Problems can be an opportunity to learn and grow together. Be positive and productive in your approach to life’s challenges. Find ways and means of solving your problems before matters run out of control. Nobody else will do it for you. You must face them head on. You don't have to let problems run your life. You can take control.
A student in your class has made a couple of borderline rude comments but may be crossing the line today. As the facilitator, how would you handle such a situation?

Where We Have Been
In the previous chapter, you learned the concept of neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to be “plastic” or “changeable”
in nature by actually growing new neural pathways when tasked with creating new thinking patterns. You also
discovered that you cannot always trust your thoughts as they can get stuck in the habit of delivering faulty
information based on self-limiting and self-sabotaging beliefs. You were also introduced to the concept of cognitive
reframing, which highlights your ability to view the same information or experience through a different and more
productive frame of reference. And finally, we shared the narrative concept of externalizing problems; the concept
invited you to examine whether your self-concept was too closely defined by common problems like procrastination,
anxiety, or overwhelm. We further examined what steps to take to start to have a constructive relationship with
externalized problems by dialoguing with them as a way of escaping their impact.
Where We Are Going
In this chapter, we will dive deeply into the concept of finding exceptions to problem-saturated stories. Returning
again to Angela, we will use her story as a teaching tool as we bring into focus exactly how the narrative process is
engineered to discover these exceptions to problems. Highlighting her process will set the stage for you to highlight
your own as you begin inquiring into your own personal narrative in a way that draws on actual evidence from your
own life story thus far.
In this chapter, you will come to find that you, like us all, have unexamined exceptions to the problem-laden beliefs
that may be hard to abandon. Because of this, you will be taught how to explore the creative process of finding
exceptions—those times when despite all odds and the many neural pathways that have already been carved so
deeply to support the dominance of problems, something exceptional still occurred (Figure 1).
Gearing Up

» To take cognitive reframing to the next level by learning how to find exceptions to your
problems (times the problem wasn’t in control)
» To understand the neuroscience behind asking the right questions and visualizing
yourself as successful in combating the effects of your problem(s)
» To see the importance of recognizing wins in your life
» To recognize that your wins are not context dependent, but “you” dependent

In general, reliabilities less than 0.60 are considered to be poor, those in the 0.70 range, acceptable, and those over 0.80 good. Thus, the internal consistency reliability of the measures used in this study can be considered to be acceptable for the job enrichment measure and good for the other measures.
It is important to note that all the negatively worded items in the questionnaire should first be reversed before the items are submitted for reliability tests. Unless all the items measuring a variable are in the same direction, the reliabilities obtained will be incorrect.
A sample of the result obtained for the Cronbach’s alpha test for job enrichment, together with instructions on how it is obtained, is shown in Output 11.3.
The reliability of the job enrichment measure is presented in the first table in Output 11.3. The second table provides an overview of the alphas if we take one of the items out of the measure. For instance, it is shown that if the first item (Jobchar1) is taken out, Cronbach’s alpha of the new three-item measure will be 0.577. This means that the alpha will go down if we take item 1 out of our measure. On the other hand, if we take out item 3, our alpha will go up and become 0.851. Note that, in this case, we would not take out item 3 for two reasons. First, our alpha is above 0.7 so we do not have to take any remedial actions. Second, if we took item 3 out, the validity of our measure would probably decrease. We did not include item 3 for nothing in the original measure!
If, however, our Cronbach’s alpha was too low (under 0.60) then we could use this table to find out which of the items would have to be removed from our measure to increase the interitem consistency. Note that, usually, taking out an item, although improving the reliability of our measure, affects the validity of our measure .

Formal Essay #3: Reporting Information/The Expository Essay
Expository writing is a staple of academic writing. Throughout your academic and professional career, you will be called on to write hundreds of expository articles, reports and essays. A thorough knowledge of this writing form will hold you in good stead all through your career.
What is Expository Writing?
‘Expository’ is a synonym of ‘explanatory’. An expository essay is a piece of writing that explains or informs. It should be based on fact and free of the writer’s prejudices. Opinion is often expressed, but only if it is backed by fact. For example, if someone asked you to write an essay on the causes of World War II, you would write about Germany’s losses in World War I, the Treaty of Versailles, the fall of the Weimar Republic, and the rise of Hitler led Nazism. In other words, everything would be based on verifiable fact.
The expository writing process centers on four activities:
Generate a rough idea or hypothesis.
Find evidence to back up this idea.
Expound on the idea.
Present an argument to back up the idea.
Thus, if you were to say that the Treaty of Versailles was the chief cause of World War II, you would first talk about the conditions of the Treaty of Versailles, the financial condition of Germany after WWI, the ineffectiveness of the Weimar Republic, and how they all led to the rise of Nazism.
Structurally, a piece of expository writing has the following components:
An
introduction
that introduces the central idea you will discuss in the essay.
The
main body
that presents evidence to back up the idea. This is the meat of the essay.
A
conclusion
that presents your idea again in the light of the evidence.
Thus, the central thrust of expository writing should be to build towards proving an argument, fact by fact, piece of evidence by piece of evidence. You will use expository writing a lot throughout your academic life. Most essays that you write in college will be expository in nature. Most writing that you will do in your professional life will involve a lot of expository content as well. In other words, sharpening up this skill will serve you well throughout your life.

