How water distributed on the earth?
Global Freshwater Use
Daily direct water use
What is Water footprint?
Everything we use, wear, buy, sell and eat takes water
to make.
Water Footprint
Created in 2002 by Arjen Hoekstra
Water Footprint refers to the volume of water used to produce various
products and services.
Water footprints can be applied to a product, a service, an individual, a
country or even the world
Why Water Foot Print is important?
BUSINESS GOVERMENT CONSUMER
To understand their
water-related business
risk
To understand the role
of water in their
economy and water
dependency
To know how much
water is hidden in the
products they use.
How water footprint are measured ?
Water consumed Evaporated Polluted

Water Footprint
• Malaysian national
average water footprint as
2103 m³/yr per capita
compared to the global
average of 1385 m³/yr per
capita.
• 32.3% of the footprint is
acquainted to operations
outside Malaysia (import
dependency)

Highest water footprint per capita
United States
2483 m3 per year
Greece
2389 m3 per year
19 % import dependency
51 % import dependency
Italy
2322 m3 per year
35 % imp ort dependency
Thailand
2223 m3 per year
8 % import dependency
Facts
Global average water footprint is around
1,240 m3 year per person
2.8 billions people in 48 countries will face water
stress/scarcity conditions by 2025
Middle of century it will reach 7 billion
What is your water footprint?
Your tap water use and the
virtual water used to
produce your food,
electricity , gas and home
goods
Virtual water
● Indirect or “virtual” water
use, also called “embedded
water,” is the water “hidden”
in the products, services and
processes you buy and use
every day, like crop irrigation,
power production and
consumer goods
manufacturing.
Food and water are connected.
Have you ever looked at a plate of food
and wondered, “How much water it takes
to make a burger?”

Can I do something to reduce my
own water footprint and help us
manage water for both people and
nature?
How your diet affects
your water footprint?
Food & Water
● Eat less meat
● Eat better meat – choose
pasture-raised if possible vs
conventional meat
● Eat more unprocessed foods
● Waste less food
● Choose organic
● Eat local
Install a low flow
showerhead
- Conventional

- Low flow
showerheads < 9.5

SHOWER & BATH
10 minutes shower with
low-flow showerhead only
used 95 l compared to
average bath uses of 190 l

Turn off the water
Spend less time in the
shower
- Bring radio to
bathroom & time
yourself by how many
songs plays while
you’re there
If shave or brush your
teeth in the shower
LAUNDRY
Save energy save water
because power plants
use a lot of water to
produce electricity
Dry your clothes on a drying rack
Despite being red,
Mars is a cold place
Choose an energy star
water and energy
efficient model
When its full
Use your washing machine
It will wear them out more
quickly
Wash your jeans less
GARDENS
WATER WHEN ITS
COOLER
To reduce water loss from
evaporation
Don’t let the
hose run
Use pistol grip
It will be lost to
evaporation
DON’T WATER ON
WINDY DAYS
How can you contribute?
Your water footprint is much larger
than you think, so please beware of
your water footprint!
Thank you & Stay Safe
