The Evolution Of IT: A Brief History
So What IS Cloud Computing?
The Internet and cloud computing is to
computing what the electrical grid and
electric company is to plugging in your
coffee maker:
A more convenient and less expensive way to access the
information, “computing power” and applications you
need.
Cloud Versus On-Premise Networks
Consideration Cloud On-Premise
IT Infrastructure
Fewer Or No Internal Resources,
Specialization Or Infrastructure
Established IT Support Required With A Solid
Security and Backup Solution In Place
Access Via A Web Browser Or Other Mobile Device
Client Server Workstations For Onsite Or Citrix

Companies Who Want To Lower Or Eliminate
Infrastructure Capital Expenditures (Startups) And
Need An Affordable “Pay As Needed” Model For
Computing Resources (Operating Expense)
Established Organizations Who Have The
Ability To Make IT Investments (CapEx) In The
Form Of Software And Infrastructure

Those With A High Turnover Or Seasonal Workforce
Who Want A “Pay As You Go” Model
Those With An Relatively Stable Workforce
With Little Turnover, Expansion Or Contraction

Those Who Want To Have A Remote Workforce To
Avoid The Overhead Of A Large Office, Or Who Have
Workers In The Field
Those With An Established Office Location
With Workers Who Are Not In Remote Offices

Burden’s Wheel
In 1851, in a field beside an
ironworks in upstate New York,
Henry Burden built the largest
and most powerful industrial
water wheel in the world. At
top speed, this 600 foot, 250
ton behemoth could produce
500 horsepower that
generated enough electricity to
power the tools in his factory.
Burden’s Wheel
By the early years of the
twentieth century (50 years
later) this once-world- class,
cutting edge technology was
abandoned, rusting in a field
of overgrown grass. Ouch!
The Same Technological Revolution Is Happening
Today With Mobile And Cloud Computing:
Like Burden’s Wheel, the days of the on-premise
server are numbered:
• We now live in a world driven by “apps.”
• The trend toward cloud and mobile computing is
driving one of the largest, fastest shifts in consumer
behavior in the last 40 years, with the rate of
adoption outpacing the PC revolution of the 80’s and
Internet boom of the 90’s.
• Of the 250 million people in the US over the age of 14,
it’s estimated that 235 million of them have a mobile
device.
• Most software companies are moving towards a
cloud-based, SaaS model (software-as-a-service),
which has a six-times faster growth rate than
traditional software licensing.
In Fact, You’re Already Using
Cloud Computing And Mobile Devices:
• Google search engine (Google Maps, AdWords, etc.)
• Constant Contact, AWeber, and MailChimp
• Gmail, Hotmail and free e-mail services
• Online banking
• Zoomerang, Survey Monkey
• Every ATM and credit card machine you use
• Question: You’re already using cloud computing and
mobile devices, but are you being SMART and STRATEGIC
about it?
But How Does It Work?
A Quick Non-Techie Overview:
What Is Cloud Computing?
A “collective virtual
computer” that uses
economies of scale to
provide you IT resources,
tools and applications “on
demand” like a utility via
the web.
Cloud Computing And Mobile Devices
Work Hand In Hand
Why So Many Businesses Are Choosing
Mobile & Cloud Computing Vs. The Traditional
Server-Workstation Network:
Benefits Of Moving To The Cloud:
• Lowers hardware costs
• Device agnostic, giving you incredible
flexibility and freedom
• Lowers IT support costs
• Frees you to access applications from any
device
• Access your desktop anywhere, anytime
• Built-in disaster recovery and business
continuity
• Only pay for what you need and use (utility
pricing)
Why So Many Businesses Are Choosing
Mobile & Cloud Computing Vs. The Traditional
Server-Workstation Network:
Benefits Of Mobile Computing:
• Makes it incredibly easy to work and be
productive when traveling, working from
home, in the field, or other “out of office”
location.
• Mobile devices tend to be cheaper than
traditional workstations and are preferred by
many workers.
• Some companies are opting for a BYOD (bring
your own device) policy to eliminate the cost
of supplying each worker with a PC, and the
related support costs.
