Big Data Architectural Patterns and Best Practices on AWSAmazon Web Services
The world is producing an ever increasing volume, velocity, and variety of big data. Consumers and businesses are demanding up-to-the-second (or even millisecond) analytics on their fast-moving data, in addition to classic batch processing. AWS delivers many technologies for solving big data problems. But what services should you use, why, when, and how? In this session, we simplify big data processing as a data bus comprising various stages: ingest, store, process, and visualize. Next, we discuss how to choose the right technology in each stage based on criteria such as data structure, query latency, cost, request rate, item size, data volume, durability, and so on. Finally, we provide reference architecture, design patterns, and best practices for assembling these technologies to solve your big data problems at the right cost.

Protecting your files in SharePoint and OneDrive for Business When choosing a cloud collaboration platform, the most important consideration is trust in your provider. Microsoft SharePoint and OneDrive for Business are covered by the core tenets of earning and maintaining trust: security, privacy, compliance, and transparency. With SharePoint and OneDrive, they’re your files. You own them and control them.
The Microsoft approach to securing your files involves:
1. A set of customer-managed tools that adapt to your organization and its security needs.
2. A Microsoft-built security control framework of technologies, operational procedures, and policies that meet the latest global standards and can quickly adapt to security trends and industry-specific needs.
These tools and processes apply to all Microsoft Office 365 services—including SharePoint and OneDrive—so all your content beyond files is secure.
Microsoft focuses its investments in the following areas:
1. Platform security
a. Infrastructure and processes of our datacenters
b. Strong encryption technologies (at rest and in transit)
2. Secure access and sharing
a. Restrict access to files to approved people, devices, apps, locations, and data classifications
b. Enforce who can share files and with whom
3. Awareness and insights
a. Complete understanding of how people in your organization are using SharePoint and OneDrive
b. Analyze usage to measure return on investment
c. Identify potentially suspicious activity
File security in SharePoint and OneDrive 6
4. Information governance
a. Classify what constitutes sensitive data and enforce how it can be used
b. Protect your organization in the event of litigation
c. Retain business-critical files when people leave your organization
5. Compliance and trust
a. Ensure that service operations are secure, compliant, trustworthy, and transparent
Don't be deceived by the simplified experience of managing SharePoint permissions! What appears to be harmless could tailspin to a giant mess, requiring massive cleanup. This presentation walks through real-world scenarios and pitfalls of permissions administrations, so you could learn from the mistakes of others and not end up digging yourself into a SharePoint permissions hole.

In this presentation, we will study a recent use case we implemented recently. In this use case we are working with a large, metropolitan fire department. Our company has already created a complete analytics architecture for the department based upon Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Delta Lake, Azure SQL and Azure SQL Server Analytics Services (SSAS). While this architecture works very well for the department, they would like to add a real-time channel to their reporting infrastructure.
This channel should serve up the following information: •The most up-to-date locations and status of equipment (fire trucks, ambulances, ladders etc.)
• The current locations and status of firefighters, EMT personnel and other relevant fire department employees
• The current list of active incidents within the city The above information should be visualized through an automatically updating dashboard. The central component of the dashboard will be map which automatically updates with the locations and incidents. This view should be as real-time as possible and will be used by the fire chiefs to assist with real-time decision-making on resource and equipment deployments.
In this presentation, we will leverage Databricks, Spark Structured Streaming, Delta Lake and the Azure platform to create this real-time delivery channel.
Delivering the promise of data mining and predictive analytics requires an operational platform that is agile, business-friendly and decision-centric - decision modeling with DMN and business rules.

Introduction to SharePoint Information ArchitectureGregory Zelfond
SharePoint Information Architecture is the art and science of organizing and labeling the content (documents, data, sites) to support findability and usability
We’re all busy—and it’s a common theme in most professional workplaces—with people trying to get more done with finite time and resources. For a lot of firms today, a major challenge is making sure we’re spending our precious time making the most of every business opportunity by maximizing client relationships. Marketing & BD teams need to know if they’re focusing on the opportunities, RFI’s and RFP’s with the best potential; that they are managing their firm pipeline effectively; and they are giving everyone on the team the best tools for the job—wherever they are.
That’s why firms today are focused on creating great client relationships – they need to try to reduce complexity and make it easier to maximize opportunities, provide excellent client experiences, and grow the firm.
Why should a legal or accounting firm care? Because client experience and knowledge is increasingly important for firms of all sizes – across all client interactions.
Client experience…
…is what differentiates your firm
…is how you win and keep clients for the long-term
…is how you grow your firm …and in a world where clients are mobile and social, your reputation (& brand) is more important than ever.
Today you don’t have as many contact points as you used to have, and you have to make every one count. To thrive in this ultra-competitive environment firms of all sizes have to make client experience a priority. That is why you need Dynamics 365 and xRM! What's Changed with SharePoint in the Past Few Years and Why It MattersRichard Harbridge
Office 365 and SharePoint are evolving fast. A few years ago many of us may have begun modernizing our SharePoint environments - planning an upgrade or a migration to SharePoint 2013 or even SharePoint Online. Since that time many things have changed in both SharePoint Server and Office 365, not to mention within our organizations. New services have been added, and many of those services are improving with each passing month. What approaches, strategies and rollout models are other organizations using? What can we learn from their successes?
Join us for this facilitated and interactive discussion where instead of just looking forward, we look back into key changes that we all need to understand better. This discussion will be facilitated by Richard Harbridge, a Microsoft MVP, and internationally recognized expert on Office 365 and SharePoint. Together we will discuss what has changed in the past few years for developers, IT professionals, and SharePoint leads while exploring how organizations are leveraging these services in different ways today.

