helpful) Some sound pics can be made up of sound pics that dont seem to fit !
(eg ph, wh ) – the King wants it this way so we just remember them
Words learnt as ‘tricky words’ are now either ‘tricky yes, yes’ (decodable) or ‘tricky no, no’
(difficult to decode and easier to memorise eg one / two / was )
Some words may sound the same, but are spelt with different sound pics. (hear, here etc)
Then the children systematically go
through each speech sound to cover
any sound pics missed within levels
Free teaching resources available
          for each level
Don’t forget to get some Speech Sound
                                       Family animals for your classroom.
They love you reading to them!
If you speak in speech sounds they
can understand you, as most only speak
in speech sounds. This is why they love
it when you say the sound pics before
you blend them into the word.

Please use puppets to show how words
are created using smaller parts.
Ikea has some great puppets at the moment with
mouths you can open and close with your fingers.
You need to be able to open and close the mouth to
show the individual speech sounds. These are
especially important for children who have poor
phonemic awareness.
They are about $5
‘what’s under
 the h/a/t’
activities
The hat is from Ikea as well- and the small animals. These are ideal for P-2 - to
develop phonemic awareness. For example speak in speech sounds and ask
children to guess what is under the h/a/t eg its a sh/ee/p - or /th/r/ee l/i/tt/le
p/i/g/s. Can they hear the word/s? Or tell them how many speech sounds, and
tell them what the last speech sound is, the first etc. In Year One I said there
were 4 words, and then gave them the speech sounds- they had to remember
each word after blending - l/i/o/n a/n/d a r/i/ng
The children can do it - hide something under and then give the speech sounds,
or just the first and last after saying how many etc.
When you have shown it you could ask them to speak in speech sounds, to give
you the colour etc.
Vary it- you are helping children hear the smaller parts in words (the speech
sounds) to identify where they are (which speech sound is first, last etc) and to
blend into a word. This is not phonics - which is the print- but is vital for many, so
that the phonics makes sense. Using toys like this makes it visual, and FUN !! If
you can help every child develop phonemic awareness no children will need
learning support after year 2- because this is the part that best predicts
difficulties. Even yesterday I could see which children dont have god PA at the
moment- we will change that- and they wont eve know they WOULD have had
difficulties. Im creating a resource for TAs so they can work with those children,
and intensively develop this PA (look out for new power points).
Otherwise they will never develop reading and spelling brains. Em
SSP Phonics- The Whole Package
• To offer the ‘whole package’
  teaching must centre around
  helping the brain process the
information rapidly and effectively, to improve
  fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
  START with speech (phonological awareness)
so that systematic and direct teaching of the
alphabetic code (phonics) is logical, fun and
meaningful! The quicker they decode the
quicker the comprehend…the more they read
  the more they understand.
The Speech Sound Pics® (SSP) Approach shows you HOW to systematically teach
1 2 the alphabetic code (phonics) and ALSO develop phonemic awareness, so that the
phonics makes sense. It is the ability to hear the smaller parts in words that will help
the highest number of children learn to read and spell in English.

Children learn to hear speech sounds in words, and know what sound pics
represent those speech sounds in written words. (SPELLING BRAIN)

Children learn to form letters in ways that most effectively help develop a
reading and spelling brain, flowing to the next sound pic in order to more easily
create words and sentences, and more accurately convey the writer’s message.

Children learn to recognise speech sound pics in written words and work out
which speech sound they represent so that they can more easily and quickly blend
them into the word for fluency and comprehension. (READING BRAIN)
Knowing how to spell
‘butterfly’ , or read the
word is not enough.

Children need to learn,
and work out, WHY
words are created in
this way (ie the parts/
speech sound pics.)

This will help them
develop the skills needed
to spell and read even
the most difficult of
words, including those
they have never heard of.
SSP is not used to help
children read and spell,
but to become readers
and writers.
SSP is used to shape
reading and spelling brains
for ALL children.
Always start with SPEECH
Spelling starts from speech, not print.
We created the written word to record our spoken words, not the other way around.
Words are spelt using sound pics™ – representations of the smaller parts of our words –
so children MUST be taught them all. All can be seen within the Speech Sound Clouds

This enables everyone (teachers and students) to work smarter, not harder.

Purple Level (use SSP assessment checks at the end of each level and
record result – this takes 2 minutes per child)
You can then go through Green and Purple every
day, or twice a week.
When on the Yellow Level go through Green,
Purple, Yellow twice a week.
When on the Blue Level go though all levels –
Green, Purple, Yellow and Blue, once a week.

These take a couple of minutes per child, and you simply
record which they need more practice on. The tests check
for sound pic recognition, blending, segmenting,
manipulating, identifying speech sound in words, ability to
decode sentences for understanding. Parents and TAs can
help with this.
• Check 1 Speech Sound Identification – student says
what s/he sees and tells you the sound you ask
for – beginning, middle or end. Also ask them

Check 2 Sound pic identification - student asked to point
to the ‘pic of X speech sound and also asked to identify the speech sound when
      teacher points to sound pic

Check 3 Student asked to point
to the sound pics that make a word (eg ant if green level) – see if they order
correctly. Teacher points to sound pics in order to create a word and students
      identifies whole word.
Check 4 Student shown sound pic words for that level and asked
to identify, and put into a sentence. Shown tricky words and asked to identify.