Client Case Studies
How Our Clients Are Being
Smart And Strategic With Cloud
And Mobile Computing
Tony, Joe and Mark are the partners of a very successful
environmental consulting company servicing major
developers in Southern California, with 20 employees and 2
locations.
Current Situation:
• Were a startup and had no infrastructure.
• Needed a way to allow employees to work from
their homes during at any time.
• Had to have a way of sharing key files to
everyone no matter where they were.
• Had to have control and security over
documents at all times
Case Study:
Meridian Consultants LLC
Solution:
• Installed an entirely NEW infrastructure hybridized with the
cloud without requiring a large purchase of new hardware
(1 small server).
• Added a small inexpensive server to act as a local backup,
centralize specialized software, and “Plan B” in the event of
an Internet outage or slowness.
• All employees have a laptop and a smart phone
• Made available remote access to the server so that key
employees work at remote sites when needed
• Controlled cost by incrementally grew network as needed
• Allowed them to add and remove users
• Gave them an instant disaster recovery plan.
Case Study:
Meridian Consultants LLC
Their Comments:
“We decided that we wanted to minimize costly
infrastructure investment and allow our team to
collaborate real time from anywhere. But this was
all new to us and we were not sure about vendors.
Looking back, we made the right decision.
Denis brought the right vendors to the table. We
only had one issue with a vendor, and yet we built
a $5 million company with over 20 employees in 3
years.”
Case Study:
Meridian Consultants LLC
Steve Elchyshyn is the CEO of a very successful
manufacturing company servicing aerospace manufacturers
all around the US, with 10 employees and 1 location.
Current Situation:
• Had an old, outdated network that desperately needed
to be upgraded.
• Needed a way to allow employees to work from their
homes during peak times.
• Had a seasonal, part-time workforce he needed to
support for a few months out of the year.
• Costs for new hardware, software and the upgrade
project were in the $23,000 range.

savings of $13,698 over 3 years.
• Allowed him to add and remove users quickly without
having to purchase full-blown software licenses and
workstations.
• Added a hosted disaster recovery plan.
Case Study:
Cutting Edge Mfg.
His Comments:
“I’m very conservative and was skeptical of going
to the cloud and mobile solution when Denis first
recommended it. But the cost savings were just too
hard to ignore, and since Denis was recommended
to me by a trusted friend, I decided to go for it.
In hindsight, this turned out to be one of the best
decisions I’ve ever made. Not only does this
drastically lower our IT costs (which go right to the
bottom line) but it has made it infinitely easier for
my team to work and get things done.”
Case Study:
Cutting Edge Mfg.
Chris Johnson is the CEO of a regional non-profit company
servicing school children in Los Angeles, with 100 FT and

“I had worked with Denis before at the Red Cross
of Ventura County and knew I could trust him. He
brought us a solutions that was customized for our
needs without having to pay a lot for that
customization. As a non-profit the bottom line is
everything.”

I want to use mobile devices? How?
What about the risks? Control?
It’s Not All Sunshine And Roses…
The Dangers
Of Mobile Computing
There are a growing number of
“ambulance chaser” attorneys
going after employers with “non-
exempt” hourly wage workers; if
the employee is simply checking e-
mail after hours, and you don’t
compensate them, you are in
violation of employment laws.
Mobile Computing Dangers On The Rise…
Employers are now
liable for accidents
caused by employees
using mobile devices
while driving or
operating machinery.
Mobile Computing Dangers On The Rise…
A recent report from
McAfee shows an
astonishing rise in
malware designed to
attack mobile devices,
from 792 samples in 2011
to 36,699 in 2012, just
one year later!
Malware: A Rapidly Growing Concern
If A Device Is Lost Or Stolen,
And The Data Was NOT
Encrypted, You May Have
Violated A California Data
Breach Law
• In California, “personal
information” is considered a
person’s first name or first initial
and last name in combination with
a driver’s license number, social
security number, or any
information (including logins and
passwords) related to financial
records (credit cards, access codes,
passwords, etc.).
