Medicinal Plants
Medicinal plants can be defined as the plants that
possess therapeutic properties or exert beneficial
pharmacological effect on the human or animal
body.
Helping to cure an illness Or
Helping you to relax and feel better
• The earliest historical records of herbs are found
from the Sumerian civilization , where hundreds
of medicinal plants including opium are listed on
clay tablets, c. 3000 BC.
• The Ebers Papyrus from ancient
Egypt, c. 1550
BC, describes over 850 plant medicines.
Medicinal Plants
With the increasing demand for
drugs, natural health products,
herbal
and
secondary metabolites of medicinal plants,
the use of medicinal plants is growing rapidly
throughout the world.
Medicinal Plants

World Health
Organization
According to World Health
Organization, the demand for
medicinal plants is $14 billion per
year and is likely to increase to
more than US $5 trillion by 2050.
80% of people in developing countries are
totally dependent on herbal drugs for their
primary healthcare, and over 25% of
prescribed medicines in developed countries are
derived from wild plant species.
Medicinal Plants
IUCN
According to the International Union for
Conservation of Nature and the World Wildlife
Fund, about 50,000- 80,000 of flowering plants
are used because of their medicinal values.

Medicinal Plants
NATIO AL MEDICI AL PLA TS BOARD
• The National Medicinal Plant Board, has
estimated that India has 17,000-18,000 species
of flowering plants, out of which 6000-7000
are known to have medicinal application in
ancient medicinal systems such as Ayurveda,
Unani, Siddha, and homeopathy
•About 960 medicinal plants are in trade
industry of which only 178 are known to have
annual consumption levels of more than 100
MT (metric tons)
Medicinal Plants
Globally, several products such as crude drugs, flavors,
aromas and fragrances, preservatives, food additives,
cosmetics, natural pigments, and bioactive compounds are
extracted from plants.
Potents and active substances such as; capsaicin (rheumatic
pains), colchicines (gout), morphine (pain killer)
codeine (antitussive), papaverine (phosphodiesterase inhibitor),
scopolamine (travel sickness)
ajmaline (antirrhythmic), berberine (psoriasis), caffeine
stimulant), yohimbine (aphrodisiac), pilocarpine (glauco ma),
ephedrine (stimulant), quinine (antimalarial), reserpine
(antihypertensive ), and galanthamine are obtained from plants.

Clasical Ayurvedic Nomenclature
Nomenclature and Identification (Nama Jnana and Rupa
Jnana)
•The nomenclature of Ayurveda is not a binomial
system as adopted by modern botany.
•The concept of "Nama" (nomenclature)-"rupa"
(morphology/ character) - "jnana" (the knowledge)
mentioned in "Charaka Samhita" as well as
"Susruta Samhita" much earlier than the
,,Latin scientific name'' is coined to a plant.
•In Ayurveda, there are many names for a single
entity and a single name is used to denote many
plants. So it is essential to understand the way
Ayurvedic nomenclature works.
Ayush Unani
The Unani System of Medicine (Yunlinf N zlim-i Tihb
or Tihb), originated in ancient Greece (Yunan).
Based on
(Hippocrates)
the principles

adopted by

the Arabs into a specialized
Theophrastus (about 300 BC), in his book
,,History of Plants''
dealt with the medicinal qualities of herbs, and noted
the ability to change their characteristics through
cultivation.
Dioscorides (100 AD) mentioned
storage, and use of medicinal herbs
the collection,
Galen (130-200 AD) wrote 30 books on these subjects,
and is well known for his complex prescriptions and
formulas
Ibn al-Baitar (1197-1248 AD) published;
''Kitab al-Jami c li-Mufradat al-Adwiya wa-1-Aghdhiya ''
''The Book on Drinks and Foods''
It is the most Prestigious Book in the Arabic
Pharmacopeia.

How Aromatherapy works (Concept of Cardiac Drugs)
Dr.Alan Huch,a neurologist, psychiatrist and also the director of smell
and
taste research center in Chicago says .smell acts directly on
brain like a drug ,our nose has capacity to distinguish llakh different
smells.
Aroma oils work like magic for stress related problems,
skin infections, hair loss, inflammation, pain arising from muscular
or skeletal disorder.
They are absorbed through olfactory membrane, lungs and even skin
into the blood stream and brain,