1. What’s my next move? Our success in life—and sometimes our
survival—depends on developing the ability to solve
challenging problems in organized and creative ways. How can
we learn to be effective problem solvers?
3-1Thinking Critically About Problems
Throughout your life, you are continually solving problems,
including the many minor problems that you solve each day:
negotiating a delay caused by road construction, working
through an unexpected difficulty at your job, helping an upset
child deal with a disappointment. As a student, you are faced
with a steady stream of academic assignments, quizzes, exams,
and papers. Relatively simple problems like these do not require
a systematic or complex analysis. For example, to do well on an
exam, you need to define the problem (what areas will the exam
cover, and what will be the format?), identify and evaluate
various alternatives (what are possible study approaches?), and
then put all these factors together to reach a solution (what will
be your study plan and schedule?). But the difficult and
complicated problems in life require more attention.
Problems are the crucibles that forge the strength of our
characters. When you are tested by life—forced to overcome
adversity and think your way through the most challenging
situations—you will emerge a more intelligent, resourceful, and
resilient person. However, if you lead a sheltered existence that
insulates you from life’s trials, or if you flee from situations at
the first sign of trouble, then you are likely to be weak and
unable to cope with the eruptions and explosions that are bound
to occur. Adversity reveals the person you have become, the
character you have created. As the Roman philosopher and poet
Lucretius explained, “So it is more useful to watch a man in
times of peril, and in adversity to discern what kind of man he
is; for then, at last, words of truth are drawn from the depths of
2. his heart, and the mask is torn off, reality remains.”
The quality of your life can be traced in large measure to your
competency as a problem solver. The fact that some people are
consistently superior problem solvers is largely due to their
ability to approach problems in an informed and organized way.
Less competent problem solvers just muddle through when it
comes to confronting adversity, using hit-or-miss strategies that
rarely provide the best results. How would you rate yourself as
a problem solver? Do you generally approach difficulties
confidently, analyze them clearly, and reach productive
solutions? Or do you find that you often get “lost” and confused
in such situations, unable to understand the problem clearly and
to break out of mental ruts? Of course, you may find that you
are very adept at solving problems in one area of your life—
such as your job—and miserable at solving problems in other
areas, such as your love life or your relationships with your
children.
Becoming an expert problem solver is, for the most part, a
learned skill that you can develop by practicing and applying
the principles described in this chapter. You can learn to view
problems as challenges, opportunities for growth instead of
obstacles or burdens. You can become a person who attacks
adversity with confidence and enthusiasm.
3-2Introduction to Solving Problems
Consider the following problem:
· My best friend is addicted to drugs, but he won’t admit it.
Jack always liked to drink, but I never thought too much about
it. After all, a lot of people like to drink socially, relax, and
have a good time. But over the past few years he’s started usi ng
other drugs as well as alcohol, and it’s ruining his life. He’s
stopped taking classes at the college and will soon lose his job
if he doesn’t change. Last week I told him that I was really
worried about him, but he told me that he has no drug problem
and that in any case it really isn’t any of my business. I just
don’t know what to do. I’ve known Jack since we were in
grammar school together and he’s a wonderful person. It’s as if
3. he’s in the grip of some terrible force and I’m powerless to help
him.
In working through this problem, the student who wrote this
will have to think carefully and systematically in order to reach
a solution. To think effectively in situations like this, we
usually ask ourselves a series of questions:
1. What is the problem?
2. What are the alternatives?
3. What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of each
alternative?
4. What is the solution?
5. How well is the solution working?
Let’s explore these questions further—and the thinking process
that they represent—by applying them to the problem described
here.What Is the Problem?
The problem facing this student can be defined in a variety of
ways. Describe as specifically as possible what you think the
problem is.What Are the Alternatives?
In dealing with this problem, you have a wide variety of
possible actions to consider before selecting the best choices.
Identify some of the alternatives you might consider. One
possibility is listed already.
1. Speak to my friend in a candid and forceful way to convince
him that he has a serious problem.
2. and so on.What Are the Advantages and/or Disadvantages of
Each Alternative?
Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each of the
possibilities you identified so you can weigh your choices and
decide on the best course of action.
1. Speak to my friend in a candid and forceful way to convince
him that he has a serious problem.
Advantage: He may respond to my direct emotional appeal,
acknowledge that he has a problem, and seek help.
Disadvantage: He may react angrily, further alienating me from
him and making it more difficult for me to have any influence
on him.
4. 2. Advantage:
Disadvantage:
and so on.What Is the
Solution
?
After evaluating the various alternatives, select what you think
is the most effective alternative for solving the problem and
describe the sequence of steps you would take to act on it.How
Well Is the
