This document discusses how digital tools and platforms can help researchers measure the impact of their work. It explores developing a digital footprint and identity through platforms like ORCID, ResearcherID, Scopus, Google Scholar Citations, Academia.edu and Mendeley. These tools allow researchers to track citations, collaborations and the broader influence of their work beyond traditional publications. The document advocates that researchers should utilize emerging social media and online platforms to increase the reach of their research and better develop their overall research identity and impact.
E-Learn 2014 Abstract: Today digital footprints are left all over the Internet for others to find. This article reviews the means through which scholars can organize research and connect digital scholarship for increased visibility and impact. A survey of the literature on scholarship tools to provide connections for publishing records, academic citations, and digital identity management was done. The authors reviewed Researcher ID, ORCID, and Google Scholar Citations. The numbers of portals for synthesizing research output and related identity management platforms are increasing; however, understanding what this research impact might look like in the digital age can provide questions for assessment for understanding these traces of scholarship online.

The Current Status of Open Access to Scholarship in Japansmine
This document summarizes the current status of open access to scholarship in Japan. It discusses the growth of institutional repositories and open access journals in Japan, reaching over 1.5 million full texts. Several major developments in open access policy are noted, including mandates from the Ministry of Education and funders like JSPS. While about half of researchers report publishing in open access journals, their understanding and opinions on open access vary, with some concerns about predatory journals. Overall, Japan has made progress in open access through a collaborative "step-by-step" approach, but further policy implementation and cultural changes may still be needed.
This document is a curriculum vitae for Xiaozhong Liu, an Assistant Professor at Indiana University Bloomington. It lists his professional qualifications including a Ph.D. from Syracuse University. It also outlines his appointments at Indiana University and past internships. Finally, it provides an extensive list of his published journal articles, conference publications, and conference posters focusing on information science and technology.
Scholarly impact refers to the influence of research on scientific discovery and society. It is measured using scholarly metrics, which are used to evaluate research impact, determine promotions and tenure, and assess the competitiveness of institutions and journals. Traditional metrics are usually based on publications and citations, while altmetrics capture newer interactions like downloads, views, and social media mentions. It can be difficult to measure the impact of books due to factors like slower citation rates, diverse formats, and faster obsolescence compared to articles. A variety of metrics capture different aspects of books' impacts.
Title: Social impact evaluations of digital youth work: tensions between visi...Alicja Pawluczuk
Purpose: This paper presents empirical research, which explores the ways digital youth workers perceive, and evaluate, the social impact of their work. There is currently a research gap with regard to the measurement of the social impact of digital youth work. Thus, the aims of this study are: (1) to contribute to the scholarly discussion on the social impact of youth digital participation, (2) to elicit, and analyse, youth workers’ perceptions of the social impact evaluation of digital youth work, (3) and to propose recommendations for further research in this area.
Method: Twenty semi-structured interviews with digital youth workers in the United Kingdom were carried out in mid-2017. The interviews were based on themes drawn from a prior literature review exploring the areas of youth development, digital youth participation, social impact, and social impact evaluation.
Analysis: Research data analysis was guided by a ‘grounded theory’ methodological approach, and conducted using NVivo 10 software. Results show a clear alignment with the existing literature, in the areas of youth participation, and social impact assessment and evaluation. The analysis presented here focuses on three areas of tension between the study participants’ vision, and the reality of the social impact evaluation of digital youth work: (1) Favouring positive stories of impact. (2) Chasing the impact proofs instead of examining the change, (3) Following an interactive youth project with an unengaging evaluation process.
Conclusion: Current (externally governed) evaluation practices, limit digital youth workers’ abilities to critically examine and provide feedback on impact. Acknowledging that there is a need for further research in this area, this study propose three recommendations, primarily aimed at digital youth work funding bodies: (1) Facilitating serendipitous interactions in digital youth work, (2) The further research required in order to provide digital youth workers with a set of tools - or guidance - in order to measure and understand the social impact of their work, (3) Adopting playful methods of evaluation in digital youth work