Check 5 Student asked to write words, from within that level, after
being given the word verbally. Check letter formation within this check.

Student reads assessment sentences, no picture clues,
Check 6 based on their level
Eg (Green Level) Pat sat in a pan in the sand pit.
1 verbal question about the text, and one to encourage an opinion
eg Who sat in the sand pit? Why do you think he was doing that?
1 verbal question about the text, with written answer.
  eg where was he sitting?

When students have moved past Green, and are able to also read questions
please change 1 verbal question about the text, with written answer, to 1
  written question, with written answer.
Ask children to manipulate sound pics eg if I say
‘lim’ without the ‘l’ what would I say?

Read assessment texts, ask child to identify
sound pics for a specific speech sound

Children confident with these are ready for the Purple Level
•
  Assess every child before moving
         on to the next level
 See separate ‘Assessment’ power point
showing quick activities (check each child in
 around 3 – 4 minutes)

These are also ideal for TAs as they can assess
new children to identify gaps, and to see
 where to start each child

Please do not use PM assessments in Prep as
they do not assess reading and spelling skills
(ie the processes required of the brain)
Assessing skills/ material used for decoding practice

This is the part I believe that we arent doing well in AU as a whole-
mainly as most schools dont have readers, or reading material, that
follows the order in which the sound pics (phonemes etc) are taught.
This can be for numerous reasons- eg budget!- and this is why Im
creating these power point presentations- to show how to overcome this.
Parents need this info also.

If you have year 1 or 2 children who are struggling then take them back
to Green and work up again. Dont give them PM readers as the sound
pics are all over the place and their brains wont have chance to
recognise the sound pics, blend them into the word, and retain the info in
order to comprehend the text. They will have to slow down too much to
try to work out the words - as they dont know at least 85% of the sound
pics and so start trying to guess from the illustrations. Its hard work for
the brain, and doesnt help with fluency.
If you save the ‘decoding practice’ power point to your laptop you can see the
order, how to help children develop decoding skills, and they can practice these
skills in order to help the brain become 'wired' for fluency and comprehension.
Taking time building up like this helps EVERY child, and gives all a really solid
foundation. If you follow this sequence and allow children to develop the skills
required (shown at the beginning of every level) and assess them at every level
(also shown in another presentation) then every child will be able to read PM
readers by the end of Prep. But dont start off with PMs- use these when they
have completed Blue. Then they will whiz through. If you spend 3 terms without
PMs then most should be able to read around Level 15 - 20 when tested at the
end of Prep. It isnt possible for ALL to reach level 15 + if you dont do it this way
however.

Parents please take note- starting with PMs before the blue level will slow
many children down. So if your school doesnt use SSP then YOU use it at
home- and you read the PM reader to them- and let them practice reading
using the material shown here (more will be added) Children need to know that
their 'reader' is a book they can decode. Others are books they share with you
for pleasure, to develop language, imagination etc - knowing that pretty soon
they will be able to read them as well!

Suggestion - children work out tch must be another sound pic for ch and look for ‘ch’ speech sound cloud
Again - assess every child before
      moving on to the Clouds
When we move to the clouds the focus becomes
more on the spelling of words - ensuring that no
child has missed any spelling variations. During the
direct teaching of the levels they will have been
taught the common sound pics, but now need to
cover all. Many children will have already
discovered them, but we need to ensure that
EVERY child has that knowledge.
Yippeeeee !
Now you’re ready to explore ALL of
the speech sound pics, through
the clouds !

By now childrenshould have all of the foundational skills required to decode (read) and encode (spell) and you are able to help children with fluency, vocab and comprehension. Please have a 15 minute reading time every day, with a range of books for the children to choose. They can read to themselves, to a friend, in groups, to an adult etc. Readers will be following the order, eg Dandelion – and I will upload as many free readers as possible this year, so that children can practice these skills in meaningful ways. New concepts A speech sound can be split, in print, by sound pics – eg ate has 2 speech sounds a-e/t (t is last speech sound) however in print the speech sound a-e (ay) sandwiches this sound pic. (next slide illustrates- you do not need to watch this with the children, but can if helpful) Some sound pics can be made up of sound pics that dont seem to fit ! (eg ph, wh ) – the King wants it this way so we just remember them Words learnt as ‘tricky words’ are now either ‘tricky yes, yes’ (decodable) or ‘tricky no, no’ (difficult to decode and easier to memorise eg one / two / was ) Some words may sound the same, but are spelt with different sound pics. (hear, here etc)