The Social Enterprise In A Cloud First And Mobile First World - SPTechConRichard Harbridge
Organizations today need to be more responsive. People are more connected than ever before. The world has become a giant network, with people sharing, learning, and making decisions on the go at every second. What if you, and every person in your company could work together, like a network? What might that look like and how might social enterprise technology play a role?
While many organizations understand the benefits social technology can provide it’s often not as clear how we can go about implementing these technologies in a way that complements our organizations investments in powerful collaborative technologies like SharePoint. SharePoint is used as an enterprise collaboration platform in almost every organization, yet many organizations are still in the process of deciding why and when they should implement some of the new social capabilities or how best to leverage Social technologies like Yammer with their current investments.
Join Richard Harbridge as he shares Microsoft’s vision for Enterprise Social and the future of work. Richard will explain how and where customers are investing in social, what is changing and important to understand, and what technology investments have been made and are being made by Microsoft to help customers connect and work in a cloud first and mobile first world.

Over 50 Adoption Activities That Have Helped Organizations Get More Out Of Of...Richard Harbridge
Office 365 provides an incredible amount of value to individual employees, teams, departments and organizations. Much of this value is not realized immediately upon purchase or deployment of Office 365. The value is realized as more and more users understand, adopt and embrace the technology. So how do we drive faster, sustainable and effective adoption?
Join Richard Harbridge as he shares real world experience, advice and activities that other customers are leveraging to get more from Office 365 and drive more meaningful adoption.
Three lessons learned from attending this session:
•Why delivering continuous value from a service requires additional strategy and consideration that may not have been as applicable when you have historically deployed a technology asset.
•Visibility into the challenges other organizations have encountered around adoption and Office 365 and how they overcame those challenges.
•What practical activities (50+) you can leverage to drive greater adoption in your own organization (immediately, overtime, and even by yourself)
In recent years, workplaces have shifted significantly from in-person to remote work, and companies found that their employees have improved productivity and performance with fewer expenses.

Metaverse & The Employee Experience: What You Need To KnowRichard Harbridge
Back in the day we would use 'who installed a browser' that wasn't the default as an 'indirect signal' that denoted a level of individual interest in improving their digital productivity or experience. Nowadays we are swimming in indirect signals - from who organizes the most meetings (named if you use Audit log etc) to dynamics around networking (Viva Insights) to who uses Teams Apps (another great indirect signal of expanding productivity/investing in digital experiences).
What still works best though is direct signals like comments, nominations, champion programs (yearly and NON MANAGER & NON IT focused) and more that help identify people and map them/amplify their visibility as potential super collaborators, those with high amounts of digital debt and those who would better benefit from greater digital fitness or digital experience investments.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

WHY BUILD

“SharePoint does provide the ability for Site Owners to specify different permissions on resources. Office 365
Groups promises a permission model whereby all group members have access to the group’s resources across
workloads (e.g. conversations, files, notebook, etc.). To deliver consistency, SharePoint site collections
associated with a Group will also follow this model. So, a group (site) owner can add new permission levels
and assign to new users or groups on a resource, but would not be able to remove the permission levels
assigned to the group’s owners or members. We are working on delivering a new permissions management
UX that will allow for group (site) owners to change the group members’ permission level from Edit to Read-
only (and vice versa) but you would not be able to remove the members from resources in the SharePoint site
collection.”

Today for basic automation and integration you can do quite a bit with flow beyond
what workflows can, and they can compliment one another.
1. It’s still new.
Admin/Governance not as comprehensive (go to Logic Apps). You can’t trigger a secondary Flow from a primary,
it can be painful to reorder steps, API max connections (by app, not user), etc.
2. It Is Simplified.
Convert to Azure Logic App (one-click). There is almost no limit to what you can do when you move up to the Azure
level around process automation and integration.
3. It Provides New Options.
We don’t always have to defer to full application development if there is a way to build what is needed without the
same rigor and specialized skill set.
33. @RHARBRIDGE
The PowerApps experience is quite streamlined today. In it’s current
state users must configure and design each field/screen as desired.
1. They are “easy” and intuitive to build. Point to
the data you want to interact with and create.
MICROSOFT POWERAPPS…
34. @RHARBRIDGE
It is undoubtedly easy and intuitive to share. Considerations around access to
the data source (SQL conn is auto shared). No external sharing today.

