Abortion for Underage Children Should Require Parental...
Underage people are prohibiting smoking, drinking, or going in field trips without their parents
permission. Therefore, how can a teenage girl have an abortion without the approval of her parents?
Abortion itself is a controversial subject, and underage abortion is even more controversial. Minors
should not have an abortionwithout the consent of their parents or their legal guardians for a variety
of reasons. First, most adolescents are not mature enough to make decisions that will change their
lives forever. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen
Sebelius state, Some older adolescents have the cognitive ability and capacity to reason similarly to
an adult. However, neuroimaging studies... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Parents must be included in their children s decisions because parents can influence their children
in a significant way. For instance, parental consent laws reduce the minor abortion rate by 19
percent (qtd. in Davis). A 2008 study done by Michael J. New, Ph.D. shows that parental
involvement laws reduce the abortion rate among 17 years old by 18.3 percent, among 16 years
old by 14.3 percent, and among 15 years old by 8.6 percent (qtd. in Davis). These statistics show
that the states that require parental involvement laws the abortion rates decline greatly.
Sometimes, teens want to have an abortion because they are afraid of their parents. However, if
the law requires minors to inform their parents about their pregnancy and the possibility of an
abortion, their parents will be able to help them. If a teen does not inform her parents about her
being pregnant, this teen will never know if her parents would have been supportive and guide
her through this difficult process. Finally, the most crucial reason to why parental consent laws
for abortion should be legal is the potential medical dangerous that can occur before and after an
abortion (Earll). Parents that are aware of their children desire to have an abortion and support
their children s decisions can provide important medical history to a physician (Christian Med.). A
minor may not be fully conscious of a family history that makes surgical or medical abortion

A Brief Note On Workers Creating Their Own Exploitation

Workers Creating Their Own Exploitation
In a modern society we are led to believe that there is a fair exchange taking place when
workers(working force?) sells their labour power ( Gary Lapon, 2011.).( define this) Karl Marx
believed that the working class were being exploited through laborious jobs. In today s society
wages are determined by the current cost of living within provinces across Canada. Usually the
wage workers receive do not allow for many to live a comfortable life yet we continue to work
these jobs as they feel we have no other option. This feeling of desperation comes from the term
wage slavery (cite ), where one feels as though they are stuck working a job that makes them
unhappy, so they remain feeling successful or are able to meet the cost of living. As a result of
wage slavery, employees come into work on days that they had previously booked off, are
frightened to call in sick when sick and often take abuse from their boss. Employees are showing
up with their work persona, believing that these low wages are equal when in reality they are not
(S.Enns, 2014) Employers profit from their employees without employees being completely aware
of it. Employers want their workers to produce more and produce it efficiently, without increasing

The Glorious Revolution In American History
1.The Glorious Revolution
In 1688, the Protestant Queen Mary and her husband, William of Orange, took the British throne
from King James II in a bloodless coup. The Glorious Revolution had significant long term effects
on American history in that the Bill of Rights and the Act of Toleration, passed in Englandin 1689,
influenced attitudes and events in the colonies. Even more significant, the overthrow of James II
set a precedent for the removal of a hated monarch.
2.Aztecs
This was an empire that comprised of the Mesoamerican people who were conquered by the
Spanish under Hernando CortГ©s, 1519 1528. The Aztec empire had a capital city called

Yet the war was far from over. It was by the stroke of a pen, changed the conflict from a war to
restore the Union to a struggle to end slavery It was not until January 1, 1863, that President
Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
6.Antietam This was far most the terrible battle of the age. It was the bloodiest single day in
American history. Some 6,400 soldiers on both sides were killed, and another 17,000 were
wounded. A Union officer counted hundreds of dead bodies lying in rows and in piles. The scene
was sickening, harrowing, horrible.
7.The Whiskey Rebellion Soon after the Battle of Fallen Timbers, the Washington administration
resolved on another show of strength in the backcountry, this time against the so called Whiskey
Rebellion. The whiskey rebellion had happened because Hamilton had started taxing on liquor
which was levied in 1791. This made the farmers angry because it taxed their most profitable
commodity.
8.Anaconda Plan This plan was issued which involved imposing a naval blockade on southern
ports and slowly crushing resistance on all fronts. The Union s industrial might was a deciding
factor in a long war of attrition.

Comparing Blood Wedding And Yerma
The greatest Spanish dramatist and poet, Frederico Lorca, wrote two books with very different
plots, yet the literary elements included were very similar The Blood Wedding and Yerma portray
the political and sociological views that are customary to Spain, such as male dominance, as well as
family honor. In addition, both The Blood Wedding and Yerma, contain the theme of human will
fighting against human destiny, encompassing a broad depiction of Spanish ideology. The Blood
Wedding and Yerma consistently exemplify the dominance of men in correspondence to the
inferiority of women. During this time in Spain, that mentality was the norm, and widely accepted.
Lorca portrays this mindset vividly in both of these novels,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I know she s a good girl. Isn t she? Quiet. Hard working. She bakes her bread and sews her
skirts...(Lorca 5) The Bridegroom s mother represents Spain s society as a whole, in regard to
the woman s role to be Quiet, hard working, to bake and to sew. She doesn t inquire if she s
pretty, or intelligent, etc, she only wants to know what she s going to do for her son. Lorca gives
the reader the opportunity to sympathize with the Bride, and her lack of true identity, due to a
distorted society. Yerma, though a completely different story line, portrays an even greater sense
of male dominance, and female minority. Lorca ambiguously creates an ongoing dialogue
between a married couple, Juan and Yerma, allowing us to see the extent of male dominance in
this culture. Juan, is a very prideful, controlling husband is scolding his wife Yerma. JUAN. Don t
you know the kind of man I am? The sheep in the fold, and the women in their houses. You go out
too much. Haven t you heard me say that from the beginning? (Lorca, 92). Throughout the story,
Juan is reprimanding his wife over different things, primarily over her desire for a child, that isn t
remotely mutual, but this time Lorca uses Juan to define the control that men have over the
women. He makes a very strong point regarding how demanding Juan is, having a huge impact on
this generation, because this level of control over women is something we can barely relate to.
Lorca then uses Yerma, to expound on the male

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois Essay
William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, born in 1868, was a scholar, activist, and philosopher, born
into the era of Reconstruction and lynching. Though he accomplished much in his life, Du Bois is
largely known for helping found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
(NAACP) and writing one of the most prominent works in American critical racetheory, The Souls
of Black Folk. Du Bois made it his life s work to contest racismthrough self assertion, humanize
black peopleacross the globe, and find a way to integrate black society and white American
society. Much of his rhetoric focused on double consciousness and the veil, separate but closely
related concepts that Du Bois used to describe the experience of Americans, both black and
white. While Du Bois passed away a mere day before the March on Washington in 1963, his
rhetoric remains vital to anti racist philosophy; for today, Americans live in an age of colorblind
racism. It is a commonly held amongst white Americans belief that all Americans are treated
equally and fairly, often citing the civil rights movements of the 1960 s in which the Voting
Rights Act of 1965 and the Civil Rights Act of 1968 came to be. However, as of 2016, 42% of
black Americans are dissatisfied in regards to how they are treated, while a mere 15% of white
Americans are dissatisfied with the treatment of black Americans.1 Much of Du Bois rhetoric
focused on education; more specifically, how to use the role of institutions,

Six Decisions That Will Change Your Life
Six Decisions that Will Change Your Life: Mature
John 4:7 15
This week is the third week of our sermon series that accompanies our small group series based
on Tom Berlin s book 6 Decisions That Will Change Your Life. While we all make many
decisions each day, these are 6 monumental decisions of our Christian journey. The first week we
heard about the Decision to Follow, and last week it was the Decision for a New Life. This week
we will discover what it means to make the Decision to Mature. Let us pray and begin. Prayer. Our
scripture reading this morning opens with a Samaritan woman, Jesus, and a well. When this woman
approaches the well, Jesus asks for her to give him a drink. At this request the woman is taken
aback. It was unprecedented for a Jewish man to be asking her for anything. First of all, this
woman was a Samaritan. The Samaritans and the Jews schismed after disagreeing on the proper
place of worship. A feud that even scripture felt the need to clarify by explaining in verse 9 Jews
do not share things in common with Samaritans. Second, she was meeting Jesus at the well
alone. Which alludes to her being unclean, or impure, in some way that would prevent her from
getting water when all of the other women do. Jesus approaching HER at all is startling to her, if
not utterly confusing. Yet still, Jesus persists, saying if you only knew who I am and the gift that
is before you. If you only knew, then you would ask for a drink and be given living water. And the

Atlanta Truck Awareness Essay
Let An Atlanta Truck Accident Attorney Help Protect Your Rights! According to the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 342,000 large trucks were
involved in traffic collisions in the United States during 2013. From the data collected by the
NHTSA, seventy one percent of truck accident fatalities were people in other vehicles and
seventy two percent of the injuries were sustained by occupants of other vehicles. This disparity
between truck drivers and occupants of other vehicles is likely caused by the difference in weight
and size between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. During a collision, the force of the
impact from a commercial truck can literally rip apart or completely crush a passenger vehicle....

