What is literature?
•Literature (from Latin
litters; letter) is the art of
written works. Literally
translated, the word
literature means
"acquaintance with letters"
(as in the "arts and

qualitative
implication, not just a
neutral term for writing in
general. Without this
implication, and without a
belief on the part of the
author that some qualities
of literature are best
