Here, you should locate recordings or videos of your selected instrument being played alone (by itself) and recordings or videos of it being played together with other instruments or voices.
· A performing artist or music group
· Skim through our textbook and be sure to listen to the music by accessing our World Music Textbook Listening Selections located in the Modules section of our online course in Canvas.
· A performing artist or music group—be careful not to submit only a biography as this is not a research paper, rather you must take a stand on why you believe this musician/group is important. Background: How do we study primates?
Field primatologists face a number of challenges. He or she must locate subjects, habituate them to the
presence of an observer without disrupting their natural behavior, and learn to recognize individual
animals from amongst a group. Only then can the primatologist begin "data collection" -- making behavioral
observations in a systematic way.
There are two problems: 1) you need to maintain objectivity as an
observer and not just watch the most "interesting" animal, and 2) it is impossible to see and record
everything, particularly if many primates are together in a group.
Therefore, all primatologists use
SAMPLING techniques to record their data. There are different types of sampling methods primatologists
employ.
For this assignment, we will use Scan Sampling. Based upon this technique, an animal's observed
behaviors are recorded at pre-selected moments in time (e.g., every 30 seconds). Instantaneous or scan
sampling is best achieved with a sample interval time as short as possible, and with behaviors that are very
easily identified. It is recommended that the observer create a list of possible behaviors, based upon
research, prior to beginning their fieldwork. When the observer is well prepared, this is an excellent
method for collecting a large amount of data on a group of animals.
It is only by collecting data systematically in this way that primatologists can describe and summarize the
complex behaviors of primates. Observation sampling lets primatologists measure natural behavior and
later address interesting comparative questions, such as:
How do primates spend their time? Do activity patterns vary with age or sex?
Are individuals equal in their social group, or is there a social ranking?
Do males and females compete for mates differently?
Do young animals learn anything while they are playing?
Are the young learning from adult males and females?

Week 7 Animal Studies and Castner (1988)
- 1. Twin, Adoption and Animal Studies Using three colours complete the worksheet and link the items together.
- 3. Learning Objectives By the end of this lesson you: • Must be able to describe (AO1) the animal studies. • Must be able to describe (AO1) Castner’s experiment. • Should be able to evaluate (AO2) the use of animals in psychological research. Pg. 10-11
- 4. List as many differences between humans and animals you can think of. Consider behaviours, thought patterns, life styles etc …
- 7. Task Design a set of ethical guidelines for working with animals. What should we consider? Hint, think about: Duration, environment, sp ecies, suffering, extent of experimentation.
- 9. Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act (1986) • Procedures: procedures used during research should not cause pain and discomfort to animals, and they should avoid causing death to any animals where possible. • Choice of Species: animals used for research purposes should be chosen to ensure that the species being studied is likely to suffer as little as possible. • Number of Animals: psychologists must use the smallest number of animals possible in their research so that the effects are kept to a minimum. • Housing and animal care: when using animals, psychologists must be sure to keep them in settings as similar to their natural habitat as possible. If they live in groups, they must be caged in groups. If they normally live in wide, open spaces, they should be caged the same way.
- 11. Human or Animal Participants? • Describe and evaluate (including both practical and ethical strengths and weaknesses) the use of animals in laboratory studies when researching into schizophrenia. Use Castner as an example throughout.