The trucking industry is governed by complex federal laws and regulations. You need an
experienced Atlanta truck accident lawyer who understands trucking regulations and laws to
protect your right to a full settlement. For example, large trucks are required to have black boxes
(much like the boxes in airplanes) that record critical information such as speed and braking
immediately prior to a collision. If you do not hire an attorney with experience handling large truck
accident claims, your attorney may fail to take quick action to protect the evidence on the truck s
black box. This could be the evidence you need to prove the truck driver was at fault for the
collision. You must prove fault in order to receive compensation for your injuries. Furthermore,
insurance companies for the trucking industry aggressively defend truck accident claims because
large truck accident claims are usually quite substantial. Therefore, insurance companies have teams
of professionals who immediately begin investigating the case to limit the company s liability.
Aggressive insurance adjusters and investigators pursue accident victims to attempt to obtain
evidence to use against them or pressure them into settling the claim prior to consulting with an

Through out this assignment I planned to observe Vygotsky s Sociocultural Theory of Cognitive

plays a major role in the development of children. A second aspect of Vygotsky s theory is Zone of

Dr Milgram s Experiment On Obedience And Authority Figures
Pioneering Psychologist Stanley Milgram once said, Ordinary people, simply doing their jobs, and
without any particular hostility on their part, can become agents in a terrible destructive process.
Obedience is like a narcotic; under its influence, even a strong willed person can do horrible things
to others without a second thought. The only way a member of society submitting to powerful
authority can escape being obedient is to live completely isolated. Subjects usually follow the
orders given by a leader without a second thought, with many going the extra mile despite the
mental and physical harm they could cause others. In order to satisfy an authority figure, people are
willing to hurt mentally, abuse physically, or even murder others in cold blood because humans are
born with the urge to comply an authoritarian figure.
This behavior is well represented and tested in Professor Stanley Milgram s experiment on
obedience to authority figures conducted in 1961 to 1963 at Yale University. In this experiment
Milgram got several participants to be teachers and students. Then made the teachers to ask the
students questions, and shock the students every time they got an answer wrong. The shocks given
to the the students got stronger for each answer, and the maximum shock at 450 volts was deadly.
The students were actually just actors who acted as if they were getting shocks, but actually they
did not get any shock. This experiment was conducted to see how far the teachers were

Makeup Industry Analysis Paper
For the black woman struggling to find the right shade of makeup have no fear! It has always
been very difficult to find shades of foundation that represent the numerous numbers of shades
the melanin filled woman, or man, comes in. The beauty industry is now expanding! Each of
these products has been evaluated first hand by friends, family, top beauty gurus, and me. I will
evaluate the price, product coverage, and color spectrum of each product. The price determines
affordability and product quality. Product coverage tells how much surface area the makeup
will cover and how much product is used to achieve that coverage. The final and perhaps most
important quality of a foundation brand is the color spectrum available. If a brand only limits
itself to the skin tones of a light skin African American or even a tanned Caucasian then that
brand is not considered POC, People of Color, friendly. Product range matters, especially when
trying to reach a large audience. Starting with Kat Von D s Lock it Foundation, this foundation is
for those who are trying to look their absolute best 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Lock it

of the product used is very small. The consumer can choose to add more layers of foundation if
desired, but this product will last at least a year after purchase. With its 24 hour claim the consumer
never has to worry about reapplying their makeup or worrying about patchy

Whaling in US compared to Japan Essay
Whaling in US compared to Japan
Did you know that in the last 50 years over two million whales have been killed? The United
States views whaling very differently than Japan does. It is a complicated and controversial topic.
Many people have opinions about whale hunting. However, everyone should know both sides of the
whale hunting issues before they act on the issue. To start out I am going to tell you a little about
whaling. The first whale hunters were in the prehistoric times. At first they would just kill and eat
beached whales. That became such a habit that they started hunting them. Most whale hunters use
harpoons, guns, lances, or bombs that blow up inside the whale. They use catcher boats, or kayaks.

code on whale hunting. The United States never depended on whale meat like Japan. They
mostly whale hunted for a hobby. The Congress feels that whales are a unique resource of great
scientific interest to mankind and are a vital part of the marine ecosystem. Man has overexploited
whales for many years, highly reducing species and endangering others. The United States has
extended its responsibilities to protect all marine animals. They think that whales are a particular
interest to citizens of the United States. Japan started whaling way back in the 2nd Century BC.
They whale because they have whale meat as part of their diet. In 1946, whale meat was not
considered special food anymore but was necessary to keep the Japanese healthy and alive because
they depended on it for so long. People ate whale meat as a source of protein whether they liked it
or not. In 1947, about 47% of the total animal protein was whale meat. Until the 1960 s, whale meat
continued to be their main source of protein. In 1962, the whaling industry recorded 226,000 tons
of whale meat; this was the highest amount throughout the history of the Japanese whaling. The
percentage of whale meat consumption compared to the total animal meat consumption was 23% in
1964. (whalenet 1) Whale meat was the only meat served in school lunches, which began in 1947

Analysis Of How Soon Is Now By John Morrissey
The Smiths are widely considered a band with lyrics constantly bordering on poetry, and
Morrissey s song writing ability was and still is unparalleled. Songs like their 1985 hit how soon
is now? broke through this barrier, with lyrics based on and taken from famous literature such as
George Elliot s Middemarch, and the end product being one of the most lyrically complex and
emotive songs ever composed, improved only by the solemn strumming of the band behind the
lyrical genius of Morrissey.
How Soon Is Now, is the Smiths greatest song, in the minds of many, and is about a painfully shy
man s search for love. Morrissey uses words in the lyrics that most writers would never even think
of, or be able to use to good effect if they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The song also has verses detailing the contemporary Manchester LGBT community. Morrissey is
perhaps one of the most infamous Queers of history, due to his famed skirting of his bisexuality, but
clearly voices his opinions during the song. This is detailed during the interlude:
There s a club if you d like to go you could meet somebody who really loves you so you go, and
you stand on your own and you leave on your own and you go home, and you cry and you want to
die
Music journalist Jon Savage commented that the song s lyrics were evocative of contemporary
Manchester gay club culture:
The whole idea of meeting somebody who really loves you is regarded as a benefit of going out,
and the author embarks in this desperate action in the hopes of finally finding love.
The profoundness of this comment is only recognizable when one considers the struggle to find
somebody to love them in a world where their attraction to somebody of the same sex was not only
questioned but attacked, and the sense of isolation felt by people such as Morrissey, after spending
their nights searching for romantic connection, but frequently ending at home

Yeats and John Hughes. Although George Russell attended a number of schools up until the age of

seems to be mostly self taught after his early school years.
It was in 1884 that George Russell first started taking an interest in the mystical world and the
occult, which also can be seen in his paintings and poems. This also led up to the creation of his
pseudonym

haunted for a name for his paintings. One night in a dream, he heard a voice saying Call it the birth

(Aön), After looking up the word in a library, George Russell found out that the word Aeon was
used by the Gnostics to represent the first created men. For a while he then started using Aeon as a
signature on his work, but later shortening it to Г†, which is how he s now more commonly
known. The first works with Г† as signature appeared in 1888.
From pictures and drawings of Г† Russell that I ve studied, his physical appearance in early years
was that of a small and thin boy with a nice appearance. In his more mature years, Г† Russell grew
to be a fairly tall, well proportioned but also heavy built man. Most of his life he wore a beard and
in my view he looked somewhat imposing. But Г†
Russell also had a loud voice and didn t mind speaking his thoughts.

This shows how Tan s mother was strong willed and believed that she did not need help, because it

Thank you for Smoking (Rhetorical and arguments analysis)
Introduction
The film Thank you for Smoking is a dark comedy where the primary protagonist, Nick Naylor is a
lobbyist. He talks for the cigarette industry and will not extra the American Authorities or even the
press. At the in advance, the film prominently tackles all these topics but deep down it also
portrays the partnership between a dad and a son.
Rhetorical and arguments analysis
In a single conversation between a father and a son, Naylor coaches his son Joey by telling him the
beauty of argument: if you argue correctly, you re never wrong . This depicts a framework of Nick
s personality and probably explains the reason why as to the reasons he will not lose quarrels. It is
because he reframes the discussion till he wins. Also the film shows a significant critique posed by
the culture. They are the capabilities which run the federal government and the industry and are
engrossed in doing offers rather than bothering about the stakes. In the chat show, Nick wins the
debate by announcing the release of the $50 million marketing campaign to dissuade teens from
smoking. However, the Captain when hearing concerning this advertising campaign remarks I wish
the marketing campaign is not too effective! The Captain just hopes that the campaign will not
effectively stop teenagers from being conscious of cigarettes rather than even start

1 Situation: The transition
My client was Sonia and her transition was the change of her career choice. She said that before
when she was in high school she wants to study early childhood education because she thought she
likes to work with children. And when started studying at George Brown College for English, she
found out a lot of information about the early childhood education program and decided that the
program was not suitable for her. She found out a lot of information like what kind of job the
person can do after they finishes the program and the job description like what were their daily

In the end she decided to take the work and career counseling program where she later can further

During the transition she felt a lot stress and also lost of direction. She said she did not know
what she will do in the future. And after she made the decision she was very happy because there
is a goal and she knows what she needs to do in order to achieve it which helped her to plan out
her future career goals. Sonia said the transition was a gradual transition and was also on time
because she knows she is young and she has a lot of time for her to achieve her goals. The
transition to become a social worker is permanent choice and the work and career counselling
program is just a temporary transition that will help her to enter York university for social worker
program. Throughout the time of her transition, she was living at home therefore her living
situation was very stable.

