The Main Post needs to be 3-5 Paragraphs
At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original
and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to
the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts
from students. The first contribution must be posted before
midnight (Central Time) on Wednesday of each week. Two
additional responses are required after Wednesday of each
week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the
Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the
university tracks class attendance and participation.
The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to
learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to
course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible
to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended,
no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.
Many organizations have established policies to remedy
discrimination when hiring women and minorities. Discuss
whether you feel that affirmative action programs, reverse
discrimination, and criteria of comparable worth are appropriate
forms of remedy.
You should conduct research on this topic before making your
posts.
Using the textbook, course materials, and Web resources,
research affirmative action, reverse discrimination, and
comparable worth and answer the following questions:
Do you feel that these concepts are appropriate forms of remedy

Attempt at Eliminating Discrimination
After the civil war, the African American, Hispanics and
minorities suffered great discrimination in the workplace in
particular and life generally. Precisely during the 1960s these
groups went through denial of employment or appropriate wages
irrespective of their standard of education being higher than that
of their majority counterparts. There was a great debate about
discrimination on the basis of color, race, gender or religion.
Over the years, some programs have been developed in order to
handle or to try and eliminate this vice, and bring equality to
especially the workplace. Some of such programs are examined
below.
Affirmative Action
Affirmative action is a platform executed to develop guidelines
to be applied during recruitment and selection for a job without
being unfair but maintaining equal employees. In other words,
both men and women are treated equally without bias for race,
gender, color or religion. I think that this concept or program is
appropriate form of remedy in the workplace. I believe that the
application of affirmative action will ensure that certain groups
of people are not discriminated against in a society where there
are vast majority of the minority. By this concept, a job that a
minority is fully qualified for would be offered to that
individual but if that was not the case, it would be offered to the
majority because of discrimination. The application of
affirmative action has made it possible for employers to
“…analyze the results of their existing hiring processes to
determine if adjustments need to be made to prevent potential
discrimination or adverse impact against women and
minorities.” (Banach, 2014).
Reverse Discrimination
Reverse discrimination occurs when a majority is denied
employment or admission opportunities in order to accept a
minority or those described historically as disadvantaged
individuals. An example would be a man bringing up a suit
against an employer for accepting to employ a woman because
of her gender. Reverse discrimination spanned from the claim
by members of the majority that they have suffered denial of
opportunities for the sake of the minority in employment
situations. In other words, “…reverse discrimination is a claim
that occurs when a member or members of a majority are
discriminated against on the basis of a protected factor, such as
race or gender.” (Thomson Reuters, 2014). I do not think that
this concept is healthy for the workforce. I believe that if a
person is qualified for a job, irrespective of status they should
get the position. Adopting this concept, to me, could create
“bad blood” in a work environment if eventually it is discovered
that the person who was denied on the basis of their status as a
majority actually should have been employed. It could also
brew discord between the majority and the minority.
Additionally, it could result to the negating of the essence of
the original concept of these programs, which is to create
equality and harmonization of opportunities
.
Comparable Worth
Comparable worth is a concept which looks at the wage
comparison for jobs which are termed traditionally as “men”
jobs versus jobs termed “women’s” jobs. Due to the fact that
there are some jobs seemingly only for men such as carpentry,
masonry, and the likes such jobs tend to pay higher than jobs
held by women. There is a great gap between wages paid to men
and women. Comparable worth seeks to bridge the gap in
wages and promote the economic status of women to rise up to
that of their male counterparts. Personally speaking, this
concept is appropriate form of remedy in the workplace. If a
woman is capable of carrying out her duties as well as her male
counterpart, there is no reason why her wages should be reduced
in comparison to her male counterpart. If a woman is qualified
to take up the position of a Chief Executive of an organization,
the same salary that her male counterpart earns should be given
to her. This is because she has the capacity to do the job; she is
not on that position because of her gender. Looking at a case
cited by Andre and Valesquez, “In 1983, a federal court found
the State of Washington guilty of discrimination and required
the state to implement a comparable worth program. But the
case was reversed on appeal, and settled out of court when the
state agreed "voluntarily" to bring the wages of "women's
occupations" into line with "men's occupations."” (2014).
What can be done to eliminate discrimination in the workplace?
Having reviewed the three concepts that have attempted to
address the issue of discrimination in the workplace, I believe
that if properly handled affirmative action and comparable
worth can go a long way in eliminating discrimination in the
workplace. Additionally, people should be viewed first as
human beings and equal from the onset of receiving applications
for employment or admission into schools. There should not be
a biased mind set; there should be an open mind of acceptance
and dedication towards doing the right thing by those in charge
or in authority.