Mobile Computing Dangers On The Rise…
A writer once asked a literary
agent, “What kind of writing
pays the most?” Her answer
was simple:
“Ransom notes.”
That's sort of what's
happening in the cybercrime
world — sensitive data in the
wrong hands is used to extort
money.
Mobile Computing
Dangers On The Rise…
Bottom Line:
You Need A Mobile Device
Policy For Your Business!
But What Does That Look Like?
A Written Policy:
 Who owns the device?
 Do you want to allow employees to bring their own devices to work (BYOD)?
 What web sites and applications can your employees access on the device? Are
they permitted to download games, apps, etc.?
 Can employees use the device for personal use? If so, how and when?
 If the device is lost or stolen, who pays for the replacement?
 What data and information may the employee have on the device?
 Can employees legally work after hours?
 Strict rules around employees using the device while driving or operating
machinery, or after hours.
 Strict rules specifying that employees may not “jailbreak” or “root” the device, or
update it with 3rd party versions of the operating system.
 Strict rules detailing what employees must do if the device is lost, stolen or
otherwise compromised (report it immediately!).
 What are the penalties for NOT following the policy?
One Key Piece Of Your Strategic IT Plan:
Your Mobile Device Policy
A Written Policy Is Not Enough!
You Also Need “Locks” On The Door:
 Security protections enforced, such as strong passwords and pin codes to
unlock the device, encryption of data, etc.
 A remote “kill” switch if the device is lost or stolen.
 Monitoring software and content filtering to enforce company policy.
 Backup of the data on the device.
One Key Piece Of Your Strategic IT Plan:
Your Mobile Device Policy
• If you are facing a network refresh, should you consider cloud computing? Is an on-
premise server the best way to go? Is there a hybrid option that would better serve
you?
• Is your network REALLY secure? How protected are you from a hacker attack, rogue
employee, virus or dozens of other threats? Are your employees educated on security
best practices? Do you have ways of enforcing certain security policies?
• Are all of your most important files, data and systems being backed up? How fast
could you recover your systems if necessary? What about 3rd party cloud vendors
hosting e-mail, web sites, client data, etc.?
• Are you making the best, most cost-effective decisions regarding IT hardware,
software and systems, or are you throwing money away?
• What is your tolerance for RISK? Are you willing to introduce a BYOD option, or would
you prefer not to allow employees to work remotely, from home or using their own
devices?
This Is Only The Beginning…
• Step 1: Where Are You?
What’s lacking? What limitations are making it difficult to work? What
applications, systems and information are NOT easily shared? How are
employees working now? What works, what doesn’t? Where are you
exposed to risk?
• Step 2: What Do You Want To Be Able To Do?
Clarify your specific business objectives on what you want to accomplish
and the specific risk tolerance you have: what you want to enable
employees to do, how you want to work, where productivity roadblocks
are, etc.
• Step 3: How Are We Going To Get There?
What’s the most effective and efficient way to achieve your business
goals and maximize productivity? How do we minimize or eliminate risks?
3 Steps To A Strategic IT Planning

  • 9. Burden’s Wheel In 1851, in a field beside an ironworks in upstate New York, Henry Burden built the largest and most powerful industrial water wheel in the world. At top speed, this 600 foot, 250 ton behemoth could produce 500 horsepower that generated enough electricity to power the tools in his factory.
  • 10. Burden’s Wheel By the early years of the twentieth century (50 years later) this once-world- class, cutting edge technology was abandoned, rusting in a field of overgrown grass. Ouch!
  • 11. The Same Technological Revolution Is Happening Today With Mobile And Cloud Computing: Like Burden’s Wheel, the days of the on-premise server are numbered: • We now live in a world driven by “apps.” • The trend toward cloud and mobile computing is driving one of the largest, fastest shifts in consumer behavior in the last 40 years, with the rate of adoption outpacing the PC revolution of the 80’s and Internet boom of the 90’s. • Of the 250 million people in the US over the age of 14, it’s estimated that 235 million of them have a mobile device. • Most software companies are moving towards a cloud-based, SaaS model (software-as-a-service), which has a six-times faster growth rate than traditional software licensing.