The transition was very stressful for Sonia because she like to know what she wants do to in the

Essay on Halfway Houses
If I were to tell you that a group of federal inmates guilty of a variety of crimes that included,
embezzlement, drug manufacturing, child pornography, and murder were in your community, the
average person would want to know where those criminals were located and shut that location
down. In many cities across the United States, there are facilities that house these convicted
inmates. The facilities are called halfway houses, and they were created to help an inmate that is
released from prisontransition into a community under supervision. The halfway house program
can be a beneficial step in the process of an inmate s release, and can reap lasting rewards for the

Another problem that the prison system face is that after an inmate is released from prison,
they have a very high probability to repeat the offenses that they went to prison for originally.
Halfway houses have been a proven way to increase the chance of success for inmates once they
have finished their sentence, and this keeps them from further burdening an already straining
system. The Bureau of Prisons spends a large amount of money housing, feeding, and attempting
to rehabilitate convicts. Given the current laws in place, it is hard to offset the costs required to
run those prisons. Residents participating in halfway house programs are extremely low cost
when compared to those inmates residing in the prison system. The differences in costs can be
associated the lower amount of compensation for staff, smaller facilities, and cheaper utilities.
The residents of halfway houses are required to give 25 percent of the gross income they earn to
the Bureau of Prisons. Given the large difference in cost factors, halfway houses are a very
economical way for the Bureau of Prisons to save money on the last six months of an inmate s
sentence. The probation office has also reaped the rewards of halfway houses. Inmates that are
released from prison, they will usually be required to have supervision by a probation officer. In
the past when a felon violated a condition of their probation, there were very few ways to punish
that person, and those punishments usually

Treating ADHD In Children
The statistics are stunning, an estimated 6.4 million school age children (ages 4 17) have
received a medical diagnosis of Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Have you
ever wondered what it is like to be diagnosed with ADHD? Take a moment and put yourself in the
place of a child who has received this diagnosis. Imagine what it is like to be the boy or girl who
can t stop screaming, fighting or fidgeting. The child who stares and does not focus. Imagine the
parents of an ADHD child, who takes their child out in public and he/she begins running around,
climbing on objects, knocking things over or just screams so people think you are mistreating him

Everyone has an opinion about the role of medication in treating ADHD symptoms which leads to
this controversy. The results from the Multimodal Treatment Study (MTA) show that medication
was the single most effective treatment (Peacock, 2002) . For more than 40 years, stimulant
medication has been prescribed for ADHD. There is a lot of research showing that they are safe,
effective and reduces the symptoms of ADHD while they are being taken (Dudley, 2005). On the
other hand, results from the study also suggested that a combination of psychological and
behavioral counseling with medication is the most effective overall treatment (Dudley, 2005).
Although the study suggest the use of a combination of treatments, stimulant medication should be
the first line of treatment based on effectiveness. In the past, ADHD treatment has typically focused
on medications. The specific class of medication most commonly prescribed for ADHD is
stimulants (Martin). Stimulant medication is the best and safest way to control ADHD symptoms.
Eighty percent (80%) of children respond well to one of these medications ( ADHD Children and
Medication , n.d.). Stimulants such as Ritalin or Adderall are commonly prescribed, well tolerated,
act quickly and in most children, have few side effects

Negatives And Negatives Of Photography
Today, in technology we can do anything we want with images, and it has been used as a tool for
evidence. Photographers can do many things for example, keeping records of people s lives,
allowing memories to last forever and intriguing people. I can t imagine living without photography
because photographyis more than just a image. Without photography, we wouldn t have pictures of
our childhoods, siblings, and pasts. Since digital manipulation existed, it started to make people
feel deceived. In the real world, there are so many unrealistic body images that look perfect that we
start to question and doubt our appearances because, in our minds, we want what they have. It is
wrong to fool people with a manipulated image. Photo manipulationhas a negative effect on our
society and it has to be put to a stop.
Photo manipulation started earlier than you think. As early as 1825 There was a man by the name
of Joseph Nicephore Niepce. Joseph have constructed a photographic print using a photo engraved
printing plate. He was able to use multiple ways of manipulation. The real photo manipulation did
not start until about the 20th century when actual digital photos were being taken regularly. In
glamour photography many photographers alter celebrity photos to improve figure, color of hair,
teeth, eyes, skin complexion, blemishes, makeup, and piercings. Many editors,in magazine

Mass Media And Mass Shootings
Since people are mostly only able to participate in catastrophes such as this mass shooting at a
distance, news media is the primary source of information, which therefore creates the audiences
reality of the events that occur.(Wheeler 80) With this, the mass media has the control of what
people are exposed to, and the choice to amplify awareness to what they choose as important. In
an interview conducted with Sarah, an undergraduate student at the University of Nevada, Las
Vegas, she recalled her exposure to the news of the shooting: The only reports I had access to,
was what I saw in the news . When asked how she thinks the media had an effect on her
perception of the shooting, she stated: Well I believe that since the only information I was able
to get was from news sources, what I saw in the news is what I believed. So I really do think the
media had a strong effect since I was exposed to mainly what they chose to present to me. With
this, media messages, such as the reporting on the Las Vegas shooting, exert a strong influence on
audiences and the cultivation of people s perception. The frequent exposure to these stories of mass
shootings and the use of descriptors based on race are fed to the audience and become a common
knowledge. Ultimately, the promotion of racial stereotypes through the disproportionate
representation of perpetrators of mass shootings influences public opinion and
perception.(Lankford) With the strong effect that media has on the people, it is

Cross Cultural Issues In Human Resource Management
Cross cultural management is the subject field management in a cross cultural context. Cross
cultural management takes place when a manager handles someone from a different cultural
background. This challenge in management is very common as businesses expand globally, hiring
immigrants and work to increase diversity. It includes the study of the influence of societal
cultivation on top management practices. Organizing a business in a diverse cultureenvironment can
be challenging but it is not something that cannot be achieved. Nowadays, some organizations have
started special awareness programs in cross cultural management so that they can work with less
cultural issues and embrace the benefits that they gain from cross cultural management. However,
there are many still fail to understand the importance of bringing individuals from diverse
backgrounds together. Most managers think that by implementing such programs are just waste of

Literary Analysis Of Debra Marquart s The Horizontal World
The upper Midwest is a region often viewed as unimportant or boring due to its seemingly endless
plains and uneventful daily life. In her memoir, The Horizontal World, Debra Marquart challenges
this view to show her fondness of the upper Midwest. By using techniques including juxtaposition,
realism, and references to well known people/works, Marquart effectively manipulates her
audience to agree with her perception of the region. Juxtapositioning is typically used in a narrative
to show multiple events occurring at the same time or contrasting views which reveal a claim. In
this text, Marquet employs a creative use of the technique by using both real events and referring to
texts about the region in comparison to one another. For example, Marquart compares Garrison
Keillors Lake Wobegon, in which she references, where all the women are strong, all the men are
good looking, and all the children are above average with the Coen Brothers , Fargo, which she
reminds the audience is, the macabre land of murder by woodchipper. By comparing these two
dramatically contrasting works, Marquart places the idea in the audience s head that this could be a
region containing vast stories and interesting people. In addition, both works are well known,
giving the region a sense of importance. Marquart continues to manipulate the audience in the
following paragraph when positioning the layout of the land with the opinions of the earliest
assessors. By placing, easy inclines and

Drones Bad
Drones are widely discussed if there good or bad for the environment around them or if

dangers with their camera and that they could help spot terrorist attacks earlier. But in the other
argument, they say that they could say drones are a danger up high to pilots and that they can be

of scary stuff that can be used against you.
One reason why People need to get rid of drones is that they can spy on people. They can be used

to get rid of drones is because they can be used for terrorist attacks. They could attach something

Genetically Modified Organisms Is Bad Essay
Genetically Modified OrganismsA GMO (genetically modified organism) is an organism, such as a
plant, animal or bacterium, which has had its genetic material altered. The first genetically
modified DNA organism was created in 1974 by Stanley Cohen, Annie Chang and Herbert Boyer.
Eight years later, the first transgenic plant was produced. In 2015, over 90 percent of soy, cotton,
canola, corn, and sugar beets sold in the North America have been genetically engineered. Currently,
the use of genetically modified ingredients is legal in Canada. There is no law that requires
products containing genetically modified organisms to be labelled and disclosed to customers. Due

Firstly, genetically modified seeds permanently contaminate the environment through cross
pollination. It is the nature of plants to cross pollinate and spread their genes, but this means the
harmful genes of genetically modified organisms are also being spread. Even organic food
cannot be deemed 100% free of genetically modified organisms, because they are potentially
contaminated. GMOs are essentially contagious but we are unable to quarantine them. This
makes it difficult to avoid GMOs by means of an organic diet, and increases the need for
labelling. Also, genetically modified seeds do not increase crop yields. Contrary to the belief of
many Canadians, they instead work against ending world hunger. The International Assessment of
Agricultural Knowledge, Science and Technology for Development report stated that GMO crop
yields were highly variable and in some cases, yields declined. Whereas sustainable non GMO
agricultural methods used in developing countries have conclusively resulted in yield increases of
79% and higher. (IAASTD, 2009, p.8) Genetically modified organisms serve no beneficial purpose

According to farmers insurance, the average funeral costs up to 7,000 dollars going with the
traditional coffin and burial. Cremation was figured to be about half the price of a traditional
funeral, with urns ranging from $25 to $250 and above. When going with the bio urn process,
this would cost about the same as the cremation process would, rounding up to about $2,500
including the cremation process and could be more cheap depending on the tree chosen which
range to about $105, and even though the price may still be somewhat high, this provides for a

