Phonemic awareness development
Start by saying these words, and the children listen for the ‘oi/oy’ speech sound
soil toy boy boil
How many speech sounds did you hear? Say them individually and the children count
s/oi/l t/oy b/oy b/oi/l
Then tell them you are going to look at the TWO speech sound pics for this speech sound. Show them the slide
with soil and toy.
Say the speech sounds – blend – say the word s / oi / l - soil t / oy - toy
Ask children to describe what they see. Why do you think he is digging? Who do you think gave the boy those
cars? etc
Next slide – here are the Blue level sound pics – can you see one of the sound pics for ‘oy? Follow my finger, Im
going to read the poem. If you see or hear ‘oy’ put your hand up. Then go back and look at it in the word, repeat
‘he tugs on my toys’’ and show the sound pic.
Now close your eyes – what can you see (describe tugging on the toy)
Next slide
Lets look at the speech sound cloud for this speech sound- you can see both of the sound pics. So when you hear
this sound in a word you know its going to be one of these!
Lets look at this one (point to oy) Close your eyes and see it in your mind. Open your eyes- did you remember it?
Now look at the other one. Close your eyes and see it in your mind, Open your eyes- did you remember it?
Next set of slides- Let’s decode these words
Now go to your table and write ‘soil’ and ‘toy’. Try both words with both sound pics and see which one looks
right to you.
Let them practice . Then write the words on the whiteboard and ask them to check theirs – correct if necessary. .
Photocopy the last slide and laminate – children sound out words out to a friend.
The two cards are from the RWI Yellow Pack

perfect play toy out group touch August
I play with my puppy, he loves it so much
He’s wriggly, he licks me, he’s silky to touch.
He’s perfect when out with just me, or a
group…
He tugs on my toys, and runs round in a loop
In November when cold, or August when hot
He just wants to play, he just doesn’t stop!
