Summary
The story opens on a chilly December morning. An elderly Africanв€’American
woman named Phoenix Jackson is making her way, slowly but surely, through the
woods, tapping an umbrella on the ground in front of her as she walks. Her shoes
are untied. While she taps along, she talks to the animals in the woods, telling
them to keep out of her way. As the path goes up a hill, she complains about how
difficult walking becomes. It becomes evident that she has made this journey
many times before; she is familiar with all the twists and turns in the trail. She
talks aimlessly to herself. Her eyesight is poor, and she catches her skirt in the
thorns on a bush. After walking across a log to traverse a stream, she rests. She
imagines a boy bringing her a slice of cake but opens her eyes to find her hand in
the air, grasping nothing. The terrain becomes more difficult, and at a certain point
she thinks she sees a ghost, but it is only a scarecrow. Blaming the confusion on
her age and the fact that her senses is gone, she moves on. She meets a black dog
with a lolling tongue. She hits the dog lightly with her cane, and the effort knocks
her off balance and she falls into a ditch. The dog s owner, a white hunter, happens
by and helps her out of the ditch. When he hears that she is attempting to make it into
town, he says it is too far and tells her to go home. But Phoenix is determined, and

France during the mid 1900s. Many black intellectuals, including poet LГ©opold
SГ©dar Senghor and writer William Gardner Smith grappled with the war,
colonialism and racism that permeated French culture, whether overtly or subtly.
Despite the similar imagery within their prose, the authors showcase two distinct
points of view. Both authors describe ugly, inhuman visages, but in Senghor s work,
these twisted facesare merely masks, as removable as the humanly constructed horror
of the era, whereas Smith sees the twistedness as fully ingrained in the human

describes the negative impressions and actions taken by France as a mask. Masks
can be removed, much like the uniforms in the first poem, revealing a face
underneath. Additionally, the speaker believes the face underneath to be the real
France. A chance at redemption is proposed by the speaker when the speaker says,
O bless this nation, Lord, who seeks her own face / Under the mask, yet barely
recognizes it / Who seeks You in the cold and the hunger (Senghor 72). The passage
offers hope for redemption because France seeks its own face hidden beneath the
mask. However, unlike Senghor s first poem, the speaker here suggests that the
figure beneath the mask is mutable. France s face has changed while the mask has
been obscuring its view. Despite this difference, the mere fact that France seeks a
god like figure within a frozen wasteland hints at the possibility of redemption for its
misdeeds in Algeria. Redemption in this poem requires more work on the behalf of
the country.
William Gardner Smith, in his novel The Stone Face, continues to employ the use
of faces as a literary device that explores the possibility for redemption. The Stone

Meursault Reflection
Meursault experiences the world as it happens around him, he cares not to look
towards the future nor does he lament the past. Meursault lives in the present,
however, he does not see the present as most do. Instead of having strong emotions
and feelings Meursault looks at the present through cold logic and does not attach
feelings to anything or anyone. Meursault even goes as far as killing someone yet
feeling no remorse for doing so, he views his own arrest and trial as more of an
inconvenience than anything. In the quite loneliness of his cell, Meursault
changed. Instead of not caring about his past or future, instead of not attaching
feelings towards his experiences, Meursault starts to care. In part 1 of the novel
Meursault does not care about look towards the future while also not looking back

infringes on the mother s right to life, because other people do not have a right to

At this time last week, before beginning the graduate program, my understanding
of homeland security was largely informed by the media and popular culture. After
reading the assignments and the lecture this week, I can certainly say that my
initial ideas have been challenged and expanded upon. Right away the most
important idea I learned is that homeland security deals with much more than just
terrorism. Prior to this class I never would have considered something like
Hurricane Harvey an issue of homeland security. My initial views on homeland
security were similar to the Department of Homeland Security s in the early 2000s
as noted by Bullock: Prior to 9/11, the majority of FEMA s efforts and funding
were focused on the mitigation of, preparedness for, response to, and recovery
from natural disasters. Much of this changed with the establishment of DHS.
Many, if not all, of the grant programs established within the new DHS focused on
terrorism. FEMA programs and funding were diverted or reduced to support
terrorism. The all hazards concept was not embraced in the early years of DHS.
(Bullock, 2016, p. 5) In addition to this, I generally associated the idea of homeland
security with threats from terror groups and not other nations. I m not sure what I
would have considered a threat from another nation, such as Russia or North Korea,
but in my mind homeland security dealt with groups like ISIS and the Taliban only.
Essentially, I saw the Department of Homeland Security as dealing with outside
threats from terrorist groups. I had always thought that things natural disasters and
recovery efforts were dealt with by the Department of Health and Human Services
or the Department of the Interior, and that threats from foreign nations would be
dealt with by the State Department or the Department of Defense. In particular, I
didn t fully understand the place of FEMA in the Department of Homeland