How Wegman s Inventory Management Practice Is The Point...
Another proposed method for improving Wegman s inventory management practice is the point of
sale system. The POS system is a perpetual inventory counting method that electronically records
items immediately upon their point of sale (Stevenson, 2015, pg. 552). In other words, as a cashier
scans a customer s groceries, each scanned item is automatically recorded in the system and
deducted from the store s inventory. Implementing a point of salewould benefit a business s
inventory managementfunction in several ways. First, the POS system will provide managers with
a continuous flow of updated information (Stevenson, 2015, pg. 552). As a result, the information
will provide more accuracy when used for sales forecasts and analysis, which substantially affect
inventory decisions. Continuously, this inventory system would also allow greater flexibility in
the sense that it can be wirelessly linked to the main company s inventory system, creating a
network of the company s inventory systems. The POS system is capable of tracking many
operations at once and can be modified according to management s needs (MacCarthy, n.d.). This
flexibility would undoubtedly benefit a large company like Wegman s with many store locations.
Lastly, the system is able to help businesses maintain a high level of customer service. Because the
system gives customers a receipt with the price and quantity of each item purchased, the customer
is able to see exactly what he or she purchased. This practice

Analysis Of The Book The Demon
In another of Kawamoto s work, The Demon , the mother figure in the film undergoes a
transformation that impacts family negatively: old age. The Demon begins by presenting the
mother figure lying in bed, dying and unable to care for herself. Shortly after, we see her difficult
life flash before her eyes a life full of loneliness and sadness. The scene later switches to her sons
going to hunt for food. During their hunting trip, the sons notice something follows them and
eventually realize it was a demon. They immediately go home, only to watch their mother
transform into said demon. The mother s transformation into a demon signifies how motherhood
during old age transforms women into unwanted beings. Even though the sons love their mother,
her frail condition hinders them, as she cannot assist around their home in any way. To describe
this situation, Rebecca Copeland, in her essay, Mythical Bad Girls, compares a mother at old
age to a womb that devours, she gives life and then takes it back. This comparison exhibits
negative views about mothers. First, it shows how society views women solely as vessels for
reproduction. Copeland s comparison of mothers to their reproductive organs not only objectifies
women, but it also suggests women have no other purpose than reproducing. Second, Copeland s
comparison implies that while a mother may bring life, she also takes it away through her
requiring care during old age. Due to a mother requiring care, she impedes upon

The Child that Lives from Within
The social sciences often question if psychopathic behaviour is innate or a product of social
environment. The answer seems difficult to discern because it is not split down into equal parts of
nurture and nature, but rather rely on one another for a better understanding. In the movie Psycho
by Alfred Hitchcock, Norman Bates downfall proposes how crucial a healthy childhood is to the
mental state of developing child. Contrary to nature focused beliefs, not all human behaviour comes
from an individual s genetic makeup, but rather through experiences that become ingrained in the
mind like scripture (Cooke 25). Theories proposed by Sigmund Freud and other research comparing
the relation between psychopathy and environment can help to rationalize the reasons behind
Norman Bates unsuccessful childhood, the impact of his parent child relationship on his self
perception, and the influence of his upbringing on external relationships. Despite the age of the
theories and the year of the film, the question concerning if Norman Bates mental state is innate or
a gradual creation provides an understanding of current parent child relationship issues. To be
familiar with the cringing extent of vacant family bonds emphasizes how necessary it is for parents
to build a strong relationship with their child or suffer the consequences.
Theories of Norman s childhood:

Women s Struggle For Equal Rights
In pre Revolutionary France and America, Women had no political rights and were forced to rely
on men. The women were destined to live a life of a house wife, she was only seen competent
enough in society to raise and educate kids and take care of her household. In both countries, the
revolution increased the population s attention to political matters and made liberty and equality
very important to the people. Unfortunately, Women did not claim any rightsduring this time, but
the women of the French Revolution and the activities they were implicated in heavily influenced
the movement and struggle for equal rights. Their March on Versailles, their political clubs and
pamphlets, and the prominent women political figures were vital assets that influenced the struggle
and movement for equal rights during the 19th and 20th century in France. During that period, due
to the abolition of the censorship and the liberty to publish, some writers argued for the women s
struggle for liberation and suffrage like Judith Sargent Murray with her Essay On the Equality of
the Sexes , which protested the idea that men had greater intellectual capacities then women, As
well as other French writers such as Olympe de Gouges who wrote several plays, short stories and
novels in which she expressed that women and men are different, but this shouldn t stop them from
equality under the law. Additionally, De Gouges was the author of the Declaration of the Rights of

Humans are very selfish people, they think of themselves much more frequent then they think

this, but women are just as guilty when it comes to being selfish. However, in the two poems To
His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell and To the Virgins to Make Much of Time by Robert
Herrick we see many similarities in their efforts to get with a girl that they like. They both try to

interest, which is getting sex, more understandable and seem less important than it is. Lastly, both

The Power Of The National Territory
Taking in account Max Weber definition of a successful state, a failed state can be defined as a
state fully incapable of exercising power within its boundaries, its failure to provide basic goods
to its citizens, such as political and social needs, and incapable of exercising the monopoly of
the legitimate use of physical force. Although in a weak states, like Colombia, Indonesia,
Thailand, the state is still able to provide some political goods to its citizens and exercise power
in much of the national territory, in a failed state this is not the case. The failed state is indeed
unable to provide basic and economic needs to its citizens. The nature of the failed state varies
across geographical regions, colonial history, and political circumstances. However, they share
some economic and political features. Human insecurity pervades in every aspects of a failed
state, from social tensions to civil wars, from geography to corruption and external actors, whose
presence in many cases proceeds to worsen situations. The vast majority of failed states lack in
security and violate most of the human rights of their citizens while at the same time fail to
ensure basic social services. Moreover, failed states are characterized by huge inequalities. The
gap between the rich and the poor is extremely high, where just a small percentage lives wealthy,
while the vast majority of the population starves everyday. Elite models deliver financial rewards

turned into movies like for example, Matilda, Charlie and the chocolate factory and The BFG.So it
must be easy or brilliant enough to be turned into a very good movie to watch.Roald Dahlhas
written so many books in his lifetime. Roald Dahl was not just an author he was also a spy, an
ace fighter pilot, a chocolate historian and a medical inventor. In this following essay there will
be three acceptable reasons of why he is the best author. The first reason of why he is the best is
because Roald Dahl puts an image into our heads without the illustrations he just describes it really
well with just words. Like for example he put Imagery when Mr.Wonka was describing the
vermicious knids in Charlie and the great glass elevator. The way he said it was like this The
vermicious Knid can turn itself into any shape it wants. It has no bones. Their body is really one
huge muscle, enormously strong but it can just as easily give itself two legs like a human. I think
it is a very good explanation of a vermicious knid and it actually seems kind of creepy. In Matilda
when Hortensia was describing Ms.Trunchbull I think Roald Dahl had made a pretty clear
explanation when he was making Hortensia describe how terrible Ms. Trunchbull. She said, She
hates every small children. She therefore loathes the bottom... Show more content on

He always has creative and imaginative ideas that are unusual, unique and hilarious. I also like
the illustrator for the drawing, it always matches the book and it also looks really good
combined. Maybe Roald Dahl inspired you to start writing your own stories. Maybe when you
write your own stories there might be,backward words, great and funny characters or maybe you
might have literary devices. So Who do you think is the best author in your

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Exclusive Jurisdiction
Statutory exclusive jurisdiction is a form of the international jurisdiction, which is always regulated
by the mandatory norms of the law and which may not be overridden by an agreement on
jurisdiction by the defendant s voluntary submission to the different forum. It has imperative
character and stands on the fact that the matters involved in the exclusive jurisdictionrules are
closely linked to the state sovereignty or the territory of the state and in these situations, the state
interest prevails over the private. This means that the state has a special interest to make its courts
hear the dispute despite other controversial circumstances (such as for instance the agreement on
the jurisdiction of a different court), exclude any possibility to transfer the case and the most
important, do not allow the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments, which are made
with the violation of the exclusive jurisdiction rules. This special state interest is legally justified
and admissible. Therefore, the provisions of the exclusive jurisdictions prescribe that, if the subject
matter of the dispute is one of the specifically indicated therein, only the courts pointed there have
jurisdiction to hear the dispute and settle it.

