SoFerence-2017
Organised by TCS & OLA
“Digital by Default: Make Yourself Future Ready”
 The classic libraries have been serving
using modern technologies
 Libraries are serving their users
through internet on World Wide Web.
 Where the web serves the users as a
library, it is necessary to organize,
classified and manages the web
contents, documents in a proper way
as maintained in a Library.
 The responsibilities of a library could
be better executive by a Library and
Information Science professional.
 An idea of the joint venture has been
creating another platform for the both
and the initiative is a library on the
Web which may be called as an Web-
Library.
The great things about
using a Web-Library is
Information is organized
and evaluated.
The web- library is also
easy to access.
Anytime and anywhere
accessible from
computer/tablet/mobile
etc.
 The term “webrarian” is a noun which
means “A person who is an expert at not
only finding information on the web, but
also at prioritizing, organizing, and
cataloguing that information.”
 Etymology of this word webrarian is web
+ librarian. Hence the meaning of the
word “webrarian” is “Web-Librarian”.
 Its related word is cybrarian which means
Cyber-Librarian.
THE LIBRARY THE WEB
The Differences
Library resources go through a review
process
Most information on the web does not
go through a review process
Library’s information, resources are
free for use
All Information on the web are not free
Resources of library are organized Information on the web is searchable
but not organized
Library resources are kept permanently Most information on the web is not
comprehensive
Library resources come with personal
assistance
Most information on the web is not
permanent
Quality over quantity Information on the web is differenced

THE LIBRARY THE WEB
The Similarities
Library is Centre of Information,
resource of Knowledge and generation
of wisdom.
The Web is a source of information
which generates knowledge and
wisdom.
Library is an access point for the
information users.
The Web is also an access point and it
has an user group
Library establishes to serve the user
communities.
The Web is also open for serve its
users.
Library try to provide user satisfy
services.
The Web wish to satisfy its users.
Library welcomes the information
seekers.
Web is waiting a search by a searcher.
 The 1st Law- “Books are for use”
 The 2nd Law- “Every reader his/her book”
 The 3rd Law- “Every book its reader”
 The 4th t Law- “Save the time of the reader”
 The 5th Law- “The Library is a growing organism”
The five laws of Library Science (1931) were developed by Dr. S. R.
Ranganathan (1892-1972), “the father of Library Science”.
(The 1st Law was emerged later from casual hint of his professor E. B.Ross.)
According to Ranganathan’s own words One is the generalization of the concept
“book” this has been emphasized in recent years in the term “document”, Later,
on his “Documentation and Its Facets” he reformulated the Laws:
“Documents are for use”
“Every user his/her Document”
“Every Document is User”
“Save the time of the User”
“The Library is a growing organism”
A Sixth Law of Library science was posited by James R.Rettig (1992) which is an
extension of Ranganathan's five laws. The 6th Law- "Every reader his freedom".
 “Web resources are for use”
 “Every user his or her web resource”
 “Every web resource its user”
 “Save the time of the user”
 “The Web is a growing organism”
AlirezaNoruzi (2004), recommended to applying Ranganathan’s laws to
the web in his paper on “Application of Raanganathan’s Law to the Web”.
After inspired by the "Five Laws of Library Science" He described and
analyzed “The Five Laws of the Web”. By defining its minimum
requirements, these laws form the foundation for the Web
The 6th Law of James R.Rettig may be applicable to the web as
"Every user his/her Freedom" , but it is applicable only for the
type of service like instruction or provision of information etc.
 A Librarian of a web-library is called as a Webrarian
 While a librarian plays many roles in an organization, it is
difficult to identify a role as primary one as the same changes
from time-to-time depending on the organizational objectives
and requirements.
 Ultimately, Webrarian facilitate the online communications
between the Library and its users.
 Webrarian’s role has been shifted from creating, editing and
deleting content to managing and facilitating the content that
is creating by the others.
 A webrarian can extend the library reach and explore the
library services to different types of users outside the walls of
the library even to them those who need the services but could
not come to the library.
“Where the user could not come to the Library,
the Library should go to the user”
A Webrarian is responsible for
the ongoing design,
development and evaluation of
the web presence of its library.
The Web presence includes
user-facing, intranet systems
and systems provided by
vender/consortium.
This situation works together
with library staff and user
communities to ensure access to
web services and online
resources.
The Webrarian specializes on
web technologies for faculty and
staff and promotes library
website as an instructional tool.
 Intermediary of Search
 Facilitator of Resource
 Web Site Builder or
Publisher
 End-User Trainer/
Educator
 Wisdom Researcher
 Designer of Interface
 Manager of Knowledge
 Provider of Information
Now a days librarians have been more inspired by technological
development and more skilled for become an organizer, indexer,
abstractor, archivers on the to assuming the new roles of a webrarian
as:
The technical components of a
webrarian are to manage the
documents of a web-library and
process them for classification,
codification, indexing & abstracting.
 A webrarian should have sufficient
knowledge of information storage and
recovery system, including document
management systems, electronic
collaboration systems and case
management systems.
His role included with managing
databases, metadata, records, tags etc.
Information collection, organization,
architecture, store and dissemination
are the principle role of a webrarian
 The concept of web-library is very needful to
the library user community.
 It is a big challenge to the modern librarians to
become webrarian to establish and executive
the web-libraries.
 A webrarian extend the Library’s reach and
serves smartly using the smart technologies.
 After the application of the laws of library
science into the web science, it will be a best
opportunity for Librarians to enter the
knowledge world throughout the web and
proof themselves that their life is not limited
within the walls of books only.
