Vienna peer mentoringrefwomen

It brings together views on how cities are changing from a wide range of experts from 12 workshops undertaken over the past 2 years in Beirut, Christchurch, Delhi, Dubai, Guayaquil, Mumbai, Singapore, London, Toronto and Vienna.
Cities are where most of us choose to live, work and interact with others. As a result they are where innovation happens, where most ideas form and from which economic growth largely stems. They are also where significant problems can first emerge and where challenges are magnified.
This report explores some of the common challenges found in urban areas such as managing migration, countering inequality and sustainable scaling; highlights shared ambitions of having healthier, accessible and more intelligent cities; and also details some of the emerging concerns around creating cities that are safe, resilient and open to broader collaboration.
As a compilation of thoughts and ideas from a host of experts we would foremost like to thank all of the many workshop participants for their input. Without your views we would not be able to curate this synthesis. In addition we would also like to thank others who have added in extra content, shared reports and reviewed the core document. We hope that this reflects all your varied perspectives.
Going forward, we also hope that this will be of use to those leading cities, designing new districts, developing policy and exploring opportunities for urban innovation. We know that several cities are already using the insights as stimulus for challenging strategy and stimulating innovation. 3. Preliminary findings show the mentoring model is effective in fostering collaboration between cities and catalyzing policy changes, though resources are limited and preparation time could be expanded.
Vienna peer mentoringrefwomen
The document summarizes a project called "Peer-Mentoring for young mothers and pregnant women" that took place from 2017-2019 in Vienna. The project trained refugee women with health backgrounds to become peer mentors for pregnant refugees and young mothers. As previously shared in PPT format (https://www.slideshare.net/futureagenda2/future-of-cities-2017-summary), this is the detailed synthesis of insights gained from multiple discussions around the world. It brings together views on how cities are changing from a wide range of experts from 12 workshops undertaken over the past 2 years in Beirut, Christchurch, Delhi, Dubai, Guayaquil, Mumbai, Singapore, London, Toronto and Vienna.
Cities are where most of us choose to live, work and interact with others. As a result they are where innovation happens, where most ideas form and from which economic growth largely stems. They are also where significant problems can first emerge and where challenges are magnified.
This report explores some of the common challenges found in urban areas such as managing migration, countering inequality and sustainable scaling; highlights shared ambitions of having healthier, accessible and more intelligent cities; and also details some of the emerging concerns around creating cities that are safe, resilient and open to broader collaboration.
As a compilation of thoughts and ideas from a host of experts we would foremost like to thank all of the many workshop participants for their input. Without your views we would not be able to curate this synthesis. In addition we would also like to thank others who have added in extra content, shared reports and reviewed the core document. We hope that this reflects all your varied perspectives.
Going forward, we also hope that this will be of use to those leading cities, designing new districts, developing policy and exploring opportunities for urban innovation. We know that several cities are already using the insights as stimulus for challenging strategy and stimulating innovation. In addition, linking into to another Growth Agenda driven project looking at the Worlds Most Innovative Cities (https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/innovation-hot-spots-countries-vs-cities-tim-jones), this is also being used as part of events designed to help future leaders identify how and where they can make most impact.

During the Covid19 pandemic, the Canadian federal and Québec governments decided to implement total containment. This decision significantly affected people in situations of vulnerability and poverty, such as isolated seniors, the homeless, young families in precarious situations, people with mental health problems, people with disabilities, visible minorities, and newcomers. First of all, they often lost almost all their sources of income without the compensation provided by the federal government. Besides, the confinement and fear of the virus significantly reduced the density of social support they previously enjoyed. They were often completely disoriented.
Centraide of Greater Montréal, a public foundation omnipresent in the fight against poverty and its effects, together with many community organizations working around various social issues such as food security and housing, and several governmental and non-governmental actors inevitably found themselves amid this great social crisis. How did they manage this? What were the effects on vulnerable people? What will be the strategic implications of this crisis for the future?
This was the purpose of the study that the Chair of Strategy and Society at HEC Montréal undertook, with the collaboration of officials and volunteers from Centraide and the community agencies concerned. This research was funded in a partnership between Mitacs (a national research grant agency), Centraide, and HEC Montréal (the business school affiliated with the University de Montréal).

Social Life of Cities: Social investment & placemaking
This presentation describes Social Life's work with the City of Malmö's Environment Department to develop a new placemaking model that can be funded by social investment. Habitat agenda and global housing challenges
Cities are, and will remain, the centres of global finance, industry and communications, home to a wealth of cultural diversity and political dynamism, immensely productive, creative and innovative. However, they have also become breeding grounds for pollution and congestion. Unsustainable patterns of consumption among dense city populations, concentration of industries, intense economic activities, increased use of motor vehicles and inefficient waste management all suggest that the major environmental problems of the future will be city problems. Poor urban governance and bad policies have further exacerbated environmental degradation and deteriorating living conditions in many cities.
It is apparent that many governments are under−prepared and under−resourced in anticipating, planning and preparing for an urbanizing world. However, 1996 marked a turning point in international efforts to promote socially and environmentally sustainable cities. The Second United Nations Conference on Human Settlements (Habitat II), held in Istanbul, Turkey, in June 1996, recognized that more holistic, inclusive and participatory policies, strategies and actions are required to make the world’s cities and communities safe, healthy and equitable. Habitat II, popularly known as the City Summit, was conceived as a conference of partnerships. It established a historic precedent by including in its deliberations representatives from local authorities, non−governmental organizations, the private sector, academia and other partner groups.