Alienation In The Garden Of Eden
The first and one of the most popular narratives in the Hebrew bible is the story of the Garden of
Eden. Here, in the book of Genesis, the LORD God places Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden
and commands them to eat freely in of any tree in the garden, but to not eat from the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil. It doesn t take long for them to disobey this command, leading to
separation from the LORD God. The story of the Garden of Edenserves as a foundational narrative
for early Jews by portraying Adam and Eves alienation from the garden, from each other, and
from God, revealing the need for a way back to unification with the LORD God like there was in
the garden. The first thing the Lord God does after creating Adam is make a place for him to
live in Eden, but Adam s actions get him sent out of the garden. After breathing life into Adam,
the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had
formed (Gen 2:7 8). Eden when translated means delight, showing that the garden that the
LORD God made for Adam was a divine place. Then the LORD God commanded Adam you may
eat freely of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall
not eat (Gen 2:16 17). This is the one command the LORD God gave to Adam, but he disobeys
because of his selfishness and is deserving of death. For Adam s disobedience, the LORD God
drove out the man so that he could not enter back into Eden to eat from the Tree of Life

Dual Engineering And Integrated Product Development
Question #1) Concurrent engineering (also known as simultaneous engineering and integrated
product development (IDP)) was originally defined in 1988 by the Institute for Defense Analysis
(IDA) in its report The Role of Concurrent Engineering in Weapons System Acquisition (Stark,
1998). This practice is opposite to consecutive engineering, where various components of a business
(such as marketing, manufacturing, and design) are siloed with one another. Consecutive
engineering leads to a throw it over the wall mentality, as one business component such as
marketing performs the tasks required for its division and then would send it down the line to
design. This fragmented business structure leads to quality issues in the product development,
which results in greater cost and slower development (Stark, 1998). In addition, a company can
expect with consecutive engineering to have many engineering changes occur, issues with
production, and lower product competiveness. These engineering changes can negatively affect the
cost of the product, as a change that occurs much farther down the process will have higher scrap
and rework associated with changes that occurred earlier in the product conception. Figure 1:
Concurrent Engineering Overview (Information Systems Planning Corporation) In stark contrast,
as evidenced in a simplistic viewpoint from Figure 1, concurrent engineering brings together these
various departments in product development, and utilizes multidisciplinary

Increasing Faculty Resistance And General Education...
Decreasing Faculty Resistance to General Education Assessment The assessment of general
education courses within the realm of higher education has been a topic of concern and some
contention as external regulatory bodies, accrediting agencies, and donors have become
increasingly interested in seeing quantifiable results from these courses. While universities strive to
maintain effective assessment of their programs, one area that consistently falls by the wayside is
the assessment of general educationcourses. These courses have been difficult for many
universities to effectively assess due to a multitude of reasons, ranging from the large number of
general education courses offered, to a lack of support and cohesion on the part of the... Show more

The anticipated outcome of the study will be a decrease in faculty resistance to assessment efforts
in general education courses.
Friedman Stone (2002) highlight an issue on this topic: that colleges and departments are receiving
pressure, both externally, from regulatory and accrediting bodies, and internally, from board
members and upper administration, to expand upon general education assessment efforts (Friedman
Stone, 2002). This pressure is falling on the faculty who teach these courses. The faculty, in turn,
are resistant to administrative efforts to dictate what, if any, assessments are being given in their
classes. Although Friedman Stone address this resistance, more research must be done on how to
effectively overcome it. In another article, Banta et Al. (1993), stated that, there is tension between
the two principle purposes of assessment: demonstrating accountability and improving curricula,
instruction, and student services. Governing and accrediting bodies are more concerned with
demonstrating accountability since the stipulations of their investment in a university are measured
through quantifiable program benchmarks. However, the teaching faculty value assessment in
terms of curriculum improvement and as a way to refine instructional methodology. Banta et Al s
quote highlights this disconnect. According to another article published by Kramer (2006) the
tension

Universal Life Insurance Vs. Variable Universal Life...
A life insurance policy is a contract with an insurance company. It has premium payments, the
insurance company provides a cash payment, known as a death benefit, to beneficiaries upon the
insured s death. After conducting the research, I determined that the two options of selecting the
right and affordable life insurances are MassMutual and Principal Life Insurances. MassMutual
offers Life Time Protection with Life Insurance, flexible payments, Universal Life Insurance and
additional protection and investment options with Variable Universal Life Insurance. Whole Life
Insurance is a permanent policy which gives you guaranteed protection for your loves ones that
last a lifetime. You earned cash value, which you can use however you want. Participating whole
life insurance is eligible to earn dividends, which can increase the death benefit and the cash value.

Why Is Medea Filicide
Argumentative Essay Rough Draft Filicide is the deliberate act in which a parent kills his or her
own children. In Euripides Medea, Medea commits filicide along with murder of a princess.
Medea was married to a man named Jason who divorced her and married the princess, Glauce.
Medea was so upset by this that she killed his new wife and her and Jasons children. When Medeas
quest for revenge leads her to slaughter innocent beings, and some call her justified, but there
are many reasons why this is not the case. Those who believe Medea was just in her murders
agree that Medea was betrayed by Jason in his breaking of marriage oaths, and in order to bring
justice, feels the need to bring suffering to him. Kim Zarins refers to Medea as ВЁa victim of
Jason s false loveВЁ (Zarins 2) Medea loved him so passionately and then hated him so much that
she was unaware of except her desire for vengeance. David Allsop said,ВЁ Medea s love of Jason

Dictionary.com defines justice as ВЁthe administering of deserved punishment or rewardВЁ
(Justice). As Princess Glauce her children did nothing to deserve their murders, Medea is clearly
unjust in this act. But in order to hurt Jason as much as possible, which, in her opinion, is only
fair, Medea takes away what was most important to him: his children and his new wife, a
potential child bearer. David Sacks says, ВЁThe primary purpose of marriage in ancient Greece
was to produce childrenВЁ (1). Jason said, ВЁI wanted... to be the father of royal children bound
by blood to our two children: a thing which would have brought welfareВЁ (Euripides ?). Jason
makes it clear that being a father is very important to him, not only to his living children, but
hopefully to royal children in the future. Medea takes away this opportunity, causing maximum

Erich Maria Remarque, All Quiet in the Western Front expresses the emotions and physical
states that soldiers experience in battles. The novel illustrates great struggle that Paul, a young
soldier that voluntarily enrolled in war has to go through in order to survive. Eager and ready to
join Paul sees the horror of war. In contrast, Joseph Boyden tells a story between two best friends
that join the war and become professional snipers. Elijah and Xavier, growing up from a native
culture, Xavier strictly follows his native beliefs while Elijah loses knowledge of his native

Realizing the true meaning of war Paul starts to go into depression, entering a state where is
unable to feel or care for anyone. In addition of the impact of death, Paul is constantly
questioning why they must fight and kill, showing care and affection even for his enemies. This
is shown after capturing Russian soldiers and keeping them as slaves Paul comes across as
seeing them as human, where Paul says, A word of command has made these silent figures our
enemies; a word of command might transform them into our friends (Remarque, 193). Showing
hostility for the Russian slaves that he feels can be friends. Questions to why they are enemies,
he sees that commanding the silent soldiers make them enemies but with no war they are
friends. With all these men having families and children he cannot kill take a father away from
their family. In an end result Paul has no reason to live and can t live in a world the constant
killing of innocent lives. This is seen when Paul sees no more healing to life, after meeting his
family on leave he cannot feel the same way for others. Unable to express his feelings or talk
about the experiences from war, Paul becomes ready to die, He had fallen forward and lay on the
earth as though sleeping. Turning him over one saw that he could not have suffered long; his face
had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come (Remarque, 296). Entering a

Cultural Differences In Two Kinds And Catch The Moon
Stories are the same in many ways, although, one reads them for their differences and the
differences are what matters. The two short stories, Two Kinds and Catch the Moon are polar
opposites and exactly the same simultaneously. Their cultures are extremely different but those
differences are what make the theme for the stories, which is to overcome a struggle in life you
have to be devoted to overcoming it, applicable the same way
The short story Catch the Moon has a theme that is impacted by its surroundings and cultural
setting. Catch the Moon is about a boy named Louis who goes through the tragedy along with his
father of his mother dying. He then starts becoming a delinquent, however after seeing a girl, he

The cultural difference in the story is probably the largest contrast of the stories. In Two Kinds the
mother out of tradition is strict with her daughter making her do things that she thinks are the
best for her, while on the other hand in Catch the Moon the father lets his son do as he pleases
but still wishes the best for him. Culture wise the stories are opposite however on the side of
theme they share many similarities. Louis from Catch the Moon was trying to persevere on and
move forward with life after his mother died, on the other hand the daughter from Two Kinds
was also trying to move on and do different things and succeed, they aren t identical however they
share similar qualities such as being able to persevere through hard times. Each of their cultures
also impacted the theme in the same way, while one story was laid back and the other way strict
and harsh they still in the end came of with similar points to be put across. Each story compared
shows that people from different worlds can have the same problems and be impacted by events
the same way as others from other places can

The Importance Of Underage Drinking
There are those milestone ages that everyone is anxious to reach. We can t wait to be 13 because
we re finally considered teenagers. We can t wait to turn 16 so we can finally slide behind the
steering wheel and drive on our own for the first time, a big step on the way to adulthood and
independence. We can t wait to turn 18 because we re finally considered adults, can vote, and
even enlist in the military in order to serve our country if we choose. Finally, and most importantly
it seems, we can t wait to turn 21 so that we can legally drink alcohol. In fact, it seems that some
teens are so anxious about that last step to adulthood that some don t even wait until the legal
drinking ageto consume alcohol. This has resulted in underage drinking

The Underground Man In Feodor Dostoevsky s Notes From The...
I loved to fall into the common rut, and had a whole hearted terror of any kind of eccentricity in
myself. This quote from Notes from the Underground, by Feodor Dostoevsky inspired the theme
for my first paper. While the underground man displayed more of the tragedy of life, Emily
Dickinson s poem showed the beauty behind the tragedy. The underground man and Emily
Dickinsonhave experienced isolation towards society.
The way that the underground man describes something may come off as rude and sounding very
angry, but Emily Dickinson can describe something so similar to what the underground man says,
but it won t come off as rude, it sounds beautiful instead, even though she may not be describing a
beautiful situation. Then close the Valves of her attention Like Stone from this quote we notice
more isolation and cold hearted references that also relate to the underground man.
The underground man doesn t find that there is beauty in his life, since he has been all alone and
no one has ever treated him nicely or given him attention, possibly because he has never given
someone attention or have treated someone nicely. Dealing with his fragile personality and ego, the
Underground Man will often hate others in return for being hated, which is not the easiest way to
make friends. He thinks he deserves so much, yet he never does anything to deserve attention from
anyone. I could have forgiven blows, but I could not forgive his having moved me without noticing
me. This is