Don’t forget toget some Speech Sound Family animals for your classroom. They love you reading to them! If you speak in speech sounds they can understand you, as most only speak in speech sounds. This is why they love it when you say the sound pics before you blend them into the word. Please use puppets to show how words are created using smaller parts.
  • 17.
Ikea has somegreat puppets at the moment with mouths you can open and close with your fingers. You need to be able to open and close the mouth to show the individual speech sounds. These are especially important for children who have poor phonemic awareness. They are about $5
  • 18.
    ‘what’s under theh/a/t’ activities
  • 19.
The hat isfrom Ikea as well- and the small animals. These are ideal for P-2 - to develop phonemic awareness. For example speak in speech sounds and ask children to guess what is under the h/a/t eg its a sh/ee/p - or /th/r/ee l/i/tt/le p/i/g/s. Can they hear the word/s? Or tell them how many speech sounds, and tell them what the last speech sound is, the first etc. In Year One I said there were 4 words, and then gave them the speech sounds- they had to remember each word after blending - l/i/o/n a/n/d a r/i/ng The children can do it - hide something under and then give the speech sounds, or just the first and last after saying how many etc. When you have shown it you could ask them to speak in speech sounds, to give you the colour etc. Vary it- you are helping children hear the smaller parts in words (the speech sounds) to identify where they are (which speech sound is first, last etc) and to blend into a word. This is not phonics - which is the print- but is vital for many, so that the phonics makes sense. Using toys like this makes it visual, and FUN !! If you can help every child develop phonemic awareness no children will need learning support after year 2- because this is the part that best predicts difficulties. Even yesterday I could see which children dont have god PA at the moment- we will change that- and they wont eve know they WOULD have had difficulties. Im creating a resource for TAs so they can work with those children, and intensively develop this PA (look out for new power points). Otherwise they will never develop reading and spelling brains. Em

SSP Phonics- TheWhole Package • To offer the ‘whole package’ teaching must centre around helping the brain process the information rapidly and effectively, to improve fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. START with speech (phonological awareness) so that systematic and direct teaching of the alphabetic code (phonics) is logical, fun and meaningful! The quicker they decode the quicker the comprehend…the more they read the more they understand.
  • 21.
The Speech SoundPics® (SSP) Approach shows you HOW to systematically teach 1 2 the alphabetic code (phonics) and ALSO develop phonemic awareness, so that the phonics makes sense. It is the ability to hear the smaller parts in words that will help the highest number of children learn to read and spell in English. Children learn to hear speech sounds in words, and know what sound pics represent those speech sounds in written words. (SPELLING BRAIN) Children learn to form letters in ways that most effectively help develop a reading and spelling brain, flowing to the next sound pic in order to more easily create words and sentences, and more accurately convey the writer’s message. Children learn to recognise speech sound pics in written words and work out which speech sound they represent so that they can more easily and quickly blend them into the word for fluency and comprehension. (READING BRAIN)
  • 22.
Knowing how tospell ‘butterfly’ , or read the word is not enough. Children need to learn, and work out, WHY words are created in this way (ie the parts/ speech sound pics.) This will help them develop the skills needed to spell and read even the most difficult of words, including those they have never heard of. SSP is not used to help children read and spell, but to become readers and writers. SSP is used to shape reading and spelling brains for ALL children.
  • 23.
Always start withSPEECH Spelling starts from speech, not print. We created the written word to record our spoken words, not the other way around. Words are spelt using sound pics™ – representations of the smaller parts of our words – so children MUST be taught them all. All can be seen within the Speech Sound Clouds This enables everyone (teachers and students) to work smarter, not harder.

  • 155.
Assessing skills/ materialused for decoding practice This is the part I believe that we arent doing well in AU as a whole- mainly as most schools dont have readers, or reading material, that follows the order in which the sound pics (phonemes etc) are taught. This can be for numerous reasons- eg budget!- and this is why Im creating these power point presentations- to show how to overcome this. Parents need this info also. If you have year 1 or 2 children who are struggling then take them back to Green and work up again. Dont give them PM readers as the sound pics are all over the place and their brains wont have chance to recognise the sound pics, blend them into the word, and retain the info in order to comprehend the text. They will have to slow down too much to try to work out the words - as they dont know at least 85% of the sound pics and so start trying to guess from the illustrations. Its hard work for the brain, and doesnt help with fluency.
  • 156.
If you savethe ‘decoding practice’ power point to your laptop you can see the order, how to help children develop decoding skills, and they can practice these skills in order to help the brain become 'wired' for fluency and comprehension. Taking time building up like this helps EVERY child, and gives all a really solid foundation. If you follow this sequence and allow children to develop the skills required (shown at the beginning of every level) and assess them at every level (also shown in another presentation) then every child will be able to read PM readers by the end of Prep. But dont start off with PMs- use these when they have completed Blue. Then they will whiz through. If you spend 3 terms without PMs then most should be able to read around Level 15 - 20 when tested at the end of Prep. It isnt possible for ALL to reach level 15 + if you dont do it this way however. Parents please take note- starting with PMs before the blue level will slow many children down. So if your school doesnt use SSP then YOU use it at home- and you read the PM reader to them- and let them practice reading using the material shown here (more will be added) Children need to know that their 'reader' is a book they can decode. Others are books they share with you for pleasure, to develop language, imagination etc - knowing that pretty soon they will be able to read them as well! Em:-)
