This presentation was made in my legislative process class regarding the legislation of Proposition 8 in California. The presenter, named Tim, shouted down people wanting to debate his points, called me out in the back of the class as a homophobe, ignorant, white trash, wife beating, intolerant Republican, and proceeded to entail that Abraham Lincoln (who was married with 4 kids), President Buchanan, and JESUS CHRIST were all Homosexuals, all while admitting in a defensive posture that he had been "known to date men" from time to time. Any reasonable debate is out the window with this guy, much like Thomas Jefferson said, "If you argue with a fool, nobody watching will be able to tell the difference." Or maybe he was Gay too, I\'m not too sure. I had to leave the room because I was laughing too hard by the time he started referring to Jesus, the alleged Homosexual Vegetarian that the left LOVES!

Redefining marriage brings about social change. A small part of this change is positive, but it also brings about a lot of negative social outcomes too. This lecture looks at how religions automatically go into decline in countries that redefine marriage. In their place, the state sets about redefining right and wrong based on the changing views of the political class. Since these new definitions are often at odds with what people know to be right or wrong, the only way for the state to keep these new values in place is through fear. Society is left without the timeless principles that are found within most religions - and totalitarianism creeps in.

Separation of church and state has long been viewed as a cornerstone of American democracy. At the same time, the concept has remained highly controversial in the popular culture and law. Much of the debate over the application and meaning of the phrase focuses on its historical antecedents. This article briefly examines the historical origins of the concept and its subsequent evolutions in the nineteenth century.
Religion and Government are certainly very different Things, instituted for different Ends; the design of one being to promote our temporal Happiness; the design of the other to procure the Favour of God, and thereby the Salvation of our Souls. While these are kept distinct and apart, the Peace and welfare of Society is preserved, and the Ends of both are answered. By mixing them together, feuds, animosities and persecutions have been raised, which have deluged the World in Blood, and disgraced human Nature.

John Dickinson, one of the Founding Fathers, wrote the above statement in 1768 on the advent of the American Revolution. As a Pennsylvanian, Dickinson was not criticizing his colony’s religious establishment (there was none); rather he was commenting on one of the rising issues of the day: the proper relationship between religion and government in a society that increasingly identified with the principles of natural rights and rationalism originating in the Enlightenment. The immediate context was a controversy over a proposal to appoint the first American bishop of the Church of England, the presumptive established church for the British American colonies. At the time, religious establishments—that is, government support for “public ministers” and houses of worship through forced taxation or “assessments”—existed in nine of the thirteen colonies, but the Anglican Church was only dominant in four southern colonies. Colonialists living in the remaining colonies—those residing in colonies without establishments as well as those in colonies with “multiple” establishments that favored dissenting sects such as Congregationalists, Presbyterians, and Dutch Reformed—feared that a domestic Anglican bishop would not only increase the power of the Anglican Church at the expense of other Protestant bodies, but also would threaten the civil and religious liberties that the colonialists had grown to expect over 150 years of benign neglect.

The First Amendment reads, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” These are the “democratic freedoms,” the liberties that the founders believed to be so necessary to ensuring a free and unfettered people that they crammed them all into the very first of the amendments. For all that, none of these liberties has escaped controversy, and none has been interpreted by the Supreme Court to be absolute or unlimited.
Why Is Religious Freedom Valuable?
The briefest look around the world tells us what happens when politics and religion are allowed to mix. When it comes to conflicts over religion, over our fundamental beliefs about the world and the way life should be lived, the stakes are enormous. Passions run deep, and compromise is difficult. In the United States, where a majority of people are religious, religious battles tend to take place in the courts, under the guidelines set out by the First Amendment.
Although not all the founders endorsed religious freedom for everyone, some of them, notably Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, cherished the notion of a universal freedom of conscience—the right of all individuals to believe as they pleased. Jefferson wrote that the First Amendment built “a wall of separation between church and State.”14 The founders based their view of religious freedom on two main arguments. First, history has shown, from the Holy Roman Empire to the Church of England, that when church and state are linked, all individual freedoms are in jeopardy. After all, if government is merely the arm of God, what power of government cannot be justified? Furthermore, religion can divide society into the factions that Madison saw as the primary threat to republican government and individual liberty. A second argument for practicing religious freedom is based on the effect that politics can have on religious concerns. Early champions of a separation between politics and religion worried that the spiritual purity and sanctity of religion would be ruined if it was mixed with the worldly realm of politics, with its emphasis on power and influence.15
The Establishment Clause
The beginning of the First Amendment, forbidding Congress to make laws that would establish an official religion, is known as the establishment clause. Americans have fought over the meaning of the establishment clause almost since its inception. Although founders like Jefferson and Madison were clear on their position that church and state should be separate realms, other early Americans were not.