How Did Napoleon Bonaparte Impact On Society

Materialism In The Victorian Era
In the Victorian era, entertainment was very different, having hobbies, acquired skills equally
important to them were group activities such as sГ©ances, a quiet, peaceful environment an
excellent condition for mediums to thrive also develop physical phenomenon. Unlike today s hectic
lifestyles and materialism, coupled with modern day distractions such as antisocial mobile phones,
people look for different avenues to rest furthermore relax wanting out of the rat race, a world away
from reality and seeking the truth of life after death. The Victorian era environment is different
from today due to this mental mediumshipis more prevalent.
To explain the different between physical and mental mediumship, we will look at two words,
ectoplasm and mind, I will also be discussing perception in addition control, I will expand on these
words.
Looking at materialisation and the physical mediums of the Victorian era dedicated to such an
extent that they could produce ectoplasm allowing materialisation of the discarnate spirit. Two
things are essential for materialisation production, physical energy and ectoplasm, therefore, it
required the directing powers of spirit intelligence and the psychic power of the medium. The
ectoplasm is a substance extracted from the medium s mouth, nose, ears and occasionally the solar
plexus; linked to the medium and spirit like an umbilical cord of a mother and baby in the womb,
to some degree the sitters contribute by spirit using their energy, at

  • 2. Abortion for Underage Children Should Require Parental... Underage people are prohibiting smoking, drinking, or going in field trips without their parents permission. Therefore, how can a teenage girl have an abortion without the approval of her parents? Abortion itself is a controversial subject, and underage abortion is even more controversial. Minors should not have an abortionwithout the consent of their parents or their legal guardians for a variety of reasons. First, most adolescents are not mature enough to make decisions that will change their lives forever. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius state, Some older adolescents have the cognitive ability and capacity to reason similarly to an adult. However, neuroimaging studies... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Parents must be included in their children s decisions because parents can influence their children in a significant way. For instance, parental consent laws reduce the minor abortion rate by 19 percent (qtd. in Davis). A 2008 study done by Michael J. New, Ph.D. shows that parental involvement laws reduce the abortion rate among 17 years old by 18.3 percent, among 16 years old by 14.3 percent, and among 15 years old by 8.6 percent (qtd. in Davis). These statistics show that the states that require parental involvement laws the abortion rates decline greatly. Sometimes, teens want to have an abortion because they are afraid of their parents. However, if the law requires minors to inform their parents about their pregnancy and the possibility of an abortion, their parents will be able to help them. If a teen does not inform her parents about her being pregnant, this teen will never know if her parents would have been supportive and guide her through this difficult process. Finally, the most crucial reason to why parental consent laws for abortion should be legal is the potential medical dangerous that can occur before and after an abortion (Earll). Parents that are aware of their children desire to have an abortion and support their children s decisions can provide important medical history to a physician (Christian Med.). A minor may not be fully conscious of a family history that makes surgical or medical abortion ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. A Brief Note On Workers Creating Their Own Exploitation Soc 101 Alexandria Todoruk S.Enns Section 03 September 20,2014 Workers Creating Their Own Exploitation In a modern society we are led to believe that there is a fair exchange taking place when workers(working force?) sells their labour power ( Gary Lapon, 2011.).( define this) Karl Marx believed that the working class were being exploited through laborious jobs. In today s society wages are determined by the current cost of living within provinces across Canada. Usually the wage workers receive do not allow for many to live a comfortable life yet we continue to work these jobs as they feel we have no other option. This feeling of desperation comes from the term wage slavery (cite ), where one feels as though they are stuck working a job that makes them unhappy, so they remain feeling successful or are able to meet the cost of living. As a result of wage slavery, employees come into work on days that they had previously booked off, are frightened to call in sick when sick and often take abuse from their boss. Employees are showing up with their work persona, believing that these low wages are equal when in reality they are not (S.Enns, 2014) Employers profit from their employees without employees being completely aware of it. Employers want their workers to produce more and produce it efficiently, without increasing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Glorious Revolution In American History 1.The Glorious Revolution In 1688, the Protestant Queen Mary and her husband, William of Orange, took the British throne from King James II in a bloodless coup. The Glorious Revolution had significant long term effects on American history in that the Bill of Rights and the Act of Toleration, passed in Englandin 1689, influenced attitudes and events in the colonies. Even more significant, the overthrow of James II set a precedent for the removal of a hated monarch. 2.Aztecs This was an empire that comprised of the Mesoamerican people who were conquered by the Spanish under Hernando CortГ©s, 1519 1528. It was by the stroke of a pen, changed the conflict from a war to restore the Union to a struggle to end slavery It was not until January 1, 1863, that President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. 6.Antietam This was far most the terrible battle of the age. It was the bloodiest single day in American history. Some 6,400 soldiers on both sides were killed, and another 17,000 were wounded. A Union officer counted hundreds of dead bodies lying in rows and in piles. The scene was sickening, harrowing, horrible. 7.The Whiskey Rebellion Soon after the Battle of Fallen Timbers, the Washington administration resolved on another show of strength in the backcountry, this time against the so called Whiskey Rebellion. The whiskey rebellion had happened because Hamilton had started taxing on liquor which was levied in 1791. This made the farmers angry because it taxed their most profitable commodity. 8.Anaconda Plan This plan was issued which involved imposing a naval blockade on southern ports and slowly crushing resistance on all fronts. • 5. Comparing Blood Wedding And Yerma The greatest Spanish dramatist and poet, Frederico Lorca, wrote two books with very different plots, yet the literary elements included were very similar The Blood Wedding and Yerma portray the political and sociological views that are customary to Spain, such as male dominance, as well as family honor. In addition, both The Blood Wedding and Yerma, contain the theme of human will fighting against human destiny, encompassing a broad depiction of Spanish ideology. The Blood Wedding and Yerma consistently exemplify the dominance of men in correspondence to the inferiority of women. During this time in Spain, that mentality was the norm, and widely accepted. Lorca portrays this mindset vividly in both of these novels,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I know she s a good girl. Isn t she? Quiet. Hard working. She bakes her bread and sews her skirts...(Lorca 5) The Bridegroom s mother represents Spain s society as a whole, in regard to the woman s role to be Quiet, hard working, to bake and to sew. She doesn t inquire if she s pretty, or intelligent, etc, she only wants to know what she s going to do for her son. Lorca gives the reader the opportunity to sympathize with the Bride, and her lack of true identity, due to a distorted society. Yerma, though a completely different story line, portrays an even greater sense of male dominance, and female minority. Lorca ambiguously creates an ongoing dialogue between a married couple, Juan and Yerma, allowing us to see the extent of male dominance in this culture. Juan, is a very prideful, controlling husband is scolding his wife Yerma. JUAN. Don t you know the kind of man I am? The sheep in the fold, and the women in their houses. You go out too much. Haven t you heard me say that from the beginning? (Lorca, 92). Throughout the story, Juan is reprimanding his wife over different things, primarily over her desire for a child, that isn t remotely mutual, but this time Lorca uses Juan to define the control that men have over the women. He makes a very strong point regarding how demanding Juan is, having a huge impact on this generation, because this level of control over women is something we can barely relate to. Lorca then uses Yerma, to expound on the male ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois Essay William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, born in 1868, was a scholar, activist, and philosopher, born into the era of Reconstruction and lynching. Though he accomplished much in his life, Du Bois is largely known for helping found the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and writing one of the most prominent works in American critical racetheory, The Souls of Black Folk. Du Bois made it his life s work to contest racismthrough self assertion, humanize black peopleacross the globe, and find a way to integrate black society and white American society. Much of his rhetoric focused on double consciousness and the veil, separate but closely related concepts that Du Bois used to describe the experience of Americans, both black and white. While Du Bois passed away a mere day before the March on Washington in 1963, his rhetoric remains vital to anti racist philosophy; for today, Americans live in an age of colorblind racism. It is a commonly held amongst white Americans belief that all Americans are treated equally and fairly, often citing the civil rights movements of the 1960 s in which the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the Civil Rights Act of 1968 came to be. However, as of 2016, 42% of black Americans are dissatisfied in regards to how they are treated, while a mere 15% of white Americans are dissatisfied with the treatment of black Americans.1 Much of Du Bois rhetoric focused on education; more specifically, how to use the role of institutions, ... • 7. Six Decisions That Will Change Your Life Six Decisions that Will Change Your Life: Mature John 4:7 15 This week is the third week of our sermon series that accompanies our small group series based on Tom Berlin s book 6 Decisions That Will Change Your Life. While we all make many decisions each day, these are 6 monumental decisions of our Christian journey. The first week we heard about the Decision to Follow, and last week it was the Decision for a New Life. This week we will discover what it means to make the Decision to Mature. Let us pray and begin. Prayer. Our scripture reading this morning opens with a Samaritan woman, Jesus, and a well. When this woman approaches the well, Jesus asks for her to give him a drink. At this request the woman is taken aback. It was unprecedented for a Jewish man to be asking her for anything. First of all, this woman was a Samaritan. The Samaritans and the Jews schismed after disagreeing on the proper place of worship. A feud that even scripture felt the need to clarify by explaining in verse 9 Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans. Second, she was meeting Jesus at the well alone. Which alludes to her being unclean, or impure, in some way that would prevent her from getting water when all of the other women do. Jesus approaching HER at all is startling to her, if not utterly confusing. Yet still, Jesus persists, saying if you only knew who I am and the gift that is before you. If you only knew, then you would ask for a drink and be given living water. And the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Atlanta Truck Awareness Essay Let An Atlanta Truck Accident Attorney Help Protect Your Rights! According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 342,000 large trucks were involved in traffic collisions in the United States during 2013. From the data collected by the NHTSA, seventy one percent of truck accident fatalities were people in other vehicles and seventy two percent of the injuries were sustained by occupants of other vehicles. This disparity between truck drivers and occupants of other vehicles is likely caused by the difference in weight and size between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles. During a collision, the force of the impact from a commercial truck can literally rip apart or completely crush a passenger vehicle.