There is a ton of potential in PowerApps with templates and shared apps across
the organization or through communities.

3. Users can build an app from templates easing the creation
of an app process for common app requirements.
MICROSOFT POWERAPPS …
36. PowerApps is a great solution for rapidly building mobile business applications.
Integration not just around data sources – PowerApps embed in SharePoint 2017.

4. They are “mobile first” forms that support multiple data
sources beyond SharePoint. Soon will be in SharePoint!
37. @RHARBRIDGE
WHAT WOULD YOU USE IT FOR?
There is a ton of potential in PowerApps with templates and shared apps across
the organization or through communities.
2. Simple “list” tracking apps that can
help coordinate things like assets, site
visits, that you want a unique UI on.
1. Simple Mobile App experiences
where you want to get employee
feedback.
3. FAQs and resource guides for
employees around products or
processes.
38. @RHARBRIDGE
No new versions.
Supported to 2026.
DO POWERAPPS REPLACE FORMS?
PowerApps does not match InfoPath and SharePoint Designer from a feature
parity perspective. It makes it easier to build business applications “without code”.

WHAT WE WILL TALK ABOUT TODAY…
2. Why This Is So Difficult In The Real World
3. How To Actually Drive This In Organizations
4. Next Steps & Resources
Your users may struggle with these questions:
Should I share via Microsoft Yammer, Microsoft Office 365 Groups, or Microsoft OneDrive?
Should I share a file in Outlook, in a meeting, from OneDrive for Business, on Yammer, in a Group, or in a SharePoint site?
What happens when your users can’t decide what technology or feature to use? They use what they know, or what’s easy; even if better options exist.
In this session, join Richard Harbridge as he helps you maximise the value of your Office 365 investment by providing the guidance you need to help your users make better, more effective decisions on how they get work done.

KANWAL
While we know the end goal is to improve meaningful adoption of Office 365, answering the question “when to use what” is not an easy thing to do. While researching this subject, and based on our extensive experience, we knew there were a few reasons why this question would be challenging to answer.
The user has an event idea,
What they want to do is share it with other people First I setup a meeting to discuss running an event with the Office 365 team. I do this in Outlook.
Then I start a Skype for Business meeting where we discuss the event and work collaboratively on a notebook.
The notebook is stored in my onedrive site initially with each meeting participant, but then after the meeting is done we create a team site for us to collaborate leading up to the launch event and I MOVE the OneNote to SharePoint. We then share/post the event invitation to our Yammer network and hold Skype Broadcast meeting or perhaps run the event on Skype for remote participants

For organizations with a multi-generation workforce, it is important to understand your demographics to know how to best find the balance of tools across the generations
If you are an organization that heavily relies on email, what are you doing for your new workers? Are you giving them the tools they need to be effective? Note: this is a generalization of observations, but any individual may cross multiple categories.

Chris Slemp has a great breakdown…
Microsoft Stream Preview & Office 365 Video
They will converge in features. Office 365 Video will be get a new name in the future. You should still use Office 365 Video and at a later time you will get a upgraded UI and new features.
I just trained my people on Office 365 Video will I have to retrain?
Microsoft Stream’s UI is designed to be intuitive and easy to use. The concepts are similar and the UI may be a little different but is not a significant change. So training content experts/gurus and admins/managers will be similar to what you have already done and should require minor investments around re-training, but not significant ones (if desired).
SharePoint Workflow and Flow?
SharePoint Workflows (& Great 3rd Part Platforms) are still a great way to automate most structured enterprise business processes today. Flow has some focus areas that SharePoint Workflow does not have which compliments process and task automation needs, especially across systems and services (like IFTTT or Zapier).
Flow includes a focus on platforms outside of SharePoint.
Flow can be triggered by web hooks into external systems. Flows can take actions and events from outside your environment and automate the movement of this data into your systems.
Flow allows users without list management rights to still create flows.
Many flows are within an individual users context. Triggering a flow for a user based on an event that happens in their Office 365 mailbox as an example only targets that user.
Flow includes a focus on the personal technologies of an individual end user allowing them to automate personal and professional processes/tasks.
Microsoft PowerApps Preview
PowerApps can be used to build rapid mobile business applications…
PowerApps, InfoPath, and SharePoint Designer…
PowerApps does not replace InfoPath and SharePoint Designer. It makes it easier to build mobile business applications “without code”. It can create forms-like applications for data in SharePoint on-premises or in O365, so there may be some scenarios where it can act as an alternative for InfoPath form development.
PowerApps is Cloud Only (no offline capability).
