WHAT EFFECTIVE TEACHERS DO IN THE CLASS
It is quite sure that we have been discussing about how to be more effective in the
class for ages. The answers are not clear, though… However it is better to be aware
of the tips we need to keep in mind.
ENERGY, BUT POSITIVE PLEASE!
I have been teaching for 12 years. The one and only solution is energy, but the
positive one. Students can understand your mood very easily.Once I went to class
without any make-up as I had a terrible toothache, they had started asking me what
happened. Do not forget; they care about us. Maybe no make-up does not sound like
a very big detail, but it makes difference on you. Reflecting your positive energy to
the students will make your lesson more lovable. How to make it can be briefly said:
- Sense of humour matters. If you would like to reflect your positive energy to
your students, use your sense of humour. This is a kind of native gift, but try
as much as you can.
- Even if you want to yell, try to make it in a positive way, too! I can guess the
question in your minds “How can I yell in a positive way?” . Here I have an
answer: Use different voice tones, mimics and gestures. Or show your anger
with silence. I had a very unforgettable high school class 9 years ago. I was
really young and they were really not disciplined enough. Nobody was able to
stop talking and they did not even care when I entered the class. I was
greeting some of them and the rest of the class was chatting and doing
something else. I was really annoyed with this situation and I found a way. I
waited for them to greet me,but they did not. I turned to board and started
writing: “ Hello Everyone, This is a kind of warning. Go on and wait for the end!
“ Then a very long silence had happened… They got what I meant! In those
years, I had created such a way like giving a written message and it helped
me a lot.
- Effective teachers are the ones who always show off enthusiasm in the
classroom. Enthusiasm will help your students be interested in class
discussions and classroom activities. Not only being enthusiastic but also
speaking in an expressive way not a monotone style will help you in your
way.Your eye contact will tell everything to your students, too!
CHARM WITH YOUR ACADEMIC EFFICENY
One of the most important skills for an effective teacher to master is how to design and
implement lessons in the classroom. Designing lessons includes how to cater the
necessary curriculum into the real life and the advantage of the students. Furthermore,
an effective teacher should also be able to evaluate whether any student has achieved
to acquire the necessary information. What lesson you are teaching makes no
difference. It is important to reflect the academic efficieny to the students with different
methods and by being aware of learners and learning types you can create a great
harmony in your teaching career. As a foreign language instructor, I try really hard to
be particular about knowing what types of students I am having. While I am designing
a lesson plan, I check whether I have inserted activities for the learners who are visual,
kinesthetic,auditory and verbal.
7/24 READY TO MONITOR
If you really aim to be an effective teacher, you have to establish rapport with your students.
Establishing interpersonal relationships with students is crucial to create a trusting line with
your students. You have to be ready for help outside of class to answer questions and provide
Moreover, showing tolerance to the differences will make you an effective teacher. There can
be differences in the pace of learning and the talents. I have a really nice memory that I can
not forget. I was teaching a third grade class 5 years ago. One of the boys started crying all of
a sudden. When I asked why he was crying, the answer was really upsetting. They were
designing a book cover and some drawings were necessary. He thought he was not good
enough at drawing. He was crying for this! I got the paper in my hands and looked through it
for a while. Then I started to make really encouraging comments on what he had drawn. He
was shocked and started a bit grinning. Then he sat back to his desk and went on drawing. He
was supported and understood by his teacher. I am sure he had courage. Do not forget, if you
are a teacher, you have to be able to have a look from a different point of view. See the things
behind the curtains! Open the closed doors!
HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
Never hesitate or neglect having a positive attitude in your class as you
are the leader and a kind of cheer leader! And always keep in mind that
your attidude will effect your kids’ learning. The way to act is a guide for
your teaching; effective teaching.