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The trucking industry is governed by complex federal laws and regulations. You need an experienced Atlanta truck accident lawyer who understands trucking regulations and laws to protect your right to a full settlement. For example, large trucks are required to have black boxes (much like the boxes in airplanes) that record critical information such as speed and braking immediately prior to a collision. If you do not hire an attorney with experience handling large truck accident claims, your attorney may fail to take quick action to protect the evidence on the truck s black box. This could be the evidence you need to prove the truck driver was at fault for the collision. You must prove fault in order to receive compensation for your injuries. Furthermore, insurance companies for the trucking industry aggressively defend truck accident claims because large truck accident claims are usually quite substantial. Therefore, insurance companies have teams of professionals who immediately begin investigating the case to limit the company s liability. Aggressive insurance adjusters and investigators pursue accident victims to attempt to obtain evidence to use against them or pressure them into settling the claim prior to consulting with an Atlanta personal injury ... What Is Vygotsky s Zone Of Proximal Development Lindsey Loveless Developmental Psychology Psyc 307.502 Observation Assignment Through out this assignment I planned to observe Vygotsky s Sociocultural Theory of Cognitive Development. Vygotsky s theory describes learning as a process through social interaction, which plays a major role in the development of children. A second aspect of Vygotsky s theory is Zone of Proximal Development. A Zone of Proximal Development is the difference between what someone is learning, such as a child, can do without help versus what they can do with help. • 12. Dr Milgram s Experiment On Obedience And Authority Figures Pioneering Psychologist Stanley Milgram once said, Ordinary people, simply doing their jobs, and without any particular hostility on their part, can become agents in a terrible destructive process. Obedience is like a narcotic; under its influence, even a strong willed person can do horrible things to others without a second thought. The only way a member of society submitting to powerful authority can escape being obedient is to live completely isolated. Subjects usually follow the orders given by a leader without a second thought, with many going the extra mile despite the mental and physical harm they could cause others. In order to satisfy an authority figure, people are willing to hurt mentally, abuse physically, or even murder others in cold blood because humans are born with the urge to comply an authoritarian figure. This behavior is well represented and tested in Professor Stanley Milgram s experiment on obedience to authority figures conducted in 1961 to 1963 at Yale University. In this experiment Milgram got several participants to be teachers and students. Then made the teachers to ask the students questions, and shock the students every time they got an answer wrong. The shocks given to the the students got stronger for each answer, and the maximum shock at 450 volts was deadly. The students were actually just actors who acted as if they were getting shocks, but actually they did not get any shock. This experiment was conducted to see how far the teachers were ... • 15. Makeup Industry Analysis Paper For the black woman struggling to find the right shade of makeup have no fear! It has always been very difficult to find shades of foundation that represent the numerous numbers of shades the melanin filled woman, or man, comes in. The beauty industry is now expanding! Each of these products has been evaluated first hand by friends, family, top beauty gurus, and me. I will evaluate the price, product coverage, and color spectrum of each product. The price determines affordability and product quality. Product coverage tells how much surface area the makeup will cover and how much product is used to achieve that coverage. The final and perhaps most important quality of a foundation brand is the color spectrum available. If a brand only limits itself to the skin tones of a light skin African American or even a tanned Caucasian then that brand is not considered POC, People of Color, friendly. The United States views whaling very differently than Japan does. It is a complicated and controversial topic. Many people have opinions about whale hunting. However, everyone should know both sides of the whale hunting issues before they act on the issue. To start out I am going to tell you a little about whaling. The first whale hunters were in the prehistoric times. At first they would just kill and eat beached whales. That became such a habit that they started hunting them. Most whale hunters use harpoons, guns, lances, or bombs that blow up inside the whale. They use catcher boats, or kayaks. In 1925, whalers developed ... They think that whales are a particular interest to citizens of the United States. Japan started whaling way back in the 2nd Century BC. They whale because they have whale meat as part of their diet. In 1946, whale meat was not considered special food anymore but was necessary to keep the Japanese healthy and alive because they depended on it for so long. People ate whale meat as a source of protein whether they liked it or not. In 1947, about 47% of the total animal protein was whale meat. Until the 1960 s, whale meat continued to be their main source of protein. In 1962, the whaling industry recorded 226,000 tons of whale meat; this was the highest amount throughout the history of the Japanese whaling. • 17. Analysis Of How Soon Is Now By John Morrissey The Smiths are widely considered a band with lyrics constantly bordering on poetry, and Morrissey s song writing ability was and still is unparalleled. Songs like their 1985 hit how soon is now? broke through this barrier, with lyrics based on and taken from famous literature such as George Elliot s Middemarch, and the end product being one of the most lyrically complex and emotive songs ever composed, improved only by the solemn strumming of the band behind the lyrical genius of Morrissey. The profoundness of this comment is only recognizable when one considers the struggle to find somebody to love them in a world where their attraction to somebody of the same sex was not only questioned but attacked, and the sense of isolation felt by people such as Morrissey, after spending their nights searching for romantic connection, but frequently ending at home ... Another problem that the prison system face is that after an inmate is released from prison, they have a very high probability to repeat the offenses that they went to prison for originally. Halfway houses have been a proven way to increase the chance of success for inmates once they have finished their sentence, and this keeps them from further burdening an already straining system. The Bureau of Prisons spends a large amount of money housing, feeding, and attempting to rehabilitate convicts. Given the current laws in place, it is hard to offset the costs required to run those prisons. Residents participating in halfway house programs are extremely low cost when compared to those inmates residing in the prison system. The differences in costs can be associated the lower amount of compensation for staff, smaller facilities, and cheaper utilities. The residents of halfway houses are required to give 25 percent of the gross income they earn to the Bureau of Prisons. Given the large difference in cost factors, halfway houses are a very economical way for the Bureau of Prisons to save money on the last six months of an inmate s sentence. • 28. Literary Analysis Of Debra Marquart s The Horizontal World The upper Midwest is a region often viewed as unimportant or boring due to its seemingly endless plains and uneventful daily life. In her memoir, The Horizontal World, Debra Marquart challenges this view to show her fondness of the upper Midwest. By using techniques including juxtaposition, realism, and references to well known people/works, Marquart effectively manipulates her audience to agree with her perception of the region. Juxtapositioning is typically used in a narrative to show multiple events occurring at the same time or contrasting views which reveal a claim. In this text, Marquet employs a creative use of the technique by using both real events and referring to texts about the region in comparison to one another. For example, Marquart compares Garrison Keillors Lake Wobegon, in which she references, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average with the Coen Brothers , Fargo, which she reminds the audience is, the macabre land of murder by woodchipper. By comparing these two dramatically contrasting works, Marquart places the idea in the audience s head that this could be a region containing vast stories and interesting people. In addition, both works are well known, giving the region a sense of importance. The POS system is a perpetual inventory counting method that electronically records items immediately upon their point of sale (Stevenson, 2015, pg. 552). In other words, as a cashier scans a customer s groceries, each scanned item is automatically recorded in the system and deducted from the store s inventory. Implementing a point of salewould benefit a business s inventory managementfunction in several ways. First, the POS system will provide managers with a continuous flow of updated information (Stevenson, 2015, pg. 552). As a result, the information will provide more accuracy when used for sales forecasts and analysis, which substantially affect inventory decisions. Continuously, this inventory system would also allow greater flexibility in the sense that it can be wirelessly linked to the main company s inventory system, creating a network of the company s inventory systems. The POS system is capable of tracking many operations at once and can be modified according to management s needs (MacCarthy, n.d.). This flexibility would undoubtedly benefit a large company like Wegman s with many store locations. Lastly, the system is able to help businesses maintain a high level of customer service. • 34. Analysis Of The Book The Demon In another of Kawamoto s work, The Demon , the mother figure in the film undergoes a transformation that impacts family negatively: old age. The Demon begins by presenting the mother figure lying in bed, dying and unable to care for herself. Shortly after, we see her difficult life flash before her eyes a life full of loneliness and sadness. The scene later switches to her sons going to hunt for food. During their hunting trip, the sons notice something follows them and eventually realize it was a demon. They immediately go home, only to watch their mother transform into said demon. The mother s transformation into a demon signifies how motherhood during old age transforms women into unwanted beings. Even though the sons love their mother, her frail condition hinders them, as she cannot assist around their home in any way. To describe this situation, Rebecca Copeland, in her essay, Mythical Bad Girls, compares a mother at old age to a womb that devours, she gives life and then takes it back. This comparison exhibits negative views about mothers. First, it shows how society views women solely as vessels for reproduction. Copeland s comparison of mothers to their reproductive organs not only objectifies women, but it also suggests women have no other purpose than reproducing. Second, Copeland s comparison implies that while a mother may bring life, she also takes it away through her requiring care during old age. Due to a mother requiring care, she impedes upon ... The Child That Lives From Within Jazmine