OVERVIEW – A COMPLEX ISSUE
The issue of the proper role of religion in the public schools continues to be the subject of great
controversy. School officials, parents and students -- as well as lawyers and judges -- wrestle with
these questions every day. However, clear standards and guidance are elusive. This handbook will
help provide a roadmap through this terrain.
It is important to bear in mind that this issue is extremely complex. Decision makers must address
many competing demands, invariably looking to balance the constitutional mandates of separation
of church and state and the right to freely exercise religion, as well as freedom of speech. They
must include in their thinking the needs and rights of both the religious and the non-religious.
Furthermore, decision makers must strive towards a vision of a pluralistic America that is open
and welcoming to all groups, including religious minorities.
This subject matter area, while complex, does not have to be divisive. School districts should set
forth clear policies regarding religion in the public schools that satisfy both the letter and the
spirit of the First Amendment. Parents should become involved in the process of discussing these
policies with educators, and approach difficulties with an understanding that mistakes and
misinformation, not malice, underlie a great many of the problems which typically arise in this
area.
Addressing these concerns with civility does not mean that those involved should understate the
importance of these issues, nor should they shy away from insisting that their concerns are heard
and addressed. Rather, all of us should recognize that although we may define it differently, our
common goal is to ensure that the vision of religious liberty upon which this nation was founded is
preserved. Few Americans would disagree that our individual religious freedom is extremely
precious and that no one should be subjected to inappropriate religious coercion.
The Anti-Defamation League has been fighting anti-Semitism, racism and bigotry since 1913. To
that end, we have been fighting for the religious liberty rights of all Americans – whether in the
minority or majority - to practice their religions freely and without government interference. As a
result, we have developed an expertise in this area. We encourage you to reach out to your local

In 2008, Dr. Kritsonis was inducted into the William H. Parker Leadership Academy Hall of Honor, Graduate School, Prairie View A&M University – The Texas A&M University System. He was nominated by doctoral and master’s degree students.
Dr. Kritsonis Lectures at the University of Oxford, Oxford, England
In 2005, Dr. Kritsonis was an Invited Visiting Lecturer at the Oxford Round Table at Oriel College in the University of Oxford, Oxford, England. His lecture was entitled the Ways of Knowing Through the Realms of Meaning.
Dr. Kritsonis Recognized as Distinguished Alumnus
In 2004, Dr. William Allan Kritsonis was recognized as the Central Washington University Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus for the College of Education and Professional Studies. Dr. Kritsonis was nominated by alumni, former students, friends, faculty, and staff. Final selection was made by the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Recipients are CWU graduates of 20 years or more and are recognized for achievement in their professional field and have made a positive contribution to society. For the second consecutive year, U.S. News and World Report placed Central Washington University among the top elite public institutions in the west. CWU was 12th on the list in the 2006 On-Line Education of “America’s Best Colleges.”

Using public funds for private schools has a major impact on the overall aspects of school finance. Although the public, in general, supports its local public schools, forces continue to promote using taxpayer dollars to assist in providing revenues for nonpublic schools. Legislators, private entrepreneurs, and some citizens are questioning the ability of personnel in the public sector to operate the schools efficiently and to offer enough options to meet the needs of students. Privately sponsored schools have been encouraged for those groups and individuals who are willing to support them financially in addition to participating in financing the public school system. However, such groups have become more vocal, stressing that because the states have a responsibility to provide a free education for the school-age population, they should provide for students in both private and public schools. The use of public funds for educating children in private schools was essentially a non-issue for more than a century. The interpretation of the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution as part of the Bill of Rights (1791), as well as established state codes, was that an interrelationship between church and state was prohibited, and that direct government support for private or parochial schools was illegal. In 1875, President Ulysses S. Grant called for a Constitutional Amendment that would prohibit the use of public funds for private “sectarian schools.” Motivated by Grant’s speech, Congressman James G. Blaine proposed the following amendment in the U.S. House of Representatives: No State shall make any law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, and no money raised by taxation in any State for the support of public schools, or derived from any public fund therefore, nor any public lands devoted therein, shall ever by under the control of any religious sect, nor shall any money so raised or lands so devoted be divided between religious sects or denominations.1 Blaine’s proposal passed the House but did not pass by two-thirds vote in the Senate. The proposal had a great impact on states; however, as many as 37 states included laws with similar criteria with some included in state constitutions.2 The State Blaine influence has been felt in several court cases as late as 2015. The first court case that opened a door for those who advocated using public funds for church-related schools was Pierce v. Society of Sisters (268 U.S. 510, 1925). In its ruling, the U.S. Supreme Court stated, “The fundamental theory of liberty under which all governments in this union repose excludes any general power of the State to standardize its children by forcing them to accept instruction from public teachers.”3 From this decision to the present day, many changes have occurred that have had and will have a great effect on financing public schools during the next decade. A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