MCIC Annual Report 2020

Elmoustkbal SDGs platform
This document presents a project called "Elmoustkbal SDGs" which aims to raise awareness of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) among citizens, especially young people, in Egypt and other Arab countries. It plans to create an awareness platform through social media, campaigns, and a dedicated website to educate people on how the SDGs can benefit their lives and communities by promoting economic development, jobs, education, health, and addressing issues like poverty and climate change. The project faces challenges like lack of awareness of the SDGs, limited funding, and different perspectives between high and low-income countries, but sees an opportunity to provide independent youth media on this important topic.

The High Level Panel on the Post-2015 Development Agenda today released “A New Global Partnership: Eradicate Poverty and Transform Economies through Sustainable Development,” a report which sets out a universal agenda to eradicate extreme poverty from the face of the earth by 2030, and deliver on the promise of sustainable development. The report calls upon the world to rally around a new Global Partnership that offers hope and a role to every person in the world.
Conference highlights - OECD Civil Society Days 2019
The International Conference on Civil Society Space discussed strategies to defend and expand shrinking civil society space. Civil society faces increasing pressure globally from states and non-state actors. Restrictions undermine development goals. Participants discussed how to promote enabling environments through multi-stakeholder partnerships and inclusive dialogue. Recommendations included strengthening CSO effectiveness, shifting support to the local level, and improving spaces for civil society participation in policymaking.

Despite competition concerns over the increasing dominance of global corporations, many argue that productivity spillovers from multinationals to domestic firms justify pro-FDI policies. For the first time, we use firm-to-firm transaction data in a developed country to examine the impact of forming a new relationship with a multinational, and find a TFP increase of about 8% three or more years after the event. Sales to other buyers, trade and customer quality also increase. However, we also document that starting to supply other “superstar firms” such as those who heavily export or are very large also increases performance by similar amounts, even if the superstar is a non-multinational. Placebos on starting relationships with smaller firms and novel identification strategies relying solely on demand shocks to superstar firms support a causal interpretation. In addition to productivity spillovers, we document the transmission of “relationship capabilities” and “dating agency” effects as the increase in new buyers is particularly strong within the superstar firm’s existing network. These results suggest an important role for raising productivity through the supply chains of superstar firms regardless of their multinational status.

In Canada, there is limited analysis on industry locations at the neighbourhood level; location and co-location of industries have been assessed primarily at the regional scale which results in an information gap for businesses. Recent evidence suggests that businesses do not just choose a city for their location, they choose specific business districts within a metropolitan area. Recent improvements in the geolocation of business microdata allow to address the information gap. This work, undertaken as part of the Business Data Lab and in collaboration with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, is a first attempt to map industry locations at the neighbourhood level in major metropolitan areas of Canada. Using establishment-level microdata from the Business Register, we apply spatial kernel density estimations to identify neighbourhoods with high employment/revenue density for selected industries (2-digit NAICS) and industry clusters (grouping of 6-digits NAICS). The geographic delineation of business districts within metropolitan areas is the first step in understanding the evolution of industry location and co-location over time, and assessing local business dynamics at the neighbourhood level. Ultimately, these business districts can be analyzed in combination with additional data sources (e.g., mobility and road traffic) to derive further economic insights.

Small organizations in Canada struggle with accessing and leveraging data on business conditions and trends. These organizations have expressed difficulty in knowing what is available, accessing it and converting this information into actionable insights. To empower small organizations with more business-related information and insights, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce has built a suite of free tools that merge and visualize traditional statistics with powerful high-frequency data sets (e.g. payments and mobility). This work is enabled by innovate data governance (e.g. a data trust) and a collaborative partnership with Statistics Canada. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce is continuing work with Statistics Canada to release more local business information available through the agency’s Business Register (e.g. the mapping of local business districts), and is exploring how Generative AI can support small organizations’ navigation and understanding of the business information it has curated.

This study investigates the distribution of the European Union's Horizon 2020 funding programme on rural and urban regions between 2014 and 2020 and the resulting urban-rural links. Leveraging the Horizon 2020-database covering the 2014-20 programming period, which encompasses data on approximately 35,000 funded projects involving nearly 180,000 partners, the paper explores the participation of rural firms and organisations in the broader European research framework. By integrating the urban-rural classification of NUTS 3 regions, the research addresses key questions concerning the involvement of rural regions in Horizon 2020 projects, the structural differences in projects with and without rural participation, and the dynamics of urban-rural collaboration in research. The study further aims to identify potential clusters of rural innovation hubs across Europe and assess spatial disparities.