Feijo Professor Don Moore AHSS 1210 21 November 2014 The Child that Lives from Within The social sciences often question if psychopathic behaviour is innate or a product of social environment. The answer seems difficult to discern because it is not split down into equal parts of nurture and nature, but rather rely on one another for a better understanding. In the movie Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock, Norman Bates downfall proposes how crucial a healthy childhood is to the mental state of developing child. Contrary to nature focused beliefs, not all human behaviour comes from an individual s genetic makeup, but rather through experiences that become ingrained in the mind like scripture (Cooke 25). Theories proposed by Sigmund Freud and other research comparing the relation between psychopathy and environment can help to rationalize the reasons behind Norman Bates unsuccessful childhood, the impact of his parent child relationship on his self perception, and the influence of his upbringing on external relationships. Despite the age of the theories and the year of the film, the question concerning if Norman Bates mental state is innate or a gradual creation provides an understanding of current parent child relationship issues. To be familiar with the cringing extent of vacant family bonds emphasizes how necessary it is for parents to build a strong relationship with their child or suffer the consequences. The women were destined to live a life of a house wife, she was only seen competent enough in society to raise and educate kids and take care of her household. In both countries, the revolution increased the population s attention to political matters and made liberty and equality very important to the people. Unfortunately, Women did not claim any rightsduring this time, but the women of the French Revolution and the activities they were implicated in heavily influenced the movement and struggle for equal rights. Their March on Versailles, their political clubs and pamphlets, and the prominent women political figures were vital assets that influenced the struggle and movement for equal rights during the 19th and 20th century in France. During that period, due to the abolition of the censorship and the liberty to publish, some writers argued for the women s struggle for liberation and suffrage like Judith Sargent Murray with her Essay On the Equality of the Sexes , which protested the idea that men had greater intellectual capacities then women, As well as other French writers such as Olympe de Gouges who wrote several plays, short stories and novels in which she expressed that women and men are different, but this shouldn t stop them from equality under the law. I wish I could say the men are guiltier of this, but women are just as guilty when it comes to being selfish. However, in the two poems To His Coy Mistress by Andrew Marvell and To the Virgins to Make Much of Time by Robert Herrick we see many similarities in their efforts to get with a girl that they like. They both try to convince the girls that they need to live in the now. Also they use word pictures to make their interest, which is getting sex, more understandable and seem less important than it is. Lastly, both have coy lovers who are not quite as interested in having sex with them. These men are using whatever they can to get the girl and they share similar tactics to do it. Andrew is telling his girl that he would love to get to know her better, but time is always right behind him pushing him forward. They both use these great word pictures; however, to me it appears that neither of them is confident that the lover will say yes. Kathryn Hogan states in her article The Real Reason Men Are Lonely in Lust that Energy of attraction created, that energy forms a bond . This is important because Andrew and Herrick are trying to get their lovers with fancy words and word pictures but, if their lover loved them then they would already have some kind attraction and bound and wouldn t need convincing. • 38. The Power Of The National Territory Taking in account Max Weber definition of a successful state, a failed state can be defined as a state fully incapable of exercising power within its boundaries, its failure to provide basic goods to its citizens, such as political and social needs, and incapable of exercising the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force. Although in a weak states, like Colombia, Indonesia, Thailand, the state is still able to provide some political goods to its citizens and exercise power in much of the national territory, in a failed state this is not the case. The failed state is indeed unable to provide basic and economic needs to its citizens. The nature of the failed state varies across geographical regions, colonial history, and political circumstances. However, they share some economic and political features. Human insecurity pervades in every aspects of a failed state, from social tensions to civil wars, from geography to corruption and external actors, whose presence in many cases proceeds to worsen situations. The vast majority of failed states lack in security and violate most of the human rights of their citizens while at the same time fail to ensure basic social services. Moreover, failed states are characterized by huge inequalities. • 40. Why Is Roald Dahl The Best Essay Have you ever wondered who and what makes a good author? Well I think Roald Dahl is the best, and I think he is the best because Roald Dahl has made so many good books that were turned into movies like for example, Matilda, Charlie and the chocolate factory and The BFG.So it must be easy or brilliant enough to be turned into a very good movie to watch.Roald Dahlhas written so many books in his lifetime. Roald Dahl was not just an author he was also a spy, an ace fighter pilot, a chocolate historian and a medical inventor. In this following essay there will be three acceptable reasons of why he is the best author. The first reason of why he is the best is because Roald Dahl puts an image into our heads without the illustrations he just describes it really well with just words. Like for example he put Imagery when Mr.Wonka was describing the vermicious knids in Charlie and the great glass elevator. The way he said it was like this The vermicious Knid can turn itself into any shape it wants. It has no bones. Their body is really one huge muscle, enormously strong but it can just as easily give itself two legs like a human. I think it is a very good explanation of a vermicious knid and it actually seems kind of creepy. In Matilda when Hortensia was describing Ms.Trunchbull I think Roald Dahl had made a pretty clear explanation when he was making Hortensia describe how terrible Ms. Trunchbull. Advantages And Disadvantages Of Exclusive Jurisdiction Statutory exclusive jurisdiction is a form of the international jurisdiction, which is always regulated by the mandatory norms of the law and which may not be overridden by an agreement on jurisdiction by the defendant s voluntary submission to the different forum. It has imperative character and stands on the fact that the matters involved in the exclusive jurisdictionrules are closely linked to the state sovereignty or the territory of the state and in these situations, the state interest prevails over the private. This means that the state has a special interest to make its courts hear the dispute despite other controversial circumstances (such as for instance the agreement on the jurisdiction of a different court), exclude any possibility to transfer the case and the most important, do not allow the recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments, which are made with the violation of the exclusive jurisdiction rules. • 42. Alienation In The Garden Of Eden The first and one of the most popular narratives in the Hebrew bible is the story of the Garden of Eden. Here, in the book of Genesis, the LORD God places Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and commands them to eat freely in of any tree in the garden, but to not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It doesn t take long for them to disobey this command, leading to separation from the LORD God. The story of the Garden of Edenserves as a foundational narrative for early Jews by portraying Adam and Eves alienation from the garden, from each other, and from God, revealing the need for a way back to unification with the LORD God like there was in the garden. The first thing the Lord God does after creating Adam is make a place for him to live in Eden, but Adam s actions get him sent out of the garden. After breathing life into Adam, the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed (Gen 2:7 8). Eden when translated means delight, showing that the garden that the LORD God made for Adam was a divine place. Then the LORD God commanded Adam you may eat freely of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat (Gen 2:16 17). This is the one command the LORD God gave to Adam, but he disobeys because of his selfishness and is deserving of death. • 43. Dual Engineering And Integrated Product Development Question #1) Concurrent engineering (also known as simultaneous engineering and integrated product development (IDP)) was originally defined in 1988 by the Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA) in its report The Role of Concurrent Engineering in Weapons System Acquisition (Stark, 1998). This practice is opposite to consecutive engineering, where various components of a business (such as marketing, manufacturing, and design) are siloed with one another. Consecutive engineering leads to a throw it over the wall mentality, as one business component such as marketing performs the tasks required for its division and then would send it down the line to design. This fragmented business structure leads to quality issues in the product development, which results in greater cost and slower development (Stark, 1998). In addition, a company can expect with consecutive engineering to have many engineering changes occur, issues with production, and lower product competiveness. These engineering changes can negatively affect the cost of the product, as a change that occurs much farther down the process will have higher scrap and rework associated with changes that occurred earlier in the product conception. Figure 1: Concurrent Engineering Overview (Information Systems Planning Corporation) In stark contrast, as evidenced in a simplistic viewpoint from Figure 1, concurrent engineering brings together these various departments in product development, and utilizes multidisciplinary ... Decreasing Faculty Resistance to General Education Assessment The assessment of general education courses within the realm of higher education has been a topic of concern and some contention as external regulatory bodies, accrediting agencies, and donors have become increasingly interested in seeing quantifiable results from these courses. While universities strive to maintain effective assessment of their programs, one area that consistently falls by the wayside is the assessment of general educationcourses. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The anticipated outcome of the study will be a decrease in faculty resistance to assessment efforts in general education courses. Friedman Stone (2002) highlight an issue on this topic: that colleges and departments are receiving pressure, both externally, from regulatory and accrediting bodies, and internally, from board members and upper administration, to expand upon general education assessment efforts (Friedman Stone, 2002). This pressure is falling on the faculty who teach these courses. The faculty, in turn, are resistant to administrative efforts to dictate what, if any, assessments are being given in their classes. Although Friedman Stone address this resistance, more research must be done on how to effectively overcome it. In another article, Banta et Al. (1993), stated that, there is tension between the two principle purposes of assessment: demonstrating accountability and improving curricula, instruction, and student services. Governing and accrediting bodies are more concerned with demonstrating accountability since the stipulations of their investment in a university are measured through quantifiable program benchmarks. However, the teaching faculty value assessment in terms of curriculum improvement and as a way to refine instructional methodology. Banta et Al s quote highlights this disconnect.
