BRITISH BOARD OF
CLASSIFICATION
BBFC
BBFC
 The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) on the first
of January 1913. The film industry decided they would take
charge of the film censorship instead of the government
deciding for them which is why it is a non-governmental
organisation. It is funded by the film industry and
responsible for the age controlling for children and people
watching films. a group we have decided that we would like
to base our film on a 15 as we would like to involve adult
themes and maybe some violence to create a sense of thrill
and horror. We have chosen a 15 instead of an 18 to attract
a wider audience and get more views for it. As this is only
an initial idea we will be giving the official rating once we
have filmed and planned out our film opening.
U- U stands for universal and suitable for all ages beginning at four. Although the ages starts
at a U, some programs are suitable for pre-school years e.g. Teletubbies and Chuggington. U
will not contain any references to sex, drugs, violence, horror, bad language, nudity or
discrimination. Some Us will contain cuddling and kissing but nothing too intimate. This is
also the same for violence ,there may be scenes of danger but not anything too frightening.

PG-This stands for parental guidance which means not all scenes are suitable for young
children. This generally means not upsetting a child around the age of 8, but parental
guidance means the parent or guardian decides what they think is suitable for them. Mild
language will be used e.g. “shit” or “son of a bitch” but not really bad words. Sex references
may also be mild used like innuendo or for comedy. There should also be no detail in the
violence in a PG there could be some blood but not actually to see the injury.
12 and 12A-The difference between these is 12A will be in cinemas only and a 12 will be on
DVDs, gaming, and blu-rays. 12A also allows younger children to go and see the film but only
with an adult accompanying them. In a 12 there will be stronger language for example “fuck”
but it must be infrequent . It also depends how it its used. If it is in a violent context it could
result in it being a 15 but a comedic way will be suitable for a 12. Some horror films can be
passed as a 12 e.g. The Woman in Black which had to cut 6seconds to keep it a 12 to attract a
wider audience. Sex may briefly be shown or suggested and the language can only be
suitable for young teenagers on sex.
    15-Nobody under the years of 15 may watch a 15 film. A 15 is a lot stronger than a 12 as they
could include strong violence, frequent strong language (fuck or occasionally c***) ,
f portrayals of sexual activity, strong verbal references to sex, sexual nudity, brief scenes of
sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence, discriminatory language or behaviour
    and drug taking.
18-Nobody under the age of 18 is able to watch an 18 film. As adult themes are used, some
adults may even find some scenes or parts offensive. 18 rated films are very likely to contain
very strong violence, frequent strong language (e.g. 'fuck and c***’), strong portrayals of
sexual activity, scenes of sexual violence, strong horror, strong blood and gore and bad
    language and behaviour.
