       Introduction to Cloud Computing
Cloud Computing What is it? Why now ? What are the benefits? What services are available? How does it work? What should I be aware of ? Frequently asked questions Cloud Solutions Overview - Topsec Demonstration
What is it? “It’s a wireless connection to stored data and information which is very easily retrievable and as a consequence enlightens people like you and I who don’t understand what it means” – Enda Kenny, February 2011 Election campaign trail
What is it? Cloud computing enables customers to access IT services from the cloud with minimal infrastructure, investment or services deployed in-house. Roughly, it describes highly scalable computing resources provided as an external service via the internet on a pay-as-you-go basis Internet
What is it? Economically, the main appeal of cloud computing is that customers only use what they need, and only pay for what they actually use. Resources are available to be accessed from the cloud at any time, and from any location via the internet. Internet
What is it? Parallels to this concept can be drawn with services such as the electricity grid. You pay for what you use and the supplier provides the architecture. Internet
Why now ? The internet is evolving Every PC has fast internet access More & more personal devices have internet access Broadband speed are continuously increasing Web browers are becoming more powerful Security measures have greatly improved.

What Services are available?
Hosted Desktop A hosted desktop looks and behaves exactly like a regular desktop PC. The software and data are hosted in our data centres and streamed securely to wherever you are. You access your hosted desktop securely over an internet connection from an existing PC, laptop, or tablet device.
Hosted e-mail Many SMEs are using unsophisticated email systems Time and money is spend maintaining these outdated systems. Hosted Exchange provides low-cost, user-friendly business-class email without a lengthy set-up
Hosted Servers Replacing the conventional concept of the dedicated server. Look and feel exactly like dedicated servers. You directly control the amount of processing power and space you use.
VOIP A Hosted VOIP (i.e. internet-based) phone system replaces expensive phone systems, installation, handsets, landlines and numbers with a simple, cost-efficient alternative.
Storage All businesses require space on some form of systems to store files/email etc Traditional IT people who spec systems rely on experience to gauge customer storage requirements for both today and the future. However this is a best endeavour. We simply buy exactly what we need to day and add space on the fly as necessary
Online Backup Files are stored twice at different remote locations to ensure that there's always a copy available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week. You don’t have to worry about worry about data backup or disaster recovery, as this is taken care of as part of the service