The Challenge of Deeper Knowledge Graphs for SciencePaul Groth
Over the past 5 years, we have seen multiple successes in the development of knowledge graphs for supporting science in domains ranging from drug discovery to social science. However, in order to really improve scientific productivity, we need to expand and deepen our knowledge graphs. To do so, I believe we need to address two critical challenges: 1) dealing with low resource domains; and 2) improving quality. In this talk, I describe these challenges in detail and discuss some efforts to overcome them through the application of techniques such as unsupervised learning; the use of non-experts in expert domains, and the integration of action-oriented knowledge (i.e. experiments) into knowledge graphs.
This document discusses developing students' critical thinking skills through peer assessment and information literacy. It defines information literacy as the ability to identify, locate, evaluate, organize and effectively use information. The document discusses how an embedded librarian model can help foster information literacy and critical thinking skills through collaboration between discipline experts and information specialists. It also examines assessing students' information literacy and critical thinking skills through coursework assignments involving essay writing, source evaluation, and peer review.

Yes, we’re open: Open science & altmetrics
Abstract: Open Science is en vogue – especially after Carlos Moedas, EU-Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, has outlined his vision for Europe along the lines of ‘open innovation, open science, open to the world’. Open science describes the transition of ‘publishing as fast as possible’ towards ‘sharing knowledge as fast as possible’. Several reasons explain the move towards openness, it is expected, for example, that open science will increase the efficiency of science. Of course, digital media and web-based environments are keys to this development, but it also requires a systemic change to transform open science from a nice-to-have-feature into the default way of performing research. Altmetrics, i.e. social media-based metrics, are often considered drivers of open science and essential tools for changing the reward system in science. When looking closer, though, severe tensions between features as well as expectations of open science and altmetrics become apparent. The talk will argue that open science only can enfold its potential if ‘openness’ is fully embraced and supported by open metrics.

Open Access emerged as a revolutionary movement in Western societies in order to solve the current scholarly communication system crises. Its diffusion in Arab countries took place in a research environment that mostly lacks national research agendas and adequate research budgets. The study aimed at exploring in detail and interpreting how participants are making sense of their lived experience with Open Access. The study adopted a phenomenological approach using Interpretative phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology. The study concluded to the following main results: The concept of Open Access is cultural response against the dominant Western concept. Its diffusion is still limited and beset by many individual and external barriers The impact of Open Access adoption remains debatable, especially since scientific publishing, Open Access included, is not an isolated industry from the dominant global economic, political and technological situation
The study adopted a phenomenological approach using Interpretative phenomenological Analysis (IPA) methodology to answer the main question: How does the Open Access movement to scientific publishing diffuse in Arab countries from the perspective of scholars/ practitioners? Two research tools were used, the critical and systematic literature review, and the semi-structured interview with ten participants. The study was divided into five chapters and a general introduction: the introduction addressed the problem of the study, its research questions, its objectives and its relevance; and briefly sketched the research design. In chapter, one, fifty-three Arab studies from 2005 to 2015, were reviewed and classified into themes and subjects. The second chapter discusses in detail the theoretical approach. The third chapter elaborates the methodology. The fourth chapter displayed the findings from the analysis of the ten interviews; seven superordinate themes with thirty themes were issued. The concluding fifth chapter discussed the results by referring to the Diffusion of Innovations theory and the adoption of a critical approach based on Western cognitive hegemony. The study concluded to the following main results: The concept of Open Access is cultural response against the dominant Western concept. Its diffusion is still limited and beset by many individual and external barriers, notably the lack of national research policies and agendas. The adoption decision by Arab institutions is an authoritative decision that comes in response to the international pressure to join the knowledge society. The impact of Open Access adoption remains debatable, especially since scientific publishing, Open Access included, is not an isolated industry from the dominant global economic, political and technological situation
