Introduction Use of aromatic or essential oils Hieglyphics (4500 BC) mentioned use of aromatic sub. as drugs and medicine  Term ‘aromatherapy’ was coined by French cosmetic chemist Prof. Gantle Fosse.
Introduction He was aware of potential of aromatic material for treatment of physical & mental ailments. India- traditional use of aromatherapy ubtane, essence sticks, and dhoops for changing mood 3
Introduction Essential oils were used due to their antimicrobial property to avoid putrefaction of dead bodies in process of preservation Greeks used of aromatic principles for massage, aromatic bath & for wound healing
Theory & Basic Concepts Osphresiology- study of physiology  & other aspects of olfaction.  It is interdiciplinary science involving mol. physics & app. psychology
Theory & Basic Concepts Chemical molecules from source come in contact with anatomical structures where interaction occurs and signals are transferred to brain 6
Theory & Basic Concepts Researchers from Weizmann Institutes of sci., Israel have found out principle of smell Aromatic chem.			G-protein stimulation Production of	Adenylate 	 cAMP				cyclase   	      			activation	  Increased ionic permeability	     Impulse 							  transmission
Theory & Basic Concepts The electric impulse is transmitted through nerve fibers to brain  Aromatic substances have potential curative abilities in treatment of wounds, acne, other skin problems, arthritic diseases and stress conditions 8
Diagnosis Aromatherapist carefully narrate the problem of patient  Aromatherapist investigates about diet, lifestyle, present symptoms, past illness and previous treatment After diagnosis he prescribes specific essential oils as a remedy. The aromatic oil formulation is decided based upon the diagnosis. 9
Treatment Formulated oils are massaged into skin, inhaled or added to the hot bath.  OilMassage- selected for skin problems, muscular pain, urinogenital disorder, etc. Inhalation- selected in respiratory diseases and in some nervine diseases. Massagetechnique- specific pressure points and works down to lymph nodes Oils selected carefully for quicker effect 10
Treatment For single application 2-3drops of essential oil in a teaspoonful carrier oil used  Whole body massage require 8 drops of essential oil in 3 teaspoonful carrier oil Wheat germ oil(10%)used as preservative Oils for massage- chamomile, geranium, lavender, mandin, peppermint oil, etc. Oils as carrier- Olive oil, almond oil, corn oil, etc. 11
Treatment Full bath: 5-10 drops of essential oil added to warm bath & body immersed for 10 to 20 min. Half hand/foot bath: 4-8 essential oil drops blown in warm water & hands/feet soaked for 5 to 10 min. Compress Treatment: 4-8 drops of essential oil added in enough hot/cold water so as to soak compress & applied to affected area 12
Treatment Hot water is recommended in cases like backache, toothache and rheumatic pain Cold water is preferred in bruise, sprain and headache Inhalation: 4-8 drops sprinkled on tissue paper or in hot water and inhaled for 5 to 10 min keeping eyes closed. It is contraindicated in asthmatic patient Internaluse: as a aromatic tea or other liquids preparation 13