Editor's Notes

  1. So why now ?. Why has Cloud computing become topical over the past year ?
  2. So is this a new technology ? NOEverybody is familiar with these, but the next generation can deliver these services directly to our business.
  3. SYLCloud Computing can be visualized as a pyramid, consisting of three sections
  4. Cloud Application –A cloud application eliminates the need to install and run the application on the customer's own computer. It removes the burden of software maintenance, ongoing operation and support. An example of this is a line of business application such as Sales Force CRM – delivered through a web browser.Cloud Platform – This is a platform that provides the mechanism that allows us to dynamically provision the systems quickly and efficiently that ultimately runs online applications such as Sales Force.Cloud Infrastructure - . The infrastructure includes servers, networks and other hardware appliances delivered that runs the overall facility
  5. A lot of people may have heard of the three types, so I just want to briefly mention each onePublic cloud describes the conventional meaning of cloud computing: scalable, dynamically provisioned, available over the Internet from an off-site third-party provider, which divides up resources and bills its customers on a ‘utility’ basis. Private Cloud -This type of cloud computing is generally used by large companiesHybrid Cloud - will become the most popular choice for enterprises. For example, a company could choose to use a public cloud service for general computing, but store its business-critical data within its own data centre
  6. Removal/reduction of capital expenditureBusinesses can avoid spending large amounts of capital on purchasing and installing their IT infrastructure or applications. Cloud computing offers a simple operational expense that is easier to budget for month-by-month. Helps smaller businesses competeHistorically, there has been a huge disparity between the IT resources available to small businesses and to larger enterprises. Cloud computing has made it possible for smaller companies to compete on an even playing field with much bigger competitors. ‘Renting’ IT services instead of investing in hardware and software makes them much more affordable, and means that capital can instead be used for other vital projects. Up to 50% Cheaper than Traditional IT.
  7. For example a typical server uses approximately €1000 per annum of electricityCoupled with the standard costs such as mail filtering, Anti-Virus Renewals, Vendor Management etc the costs of a traditional system typically increase over time. In a cloud based solution the costs can be budgeted more accurately and remain more constant over time.
  8. Disaster recovery / backup Recent research has indicated that around 90% of businesses do not have adequate disaster recovery or business continuity plans, leaving them vulnerable to any disruptions that might occurWhen you look at a cloud based system you get all the benefits of an enterprise class system from day one. For example files are stored twice at different remote locations to ensure that there's always a copy available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.Anywhere Access Cloud-based IT services let you access your applications and data securely from any location via an internet connectionQuick and easy implementation Without the need to purchase hardware, software licences or implementation services, a company can get its cloud-computing arrangement off the ground in minutes. Quality of Service Scalability on demand - Scalability and flexibility allows customers to react quickly to changing IT needs, adding or subtracting capacity and users as and when required.
  9. Technical Support:You can expect a much higher level of support from these systems, 24 hours per day 7 days per week.Continually Updated:You benefit from the provider having to do all the system upgrades at source without any costs or unplanned downtime to your business.Low Predictable Cost Per Month:We can for example add users/remove users as necessary on a monthly basis so we are only paying for what you need.Built For High Availability:The facilities that house our systems are specialised, highly secure and built to easily scale on demandNo On-Premise Hassles:Because the core systems no longer reside in-house. All that is potentially stored in-house is the basic PC’s/Laptop etc that we use to connect to the central facility
  10. Before we can explain the services that Cloud computing offers, we first need to look at what IT tools you currently require for your business. These are the day to day IT tools you need to run your business, so you need ......In order to have these tools we need to... Have available Cap Ex to purchase the infrastructure & applicationsAnd also the need to be properly managed & maintained.
  11. In comparison we can now look at how Cloud fulfils these IT tool and requirements, You can achieve these..without Cap Ex, on a pay as you go basis, and as already mentioned with an enterprise class system from day one.So what are these Cloud Services ?
  12. Replacing the conventional concept of the dedicated server.Look and feel exactly like dedicated servers but are part of a powerful cloud computing platform. You directly control the amount of processing power and space you use, meaning you don't have to pay for any hardware you don't need or don’t use.
  13. All businesses require space on some form of systems to store files/email etcTraditional IT people who spec systems for businesses rely on experience to gauge what storage their customer requires to store data for both today and for the foreseeable future. However this is a best endeavour. When we look at cloud storage on the other hand - we simply buy exactly what we need to day and add space on the fly as necessary
  14. As you may know the traditional means of backing up data to tape media is no longer regarded as the best means to do so.
  15. Cloud Computing is available, suitable & appropriate to many industry sectorsDNA IT FinancialMembershipLogistics'RecruitmentResearch & DevelopmentTechnologyTo mention but a few
  16. To tie this together, lets look at a business who need to plan to upgrade their IT systems. So, we are looking at an alternative to the traditional in-house system and that Cap Ex. Spend. In this scenario we are going to move all their information, their email and applications to a cloud based systemThe 1st step is the removal of in-house servers- thus getting away from needing your own internal hardware.
  17. Now that all is required is to connect remotely to this specialised facility. This can be office based PC’s or indeed remote workers
  18. As you can see we can connect virtually any device to the Core Facility /Data Centre.
  19. To explain what a Data Centre is, A Data Centre is a specialized data warehouse facility that stores all our servers, virtual desktops, emails and applications.Data Centres have to adhere to very stringent regulationsSuch as ISO 27001 for physical securityAccess must be restricted and controlled typically with proximity card or biometrics. Encryption for all data which is being sent to and from our network, such as Email, Desktop data and passwords etc
  20. There are a few areas to be aware of and your provider should be able to advise on these. The speed of your broadband connection. While most good systems should not be affected by the overall speed of your broadband its worth noting that you should check the performance before moving to a Cloud package whether this is simply an application delivered through your broadband connection or the entire systems you work on.If reliability is a concern then it’s advisable to have failover internet connections into your business.2. What can slow you down - If using a complete system from the cloud – what we mean by a complete system is if you are using Virtual desktop and storage that replaces a traditional onsite system then there are a few areas to be aware of - Namely anything that is multi media or very graphic intensive. Multimedia can be playing large video files and graphic intensive is something like CAD drawings. These can appear slow at the end user level. The use of standard word processing, email exchange, online applications, printing etc should all work seamlessly. That being said, good providers should be able to explain all this, if you are truly working remotely then you will not be transferring much information at all. You should only be transferring the key strokes from your keyboard.
  21. This slide outlines some of the most common question posed to us by our customers.Just to elaborate on a few key points:Security - This is a regular question that comes up and quite rightly so. When moving to a cloud based system if anything security as a whole should drastically improve. Your information should be stored is highly secure facilities- The people whom manage these facilities have to adhere to the very highest security measuresThey are typically independently assessed on a regular basis both on physical security but also from the Data Protection commissionersIrish or UK providers are governed under EU legislation and are controlled under EU law so data must reside within the EU. A good provider should also be able to offer additional layers of Data Security such as layered Data Encryption.Access – We have covered these already, as we mentioned in terms of access to your information and systems – this should mean anytime/anywhere access.Backup – While covered already this should mean that you information is stored and backed up correctly. Cost – For those not familiar with this, there is no one size fits all. A good provider should sit down and discuss the merits of both types of solutions with you and advise upon the correct fit be that A cloud based system, an on-premise based system or indeed a Hybrid or mix of both.In our experience for small businesses saving in the region of 50% can be achieved over time, while others the margin is not always as drastic it really depends on the solution employed.