Affirmative Action dates back to the 1960’s during civil
rights. It was meant to give an equal opportunity to everyone.
Regardless to race everyone deserved an equal break, but not
guaranteed equal results. Those who faced discrimination, such
as African Americans, women or the disabled, needed a fair
representation in the work force and educational institutions.

Reverse discrimination is no more than a victim of a
majority group who have been discriminated. Some cases
involving reverse discrimination often happen when it’s time to
advance or promote minorities and address inequalities. A
person or persons can be discriminated against because of
gender or race. An example of reverse discrimination occurs
when a women is hired because of her gender while overlooking
a more qualified male. (Reuters, 2013)
Comparable worth deals with the gender related wage
scale in the workplace. This aspect focuses on women’s wages
in relationship to men’s. It’s illegal to discriminate wages from
one gender to the other. Certain questions arise when addressing
comparable worth such as “equal pay for equal work”, or “equal
pay for similar work. The legal aspect of comparable worth can
be complicated because the laws aren’t clear. In the workplace
terms have to be different from one another or there considered
equal. The equal pay act of 1963 is a requirement for workers
who have equal jobs. (Knes, 2014)
These forms of remedies in the work place are
appropriate. They sat a standard of how things should be done
in order to minimize discrimination. It would be a lot easier if
individuals weren’t discriminated against, so these requirement
or laws wouldn’t have to be put in place. I do believe it’s not
right for individuals to feel looked different upon. In order to
eliminate discrimination employers and employee have to treat
one another fairly. If people in the workplace didn’t look upon
others as being different, because of gender or race, I believe
discrimination would decrease tremendously.

The Main Post needs to be 3-5 Paragraphs At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Wednesday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Wednesday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation. The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit. Many organizations have established policies to remedy discrimination when hiring women and minorities. Discuss whether you feel that affirmative action programs, reverse discrimination, and criteria of comparable worth are appropriate forms of remedy. You should conduct research on this topic before making your posts. Using the textbook, course materials, and Web resources, research affirmative action, reverse discrimination, and comparable worth and answer the following questions: Do you feel that these concepts are appropriate forms of remedy in the workplace? Explain. What else do you think could be done to eliminate discrimination in the workplace? You must use at least one credible source from either the Library's full-text database or the Web. Response to Classmates posts: Classmate #1 post: Attempt at Eliminating Discrimination After the civil war, the African American, Hispanics and minorities suffered great discrimination in the workplace in particular and life generally. Precisely during the 1960s these groups went through denial of employment or appropriate wages irrespective of their standard of education being higher than that of their majority counterparts. There was a great debate about discrimination on the basis of color, race, gender or religion. Over the years, some programs have been developed in order to handle or to try and eliminate this vice, and bring equality to especially the workplace. Some of such programs are examined below.

