Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

9. Burden’s Wheel
In 1851, in a field beside an
ironworks in upstate New York,
Henry Burden built the largest
and most powerful industrial
water wheel in the world. At
top speed, this 600 foot, 250
ton behemoth could produce
500 horsepower that
generated enough electricity to
power the tools in his factory.
10. Burden’s Wheel
By the early years of the
twentieth century (50 years
later) this once-world- class,
cutting edge technology was
abandoned, rusting in a field
of overgrown grass. Ouch!
11. The Same Technological Revolution Is Happening
Today With Mobile And Cloud Computing:
Like Burden’s Wheel, the days of the on-premise
server are numbered:
• We now live in a world driven by “apps.”
• The trend toward cloud and mobile computing is
driving one of the largest, fastest shifts in consumer
behavior in the last 40 years, with the rate of
adoption outpacing the PC revolution of the 80’s and
Internet boom of the 90’s.
• Of the 250 million people in the US over the age of 14,
it’s estimated that 235 million of them have a mobile
device.
• Most software companies are moving towards a
cloud-based, SaaS model (software-as-a-service),
which has a six-times faster growth rate than
traditional software licensing.
12. In Fact, You’re Already Using
Cloud Computing And Mobile Devices:
• Google search engine (Google Maps, AdWords, etc.)
• Constant Contact, AWeber, and MailChimp
• Gmail, Hotmail and free e-mail services
• Online banking
• Zoomerang, Survey Monkey
• Every ATM and credit card machine you use
• Question: You’re already using cloud computing and
mobile devices, but are you being SMART and STRATEGIC
about it?
13. But How Does It Work?
A Quick Non-Techie Overview:
What Is Cloud Computing?
A “collective virtual
computer” that uses
economies of scale to
provide you IT resources,
tools and applications “on
demand” like a utility via
the web.
15. Why So Many Businesses Are Choosing
Mobile & Cloud Computing Vs. The Traditional
Server-Workstation Network:
Benefits Of Moving To The Cloud:
• Lowers hardware costs
• Device agnostic, giving you incredible
flexibility and freedom
• Lowers IT support costs
• Frees you to access applications from any
device
• Access your desktop anywhere, anytime
• Built-in disaster recovery and business
continuity
• Only pay for what you need and use (utility
pricing)
16. Why So Many Businesses Are Choosing
Mobile & Cloud Computing Vs. The Traditional
Server-Workstation Network:
Benefits Of Mobile Computing:
• Makes it incredibly easy to work and be
productive when traveling, working from
home, in the field, or other “out of office”
location.
• Mobile devices tend to be cheaper than
traditional workstations and are preferred by
many workers.
• Some companies are opting for a BYOD (bring
your own device) policy to eliminate the cost
of supplying each worker with a PC, and the
related support costs.

Dangers On The Rise…
34. Bottom Line:
You Need A Mobile Device
Policy For Your Business!
But What Does That Look Like?
35. A Written Policy:
Who owns the device?
Do you want to allow employees to bring their own devices to work (BYOD)?
What web sites and applications can your employees access on the device? Are
they permitted to download games, apps, etc.?
Can employees use the device for personal use? If so, how and when?
If the device is lost or stolen, who pays for the replacement?
What data and information may the employee have on the device?
Can employees legally work after hours?
Strict rules around employees using the device while driving or operating
machinery, or after hours.
Strict rules specifying that employees may not “jailbreak” or “root” the device, or
update it with 3rd party versions of the operating system.
Strict rules detailing what employees must do if the device is lost, stolen or
otherwise compromised (report it immediately!).
What are the penalties for NOT following the policy?

You Also Need “Locks” On The Door:
Security protections enforced, such as strong passwords and pin codes to

premise server the best way to go? Is there a hybrid option that would better serve
you?
• Is your network REALLY secure? How protected are you from a hacker attack, rogue
employee, virus or dozens of other threats? Are your employees educated on security
best practices? Do you have ways of enforcing certain security policies?
• Are all of your most important files, data and systems being backed up? How fast
could you recover your systems if necessary? What about 3rd party cloud vendors
hosting e-mail, web sites, client data, etc.?
• Are you making the best, most cost-effective decisions regarding IT hardware,
software and systems, or are you throwing money away?
• What is your tolerance for RISK? Are you willing to introduce a BYOD option, or would
you prefer not to allow employees to work remotely, from home or using their own
devices?
This Is Only The Beginning…
38. • Step 1: Where Are You?
What’s lacking? What limitations are making it difficult to work? What
applications, systems and information are NOT easily shared? How are
employees working now? What works, what doesn’t? Where are you
exposed to risk?
• Step 2: What Do You Want To Be Able To Do?
Clarify your specific business objectives on what you want to accomplish
and the specific risk tolerance you have: what you want to enable
employees to do, how you want to work, where productivity roadblocks
are, etc.
• Step 3: How Are We Going To Get There?
What’s the most effective and efficient way to achieve your business
goals and maximize productivity? How do we minimize or eliminate risks?