  • 12. In Fact, You’re Already Using Cloud Computing And Mobile Devices: • Google search engine (Google Maps, AdWords, etc.) • Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter • Constant Contact, AWeber, and MailChimp • Gmail, Hotmail and free e-mail services • Online banking • Zoomerang, Survey Monkey • Every ATM and credit card machine you use • Question: You’re already using cloud computing and mobile devices, but are you being SMART and STRATEGIC about it?
  • 13. But How Does It Work? A Quick Non-Techie Overview: What Is Cloud Computing? A “collective virtual computer” that uses economies of scale to provide you IT resources, tools and applications “on demand” like a utility via the web.
  • 14. Cloud Computing And Mobile Devices Work Hand In Hand
  • 15. Why So Many Businesses Are Choosing Mobile & Cloud Computing Vs. The Traditional Server-Workstation Network: Benefits Of Moving To The Cloud: • Lowers hardware costs • Device agnostic, giving you incredible flexibility and freedom • Lowers IT support costs • Frees you to access applications from any device • Access your desktop anywhere, anytime • Built-in disaster recovery and business continuity • Only pay for what you need and use (utility pricing)
  • 16. Why So Many Businesses Are Choosing Mobile & Cloud Computing Vs. The Traditional Server-Workstation Network: Benefits Of Mobile Computing: • Makes it incredibly easy to work and be productive when traveling, working from home, in the field, or other “out of office” location. • Mobile devices tend to be cheaper than traditional workstations and are preferred by many workers. • Some companies are opting for a BYOD (bring your own device) policy to eliminate the cost of supplying each worker with a PC, and the related support costs.
  • 17. Client Case Studies How Our Clients Are Being Smart And Strategic With Cloud And Mobile Computing
  • 18. Tony, Joe and Mark are the partners of a very successful environmental consulting company servicing major developers in Southern California, with 20 employees and 2 locations. Current Situation: • Were a startup and had no infrastructure. • Needed a way to allow employees to work from their homes during at any time. • Had to have a way of sharing key files to everyone no matter where they were. • Had to have control and security over documents at all times Case Study: Meridian Consultants LLC
  • 19. Solution: • Installed an entirely NEW infrastructure hybridized with the cloud without requiring a large purchase of new hardware (1 small server). • Added a small inexpensive server to act as a local backup, centralize specialized software, and “Plan B” in the event of an Internet outage or slowness. • All employees have a laptop and a smart phone • Made available remote access to the server so that key employees work at remote sites when needed • Controlled cost by incrementally grew network as needed • Allowed them to add and remove users • Gave them an instant disaster recovery plan. Case Study: Meridian Consultants LLC
  • 20. Their Comments: “We decided that we wanted to minimize costly infrastructure investment and allow our team to collaborate real time from anywhere. But this was all new to us and we were not sure about vendors. Looking back, we made the right decision. Denis brought the right vendors to the table. We only had one issue with a vendor, and yet we built a $5 million company with over 20 employees in 3 years.” Case Study: Meridian Consultants LLC
  • 21. Steve Elchyshyn is the CEO of a very successful manufacturing company servicing aerospace manufacturers all around the US, with 10 employees and 1 location. Current Situation: • Had an old, outdated network that desperately needed to be upgraded. • Needed a way to allow employees to work from their homes during peak times. • Had a seasonal, part-time workforce he needed to support for a few months out of the year. • Costs for new hardware, software and the upgrade project were in the $23,000 range. Case Study: Cutting Edge Mfg.
  • 22. Solution: • Upgraded him to an entirely NEW infrastructure hybridized with the cloud without requiring a large purchase of new hardware (1 small server). • Added a small inexpensive server to act as a local backup, centralize specialized software, and “Plan B” in the event of an Internet outage or slowness. • Made available remote access to the server so that key employees work at home when needed • Saved him $4,865 on IT costs in year one, with a total savings of $13,698 over 3 years. • Allowed him to add and remove users quickly without having to purchase full-blown software licenses and workstations. • Added a hosted disaster recovery plan. Case Study: Cutting Edge Mfg.
