perspective of people who did not agree with the calendar the article may be very
biased. Another reason for the adoption of a new calendar is that the government
did not want religion to determine the lives of the French people. According to
Pierre Joseph, the Jacobins were attempting to rid France of religion and the old
order by replacing it with Deism (Document eight). With the incorporation of
deism into everyday life people could focus more on reason, being less influenced

The two peaces of poetry I have studied by Seamus Heaney include
Follower and The Early Purges.
Heaney s poems both relate back to his younger, adolescent life. In the poem Early
purges , he describes young kittens being drowned on the farm. His maturity is
shown when he says with perception, And now, when shrill pups are prodded to
drown, I just shrug, Bloody pups . But we are shown that he is still careless now,
as well in a casual way by saying I just shrug . He is also unsympathetic, and
justifies his actions like Dan. He is now older, looking back and changed. The
language used by Heaney also expresses the fact that little was thought of these so

But the fear came back . In this particular occasion, the full stop emphasises a space
of time where Dan had no regret of what he had done with no disgust, but suddenly
the opposite is true over a moment in time. A couple of vicious verbs used in this
same stanza, are sickening tug , which shows that Dan was sickened by things that he
had done with his violent actions.
I think that the up until the final two verses, Heaney s outlook is that of a young boy,
who doesn t understand why something so cruel should happen. Heaney then shows
his maturity again by showing his understanding that the kittens, or pests , did
actually have to be removed. In the final stanza, a feeling of regret still takes place
where he is trying to convince himself that he did the right thing and that the kittens
are better off dead than alive.
Overall in this poem, it is made up of 3 simple line stanzas, where the first and third
lines rhyme.
In the poem Follower ,the voice is of the son. He is speaking about his father who
he looks up to and admires. The poem starts with the lines My father worked with a
horse plough, his shoulders globed like a full sail strung . The image given to us
immediately is of a large piece of machinery controlled by a large a powerful man.

Double Standards In Our Justice System The Judicial System has always been
something that interests me, because there are always two sides to a story but you
can only support one side and do your best to make sure it is the one that wins. One
reason why I have always had a passion for the law is because living in Egypt you
get to see how corrupt things can get, and I believe this is part of why I am who I
am today, since experiencing this made me become a very confident person
knowing when and how to stand up for myself and not stop until I achieve what I
have aimed for. That being said, I have always believed that the richer you are the
more lenient the judicial system will be with you, in other words if you come from a
wealthy family your chances of getting sentenced to prison are much slimmer than if
you are from a poor family. I just recently started reading a book called The Rich
Get Richer and The Poor Get Prison which inspired me to persuade you why I
believe that the way we incarcerate people must change; we need to look beyond
the background they come from, and start sentencing people based on their crimes.

resources Earth has to offer. Over the years of trial and error within industry,
innovation, and creation, humanity began to destroy the planet without recognizing

became increasingly aware to the population, as respiratory diseases began to rise in
numbers. Pollution is the product of human industry. Innovators are forced to find

revenue sources including the Disney parks and cruises, Pixar Animation, Disney
Channel, Radio Disney, and many more. Even though it is such a successful
company, there are some things that are not very great about it, one of those being

Colonial America was the era when America was made up of different colonies; in
this case there were thirteen. Colonial America lasted from 1587 to 1770, 183 years
long. As said before, there were thirteen colonies: four New England colonies, four

Hampshire, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts, otherwise known as the

omparing Irony
In both Mark Twain and Jonathan Swift s articles there is an effective use of irony.
Irony in satirical writing is normally used for the speaker to convey the opposite
intended meaning to which they are stating; along with antiphrasis, the use of a word
when the opposite meaning is implied, irony makes a valuable asset to satirical
literature. The sarcastic use of irony was input to both readings to express the writer
s disappointment towards their societies teachings during their era s. The use of
antiphrasis and parody go hand in hand with irony, they allow for a clear comparison
between Mark Twain s Advice to Youth and Jonathan Swifts A Modest Proposal.

critiquing the use and effectiveness of them through parody. A Modest Proposal
captures the attention and the trust of the reader by sounding honest and
intellectual. Swift makes it seem as if he is using an academic analysis, comparing
numbers of poverty, working out mathematical equations to depict what poverty
will increase to, and analyzing that there is no better way to work around it except
for the solution he has come up with. A modest proposal uses irony by expressing
the solution of eating babies as something that must happen. Together the sense of
urgency and the hopeful buildup give the readers the perception of an authentic
actuality towards Swift s provided quick fix to the problem at hand. The irony in
Swift s proposal is only found after realizing what the solution provided was, which
left many of the readers in the late 17th century shocked at the mention of

This study explores the (troubling) empirical evidence bearing on capital asset
pricing theories. General formulas for the coefficient on beta and it standard error
are derived, which show that the outcomes of cross sectional tests have no causal
relation to the pricing models. If a test refutes a model, this could be because the
model is misspecified or because poor proxies for true expected returns and betas
are used. Simulation and calibration results suggest that realized returns are a much
poorer proxy than estimated betas are. The noise in realized returns typically inflates
the estimated standard error, with drastic effects on the statistical power. Inferences
based on ex ante returns are more powerful but suffer from a serious size problem.