Affirmative Action Affirmative action is a platform executed to develop guidelines to be applied during recruitment and selection for a job without being unfair but maintaining equal employees. In other words, both men and women are treated equally without bias for race, gender, color or religion. I think that this concept or program is appropriate form of remedy in the workplace. I believe that the application of affirmative action will ensure that certain groups of people are not discriminated against in a society where there are vast majority of the minority. By this concept, a job that a minority is fully qualified for would be offered to that individual but if that was not the case, it would be offered to the majority because of discrimination. The application of affirmative action has made it possible for employers to “…analyze the results of their existing hiring processes to determine if adjustments need to be made to prevent potential discrimination or adverse impact against women and minorities.” (Banach, 2014). Reverse Discrimination Reverse discrimination occurs when a majority is denied employment or admission opportunities in order to accept a minority or those described historically as disadvantaged individuals. An example would be a man bringing up a suit against an employer for accepting to employ a woman because of her gender. Reverse discrimination spanned from the claim by members of the majority that they have suffered denial of opportunities for the sake of the minority in employment situations. In other words, “…reverse discrimination is a claim that occurs when a member or members of a majority are discriminated against on the basis of a protected factor, such as race or gender.” (Thomson Reuters, 2014). I do not think that this concept is healthy for the workforce. I believe that if a
  • 4. person is qualified for a job, irrespective of status they should get the position. Adopting this concept, to me, could create “bad blood” in a work environment if eventually it is discovered that the person who was denied on the basis of their status as a majority actually should have been employed. It could also brew discord between the majority and the minority. Additionally, it could result to the negating of the essence of the original concept of these programs, which is to create equality and harmonization of opportunities . Comparable Worth Comparable worth is a concept which looks at the wage comparison for jobs which are termed traditionally as “men” jobs versus jobs termed “women’s” jobs. Due to the fact that there are some jobs seemingly only for men such as carpentry, masonry, and the likes such jobs tend to pay higher than jobs held by women. There is a great gap between wages paid to men and women. Comparable worth seeks to bridge the gap in wages and promote the economic status of women to rise up to that of their male counterparts. Personally speaking, this concept is appropriate form of remedy in the workplace. If a woman is capable of carrying out her duties as well as her male counterpart, there is no reason why her wages should be reduced in comparison to her male counterpart. If a woman is qualified to take up the position of a Chief Executive of an organization, the same salary that her male counterpart earns should be given to her. This is because she has the capacity to do the job; she is not on that position because of her gender. Looking at a case cited by Andre and Valesquez, “In 1983, a federal court found the State of Washington guilty of discrimination and required the state to implement a comparable worth program. But the case was reversed on appeal, and settled out of court when the state agreed "voluntarily" to bring the wages of "women's occupations" into line with "men's occupations."” (2014).
  • 5. What can be done to eliminate discrimination in the workplace? Having reviewed the three concepts that have attempted to address the issue of discrimination in the workplace, I believe that if properly handled affirmative action and comparable worth can go a long way in eliminating discrimination in the workplace. Additionally, people should be viewed first as human beings and equal from the onset of receiving applications for employment or admission into schools. There should not be a biased mind set; there should be an open mind of acceptance and dedication towards doing the right thing by those in charge or in authority. References Banach, A., (2014).   • 6. Affirmative Action dates back to the 1960’s during civil rights. It was meant to give an equal opportunity to everyone. Regardless to race everyone deserved an equal break, but not guaranteed equal results. Those who faced discrimination, such as African Americans, women or the disabled, needed a fair representation in the work force and educational institutions. (Conference, 2014) Reverse discrimination is no more than a victim of a majority group who have been discriminated. Some cases involving reverse discrimination often happen when it’s time to advance or promote minorities and address inequalities. A person or persons can be discriminated against because of gender or race. An example of reverse discrimination occurs when a women is hired because of her gender while overlooking a more qualified male. (Reuters, 2013) Comparable worth deals with the gender related wage scale in the workplace. This aspect focuses on women’s wages in relationship to men’s. It’s illegal to discriminate wages from one gender to the other. Certain questions arise when addressing comparable worth such as “equal pay for equal work”, or “equal pay for similar work. The legal aspect of comparable worth can be complicated because the laws aren’t clear. In the workplace terms have to be different from one another or there considered equal. The equal pay act of 1963 is a requirement for workers who have equal jobs. (Knes, 2014) These forms of remedies in the work place are appropriate. They sat a standard of how things should be done in order to minimize discrimination. It would be a lot easier if individuals weren’t discriminated against, so these requirement or laws wouldn’t have to be put in place. I do believe it’s not right for individuals to feel looked different upon. In order to eliminate discrimination employers and employee have to treat one another fairly. If people in the workplace didn’t look upon others as being different, because of gender or race, I believe