  • 23. His Comments: “I’m very conservative and was skeptical of going to the cloud and mobile solution when Denis first recommended it. But the cost savings were just too hard to ignore, and since Denis was recommended to me by a trusted friend, I decided to go for it. In hindsight, this turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Not only does this drastically lower our IT costs (which go right to the bottom line) but it has made it infinitely easier for my team to work and get things done.” Case Study: Cutting Edge Mfg.
  • 24. Chris Johnson is the CEO of a regional non-profit company servicing school children in Los Angeles, with 100 FT and 400 PT employees and 34 locations. Current Situation: • Had an ancient network that needed to be replaced immediately. • Needed to connect with employees at remote locations with limited network access. • Had a part-time workforce he needed to support for a the school year. • Costs for new hardware, software and the upgrade project were in the $88,000 range. Case Study: Woodcraft Rangers
  • 25. Solution: • Upgraded his 4 server network to 1 virtualized (4 virtual) server. • Added a small inexpensive NAS to act as a local backup. • Provided remote access to the server so that employees at school sites could immediately upload attendance data so that it could be collated and invoices immediately • Saved him $8,860 on IT costs in year one, with a total savings of $28,643 over 3 years. • Allowed him to add and remove users quickly without having to purchase full-blown software licenses and workstations. • Gave them a built-in disaster recovery plan. Case Study: Woodcraft Rangers
  • 26. His Comments: “I had worked with Denis before at the Red Cross of Ventura County and knew I could trust him. He brought us a solutions that was customized for our needs without having to pay a lot for that customization. As a non-profit the bottom line is everything.” Case Study: Woodcraft Rangers
  • 27. I want to use mobile devices? How? What about the risks? Control?
  • 28. It’s Not All Sunshine And Roses… The Dangers Of Mobile Computing
  • 29. There are a growing number of “ambulance chaser” attorneys going after employers with “non- exempt” hourly wage workers; if the employee is simply checking e- mail after hours, and you don’t compensate them, you are in violation of employment laws. Mobile Computing Dangers On The Rise…
  • 30. Employers are now liable for accidents caused by employees using mobile devices while driving or operating machinery. Mobile Computing Dangers On The Rise…
  • 31. A recent report from McAfee shows an astonishing rise in malware designed to attack mobile devices, from 792 samples in 2011 to 36,699 in 2012, just one year later! Malware: A Rapidly Growing Concern
  • 32. If A Device Is Lost Or Stolen, And The Data Was NOT Encrypted, You May Have Violated A California Data Breach Law • In California, “personal information” is considered a person’s first name or first initial and last name in combination with a driver’s license number, social security number, or any information (including logins and passwords) related to financial records (credit cards, access codes, passwords, etc.). Mobile Computing Dangers On The Rise…
  • 33. A writer once asked a literary agent, “What kind of writing pays the most?” Her answer was simple: “Ransom notes.” That's sort of what's happening in the cybercrime world — sensitive data in the wrong hands is used to extort money. Mobile Computing Dangers On The Rise…
  • 34. Bottom Line: You Need A Mobile Device Policy For Your Business! But What Does That Look Like?
  • 35. A Written Policy:  Who owns the device?  Do you want to allow employees to bring their own devices to work (BYOD)?  What web sites and applications can your employees access on the device? Are they permitted to download games, apps, etc.?  Can employees use the device for personal use? If so, how and when?  If the device is lost or stolen, who pays for the replacement?  What data and information may the employee have on the device?  Can employees legally work after hours?  Strict rules around employees using the device while driving or operating machinery, or after hours.  Strict rules specifying that employees may not “jailbreak” or “root” the device, or update it with 3rd party versions of the operating system.  Strict rules detailing what employees must do if the device is lost, stolen or otherwise compromised (report it immediately!).  What are the penalties for NOT following the policy? One Key Piece Of Your Strategic IT Plan: Your Mobile Device Policy
