The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is an independent body that has regulated cinema content in the UK for over a hundred years and extended its remit to video and DVD content since 1985. The BBFC classifies films into categories like PG, 12A, 15, and 18 based on content like violence, gore, sexual content, and more. Certain controversial "video nasties" released straight to video in the 1980s faced bans or restrictions until the Video Recordings Act of 1984 gave the BBFC regulatory powers over video content. The 18-rated film The Descent from 2005 contains very graphic and violent scenes of injuries, throat-ripping, and death that contributed to its restricted rating.
