West African medieval culture was characterized by clan-based societies where the good of the group came before individuals. Kinship groups formed the basis of government and decision making. Labor was specialized, with men tending animals and clearing land for farming while women prepared food, cared for children, and worked in fields. Religion was an important part of daily life and centered around animism, though Islam and Christianity were introduced through trade. Trade helped cities grow and kings rose to power by controlling trade networks and playing a religious role in society.
