20. 8m platform at Seafield marks sea level 125,000 years ago in last warm period. The pebble beach of that time is capped by the cold stage slope debris (HEAD).
40. Material at Westward Ho! Includes rounded blocks from the Hartland direction and local slate type rocks. All the pebbles at Westward Ho! show percussion scars where rocks have hit them . This is Abrasion and Corrasion.
Average rate of retreat of the Pebble Ridge was 1.5 metres per annum.
40 gabion groynes emplaced along full length of ridge in 1975. Most had disintergrated after 6 or 7 years. Rest isolated on beach face, no longer serving their planned function to prevent long-shore-drift of pebbles. Here seen in 1985 shortly before they were broken open by bull dozers and the pebbles released again.
Replenished material too fine - not enough pebbles too much shingle and sand - result lowering of height of the ridge and making the ridge less permeable and more likely to be overtopped. Scheme abandoned in early 21 C
1962 gap torn in ridge infilled - probably because outgoing tide gouged deep trench in underlying clay. Infilled with dragon’s teeth tank traps. Alternative would be to let nature take its course (eg as at Porlock (34 years later).
